Live from the Morgan Stanley Japan Summit, our analysts Chiwoong Lee and Sho Nakazawa discuss their outlook for the Japanese economy and stock market in light of the country's evolving trade partnerships with the U.S. and China.Read more insights from Morgan Stanley.----- Transcript -----Lee-san: Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Chiwoong Lee, Principal Global Economist at Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities.Nakazawa-san: And I'm Sho Nakazawa, Japan Equity Strategist at Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities.Lee-san: Today we're coming to you live from the Morgan Stanley Japan Summit in Tokyo. And we'll be sharing our views on Japan in the context of global economic growth. We will also focus on Japan's position vis-à-vis its two largest trading partners, the U.S. and China. It's Tuesday, May 20, at 3pm in Tokyo.Lee-san: Nakazawa-san, you and I both have been talking with a large number of clients here at the summit. Based on your conversations, what issues are most top of mind right now?Nakazawa-san: There are many inquiries about how to position because of the uncertainty of U.S. trade policy and the investment strategy for governance reform. These are both catalysts for Japan. And in Japan, there are multiple governance investment angles, with increasing interest in the removal of parent-child listings, which is when a parent company and a subsidiary company are both listed on an exchange. This reform [would] remove the subsidiaries. So, clients are very focused on who will be the next candidate for the removal of a parent-child listing. And what are you hearing from clients on your side, Lee-san?Lee-san: I would say the most frequent questions we received were regarding the Trump administration's policies, of course. While the reciprocal tariffs have been somewhat relaxed compared to the initial announcements, they still remain very high; and there was a strong focus on their negative impact on the U.S. economy and the global economy, including Japan. Of course, external demand is critical for Japanese economy, but when we pointed out the resilience of domestic demand, many investors seemed to agree with that view.Nakazawa-san: How do investors' views square with your outlook for the global economy over the rest of the year?Lee-san: Well, there was broad consensus that tariffs and policy uncertainty are negatively affecting trade and investment activities across countries. In particular, there is concern about the impact on investment. As Former Fed Chair Ben Bernanke wrote in his papers in [the] 1980s, uncertainty tends to delay investment decisions. However, I got the impression that views varied on just how sensitive investment behavior is to this uncertainty.Nakazawa-san: How significant are U.S. tariffs on global economy including Japan both near-term and longer-term?Lee-san: The negative effects on the global economy through trade and investment are certainly important, but the most critical issue is the impact on the U.S. economy. Tariffs essentially act as a tax burden on U.S. consumers and businesses. For example, in 2018, there was some impact on prices, but the more significant effect was on business production and employment. Now, with even higher tariff rates, the impact on inflation and economic activity is expected to be even greater. Given the inflationary pressures from tariffs, we believe the Fed will find it difficult to cut rates in 2025. On the other hand, once it becomes feasible, likely in 2026, we anticipate the Fed will need to implement substantial rate cuts.Lee-san: So, Nakazawa-san, how has the Japanese stock market reacted to U.S. tariffs?Nakazawa-san: Investors positioning have skewed sharply to domestic-oriented non-manufacturing sectors since the U.S. government's announcement of reciprocal tariffs on April 2nd. Tariff talks with some nations have achieved some progress at this stage, spurring buybacks of export-oriented manufacturer shares. However, the screening by our analysts of the cumulative surplus returns against Japan's TOPIX index for around 500 stocks in their coverage universe, divided into stocks relatively vulnerable to tariff effects and those less impacted, finds a continued poor performance at the former. We believe it is important to enhance the portfolio's robustness by revising sector skews in accordance with any progress in the trade talks and adjusting long/short positioning with the sectors in line with the impact of the tariffs.Lee-san: I see. You recently revised your Topix index target, right. Can you quickly walk us through your call?Nakazawa-san:Yes, of course. We recently revised down our base case TOPIX target for end-2025 from 3,000 to 2,600. This revision was considered by several key factors: So first, our Japan economics team revised down its Japanese nominal growth forecast from 3.7% to 3.3%, reflecting implementation of reciprocal tariffs and lower growth forecasts for the U.S., China, and Europe. Second, our FX team lowered its USD/JPY target from 145 to 135 due to the risk of U.S. hard data taking a marked turn for the worse. The timing aligns with growing uncertainty on the business environment, which may lead firms to manage cash allocation more cautiously. So, this year might be a bit