Real STUFF digs into the transformation of masculinity with one of the leaders of the movement, Tom Harkin, founder of Tomorrow Man. The mutual respect between Hunter and Tom allows a cut-to-the-chase deep dive into the journey to manhood in all its beauty, bravery and bullshit. Tom's experience holding space for vulnerability in men, whether they be elite athletes or high-performance executives, sees him go deep with self-reflection about his own relationship with his dad, and the father he wants to be for his kids. It doesn't get more real than this. In this episode, get real insights on STUFF like this: “The funny thing about walls is somebody built them..” “She fucking terrified me. Every part of me felt unworthy. But I knew in my gut… this is my future wife.” “It's so brutal for parents – you bring them into the world. You spend all this money, all this time looking after them. And then they hit about 16, and they just want to destroy you.” “You've got to be willing to care more about your mates, then then you care about staying comfortable.” “I still don't feel like a man… probably because I got these little boy legs.” “When we're all playing the game - all on autopilot - it's easy to be assholes to each other.” Find Tom on Instagram at @tomorrowman_au or at www.tomharkin.com.au. In this episode:Mike and Ed discuss Thor's tempter tantrum that tore up city property and demolished at least one private citizen's car. Stark Corp. has volunteered to pay for the damage this time, but what is the long term solution when superheroes behave badly? Also, Thor went away with an alien robot; or was that the government sending the god to his room for a time out? In this issue:Thor acts belligerently in New York City, and people are scared. The Avengers race to the scene to see if they can placate Thor. They don't, but nothing happens, Thor is in a mood. Meanwhile in Asgard, Loki is bending the ear of Odin and poisoning his mind about Thor. And then, Thor returns to Asgard to meet with his father, although Odin refused to see him. Loki then reaches into the future to influenced Zarrko, the Tomorrow Man, from the distant future, to return to the 20th century to battle Thor. Zarrko, who had forgotten about his interaction with Thor, remembers, and returns to our time with a giant robot, whereupon they cause wanton destruction. Thor meets them in battle and finds himself unable to overcome the robot (as Odin has halved his strength). In order to save the Earth, Thor agrees to return to the 23rd century with Zarrko to do his bidding.Assumed before the next episode:People are wondering if Thor is on the level. This episode takes place:After Thor has departed to the 23rd century with Zarrko, the Tomorrow Man! The Tomorrow Man is the archetype of procrastination, hesitation and laziness. This archetype thrives on those who feel like they have nothing but time; endless opportunities that can "just be done tomorrow". This, of course, is an illusion. Tomorrow won't always be there for us. Time is limited. Opportunities...fleeting. In this episode I talk about how to avoid becoming this archetype. Enjoy! Like the content? Jarrad Asquith is a facilitator at Tomorrow Man, a workshop designed to help men of all ages break through the traditional male stereotype and giving men the complete tool kit to live a full life. On this episode we have a deep round table discussion about a number of topics not often spoke about. Jarrad shares with us his background, but quickly opens the conversation right up and we get extremely vulnerable very quickly. We discuss masculinity and what it means to us individually and some of our experiences through the years and how it shaped our 20's. The ever evolving definitions of it is so hard to define and with so many opinions out there it can be a confusing space. The conversation takes another turn when we talk about some of our toughest hardships of late and how having the deeper and raw conversations with friends, got us through. Opening up to your mates can be challenging, especially if you don't exercise your emotional muscle frequently. Jarrad explains what this means and how to free it. Jarrad gives some great insights into normalising the conversation and integrating it into your every day conversations with friends. We talk about saying 'I love you', crying as a man and do the 'Hero, Hardship & Highlight' exercise as well as plenty of banter and laughs. We hope this episode inspires you to take initiative in your friendship circle, be the leader and start the conversation. It will benefit every person involved. Recruitment Journeys: The Podcast Series (from Mint Recruitment)
This is probably one of the most open and authentic conversations I’ve yet had on the “Recruitment Journeys” podcast. Adam Kurdas is remarkably honest and lays himself wide open as he talks to us about why he seemingly walked away from an exceptional Recruitment career, the likes of which many of us could only wish for. Adam was 13 years with Six Degrees Executive, and operating at Director level, when he decided to walk away from it all to pursue a whole new direction, and whole new purpose, with Tomorrow Man. Adam talks openly about the factors that caused him to make that transition out of Recruitment, an industry that had given him so much. This podcast episode is called “The Recruiter Who Followed His Vocation” and I really hope you enjoy it.
