Mike and I had a great time talking to Bill Summers (who was in Herbie Hancock's band The Headhunters)! We talk about various drums, his first meeting with Herbie Hancock, and the famous sound Bill created for one of the best known Jazz songs ever ... called Watermelon Man... Bill even demonstrates for us how the sound was created. About Bill: During the 1990s, Summers played with Los Hombres Calientes along with co-leader of the group, trumpeter Irvin Mayfield and Jason Marsalis. However, Summers has a much longer musical career, often working behind the scenes on film scores for various movies such as The Color Purple and the television miniseries Roots with Quincy Jones. He also played with Herbie Hancock during The Headhunters years, and is mentioned in passing by the liner notes of The Headhunters' 2003 release Evolution Revolution as contributing to that recording. Check out the Headhunters newest album (sections of 4 of the new songs can be heard on our podcast) THE HEADHUNTERS - Speakers in the House released in November 2022: Speakers In The House is the legendary jazz-funk ensemble's first new album in 11 years. Co-lead by percussionist Bill Summers and drummer Mike Clark with support from NEA Jazz Master Donald Harrison on alto saxophone, The Headhunters latest studio effort arrives just in time to celebrate this American music institution's 50th anniversary in 2023, having formed around Herbie Hancock's classic recording, Head Hunters, in 1973. An eight-track set available on Ropeadope Records, highlights from Speakers In The House include the New Orleans' second-line grooves of "Rocking At The Mole House," the world music-influenced jazz-fusion of "Kongo Square" and a modern post-bop re-imagination of the classic Headhunters' composition "Actual Proof," first released on their 1974 album, Thrust. Joining Summers, Clark and Harrison for the recording are keyboardist Stephen Gordon and bassist Reggie Washington plus special guests Jerry Z on organ, One Drop aka Scott Roberts on drums, Fode Sissoko on Kora and Ashlin Parker on trumpet. ******** KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site) Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. Welcome to Episode #107 of the Blue-in-Green:PODCAST which this week sees Imran connect with Chris Bestwick and Kishon Khan from Archie the Goldfish. Headed up by guitarist Bestwick and trumpeter Graeme Flowers, the duo set about this new musical venture during the pandemic lockdown in 2020 resulting in their debut 'Hidden Depths' released through Ropeadope Records that same year. UK-born but now residing in Helsinki, Chris Bestwick boasts an incredible resume that has seen him perform alongside revered names including James Taylor and Ali Slimani as well as creating music as part of the Finnish collective Timeforsoul, not to mention his releases as a solo artist in his own right. Bestwick's credentials are matched by his Archie the Goldfish collaborator, Graeme Flowers, who can not only boast serving as a member of the funk & soul band Down to the Bone but also chalking up performances with the Brand New Heavies and Kyle Eastwood among countless more names. The sublime five-track, instrumental EP presented some inspired compositions that has since paved the way for even more music under "Archie" umbrella. Last year's 'Water & Light' EP saw the inclusion of vocalist Nadia Basurto amongst the band's line-up along with the incredibly versatile Kishon Khan on Rhodes and a new label home with the hotbed of global grooves, Funkiwala Records. As co-founder of Funkiwala along with trombonist Justin Thurgur, Khan is a boundlessly talented musician and composer in his own right having performed with an array of artists and bands as well as having released a slew of projects as founder of Lokkhi Terra. Свежее и радостное настроение запечатлено в новом релизе The Upside Of Down пианиста Joe Alterman. If a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, how many miles will it take for reparations for America's enslaved descendants to find a home? Backed by Analog Players Society and Masta Ace's debut hit, Home In America, Erika and Whitney do a deep dive into their first season's journey and uncover shades of gray and pain in their unusual black and white partnership. But first, a Lord Of The Rings, epic-remix, monologue tells the story of the long, harrowing journey begun by reparations pioneers long ago. Then a new playlist is created to entice their favorite reparations warriors, and opponents, to reappear and bear witness to their reparations journey today. While the pair revisit their best hits, the duo is encouraged to make an all-out sprint toward their season's final destination, slavery's home, The Whitney Plantation in southern Louisiana. And, like the haunted place inspired by Toni