challenging for Japanese equities that I recommend staying defensive positioning with defensive non-manufacturing sectors overall.Nakazawa-san: And given tariff risks, do you see a change in the Bank of Japan's rate path for the rest of the year?Lee-san: Yeah well, external demand is a very important driver of Japanese economy. Even if tariffs on Japan do not rise significantly, auto tariffs, for example, remain in place and cannot be ignored. The earnings deterioration among export-oriented companies, especially in the auto sector, will take time for the Bank of Japan to assess in terms of its impact on winter bonuses and next spring's wage growth. If trade negotiations between the U.S. and countries including Japan make major progress by summer, a rate hike in the fall could be a risk scenario. However, our Japan teams' base case remains that the policy rate will be unchanged through 2026.Lee-san: How is the Japanese yen faring relative to the U.S. dollar, and how does it impact the Japanese stock market, Nakazawa-san?Nakazawa-san:I would say USD/JPY is not only driver for Japanese equities. Of course, USD/JPY still plays a key role in earnings, as our regression model suggests a 1% higher USD/JPY lifting TOPIX 0.5% on average. But this sensitivity has trended down over the past decade. A structural reason is that as value chain building close to final demand locations has lifted overseas production ratios, which implies continuous efforts of Japanese corporate optimizing global supply chain. That said, from sector allocation perspective, sectors showing greater resilience include domestic demand-driven sectors, such as foods, construction & materials, IT & services/others, transportation & logistics, and retails.Nakazawa-san: And finally, the trade relationship between Japan and China is one of the largest trading partnerships in the world. Are U.S. tariffs impacting this partnership in any way?Lee-san: That's a very difficult question, I have to say, but I think there are multiple angles to consider. Geopolitical risk remains to be a key focus, and in terms of the military alliance, Japan-U.S. relationships have been intact. At the same time, Japan faces increased pressure to meet U.S. demands. That said, Japan has been taking steps such as strengthening semiconductor manufacturing and increasing defense spending, so I believe there is a multifaceted evaluation which is necessary.Lee-san: That said, I think it's time to head back to the conference. Nakazawa-san, thanks for taking the time to talk.Nakazawa-san: Great speaking with you, Lee-san.Lee-san: And thanks for listening. Do deep, vulnerable conversations overwhelm you? According to Donna Jackson Nakazawa, sharing your story is essential to healing. This week, I'm joined by the award-winning science journalist and author of The Adverse Childhood Experiences Guided Journal. We sat down to discuss how your childhood shapes your present, why revisiting key moments from your past is imperative to healing, and how writing through it all can leave a lasting impact on your mental and physical health. In this episode, you'll discover: Childhood Trauma Can Lead to Illness Down the Road: Nakazawa cites a study that found women who've experienced three or more adverse childhood experiences were not only 60% more likely to have an autoimmune disease, but to also be hospitalized with one in adulthood. The Power of Writing: 30 years of research support the power writing has on well-being. "Writing is a very powerful way to get old beliefs out of the brain to discharge trauma and to begin to rewire and refire the brain," says Nakazawa. Why Daily Journaling Is the Goal: For a sustainable, safe approach to answering the thought-provoking prompts in Nakazawa's guided journal, the author recommends starting with 20 minutes daily, four days per week. According to a study, doing so "is linked to fewer doctor's visits and greater immune function," she says.  Faster Is Not Always Better: Take baby steps when starting out. Be gentle with yourself as you tap into your most vulnerable self. Our four-person panel explains Japan's economic boom, from growing GDP to corporate sector vibrancy, and which upward trends will sustain.----- Transcript -----Chetan Ahya: Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Chetan Ahya, Morgan Stanley's Chief Asia Economist.Japan is undergoing a once in a generation transformation. A country once associated with its lost decades is now seeing multi-decade highs for nominal GDP growth and equity indices. On this special episode of the podcast, we will discuss why we are so optimistic on Japan's trajectory from here. I'm joined by our Chief Japan Economist Takeshi Yamaguchi, our Chief Asia and EM Strategist Jonathan Garner, and our Japan Equity Strategist Sho Nakazawa. This episode was recorded last Friday, May 31st at 9 am in Hong Kong.Jonathan Garner: And 9 am in Singapore. Takeshi Yamaguchi: And 10 am in Tokyo. Chetan Ahya: Japan's nominal GDP growth reached a 32 year high in 2023. Equity markets have reached multi decade highs, and ROE and productivity growth have been on an improving trend. Corporate sector vibrancy is returning, and animal spirits are reviving. A new, stronger equilibrium is one of robust nominal GDP growth and a sustainable