The Polar Bear has gone extinct in Queens as career New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso has joined the Baltimore Orioles. A fan favorite for seven seasons—during which he set the franchise home run record, captured the single-season rookie home run record, and won multiple Home Run Derby titles—Alonso will be wearing orange and black next season. On this episode of Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman talk about the surprising five-year, $155 million contract the Birds gave Alonso and why it's awesome to see a superstar join a team like the Orioles instead of the usual suspects signing big free agents. They then try to figure out what the Mets do next after losing yet another fan favorite, and how the move is leaving former players flabbergasted.Later, Jake and Jordan discuss Robert Suarez joining the Atlanta Braves and why we shouldn't be sleeping on them next season, as well as a few other smaller free-agent deals that have gone down post–Winter Meetings. In this special "Days of Roar" bonus episode, Evan Petzold welcomes USA TODAY Sports MLB columnist and insider Bob Nightengale to recap MLB's Winter Meetings in Orlando. Evan and Bob discuss the biggest storyline of the 2025-26 offseason: Will the Detroit Tigers trade Tarik Skubal, and if not, where will the back-to-back American League Cy Young winner sign after the 2026 season — with 10 years, $450 million as the expectation? Do the Tigers have a chance to sign Alex Bregman if his market collapses again, or is he destined to return to the Boston Red Sox, even on another short-term contract? At the Winter Meetings, Kyle Schwarber signed with the Philadelphia Phillies, Edwin Díaz signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Pete Alonso signed with the Baltimore Orioles. What happens to free-agent position players such as Kyle Tucker, Cody Bellinger, Bo Bichette, and what about free-agent pitchers like Framber Valdez, Tatsuya Imai and Ranger Suarez? For more on the Tigers, Evan and Bob discuss the chances of the Tigers winning the AL Central in 2026 — and what moves the Tigers need to have a chance to win the World Series. Huge news out of Camden Yards, as the Orioles have signed 31 year old first baseman Pete Alonso to a 5 year, $155 million dollar contract! After years of talk from this front office about opening up David Rubenstein's checkbook to spend money on the free agent market (and intervening swings and misses on big targets), the O's have finally landed their white whale (or, polar bear) in the longtime Mets masher. How did all of this finally come together for an organization that had become synonymous with disappointment in free agency? How does Alonso project to fit into this young clubhouse, and their aspirations to return to the top of the AL East? What does the future hold for current players that a move like this no doubt affects? The guys get into all of that, and plenty more on tonight's show. You read that right: the Baltimore Orioles opened up their wallet for once. We come back from our stints on IR to watch the hot stove, put a bow on the Shepherd football season, check in on the NBA season, and catch up on the NFL (mostly complaining about the Ravens).
The New York Mets just watched their core get blown up in 24 hours. Edwin Díaz walks to the Los Angeles Dodgers on a three-year, $69 million deal, and now reports say Pete Alonso is heading to the Baltimore Orioles for five years and $155 million. On this episode of Locked Up Sports, Bob breaks down how we got here: why the Mets couldn't (or wouldn't) keep their All-Star closer and their all-time home run leader, what the Brandon Nimmo–for–Marcus Semien trade really says about David Stearns' vision, and how all of this fits next to Juan Soto's record-shattering 15-year, $765 million contract. We'll hit the fan revolt, the front office spin, and then flip it forward: if you actually wanted to improve on last year's 83–79 season, is this really the way to do it? Or is there a path where losing Alonso and Díaz is step one of a bigger plan?
It's not our money and it made the baseball team better so there will be no complaining about Mike Elias taking the money of David Rubenstein and Michael Arougheti and investing in a legitimate attempt to win. The Winter Meetings are in sunny Orlando this year, and absolutely NOTHING is chill for the Baltimore Orioles. Orioles are throwing nine figures at the top bat on the market, they've confirmed meetings with the next best bat, and trade rumors abound every time you're ready for bed. It's an exciting time to be an O's fan, albeit a draining one. BlueSky Twitter YouTube Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. BT and Sal react to the seismic breaking news that Pete Alonso has officially left the New York Mets, signing a five-year, $155 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles. Hof's fiery reaction sums up the fan base's outrage, calling the decision by President of Baseball Operations David Stearns "inexcusable." The hosts debate whether this move is a necessary "ripping of the band-aid" for a flawed team or a colossal mistake, especially after the recent departure of Edwin Diaz and the trade of Brandon Nimmo. Tierney points to Stearns's focus on defense and high-OBP players like Marcus Semien as the new direction, arguing the Mets can be a better team even with fewer home runs. The key question now becomes: Did Alonso's anger over his treatment by the organization lead him to leave without giving the Mets a final chance to match the offer?
