How the Dems became the party of the Professional Managerial Class

By now, you've all already heard the news: After coming in hot with Brat memes and aligning itself with Wall Street and Liz Cheney, the Kamala Harris campaign suffered a historic and existentially unsettling defeat—delivering America straight into the hands of what the Democrats warned us was the worst outcome possible, which was another four years of Donald Trump. Here to help us make sense of it in terms of longer-tail shifts in American class dynamics and political consciousness is Catherine Liu, professor of film and media studies at UC Irvine and author of the book Virtue Hoarders: The Case Against The Professional Managerial Class. The book's polemic against an elite class of contemporary knowledge workers— think: the corporate managers, cable news pundits, political consultants, credentialed experts, and arts and entertainment power players who can't get enough of signaling their own virtue, even as their work often functions to shore up an unequal status quo — goes a long way to explaining how America became so culturally divided. And we also think it's a useful tool for understanding how the election played out — from the Democrats' failure to meaningfully engage with bread-and-butter issues and Gaza, to the party's decision to shift right instead of listening to its own base, to its tone-deaf insistence on joy in the face of widespread economic insecurity and despair. (We should note that we, too, are members of the professional managerial class, as are many of our listeners, which is part of why we feel that talking about this stuff is so important). Catherine joins us to discuss how the PMC became so deeply alienated from the working class, the differences between Trump's brand of right-wing populism and actual economic populism, and where the Democrats, and the Left, go from here. Plus, we touch on what cultural opposition looks like in a world where the Left has so clearly lost the meme war. Curious about how the Professional Managerial Class (PMC) fits into today's leftist strategy debates? Join us as Dutch socialist Foppe De Haan takes us through his personal journey within the Dutch Socialist Party, his discontent with its approach to identity politics, and the transformative influence of Bernie Sanders' campaign. Fapa offers a critical perspective on integrating identity politics into leftist strategies, a topic that is both contentious and crucial in today's political climate. We also delve into the intellectual history and ongoing discussions about the PMC, referencing influential thinkers like Christopher Lash, Adolph Reed, the Ehrenreichs, and others. Critiques of Catherine Lou's "Virtue Hoarders" and explorations of class dynamics through the lens of Eric Olin Wright's distinctions between oppression and domination add depth to our conversation. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking a nuanced understanding of class dynamics and the role of the PMC in contemporary capitalism. Don't miss out on this thought-provoking discussion! Discussion revolves around PMC's intersection with identity politics, its role in the dissolution of the Democrats' working-class base, and its permeation in academia. In this episode, we dive into the Origins of the PMC and the history of the theory surrounding it. This includes the work of Barbara Ehrenreich, James Burnham, Tomas Frank, Catherine Liu, among others I also express some of my criticisms of PMC discourse and the problem of "class identity politics." There are numerous people who have written about the PMC. Adolph Reed, Catherine Liu, David Graeber, and many more. This is: The Perils of Professionalism, published by Screwtape on November 8, 2023 on LessWrong. Professionalism is a useful trait to be able to display, but it isn't an unalloyed good. This essay is attempting to outline why deliberately not signaling professionalism may be useful for you. First, a definition by example for professionalism: Clean button down shirts with solid colour ties, blazers or suit jackets, clean shaven beards, hair tied up in a bun without flyers, beige or gray or at least solid colour cars and desks and walls, even toned voices with just enough of a hint of emotion not to sound at all robotic or unempathetic. It's not the Professional Managerial Class but they (particularly as Patrick McKenzie sometimes describes them) are often its exemplars. I. The word "professional" is defined as a person engaged in a specific activity as one's main paid occupation. It contrasts straightforwardly with "amateur," a person who engages in an activity on an unpaid basis. Notably, "amateur" can also mean someone who is incompetent at a particular activity. As a point of language, we conflate skill and getting paid, and we do this in both directions. If you want to get paid for doing something, you want to learn to do it professionally. Doing something professionally often includes adjacent but not obviously synonymous skills. Some of these are very closely adjacent; I have been a professional software engineer and I have been involved in hiring professional software engineers, and if you don't know how to use source control as a software engineer then you want to learn to use source control. Yes, I know it's not a cool new algorithm. Yes, I know the end user will never see it. Trust me, you're going to use it. Some of the expected skills of a professional are less about the core skill of the job, and more about the frame of the job. "Being on time" and "dressing appropriately" and "conducting yourself properly" are all often given as examples of professional skills which apply in a wide range of fields. Put bluntly, if you're going to interact with a customer especially in a white collar job, it helps to not have facial tattoos and to not swear casually. We seem to have drifted very quickly into something that seemingly has almost no bearing on your ability to do the actual job at hand! Nevertheless, I expect pretty much every career coach in the western world to back me up on the main points here. I first successfully traded money for software when I was around thirteen years old, and while I have gotten better at writing software over the intervening mumble mumble years I have improved even more in my ability to present myself as a Professional Software Engineer. II. Lets talk about my first professional software engineering project. (Here I'm using "professional" to mean "I got paid for it." As you're about to find out, it was unprofessional in almost every other sense of the word.) As best I remember it, the job went something like this. A friend of my mother's heard that I was "good with computers" and asked me if I knew how to build a website. I did as a matter of fact, having recently managed to get my own Apache server running. She said that her organization needed a website where they could announce their events and where people could learn about the organization, and would I be willing to build that for an amount of money that equaled several months' allowance. I said sure, and asked her a bunch of questions about what needed to be on the website. A week later when I unveiled it, she sounded delighted with it, made a handful of corrections to the text, and I showed her how to add new events. This next paragraph describing the website will be pure jargon if you aren't at least a little bit of a web developer. If it doesn't make sense, just skip it and underst...