moderate inflation. This new equilibrium of stronger normal GDP growth and low real interest rates will also be supportive of Japan's capex trends. With that backdrop, let me now turn to Yamaguchi san. Yamaguchi-san, what makes us confident that this virtuous cycle of rising wages and prices will continue to play out?Takeshi Yamaguchi: We think Japan's social norm of no price hike, no wage hike is changing, and a good feedback loop between wages and prices is emerging. Workers demand higher wages with higher inflation expectations and the corporate management accept their demand, as they also expect higher inflation. Japan's labor market remains structurally tight and aggregated corporate profits are now at a record high level. In addition to the pass-through from prices to wages, we are beginning to see the pass-through in the other direction from wages to prices, especially in service prices. The average wage hike in these spring wage negotiations was the highest in the last 33 years. So, we expect to see a gradual rise in service inflation going ahead with a rise in wages. Chetan Ahya: Could you elaborate a bit on the details of the capex outlook? Takeshi Yamaguchi: Yes. We expect Japan's private capex to exceed its previous 1991 peak this year. In the previous deflationary period, domestic nominal GDP remained in a flat range, and Japanese firms mainly invested abroad. That said, the trend of Japanese nominal GDP growth has shifted up, which will likely positively affect Japanese firms' decision to increase domestic investment. Also, there are various other factors supporting domestic capex, such as real interest rates remaining low, the weak yen, the government's new industrial policy supporting onshoring and semiconductor investment, and the need for digitalization and labor-saving investment on the back of structural labor shortage driven by demographic shifts.Chetan Ahya: Thank you, Yamaguchi-san. And, you know, I can't let you go without answering this question, which is much of the focus of the markets right now. If yen depreciates to 160 again, how much upside risk to your rate path do you see?Takeshi Yamaguchi: Our FX team expects the yen to gradually appreciate to 146 by the end of 2024, and under the assumption, we expect one hike this year in July and another one in January next year. However, if sustained yen depreciation raises domestic underlying inflation trend, we think the BOJ will respond by raising the policy rate further to 0.75 per cent in 2025.Chetan Ahya: Thank you, Yamaguchi-san. Jonathan, let me come over to you now. You have led the debate on Japan's ROE improvement and have been bullish since 2018. How are we thinking about Japan equities from a broader Asia market allocation perspective now?Jonathan Garner: Back in 2018, we highlighted Japan equities as what we called the most underappreciated turnaround story in global equities. And at the heart of our thesis was the idea that monetary and fiscal policy dials were now set to exit deflation, driving an improved top-down environment for corporations from an asset utilization perspective. It's worth recalling that during the deflation era, Japan listed equities ROE averaged just 4.2 per cent for two decades, by far the lowest in global markets. That's now reached almost 10 per cent, and we're confident that by the end of next year we can be approaching 12 per cent, which would put Japan back in the middle of the pack in global equity markets. And we think further re-rating in line with the improved ROE is likely, over the medium term.Chetan Ahya: And how much upside do we see from here?Jonathan Garner: Well, in terms of the target price that we published in our midyear outlook, that now stands at 3,200 for June 2025 for TOPIX. And the way that we derive that is through an earnings forecast for TOPIX, which is around 5 per cent above current consensus levels. And in addition, a forward PE multiple assumption of 15 times, which is close to where the market is currently trading, and around about a 4 PE point discount to our target multiple for the S&P 500. So that gives us around 16 per cent upside versus current spot levels.Chetan Ahya: Thank you, Jonathan. And you mentioned about corporate governance changes helping Japan equity markets. Sho, let me bring you in here. How will corporate governance changes drive further improvement in Japan's ROE?Sho Nakazawa: I would say corporate governance reform, which is Tokyo Stock Exchange initiative will help fuel OE gains going forward. From the last year below 1x P/B has been a buzz word in the market, growing sense of shame and peer pressure to enhance capital efficiency for the corporate executives. And this is not just a psychological change. If we look at cumulative share buybacks amount, last fiscal year it hit a record high of ¥10 trillion, and we are seeing further record growth into this fiscal year as well.Chetan Ahya: And what are the key alpha generation themes still to pay for within Japan equities space?Sho Nakazawa: In terms of alpha generation, we explored three key themes within the Japanese equity landscape. So one, identifying companies with labor productivity and pricing power that can pay and absorb higher real wages; and two, finding the next cohort of corporate reform beneficiaries. Three, assessing the impact of NISA, Nippon Individual Saving Account, inflows.I think this will drive large cap, high-liquidity value and high dividend stock. Still plenty to play for in Japan.Chetan Ahya: Yamaguchi-san, Jonathan, Nakazawa-san, thank you all for taking the time to talk. And thanks for listening. Rika also provides advice for aspiring women in tech.