Morrison's mythological "Sweet Home," this plantation tells the story from the slave's point of view. Finally, the pair retrace their steps, only to find themselves at the beginning of the end, in the mother of all lands, the great continent of Africa. Now in the belly of the beast, at the Cape Coast slave dungeons, they ask the ultimate question, can America go through the door of no return and come out the other side, whole? Or will America's impractical arrangement and immoral history destroy its own home from the inside out? “Home in America” is by Analog Players Society and Masta Ace, produced by Ben Rubin. The single will be released on all platforms on June 18 by Ropeadope Records." "'Home in America" features NYC jazz greats: tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin (David Bowie/Blackstar), pianist Orrin Evans (the Bad Plus), bassist Dezron Douglas (Ravi Coltrane), and drummer Eric McPherson (Fred Hersch Trio). https://www.analogplayerssociety.com/ https://benrubin.com/ https://www.mastaace.com/ https://ropeadope.lnk.to/HomeinAmerica For more info about this episode, please visit https://reparationsbigpayback.com Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

Welcome to Episode #86 of the Blue-in-Green:PODCAST which sees Imran secure time with Bright Dog Red drummer and founder, Joe Pignato. The improvisational jazz collective from Albany, New York, are set to release their fourth album with Ropeadope Records - a fantastic live set recorded in November 2020 at Shapeshift Lab studios which sees its official release June 2021. Entitled 'In Vivo', the live and improvised set gives wonderful insight to how Bright Dog Red create music in this context and it's genuinely a thrilling set. The band's debut album, ‘Means To the Ends’ (Ropeadope Records, 2018), served as a fascinating introduction to BDR’s incomparable concoction of improvised jazz boldly mixing with elements of hip-hop and electronica; their follow-up record, 'How's By You?', would come as soon as the following year and incredibly seemed to plunge the band deeper within its own creation of psychedelic electronica but still managing to see them soar under these even more extreme conditions. 'Somethin' Comes Along' (2020) saw BDR revisit the rule book once again for a two-disc album showcasing some stunning compositions brought to life by an awesome line-up of musicians. Imran caught up with Joe Pignato to discuss 'In Vivo', the day of recording at Shapeshifter, Joe's production moniker of u.joe and what's next for Bright Dog Red. www.blueingreenradio.com TuneIn: bit.ly/2LBK0BD The Blue-in-Green:PODCAST unveils new episodes on the first, second and third Mondays of the month. Welcome to another episode of SOMETHING came from Baltimore. My name is Tom Gouker and I will be your host for the evening. If you have listened to past episodes of Something came from Baltimore, you know that I have a “thing for Big Bands”. You heard me a “thing” Recently I interviewed “Swingadelic” from NYC, Njet Njet Nine from Sweden, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, The Dirty River Jazz Band from San Antonio Texas, Derrick Garner and the Big dig! Band for Winnipeg. In my opinion, Big Bands are sexy, expensive, and they knock on the door of our rich jazz past with respect and take it to the next level. These bands were common in the 40’s through the 60’s and now, when at great one comes around you have to take notice, like this one BT ALC Big Band. BT ALC Big Band is based out of Boston, Mass BT stands for trombonist Brian Thomas, and the ALC stands for trumpeter Alex Lee-Clark and jointly they hold down this musical unit. Formed in 2011, and there latest recording was released in 2019 on the Ropeadope Records called, “The Search for Peace”. This group brings the big band…but they also bring the FUNK. I recently learned about the BT ALC Big Band through a Spotify playlist that was “created especially for me” and here it was…a song called, “The Iguana” a wonderful single that blew me away. The Iguana was released on August 27, 2020 and I cannot turn enough people onto this song. It is the BT ALC Big Band with a little help form Erik Krasno and Alan Evans (from Soulive) and Karl Denson (from Slightly Stoopid, the Tiny Universe and basically everywhere) In this interview we will chat with Brian Thomas and Alex Lee Clark about the band, there 2019 release called, “the Search for Peace” and “The Iguana” Brian Thomas and Alex Lee Clark welcome to Something came from Baltimore. 