There are good reasons to hesitate using the term "PMC." There are also a lot of people who need to think more about the designation of this term. The subject-matter is ideology at a level deeper than most people tend to go. The assumptions, habits, and general mode of the PMC are distinguishable from the rest of the working class. The "Professional Managerial Class" is not just a cluster of professionals and managers, but specifically an analysis of the way that class society is reproduced. It is essential for understanding capitalism today, but simultaneously serves as a critique for a lot of purported "alternatives" to capitalism. Socialism, fascism, and New Deal liberalism, are all three different flavors of managerial control correcting for certain contradictions that Marx had thought would destine it to ruin. It is hardly surprising that Marx left the PMC, its existence and role, out of his analysis; he was writing at a time when most of its current roles did not exist or were being carried out by either the capitalists or the workers themselves. But Marxists aren't the only ones who need to take the PMC critique seriously. Liberals and conservatives do as well. Revolutionary or reformist, left or right, insofar as you want to think seriously about what constitutes society, much less positive ways of changing it, PMC critique is something you will need to think through. I am being joined by my friend and colleague Elton L.K. of Working Class Intelligentsia podcast in leading a series of lectures and discussions on the topic of the PMC, its critique and consciousness. This episode was unplanned, but when Barbara Ehrenreich died on September 1, 2022, we felt an urge to honor her memory and the profound influence she has had on the American left, socialism, feminism, and our collective thinking about class struggle. From her work in the women's health movement of the 1960s, to her theorizing (with  ex-husband John Ehrenreich) of the "professional-managerial class" in the 1970s, to her explorations of Reagan-era yuppie pathologies, and her renowned exposé of low-wage work in 2001's Nickel and Dimed, Barbara Ehrenreich has been an essential and nuanced guide to the inner-life of American class conflict in the latter half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. To undertake this journey through an extraordinary body of work, we're joined by two brilliant writers who have both — in their own way — taken up  Ehrenreich's profound ethical and intellectual challenge: Alex Press, staff writer at Jacobin magazine (and KYE's favorite labor journalist); and returning guest Gabe Winant, University of Chicago historian and author of The Next Shift: The Fall of Industry and the Rise of Health Care.As Gabe writes in his stunning obituary last week, "Ehrenreich's specialty was to reveal her readers to themselves by showing them the other. Her humor and projection of personal vulnerability were particularly deft techniques for asking the reader to see their own position, often through identification with Ehrenreich: she invites this, beckoning you to follow her into her subject, and then suddenly wheels around on you—and you are caught out." We hope this episode can manage something of that technique for the listener, that you might find yourself "caught out" too, thinking deeply about where you fit into the story Barbara is telling — and what it might call on you to do, fight for, or think harder about. Enjoy.  Further Reading: Barbara & John Ehrenreich, "The Professional-Managerial Class," Radical America, March 1977. — "The New Left and the Professional Managerial Class," Radical America, May 1977.— "Death of a Yuppie Dream," Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, Feb 2013. Barbara Ehrenreich & Deirdre English, Witches, Midwives, and Nurses: A History of Women Healers, The Feminist Press, 1973.Barbara Ehrenreich, Fear of Falling: The Inner Life of the Middle Class, Pantheon, 1989. Barbara Ehrenreich, Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America, Metropolitan, 2001. Barbara Ehrenreich, "Preface to Klaus Theweleit's Male Fantasies Volume 1: Women, Floods, Bodies, History," U of Minnesota Press, 1987. Gabriel Winant, "On Barbara Ehrenreich," n+1, Sept 9, 2022. — "Professional-Managerial Chasm," n+1, Oct 10, 2019. — "The Right Kind of Worker," Know Your Enemy, May 2022. Alex Press, "On the Origins of the Professional-Managerial Class: An Interview with Barbara Ehrenreich." Special guest host Matt Binder is joined by cultural theorist Catherine Liu to discuss her recent book, “Virtue Hoarders: The Case against the Professional Managerial Class.” First, Matt walks through updates on Libs of Tik Tok's first official ban (from Meta of all places), chicken wing prices reaching a four-year low, and Mike Pence's response to being asked about testifying for the January 6th committee. Then, Catherine Liu joins as she gets right into helping define what the Professional Managerial Class (PMC) is, their role in executing the bosses' orders and managing our social institutions, and how they came to take the mantle of liberal vanguardists, dominating the ideology of the democratic party over their blue-collar counterparts. Next, they parse through the PMC's relationship to, and bolstering of the systems of capitalism, taking the benefits of much more social mobility than the working class and a feeling of superiority to physical laborers for their endorsement of capitalism and its modes of