---------Key Quotes:“It's not just edge in isolation, it's about the ability for you to transmit data and relevant data at the edge and to be able to enable that processing to happen in real time. And, not just from one source, but multiple sources, and to be able to synchronize that.” “We have to think that sustainability fundamentally is about considering the causal links of the butterfly that flaps its swings on one side of the earth, creating a tidal wave on the other side. And, so there's a lot of good intentions that's happening within sustainability in the way that things are gonna be managed. But unless we use edge and collectively create a network of edge intelligence to demonstrate the impact that one action and initiative is gonna have for a group of stakeholders and where that happens downstream or upstream, then we're going to be in a worse place.”“Diversity, equity, inclusion will in some ways take care of itself. If we can help organizations really anchor around culture, I think culture is in a crisis. And, so I think that the way that organizations thrive is through culture and the way that you can align a purpose. Purpose driven business is a big topic as well, and I think that technology can really help us really create that point of light around key areas of purpose, what people want to rally around.”---------Show Timestamps:(04:30) Becoming a woman in tech(09:45) Arriving at NTT(11:45) Connected industry and sustainability(15:00) Overview of NTT(22:45) Important objectives for digital transformation(30:45) Sustainability as a service(45:15) Exciting future technology(55:45) Advice for aspiring women in tech--------Sponsor:Over the Edge is brought to you by Dell Technologies to unlock the potential of your infrastructure with edge solutions. Toki, tell us about the first time you reduced a dislocation? Back in 2000, we were playing an hour away from San Antonio There was no ortho available for the game. Dr. Bud Curtis said, “Toki, you have to do the reduction.” Tell us your AT story 1992 I came to the US from Japan. My father had business in Houston so we decided on Texas and since there were almost no Japanese people in San Antonio I knew I would have to learn English with total emersion. Spent one year at the University of the Incarnate Word learning English Brackenridge High School in 2000 After 14 years I needed a change Stayed home with kids Discuss the origin of your company One night I started dreaming and then began collecting materials. CAATE added 3 major standards including Reduction Techniques I built it for ATs, but I am now getting requests from Emergency Medicine, Wilderness Medicine and a DOD contract. When you were discussing Dr. Approved, tell us more about that. Dr. Curtis was my team doctor and we worked with him through the whole process. We also connected with Dr. Green, a local hand doctor , and had him test it out and give feedback. How can Jay help you today? Jay and I are actually going to be at NATA together sharing a vendor space. If you are no longer in school (an ATEP) how can we get this practice? I am hosting workshops across the country. If you can pay for the travel expenses and the best sandwiches in town, I will be there. What are you using for materials? It started with an old anatomy teacher donating a broken down skeleton and me using orthoplast to replicate the bones and joints. Do you feel guilty searching for new providers? I do not have a problem with switching if the company can do the same thing for cheaper and better. In the life balance you are creating, where is your line? I do not have a lot of expectations of someone giving back. I do a lot of things for others and do not expect anything back. Toki, talk about Shark Tank. I applied and presented to the first round. If I was selected I would fly out to California, but I was not. For me, I am glad I did not give up money and take on a loan.  What is the feedback you are getting? My first workshop was in San Antonio ISD with former colleagues that had never reduced a dislocation before. A lot of clinical programs do not have someone to teach the skills even though they bought the devices. The Standout Experience
Ep 29 Storytelling and Social Capital with Rika Nakazawa

The Standout Experience

