As mother of two children with Tourette's syndrome and with a background in medicine and education, Mandy Barnett realised that this was something that she had a unique perspective on. When Covid hit in March 2020, her daughter had to shield and Mandy became aware of a huge spike of cases of Tourette's syndrome being reported in the press. Writing a practical guide, Mandy's aim was to provide help to parents of children with Tourette's syndrome in a post-pandemic world and to educate people that it's not all about swearing.   KEY TAKEAWAY “It can be a positive part of who you are. A lot of Touretters are now saying actually, it's up to the rest of the world to adapt to us. Not the other way around. We bring amazing qualities of creativity and ability and it's time for people to recognise that side of it and not just assume that we are in some way diminished.” BOOK RECOMMENDATION* It's Not All ABout Swearing by Mandy M Barnett - https://amzn.to/3NL2RIW   ABOUT MANDY BARNETT Dr Mandy M Barnett is a psychology graduate, clinical educator and consultant physician, who worked for over 30 years in the NHS, and as an Associate Clinical Professor at Warwick Medical School (WMS). "I don't know if someone like that ever retires, you never stop being a musician." At age 95, Sammy Nestico started writing music for what would become his last project, the album Every Star Above featuring Mandy Barnett. Sammy Nestico wrote for musicians like Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rich, Bing Crosby, Michael Buble, and of course, the legendary Count Basie orchestra. Mandy Barnett says "He just exuded warmth, which you could hear in his arrangements. You could tell what kind of person he was by the music he wrote." Mandy is a legend of her own as well. Though her career up to this point mainly focused on the country and bluegrass music she grew up hearing in East Tennessee, she's never forgottenthe big band music her grandmother used to play. When presented with an opportunity to record music from the Billie Holiday album Lady in Satin, Mandy leapt at the chance, saying it's one of her favorite records. The combination of talent from Sammy Nestico, Mandy Barnett, and the 60-piece orchestra behind her is simply stunning. Listen to the full episode to hear more from Mandy about what it was like working with Sammy Nestico, the recording process, and how she went from country to the Great American Songbook.

Known as a respected “songwriter’s songwriter,” Jim Lauderdale is a versatile and highly prolific artist who is equally comfortable writing country, bluegrass, soul, or pop. His 1991 debut, Planet of Love, was packed with original songs that went on to be covered by George Strait, The Dixie Chicks, Gary Allan, Lucinda Williams, Mandy Barnett, and others. Since then, Lauderdale has recorded nearly thirty albums, including the Grammy winning releases Lost in the Lonesome Pines and The Bluegrass Diaries. Patty Loveless has recorded five of his songs, including the Top 10 single “Halfway Down” and her hit duet with George Jones, “You Don’t Seem to Miss Me.” Likewise, George Strait has covered well over a dozen Jim Lauderdale compositions, including the Top 5 hits “We Really Shouldn’t Be Doing This,” “What Do You Say to That,” and “I Gotta Get to You.” Others who have recorded Jim’s songs include Elvis Costello, Dave Edmunds, Tracy Nelson, Shelby Lynne, Vince Gill, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Blake Shelton, Gary Allan, Lee Ann Womack, and Solomon Burke. In addition to his Grammy wins, Jim took home both the Song of the Year and Artist of the Year honors at the 2002 Americana Music Association Awards. In 2015 he was honored by the National Music Council – alongside Kris Kristofferson and Charley Pride – for his “long-term contribution to America’s musical culture and heritage.”

Mandy Barnett established herself as a world class musical talent at a very young age. She really opened a lot of eyes and ears in town when she auditioned for a show about Patsy Cline in the early 1990's. She beat out over 450 people in Nashville, plus many others auditioning in other cities across America to play the part of Patsy Cline in the newly renovated Ryman Auditorium. That show was so successful, she's reprising that role.
