April Greetings Glocal Citizens! As you listen to this week's episode you may catch a hint of showers as part of the sound track for this conversation with long-time collaborator, Takoradi, Ghana's own Francis Brown. As the saying goes, showers bring flowers and in this two-part conversation we're definitely cultivating a bouquet of beauty and insights. Francis is one of the first professionals that I worked with when I arrived in Ghana; at that times he was a student at Ghana's National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) (https://nafti.edu.gh/p/). Since then, his career has flourished as founder and creative director of AnimaxFYB Studios in Ghana. He is an award-winning filmmaker trained in a number of different cinematic mediums, and has over ten years experience in the audio-visual industry. He is a member of the International Academy of Arts and Sciences (EMMY), a Jury at MIPCOM in Cannes and a frequent speaker on different film and television forums around the world. He was shortlisted for the 42nd Student Academy Awards (Oscars), won Best Animation Film at the Africa International Film Festival 2016 (AFFRIF), Best Creative Artist 2017 at the Black British Entertainment Awards, animator of the year at the 2017 Ghana UK Based Awards (GUBA) and also Best Animation at the 2018 Ghana Movie Awards. In 2019, face2face Africa named him one of the five African animators who can give their Hollywood counterparts a run for the money. In 2021, his short 3D animated film ‘ROOM 5' was nominated at Annecy International Animation Film Festival making him the only West African director to be nominated for the year and one of four films from Africa. He is a regular feature at Meta Cinema Forum, the largest Africa and Middle East film and cinema convention. He is also a planning committee member and artistic director of the Afrotino music festival where Latino and African performers will be meeting in a series of cross-country concerts in Panama, Costa Rica, Colombia and Mexico. This is our commentary track on the full Ultimate Cut of Zack Snyder's Watchmen.  This is the 3h35m cut of the film, with additional scenes, the Black Freighter cartoons, and a surprisingly different edit.  We recorded this (all in a room together!) back in early February, and it sort of got lost in the shuffle when the New Times came.  We hope you enjoy it as much (read: more) than we did making it.It's three and a half hours long.  We took a few breaks, which....you can hear.  Will we make it to the end?  Will we ever learn why Laurie is pushing Archie's buttons?  Will we successfully manage to order a pizza in time for "Hallelujah?"  All this and more in this very special episode of Untitled Watchmen Podcast.Start the commentary track as soon as the Warner Brothers logo appears, which should be black on a yellow screen (this was for the Prime rental edition - your own* copy may differ).* - You actually own a copy of the Watchmen Ultimate Cut

There's a chat about their relationship to The Black Freighter comic within the comic, our first time spent with Bernard and Bernard and how Siobhan would really feel if her partner could splinter himself into many versions of himself, just like Dr Manhattan did for Laurie. Warning: there are adult themes discussed in this episode but this is balanced out by a lot of childish talk about Dr Manhattan's blue manhood. In other words, a typical episode of Big Squid. Hey all! Today we are talking about the Watchmen comic. We will review the new show in a few weeks. Our goal with CBC is to review and discuss some of the biggest staples in comic book history. We will go over both the story itself and it’s importance in comics. First is Watchmen by Alan Moore. We came in with a bang! This might be the most important comic book for modern readers because in made adult themed comics main stream. Dark stories that talked mature topics existed before Watchmen but none were as successful or acclaimed. After Watchmen, the world had to start paying attention to the medium as a source for storytelling that was previously ignored and chalked up to child’s play. We will introduce the creators of Watchmen, writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons. Go over the quick synopsis of a New York with caped vigilantes. Discuss some of Watchmen’s special highlights like the Nine panel layout and the comic with a comic “Tales of the Black Freighter”. Then for the bulk of the review will go go over the entire story from start to finish. We finish thing with sequels, film, and series. As this is our first CBC we ask for your feedback even more than usual. This is a ‘heaver’ subject than the other comics we will be going over, so expect them to generally be shorter. Any advice would be appreciated! Special Thanks to Scott Holmes for his wonderful music. Altered duration and decibels. CCR Licence   YouTube: tinyurl.com/y4owmhdl Twitter: twitter.com/geekfreakspod Facebook: facebook.com/thegeekfreakspodcast Instagram: instagram.com/geekfreakspodcast E-mail: thegeekfreakspodcast@gmail.com Patreon: patreon.com/GeekFreakspodcast Store: redbubble.com/people/GeekFreaks Twitch: twitch.tv/geekfreakspodcast Site: geekfreakspodcast.com