Still, on the topic of currency, we are taking a slightly different direction into the world of social capital. What is that, you might ask? Rika Nakazawa is sharing all about it and why it is important to your future. Rika understands how much life is a string of chance coming together to form a glorious story. Born to a German mother and a Japanese father, Rika grew up in the middle of inborn multicultural diversity. After growing up in Japan, Rika moved to the US to become a Princeton Tiger. She has worked for many large international corporations, including Sony and American Express. She is an author, speaker, CEO, and founder of Board Seat Meet Inc. Over the years, just as tech has transitioned from the waterfall methodology to agile, the mindsets of individuals when it comes to their professional future has also evolved. We no longer see work as a linear start to finish culminating in a gold watch at retirement. We now iterate our carriers, learning and growing in short sprints, working to become the best iteration of ourselves. We aren't looking to put a corvette out as our first iteration. We are ok going from skateboard to bike to beater car to high octane efficiency. With this focus on learning and improving, more doors are opening to those in underrepresented groups. No matter the group we belong to, we all have a default station hardwired in us. Our job is to learn what we can uniquely tune into and find others on the same frequency. We discover this by being exposed to others and their experiences. Our ability to sympathize or empathize with someone else has the potential to connect us, both personally and professionally. As we uncover our story and the tribe we are best able to share it with, we find that our arc, our journey, can inspire those around us and pave the way for others. As a leader, you are expanding your connections and your influence, understanding the importance of social capital can help pave the road for your journey and those who will follow after you. The professional relationships that you reinforce socially allow you to grow a network of advocates and those you can advocate for. In the digital age, new avenues for cultivating social capital are springing up. To stand out, you have to know what makes you different and what you have to offer in any setting, personally or professionally. When you have the opportunity to be heard, take it. Self-expression is key. It doesn't have to be perfect – each opportunity is a new chance to iterate and become who you are going to be. If you can take anything away from Rika and apply it immediately, it is this: Practice is important. Think of a person who has been an idol in your life, maybe a leader or an author. Find them on LinkedIn and request to connect. Be specific in why you want to connect and how you are already connected to them. Practice reaching out to stand out. Rise. Shine. Impact. Find your station, find your tribe. A special welcome to those of you listening on OccupyProWrestling.com. If you want to bring our updates to your website...email us: desk@justprowrestlingnews.com. (STINGER: WWE) NXT arrives in its new Tuesday time slot tonight. Expect plenty of fallout from last week's 2-night TakeOver. MSK will defend the NXT Tag Titles for the first time against Drake Maverick & Killian Dane. Also announced late last night - Leon Ruff vs. Isaiah SWERVE Scott. An eight-person mixed tag: Dexter Lumis, Bronson Reed, Shotzi Blackheart & Ember Moon vs. The Way: Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae, Austin Theory & Indi Hartwell. The now-undisputed Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar has issued an open challenge. We're being promised an appearance by the new NXT Women's Champ Raquel Gonzalez...and a look at what happened after TakeOver Night 2 went off the air. Plus, the debut of Franky Monet. It's pretty clear that it's the former Taya Valkyrie. Drew McIntyre will get another shot at WWE Champion Bobby Lashley at WrestleMania Backlash. McIntyre won a 3-Way in last night's main event. Pinning Randy Orton after a Claymore that his just as Orton was covering Braun Strowman after an RKO. After the match, McIntyre was attacked by Mace and T-Bar...as MVP looked on. Some notable returns on the Raw After WrestleMania. Charlotte Flair was back...alluding to the reasons she missed WrestleMania...while not saying it outright. Later, Charlotte took down BOTH the Raw Women's Champ Rhea Ripley and Asuka, ruining their WrestleMania rematch. Ivar returned...and as a result, so did the Viking Raiders. They beat Cedric Alexander and Shelton Benjamin. As for Lashley, he opened the show by mauling Riddle in a non-title match. The Miz got his feet on the ropes to pin Damien Priest and win a handicap match that also included John Morrison. Mandy Rose & Dana Brooke RETREATED from a match against Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler...and were counted out. Bray Wyatt returned to the Firefly Fun House. Alexa Bliss checked in from her swingset backstage and introduced a stuffed doll named Lily. The biggest debut on the Raw After Mania was at the announce desk. Adnan Virk is now on play-by-play...alongside Corey Graves and Byron Saxton. Virk jumped over from ESPN. He replaces Tom Phillips. WWE said Phillips will be the new host of 205 Live, and work on other projects. As for Samoa Joe, WWE said he “remains part of the WWE talent roster.” Last night's Raw was the first at the new home of the ThunderDome at the University Of South Florida's Yuengling Center. (STINGER: Impact) There will be a retirement ceremony for Jazz on Thursday's Impact Wrestling. Jazz lost a Career vs. Title match to Knockouts Champ Deonna Purrazzo on Saturday's Hardcore Justice show. Impact released some comments from Jazz just moments after that match. (Jazz Post Retirement Match) That clip from Impact's social media. Jazz's time in Impact may be winding down, but her career in pro