056: Aaron WhitbyGood morning! This is Play It Like It’s Music. I’m Trevor, thanks for listening. On Wednesday, September 16th of 2020 Music is not content, it’s connection.Today we are blessed to have Aaron Whitby with us. But first here’s a random thought: Music used to be important. And it was a haven for the self important. It still sort of is, but musicians no longer make the same level of impact economically or culturally. It’s not quite running on fumes, but nowadays most of us would be happy for musicmaking to be merely sustainable. Some might even say that being sustainable is better than being important. But guess what? Back in that golden age when music was quote “really important”, it was not sustainable then either. What I mean is that we take our literal life in our hands when we choose to set about making music. It’s a risk, man. We’re actually getting closer to sustainability now, you could say it’s a beautiful time (aside from it being the apocalypse). Most of the time music works out ok if you work hard enough, make decent choices and keep your priorities more or less in line. But it’s not a magic ticket to some rarefied kind of existence where you get to hold yourself above other people. I mean, in America you can run your business however you see fit, but there are two sides to this coin: you find the fan who worships at the altar of the musician they love, and the musician who sometimes seems like they might just be seeking to be worshiped above all else - whose ego may be running the show.I won’t name any of them, but you know the trope. You probably also know that it’s not that simple. Not all musicians are provocateurs, serial abusers, pedophiles, womanizers, drug smugglers, tax cheaters or general get-somethin-for-nuthin types. Nor are we all deadbeats, addicts, vagrants and underearners. Most of the time we start out just wanting to play. Not knowing where the train is actually going, we chose to follow the energy and inspiration to wherever it may lead. But when an artist gets a little traction and starts working with investors (and that’ll be most of the artists you’ve heard of, barring almost none), oftentimes the investor will only stay happy if the artist continually generates energy around themselves, in order to generate attention for the music and get the numbers up so that the investor can profit. It’s not just a label or what have you, but it’s all the members of the artist’s team whose livelihood (and future) depends on those same numbers. It becomes a self-perpetuating cycle: artist “just wants to make music”, gets some help in the form of a band, production team, label etcetera. Then the pressure starts to multiply. Every person added to the team is a new set of mouths to feed and before you know it, the artist has to become a factory of attention-getting tactics. Only some of which are related to creating excellent and satisfying music. They have to meet those numbers or the show falls apart. It’s an obligation entirely separate from the creative process. Folks wonder “where everything went wrong” but it’s part of the design. Basically, the music business will turn you into a pirate, and if you don’t want that to happen then you’re probably better off digging into what you’re really after and why. And if what you want is quote-unquote “real music” then keep listening because today we’re talking to a live one.(Which is good, because I’m about talked out here. )The point is Music is literally the most important thing for us here at the show. You just have to take the music seriously and not take yourself too seriously. The folks on here tend to really bring it.[Photo by Michael Weintrob]So. Aaron Whitby:is an award-winning record producer, composer/songwriter, pianist, engineer and educator born and raised in London, England and a longtime resident of Brooklyn, New York.Whitby is best known for his work with longtime collaborator Martha Redbone, who we heard from last week. Whitby and Redbone are recipients of many awards and are currently developing a musical commissioned by the Public Theater in NYC.[Photo by Molly Magnusson]Mentored by Ohio Player/Funkadelic Walter ‘Junie’ Morrison, Whitby has recorded with; Natalie Cole, George Clinton, Randy Brecker, Lisa Fischer, Tony Trischka, John McEuen, Raul Midon, Neil Sedaka and Rodney Holmes among many others. He has performed with Nona Hendryx, Brian Jackson, Vernon Reid of Living Colour, Ben Sollee, Mino Cinelu and Brooklyn Raga Massive among many others. He and Martha have been stacking up awards and commissions. That’s ongoing. But with Cousin From Another Planet, his debut album as a frontman, Whitby comes full circle to his jazz and funk roots pulling together an amazing cast of friends to realize his musical vision, as described by Greg Tate, “a funk-da-fied jam session feel undergirding tight, knotty jazz-smart progressions”. With tunes inspired by the animated energy and profound innocence of his young son, humorous lyrics that celebrate empathy and empowerment and musicians given the freedom to take the music wherever it feels good. According to