Here are Russ's copious notes on this one... The black & yellow title cards are a kind of acknowledgement of the Watchmen trade dress. Legendary! DC “swish” logo! More Comedian! The use of the media/screens in the Comedian opening feels very Zack Snyder (and of course allows the film to adapt the Veldt ad to live action in a way that the print ads from the coms wouldn’t necessarily have done). 300 (his suite number) Veldt at no point in the film feels like a guy who has the physical presence to do what he does to the Comedian, which I guess is part of building a mystery but it feels like a weakness in the film since Snyder was the one who created the whole fight sequence, which was only barely hinted at in the comics. Unforgettable feels like a rift on what they did with the Richard Cheese version of “Down With the Sickness.” The movie uses music in conspicuous ways, but that one is especially on the nose. The lesbian super heroine in the opening credits was murdered, presumably by the Comedian and possibly for being a lesbian. Moth Man, seen in the opening credits being dragged off to a mental institution, later died when that institution exploded unexpectedly in 1992. This was documented in the first issue of DOOMSDAY CLOCK “Russ Have Atom Bomb” in opening credits. The implication that The Comedian may have been involved int he Kennedy assassination was very understated in the comics, as opposed to seen onscreen here. It sets the murder victim up early as unsympathetic. (Ditto Woodward & Bernstein) DP Larry Fong corrected me on Twitter for misidentifying him as the still photographer in a post recently. Why would it have taken until 1969 to get to the moon if we had Doctor Manhattan? All the things appearing onscreen together — Nixon’s election, the term limit repeal, and the Keene Act — at the same time is crazy. The idea of masks leading to the creation of superheroes is actually a clever inversion, and something that answers Nolan’s “did Batman ‘cause’ The Joker?’ nonsense. The “those were great times/you quit” bit is way less effective in the film than in the comic, and it almost feels like it was kept jut because of the gut punch of the comic but Snyder realized he couldn’t swing it. There are some lines like that throughout, including “What do you expect? The Comedian’s dead” Malin Akerman is so great and seems like such a nice person, I’m a little bummed by how not-great she is in this. She is a weak link in a lot of her scenes. “your mind goes to dark places, and you wonder why I keep the worst from you” This whole movie, more maybe even than the comics, is a tragic arc for Dan, who goes from being the wide-eyed idealist who did what he did because he believed it was right, to someone willing to go along with Veidt’s plot. “I’m 67 years old” was the most unconvincing moment in any Snyder movie. I like how jarring Jon was in a lot of the shots; it gave him an otherworldly feel that usually they try to avoid with VFX characters but was thematically appropriate for this movie. “What happened to the American dream? It came true: you’re looking at it.” - fascist state Moloch is Matt Frewer, of Dawn of the Dead fame. I believe he is the only repeated cast member. I always remember thinking that the cancer stuff was part of Ozymandias’s plot, a hoax to manipulate Manhattan. That is explicit in the movie. Did I forget chunks of the comic that made it so? That cafeteria where Manhattan appears for the first time is actually at the same disused insane asylum that appeared in Psych and Riverdale, among many, many others. The scientist who finds Manhattan on Mars — the guy with the glasses — is actually Emil Hamilton from SMALLVILLE, who also had a minor role on MAN OF STEEL. Rorschach fantasizing that Laurie manipulated Jon into exile is a perfect metaphor for the way right-wingers like him talk about women in real life. There’s a shot of Rorschach stepping into a puddle, his foot pointed to 5 minutes to midnight as the puddle ripples out like a clock face. Superhero movies were not as common or nuanced as they are now when Watchmen came out, so deconstructing the genre was hard. The fact that Snyder clearly LOVES superheroes made the translation harder still. The superheroics return, prior to the “Hallelujah” sequence, was depicted as pretty unquestionably a positive thing. This ties into “flabby failure” Dreiberg still looking like a Hollywood leading man. It seems that the way Snyder decided to undercut the “epic-ness-“ of these sequences was to have them fighting regular people who go down easily, meet gruesome fates, and don’t make them seem particularly heroic in the doing of it. …Also, why did Laurie — the one who hated her superhero identity the most — bring the costume when she moved out of the military base? Shooting fire into the sky at the moment of climax is exactly as subtle as a Zack Snyder movie. Jesus, what is Snyder’s thing with people being dismembered by saws? The Tales of the Black Freighter thing is interesting here because while it was nice to see, the fact that the art in it looks like screen grabs from the animated series makes it kind of anachronistic. They did not have that computer coloring in the ‘80s. There is something kind of depressing — and it wasn’t explicit in the theatrical cut — about the fact that the knot-tops killed Hollis because of Dan’s actions. I kind of forgot that Bubastis wasn’t in 90% of this movie. HAAAAAAATE the change to Ozy’s speech. There was also no planting to the payoff of the kid and the news vendor dying together.