wrestling is NOT over. Monday night, it was announced that Jazz will challenge Trish Adora for the Pan Afrikan World Diaspora Championship at the “Black Girl Magik” show outside New York City coming up in June. (STINGER: AEW) We've got a couple matches announced last night for tonight's AEW Dark: Dark Order's Alex Reynolds vs. Ryan Nemeth... Plus, The Factory's Aaron Solow vs. Fuego Del Sol... DDT Pro's Konosuke Takeshita made his AEW TV debut last night...with a win over Danny Limelight on Dark: Elevation. Mike Sydal rolled up MT Nakazawa for a win. NEXT Monday's Elevation will have Kenny Omega in action, tagging with Takeshita and Nakazawa against Matt & Mike Sydal...and Danny Limelight. Also last night, LEGIT Leyla Hirsch submitted Shanna...and Ethan Page & Scorpio Sky beat Joey Janela & Sonny Kiss. A new match added to Wednesday's Dynamite. Kris Statlander will make her in-ring return from an ACL injury...taking on Amber Nova. (STINGER: ROH) On this past weekend's Ring Of Honor TV...Jay Lethal & Jonathan Gresham beat Bandido & Flamita, who were NOT on the same page toward the end of that match. Also, Rocky Romero beat Delirious in a Pure Rules Match. That's JUST Pro Wrestling News for Tuesday, April 13. Our next update comes your way tomorrow morning, so be sure to subscribe to this feed. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.08.19.258210v1?rss=1 Authors: Yokoyama, H., Kaneko, N., Watanabe, K., Nakazawa, K. Abstract: Brain decoding of motor imagery (MI) is crucial for the control of neuroprosthesis, and it provides insights into the underlying neural mechanisms. Walking consists of stance and swing phases, which are associated with different biomechanical and neural control features. However, previous studies on the decoding of the MI of walking focused on the classification of more simple information (e.g., walk and rest). Here, we investigated the feasibility of electroencephalogram (EEG) decoding of the two gait phases during the MI of walking and whether the combined use of MI and action observation (AO) would improve decoding accuracy. We demonstrated that the stance and swing phases could be decoded from EEGs during AO or MI alone. Additionally, the combined use of MI and AO improved decoding accuracy. The decoding models indicated that the improved decoding accuracy following the combined use of MI and AO was facilitated by the additional information resulting from the concurrent cortical activations by multiple regions associated with MI and AO. This study is the first to show that decoding the stance versus swing phases during MI is feasible. The current findings provide fundamental knowledge for neuroprosthetic design and gait rehabilitation, and they expand our understanding of the neural activity underlying AO, MI, and AO+MI of walking. Previously defined as the housekeeper cells of the brain, microglia have been quietly overlooked since their original discovery in the 1800's. Now, Nakazawa shares how researchers have recently uncovered the cells real work and why they might just be our best ally in the battle against the alarming increase of autoimmune diseases and mental health disorders. In the show, we hear about the cutting edge, non-invasive technology and explore two free integrative lifestyle techniques that aid in microglia support. Body of Wonder is hosted by Dr. Victoria Maizes and Dr. Weil and produced by the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. Sake On Air has taken the show on the road! Well, sort of. The gang isn’t all here, but Justin recently spent a bit of time in the Pacific Northwest and along the way managed to sit down with a few of the individuals helping to shape the future of sake in the region. While in Portland Oregon for the annual Portland Fermentation Festival Justin sat down with sake samurai and vice president of the sake category for Young’s Market Company, Marcus Pakiser, together with SakeOne sales and marketing manager, Midori Nakazawa. Portland is a city gathering the attention of the world for its approach to sustainable development, with it now regularly ranked as one of the best cities to live in the U.S. But what does Portland look like as a “sake city?” Does the local populace’s relatively high level of awareness in relation to food and beverage, as well as preference for “local” as well as “natural” (a word to tackle another day!) give it the potential to develop a unique local sake market that sets it apart from other major cities across North America? Its these topics and more that we delve into in this week’s episode of Sake On Air! A quick caveat about this week’s episode before listening: This was our first-time recording “on the road.” To make a long story short, our recording tools and methods for this (and a couple more upcoming shows that were recorded in the U.S.) were highly makeshift. As a result, the recording quality and volume has suffered a bit, but we hope that you’ll stick with us and that we were able to make up for it with some fun and insightful content. Let us know what you thought of this week’s show (and the show in general) by leaving a review for us on Apple Podcasts or your favorite podcast streaming service. You can follow along with our adventures on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and