I met Tom Harkin, founder of Tomorrow Man, in 2019 at a facilitated event run by Lululemon. 150+ legends were there to hear Tom speak about masculinity, what it looks like today and what it could look like tomorrow. Tom took us through some powerful exercises that opened up my eyes which is why I've brought him on the podcast. He struggled with his own masculinity growing up, wishing he could be like the traditional bloke that was sold to him as a kid. On the night he said he hates public speaking and still gets nervous, wondering why he puts himself through that. But it's obvious to see that this guy has a massive heart to help guys, blokes, dudes and little dudes to redefine what masculinity is through disrupting the traditional stereotype of what it means to be a man, build emotional muscle and talk with greater depth, and reinvent a more flexible version of tomorrow's man. David Estrada, Chief Legal Officer at Nuro, joins host Grayson Brulte to discuss the leading factors of the mobility revolution. David kicks off by sharing the familial inspiration that shaped his well-rounded perspective. The two dive right in to how mobility has changed over the past two years and the role that tech companies’ heavy investment in self-driving cars will shape the future. David then shares his perspective on how an elected official’s first impression of riding in an AV compared to his own. Grayson and David dig into how the vision of Larry Page at Google pushed investment and development into AV. David then shares insights on driving behaviors and what kinds of trips can be replaced by AVs. The two look at what’s next for Nuro’s AV delivery services, why Houston as the ideal test market for AV delivery services, the benefits of Nuro’s vehicles and the greatest challenges for scaling services. The AV conversation shifts to why SAE Level 2 automated systems will eventually become commonplace in future vehicles. And finally, “Tomorrow Man” offers his insights on flying cars and the challenges that urban air/eVTOL must overcome to increase widespread adoption and development in major cities worldwide. Tom Bell has spent the last fifteen years speaking to people in a real, honest and impactful manner. He began working with groups of people through The Reach Foundation, with the legendary AFL player, Jim Stynes. He has worked with over 100,000 people: from high-level corporate executives, professional athletes to your everyday teenager. His work evolved from working with Jim into the organisation Tomorrow Man.They’re mission is to disrupt the stereotypes that surround what it means to be an Australian man. What does it mean to be a bloke today? And what do we want it to look like tomorrow? The tide is changing for men young and old and the outdated stereotype is leaving some of our mates, dads, sons, uncles, teammates, workmates and brothers stranded without the tools for a healthy life.In today’s world a lot of men are suffering as a result of not being able to open up emotionally.Holding everything together, not showing vulnerability, being the mate, the partner, the dad, the brother without a space to let go and be supported is taking its toll.Suicide is the biggest killer in Australian men between 15-44.This podcast was an emotional one for me after losing my brother, Sam to suicide last year.Yet, part of me wants to learn and understand suicide more and to be able to play a part in suicide prevention. More needs to be done. Through my own grief after Sam’s death I realised just how important our connections are with the people we love in order to find strength and resilience. I feel as a woman that asking for support is something that’s accepted. Yet I’ve watched a lot of men that I care deeply for suffer from the pain of mental illness, from ex-boyfriends, to friends to my brother, and also those men who have been my patients.I’ve heard a consistent message from them that they don’t always feel ok with sharing their struggles and vulnerabilities or in getting help, and that’s really something I wanted to learn more from Tom about.I found out about Tom when I called my friend Claire Eardley for some support: Claire’s son Kai sadly ended his own life in 2016. She has since started the kaifella foundation and has raised over $100,000.To quote Claire from the website:I believe a peer-based program available to young men, which helps to erase the tough macho stigma associated with our Australian male culture, and provides them with some skills to navigate mental illness and crises they will inevitably endure in life, is an important piece of education that is not available in our education curriculum today. If you wish to donates will go directly to support delivery of the program, Man Up, currently being delivered in Victoria and Ireland by Tomorrow Man facilitators Tom (who you hear in this interview) and Tom Harkin.Tomorrow Man.Tomorrow Man aim to disrupt and evolve the stereotype of masculinity - where did the rules originate and who made them? They want to redefine what it means to be a man and provide a relevant emotional skill set that can be applied in the real world for the men of today and tomorrow.Enabling men to strengthen their emotional muscle allows them to develop stronger supportive relationships, express themselves with clarity and confidence when under pressure and most importantly gives them the ability to ask for support when they need it without feeling weak or like a failure. They work in education, sporting clubs professional and amateur, workplaces and partner with aligned brands on unique projects with a social impact. Tom and I caught up at Hotel Miami – a new co-work, studio and event space. They were wonderful hosts to us with this podcast and I just want to give a little shout out to Darren for letting us use the family heirlooms for this interview.I hope you enjoy this episode with Tom BellJess xx