BT and Sal start by debating the concept of "glacial speed" in the slow MLB offseason, using the Titanic iceberg as a nautical analogy. The conversation is then abruptly overtaken by BREAKING NEWS: Pete Alonso has left the Mets for the Baltimore Orioles on a 5-year, $155 million deal. The hosts react to the seismic shift, with a fiery Hof calling Mets GM David Stearns a "moron" for letting the market setter walk. Sal respects the Mets' decision to draw a line in the sand, arguing the team can be better without Pete's specific production. The hosts then transition to their plans for attending Alex Rodriguez's holiday party, debating cocktail attire (corduroy suit vs. turtleneck) and how much actual face time they'll get with the Yankees legend. The segment concludes with a deep dive into A-Rod's complicated relationship with the Yankees and whether he deserves to be in Monument Park.
BT & Sal unleash on the abysmal state of the New York baseball offseason, which is set on fire by BREAKING NEWS: Pete Alonso signs a 5-year, $155M deal with the Baltimore Orioles! Sal defends David Stearns' conviction on player valuation, arguing the "unsuccessful core" needed a "wrecking ball," while a furious Hof calls the GM a "moron" for letting the face of the franchise walk. The hosts question whether the Mets fanbase can "trust the process" after losing both Alonso and Edwin Diaz. The conversation pivots to the Yankees' inaction, where Sal pitches Nico Hoerner as the perfect, contact-hitting Gold Glove infielder to cure their strikeout woes. They also break down the massive hurdles—ownership approval and a huge extension—stalling the blockbuster Tarik Skubal to Dodgers trade. Finally, the hosts dive into the dark side, tallying all of Tony Soprano's personal kills, then shift to lighter fare, debating cocktail attire for Alex Rodriguez's holiday party and whether the former Yankee deserves a spot in Monument Park.

Ed, Rob, and Jeremy took some time from Wednesday's BBMS to talk with Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun. The O's are in the thick of the Winter Meetings this year, with reports saying they are among the most aggressive teams when it comes to acquiring players. Will they be successful in landing one of the big names still out there?
Ed, Rob, and Jeremy took some time from Wednesday's BBMS to discuss what they've seen, and heard, about the O's at Winter Meetings thus far. By all accounts, Baltimore is one of the most aggressive teams in baseball when it comes acquiring players. As a fan, are you encouraged by the team pushing to acquire a player that can change the team's future?
Ed, Rob, and Jeremy took some time from Wednesday's BBMS to share their thoughts on the Orioles' reported offer to Kyle Schwarber, an offer that actually matched the deal he received from the Phillies. Are you surprised the O's were willing to spend the money on a big name free agent?
What does the addition of Pete Alonso mean for Ryan Mountcastle and Coby Mayo? Rich Dubroff joined Vinny & Haynie to discuss where the O's will go from here after finally landing a big free agent.
Ed, Rob, and Jeremy took some time from Tuesday's BBMS to check-in with MASN's Roch Kubatko, who is currently down in Orlando at MLB's Winter Meetings. Rumor is the O's are going to be active in the free agent and trade market over the next week. What kind of moves could we see go down? Roch shares his thoughts!
Ed, Rob, and Jeremy took some time from Tuesday's BBMS to share their thoughts on the reported meeting between the Orioles and free agent slugger Pete Alonso, maybe the best power hitter left on the market. What do you feel the odds are of a deal going down with Alonso? How much do you feel he's worth?
(LISTEN FOR HIS REVERSION STORY NEAR THE END!) He played nine seasons in Major League Baseball, playing for eight teams and being a part of three teams that reached the World Series. He also played in the league in Japan that is the highest level of baseball there. He is a member of eight Halls of Fame and was a manager in the MLB Draft League. After serving as hitting coach and manager for a team in the Philadelphia Phillies system, he went on to become the Pittsburgh Pirates hitting coordinator and then their hitting coach and later became the hitting coach for the Chicago White Sox and after that the minor league hitting coordinator for the Baltimore Orioles. The Winter Meetings are underway in Orlando, and the Detroit Tigers arrive with several storylines to follow. On "Days of Roar," Evan Petzold and Chris Brown discuss the signing of right-hander Drew Anderson to a one-year contract. He will show up to spring training as a starter, but will he ultimately become a reliever? We break down what to watch with the Tigers at the Winter Meetings, including big updates on Alex Bregman's free agency and Tarik Skubal's trade situation. Other topics about the Tigers include the pursuit of another starter for the rotation and the remaining high-leverage relievers to upgrade the bullpen. Boston Red Sox radio voice Will Flemming joins the show to discuss Bregman's market, his impact in Boston's clubhouse in 2025 and whether a reunion with the Red Sox is the most likely outcome. He also endorses an all-in Skubal trade for the Red Sox, even though Skubal is set to become a free agent after the 2026 season. To wrap up, Evan and Chris provide — and break down — mock trades for Skubal with the Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees.