our  YouTube channel. When people think of Japanese food, they might think of rice or sushi – but Yoko Nakazawa says miso is really at the heart of Japanese cooking.Growing up in Japan, Yoko watched and helped as her father grew vegetables in their garden, and her mother turned these into nourishing dishes for the family to eat, but also found ways to preserve the fresh produce through techniques such as fermenting and pickling. When Yoko moved to Australia, she struggled with the language and culture shift, and as a result, she felt she lost much of her confidence and her sense of identity. Returning to her cooking and fermenting skills helped her find herself again, and gave her something to offer her new community. Now Yoko is carrying on these traditions, and the appreciation for food that tastes good and is good for you, through her business, ‘Cooking with Koji’.It’s named after the koji starter for the Japanese fermentation process that produces foods and seasonings full of gut-enriching edible probiotics and prebiotics – including miso as well as soy sauce, sake, mirin and vinegar.Through her business, Yoko sells the living organic one-year-fermented miso product that she has produced, and also runs cooking and fermentation classes. Her ultimate goal is to set up a foundation to support other women to establish their own businesses and share their skills and cuisines.https://cookingwithkoji.wordpress.com/https://www.instagram.com/cookingwithkoji/https://www.facebook.com/cookingwithkoji/

In this episode, Talking Practice host Grace La interviews Paul Nakazawa, Associate Professor in Practice of Architecture at the Graduate School of Design, whose career as a consultant includes managing several international design practices in the fields of strategy and business development. Having taught practice classes for over twenty years, Nakazawa shares his belief in the importance of fostering personal relationships and a collaborative attitude during the course of a designer’s education, and the necessity of adapting to a changing cultural enterprise as we consider the future of architecture and design. With cities increasingly adapting to parametric operations as the driver of real estate development, Nakazawa discusses the tension between humanism and the algorithm, and what kinds of techniques design practices must employ to survive—and thrive—in today’s changing landscape. Nakazawa reflects on the role of mentorship in architecture and reflects on his own experience mentoring leaders across the design professions, highlighting the value of social capital that lies at the heart of practice. For more information about Nakazawa’s work and teaching, check out his latest course, “Elements of the Urban Stack.”     Paul Nakazawa is Associate Professor in Practice of Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he teaches Frameworks of Practice, the longest running professional practice class at the GSD. He currently serves as a Director and Vice Chairman of MASS Design Group, Boston, and as Chairman of Snøhetta, New York. He has lectured and taught at the Southern California Institute of Architecture, Los Angeles; Architectural Association, London; Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico City; and University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He is a graduate of the University of Chicago (BA, MBA) and Harvard University (MArch). About the Show Developed by Harvard Graduate School of Design, Talking Practice is the first podcast series to feature in-depth interviews with leading designers on the ways in which architects, landscape architects, designers, and planners articulate design imagination through practice. Actual Anarchy Podcast - AnCap Movie Reviews from a Rothbardian Perspective

Based on a suggestion by a listener and to highlight the recent anniversary of the atom bombs being dropped on Japan, we cover Barefoot Gen and also briefly contrast it with Grave of the Fireflies. Demanding unconditional surrender and using the pretense of invasion as political maneuvering while showing the destructive capacity now wielded to brewing adversaries, an entire generation of innocent civilians are murdered in cold blood with the wrong answer to the philosophical trolley problem. The movies both show the horror of war at home that is then amplified at the dawn of the nuclear age. Show notes and more at: http://www.actualanarchy.com/89 Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.com Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking.   Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film. The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film. We publish at least once per week; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics) and have guests. SUBSCRIBE, RATE AND REVIEW ON APPLE PODCASTS (or iTUNES)

Pichón is a pop-up restaurant and a project dedicated to culinary research and experimentation. It is inspired by the chinampas of Mexico City, the culinary traditions of the Mexican countryside, and the gastronomic revolution that has transformed food culture. They believe that the best food is prepared with ingredients grown locally and sustainably, and that food should be a vehicle for strengthening community, from its cultivation to consumption.