rationality, exploring its development starting at the end of the ‘60s and progressing through the neoliberal era as PMCs moved into suburbs and left the industrial world behind, with public discourse shifting to cultural critiques and allowing them to rest on their laurels above the dirty blue-collar world. Liu and Binder also tackle the growing split between generations of PMC, with the full financialization of college crippling incoming laborers with debt before they can even enter the workforce while the illusion of college-educated superiority remains necessary for the PMC's obsession with status, before wrapping up by walking through the growing striations of the professional classes, the difference between general white-collar workers and professional managers, and whether the PMC can trust socialism's version of a rising tide lifting all boats. And in the Fun Half: Matt Binder is joined by Brandon Sutton as they watch Fox News' highlight package of John Fetterman's best smackdowns on Dr. Oz, as well as Oz's attempt to cover his ass on Newsmax. Matt Gaetz gets hit with the “is a literal pedophile sex trafficker” attack ads, Bill from the Chicago suburbs talks Ukraine and behind-the-scenes negotiations, and Ren from the deep state talks about Trump violating Q's clearance. They also tackle Chaiya Raichik's stochastic terrorism inciting countless death threats against Boston Children's Hospital and Missouri's GOP Senate Majority Leader announcing their focus on the “Trans Issue” (no relation to the Jewish Question, of course), plus, your calls and IMs!

In Episode 66 we discuss how a relatively small class of professionals, who do not own the means of production, side with those who do and work against social change to elevate workers' conditions. The Professional Managerial Class as a “middle layer” has tokenized self-optimization and hustle mentality and created a system of supposed moral superiority which works in favor of conserving their position of relative wealth and power. Spoiler alert: If you're reading this, you're probably part of the “PMC” ;)The episode in a nutshell: Mary-Jane ponders the come-back of the term “class”, Catherine depicts PMC rhetoric as a secular way to moralize class difference and Human realizes how the tokenization of good deeds (virtue signaling) can hinder actual progress.Shownotes:Catherine Liu, Virtue Hoarders: The Case Against the Professional Managerial Class, Book (Erscheint auf Deutsch im Januar 2023)Catherine Liu, American Idyll: academic Antielitism as Cultural Critique, BuchSigfried Kracauer, Die Angestellten, Book C. Traditionally within Marxist thought, there are two major classes, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat, or workers and capitalists. Within these two classes, however, there are many strata — and in this episode we take a deep dive into one particular stratum. The professional managerial class, or the PMC, is comprised of highly educated, often centrist or liberal leaning individuals who tend to uphold the systems and institutions of capitalist society while at the same time viewing itself as the virtuous vanguard of progress. And although this class falls within the working class, its allegiances and sympathies lie with capitalists. And indeed, in most ways, it does benefit from capitalism. To discuss the professional managerial class and its position within capitalism further, we've brought on someone who's written an entire book about it. Catherine Liu is a professor of Film & Media Studies at UC Irvine and author of Virtue Hoarders: The Case Against the Professional Managerial Class. In this conversation we discuss who the PMC is comprised of, how this class emerged, and why it poses a unique threat to socialist and communist aspirations. This group of decision-makers and opinion-shapers, which includes the media, is often referred to in leftist circles as the professional managerial class. Catherine Liu, professor of film and media studies at the University of California, Irvine, has recently published a fierce and funny polemic on the PMC, titled Virtue Hoarders: The Case against the Professional Managerial Class. All the way back in 1977 John and Barbara Ehrenreich coined the term “the professional-managerial class” to refer to “salaried mental workers who do not own the means of production and whose major function in the social division of labour may be described broadly as the reproduction of capitalist culture and capitalist class relations.” The term reemerged in the 2010s with renewed vigour as a useful way of denoting a class of technocratic liberals who occupy an increasingly dominant role in culture and politics, indulging in performative social justice posturing with one hand while resolutely defending the status quo with the other. On this episode, the crew discuss the latest intervention into this particular discourse, Catherine Liu's 2021 book Virtue Hoarders: The Case Against the Professional-Managerial Class. In an attempt to locate the PMC in Ireland, we dive deep into the perverse habits and proclivities of this group of people, skewer their tendency to scold and moralise, and debate whether or not we should even think of them as a separate class at all. From the series ‘The elite: old and new', theme of the boi charity's event The Academy, held online in November 2021. The term ‘professional managerial class' was coined in 1977. Thinkers on both left and right have drawn attention to the rise (and rise) of a seemingly new