Tate, this album is “one of this era’s hardiest re-dedications and festival-tent revival of soulful and exploratory jam-gnocity.” Cousin From Another Planet live onstage is a music and visual experience accompanied by a video artshow by VJ Lady Firefly (who has also worked with Dave Chappelle and The Roots) to capture the colorful, cartoonish and movement-inspired worldview.Like I said, we got a live one here. Ropeadope is a collaborative community, a brand, a moving force with a life of its own that is larger than life. Founded at the close of the last century, Ropeadope has taken the path less traveled, always following the music where it wants to go. From historically significant records with celebrity names to completely unknown artists, Ropeadope has crossed boundaries and defied music business logic to create a truly unique company that continues to release great music. Ropeadope is a story of inclusion. We view the world as a place of one, where music is a unifying force connecting all of us. We accept that musicians know their art better than businessmen do. We know that this concept, this thing called Ropeadope, is larger than any of us. And so we follow wherever Ropeadope may lead. -------------------For more information on Ropeadope, visit:Ropeadope.comfacebook: @ropeadope99IG: @ropeadopeTW: @ropeadopeRopeadope on BandcampYouTube: 21Soul-------------------Music courtesy of Ropeadope:"I Can't Breathe" (feat. Our Breaking Distance Team has a really candid and sincere conversation with global musician and humanitarian Paul Beaubrun about Haitian culture and life growing up in Haiti, his newest album "Rasanbleman - Red Moon", creative energy, music and activism. We even discuss human trafficking and sexual violence throughout the world and, particularly, in Haiti. Paul blesses our team with a musical performance and showcase that took our breath away! You will not want to miss this very special episode! More About "Rasanbleman": Album link - https://ropeadope.lnk.to/Rasanbleman Video links https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GXuLFVPkNv8 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=an7Xc8BK2kE More About Paul: https://www.paulbeaubrun.com/ A scion of Haitian musical royalty, Paul has spent his life living to the beat. Son of the Grammy nominated band Boukman Eksperyans, his earliest memories are of rhythm and sound. Moving to New York as a youth he was inspired by his heritage to begin crafting a sound all his own. Constantly aware of his roots, the struggle of an immigrant and the drive of New York life, Paul began to create a path where music, activism and history meet. A unique and transfixing sound he calls 'Roots/Blues', Paul weaves his impeccable guitar skills, rich, vocals, musical ingenuity and cultural history together; all while performing a smooth melange of both English, French and Creole (the native tongue of his Haitian roots). Paul has played alongside some of the world's best artists including Ms. Lauryn Hill, Maxwell, Arcade Fire, Jackson Browne and Bob Weir. Worldwide performances include venues such as The Beacon Theater and Radio City Music Hall in NYC, Massey Hall in Toronto, The Ryman Theatre in Nashville, The House of Blues in Chicago, The Montreal Jazz Festival, Festival Internationale Nuits d'Afrique in Montreal, Le Trianon in Paris, The Paleo Festival in Switzerland, No Siesta Fiesta in Norway. These continued accomplishments make him one of the few artists coming out of Haiti to garner worldwide success. Paul has joined forces with Artists for Peace and Justice, and become an integral part of their organization. He is currently working in collaboration with Jackson Browne, and several other artists including Jon Russell (the Head and the Heart), Jonathan Wilson, Habib Koite, Jenny Lewis and Raul Rodriguez on an upcoming album for APJ. He also continues to be an active member and perform at their many events in the USA and Canada. This allows Paul to do what he loves; play music while also furthering awareness of Haitian art, culture and promoting the incredible talent of Haiti's youth. Paul’s album titled 'Vilnerab', released in 2015, soared directly to #1 on itunes in the World Music category, receiving rave reviews. In 2016, he was nominated for a Dora Award by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts for ‘Outstanding Sound Design/Composition’ in the production of Espwa/Espoir. In May of 2018 on Ropeadope Records, Paul released an english/creole album, ‘Ayibobo’ , continuing his evolution of sound into Rock/Roots/Blues music. On April 17th, 2020, Paul released his third album entitled ‘Rasanbleman’. Recorded live at the Cine Institute in Haiti, this album offers listeners a chance to enjoy the raw and emotive energy of uncut and raw power that Paul brings to his sounds.

Originally from Normal, IL, Adam Larson is an American saxophonist, composer and author. An endorsed artist for P. Mauriat saxophones, Boston Sax Shop “Heritage” necks and Vandoren reeds, mouthpieces and ligatures, Adam began playing saxophone at the age of 11. Described by critic Howard Reich of The Chicago-Tribune as “a player for whom the word ‘prodigious’ was coined”, by Peter Hum of the Ottawa Citizen as “a saxophonist who brings Donny McCaslin and Mark Turner to mind”, and by Nate Chinen of The New York Times as “the sort of jazz musician who gets flagged early on as a promising talent and then hustles to meet every requirement for success”, Larson has garnered numerous awards that distinguish him as one of the most promising artists of his generation. As a student, Larson was a member of virtually every national program dedicated to showcasing excellence in young jazz talent including The Grammy Band, Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, Betty Carter Jazz Ahead, YoungArts Jazz Fellows, Telluride Student All-Stars, Jazz Band of America among others. Upon graduating from University High school in 2008, Adam moved to New York City to pursue his BM and MM in Jazz Performance on full-scholarship from The Manhattan School, where he graduated with honors as a Master's student as the recipient of the William H. Borden Award for Outstanding performance in Jazz in 2014. Larson has released five albums; one for Ropeadope Records, two under the Inner Circle Music label and two produced independently. Larson’s most recent recording “Second City” received a four-star rating from Downbeat magazine, was listed as one of the best releases of 2017 in both Downbeat and Jazziz Magazine, and was prominently featured in several publications. Larson’s fifth record “Listen With Your Eyes”, was released on Ropeadope Records on September 6th, 2019. Larson keeps an active schedule with his own groups and as a sideman, having performed at several venues across the U.S. including The Jazz Standard, Birdland, The 55 Bar, The Jazz Gallery, The Blue Note, The Village Vanguard, Smalls, Jazz at The Bistro, The Jazz Estate, The Jazz Showcase, and several others.Adam has been a part of several tours that have allowed him to see more of the world than he once thought possible. He was a guest artist at the 2017 Sopot Jazz Festival in Sopot, Poland and has toured India,Taiwan, Holland, and Germany as well much of the United States. In 2015 Larson’s quartet was selected as one of ten ensembles to tour on behalf of the U.S. State Department's "American Music Abroad" program and toured Africa for 35 days visiting The Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, Benin and Ghana.Adam has authored two jazz etude books; “Leaps & Sounds: 12 Contemporary Etudes for Jazz Saxophone” Volumes I and II , that have been sold in over 30 countries and States. He is also the author of “Conversation Starters: 180 pieces of Jazz Vocabulary” and created and released a successful online masterclass dedicated exclusively to developing great technique, called “Lighting-Fast and Crystal- Clean”. He maintains an impressive portfolio of commissioned ensemble writing for school jazz ensembles, having written more than thirty original works to date. Adam was commissioned by the Illinois Music Educators Association to compose the All-State composition for the 2020 convention. Larson is a Teaching Artist for Jazz at Lincoln Center’s “Let Freedom Swing” program and has a diverse private lesson studio of Skype students from the U.S. and abroad.

“…blues-rock-funk attitude, but with a little bit of jazz language… and a delay pedal… and a whammy bar.” Ever wonder what it’s like to play with a diverse range of artists like Snarky Puppy, Erykah Badu, and Pat Boone, all while recording a weekly television show and releasing your own records at the same time? Guitarist Mark Lettieri talks about it in our inaugural interview. Some of Mark’s recent studio work includes sessions for David Crosby, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Adam Levine, Kirk Franklin, Lalah Hathaway, Lupe Fiasco, Keyshia Cole, and Xzibit. We caught up with Mark shortly after the release of his third solo album, Spark and Echo, and as he prepares for a joint tour of the Southeast US with keyboard phenom Shaun Martin.