group in society who neither labour in traditional occupations nor own significant amounts of capital. This group of salaried professionals – in the civil service, education, management, public relations, public health etc. – not only increasingly manage the key institutions of society. They are also said to exert a social and ideological influence, promoting ‘progressive' campaigns around gender, sexual, racial, and other identity causes. But who are this group? Can it really be said to be a ‘class', and how do they differ from more familiar elites? Catherine Liu is the author of Virtue Hoarders: The Case Against the Professional Managerial Class. We get into the: dynamics of noir, the pseudo superiority and inchoate narcissism of neoliberalism, social dominance, corporate embodiment, the monetization of victimhood, our collective need for catharsis and the Met Gala. Professional Managerial Class (PMC) elite workers labor in a world of performative identity and virtue signaling, publicizing an ability to do ordinary things in fundamentally superior ways. Author Catherine Liu shows how the PMC stands in the way of social justice and economic redistribution by promoting meritocracy, philanthropy, and other self-serving operations to abet an individualist path to a better world. Virtue Hoarders is an unapologetically polemical call to reject making a virtue out of taste and consumption habits. "Virtue Hoarders amplifies a discussion that still needs to be had."—Spiked "Virtue Hoarders: The Case Against the Professional Managerial Class, argues that the professional-managerial class-working class alliance was doomed from the start for the simple reason that the two classes' interests are fundamentally opposed. "—The Washington Examiner Catherine Liu is professor of film and media studies at the University of California, Irvine. She is also the author of The American Idyll: Academic Anti-Elitism as Cultural Critique was published by the University of Iowa Press in 2011.   Perhaps no term has caught the imagination of political circles on both the right and the left as the term “Professional Managerial Class” (PMC). The term was first coined by John and Barbara Ehrenreich to describe a caste of middle-class professional elites who increasingly controlled production through their specialist training and educational credentials. While the work of the Ehrenreich's was certainly significant, their hypothesis was not an entirely new one. In the 1940s, the Trotskyist-turn-conservative James Burnham penned the “Managerial Revolution” which hypothesized that society was increasingly falling under the domination of a managerial elite with specialist knowledge.   In recent times, especially in the aftermath of the 2008 economic crisis and the 2020 COVID pandemic, such analysis and criticism has gain popularity on both the right and left. However, how useful is the term PMC? Are the PMC a coherent social class? And in what ways does the convergence of discourse between both right and left on the “PMC thesis” obfuscate more than it elucidates?   About Ben Burgis: Ben Burgis is a philosophy professor and the author of Give Them An Argument: Logic for the Left. @moltopopulare joins co-hosts Natalie Smith, Will Beaman & Maxximilian Seijo to problematize unquestioned leftist critiques of the “Professional Managerial Class,” or “PMC,” past and present. As exemplified by a recent episode of The Dig podcast, leftists frequently invoke the epithet “PMC”--as well as its cousin, “ultra leftist,” or simply “ultra”--in order to shore up class solidarity against capitalist cooptation and ward off allegedly unfeasible political aims. Yet in reality, the Superstructure gang argues, the left PMC trope conceals deeply zero-sum and exclusionary logics that undercut universal emancipation and caretaking. Often stemming from a place of self-loathing or a desire for self-exculpation, such logics not only police leftist discourse according to a univocal workerist ethos, but also violently divide supposedly legitimate from illegitimate horizons of contestation in a manner that reduces universalism to exceptionalism. Tracing the PMC figure’s theoretical and historical roots, the episode culminates with a sustained reading from Karl Marx’s controversial essay, “On the Jewish Question.” Link to our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/MoLsuperstructureMusic: “Yum” from “This Would Be Funny If It Were Happening To Anyone But Me” EP by flirting.http://flirtingfullstop.bandcamp.comTwitter: @actualflirting

Dr. Paul talks with Dr. Catherine Liu, professor of Film and Media Studies at the University of California Irvine and socialist cultural critic, about her recent book, Virtue Hoarders: The Case Against the Professional Managerial Class—commonly referred to as the “PMC.” Drawing from the book, Catherine reveals how the PMC—from academics to social workers—have become the educated elite of modern capitalist society. Though the class presents itself as being a defender of human rights, Catherine contends how this is largely illusory and obscures both their self-serving interests, including the consolidation of power and wealth, as well their rejection of the poor and working class. Finally, speaking to socialism's potential to challenge this, the episode invites us to ask: how can popular struggle be achieved to create a more fair and just society, where all—and not only select classes like the PMC—can live materially comfortable and dignified lives?