Hosted by Remi Lavictoire, Mr. Blahg, Ian Fults, Jonathan Colbon Podcast length: 1:10:08 This week on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, Rem, Ian, Jonathan dig deeper into "Watchmen" from 2009 and directed by Zack Snyder. We're very pleased to welcome Mr. Blahg, from The Under The Comic Covers Podcast which you'll find on the Podcastica Network. The PositiveConsidered at one time to be un-filmable, Watchmen is a dark take on the Superhero genre in an alternate United States where the U.S. won in Vietnam, and Richard Nixon is still President! Ian loved that the movie adaptation took very good care of Alan Moore's original Graphic Novel, and found the casting to be spot on, particularly Rorschach. Jonathan talked about the symbolism in the movie, which was abundant.  This is a film should be watched several times to be fully appreciated. The NegativeThe only small points we could find were the somewhat cheesy Leonard Cohen music during the 'Love Scene', and some fans will not enjoy this because of the comparison with the Graphic Novel. The VerdictWe had mixed opinions on which to do first, the movie or the graphic novel, but we all agree that Watchmen is a great story and is well worth exploring. Get more detail on Watchmen on IMDB Radio vs. The Martians Podcast As per Mr. Blahg's suggestion, learn more about David Zapanta Listener Feedback Cory Metcalfe This movie is truly outstanding, that is all Ian FoggoGrowing up in the 80's, this was a comic I stumbled upon, which was very hard to do when you live in an island. A few years after I read this, I even gave the complete series as a gift to a friend. I was completely stoked to see that this was going to be made into a movie, and as a comic book and Sci-Fi fan, thought that this was and has been one of the best Superhero movies put out. Athena NeillEnjoyed the movie. Loathed the Silk Spectre's costumes. Impractical and misogynistic in every way. I would like to light them on fire. David ZapantaThis movie is vastly underrated—and fan backlash to the altered ending overshadowed a pretty impressive page-to-screen adaptation. I do, however, think trying to cram 12 chapters into a single movie was overambitious. The source material would have been better served as an onscreen trilogy—really let the story expand and breathe. At the end of the day, I'm glad this movie exists. Great cast, slick cinematography, and a surprising (but necessary) fidelity to the comics. Snyder's Sucker Punch is loathsome; Watchmen is not. Mike GorhamThis was the first Blu Ray movie I ever watched. Breathtaking does not begin to describe it Corey BlantonI really enjoyed this movie. I still enjoy rewatching it. I think this movie was put together really well. The cast is fantastic. Some great use of song choice. I love the opening with "The Times, They Are A Changin'" by Bob Dylan that sort of sets up the world in which the movie takes place. Also "The Sound of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel was perfect for The Comedian's funeral. And how can you not like Rorschach in this? His dialogue is just plain awesome throughout this movie. I mean come on: https://youtu.be/B3lsJmwNO40Lisa LyonsThere was a time that this was a comic book that was unfilmable. But then, they also said Lord of the Rings could never be filmed! Watchmen was, without a doubt, one comic book that made me a comic fan. That and the wonderful Camelot 3000. So, going into this film, I knew the source incredibly well. Dr Manhattan was precisely how I imagined him, but stealing every scene, without a doubt was Rorschach. He was perfectly cast, and carried off with such aplomb by Jackie Earle Haley that I couldn't have imagined anyone else in that role... I'm still of two minds if the comic ending or the film ending is best. I mean the ultimate outcome of both is humanity uniting, but is an Alien invasion more or less believable? Finally, on the DVD release there was a short animation that takes the Pirates story that develops in parallel in the comic, and turns it into a stand alone story. Weird, strange, but good... Oddly reminiscent of Heavy Metal type cartoons. Anthony FarnsworthYay! Love mr blahg!I really enjoyed this movie, the graphic novel even more so. I read the graphic novel prior to watching the movie, in fact Watchmen was the first graphic novel i ever read and owned. I wasn't sure what to expect, just thought "hey a cliche superhero team, they're making a movie about it so it must be good"...cliche superhero team...boy was i wrong. Turning the page and seeing a giant exploded alien carcass is definitely up there with the top 5 times my mind has been blown, although the movie did it different, i rather enjoy both versions and can understand why they chose to go the direction they did in the movie, both work, but i sure would have loved to see cthulhu body parts scattered across a ruined Manhattan. A visual masterpiece, its very fitting with Zack Snyder's resume and i believe he did the graphic novel justice. Its one of those pieces of media that had me talking for quite awhile, unlike avengers which is a cut and dry superhero team movie, Watchmen presents many existential quandaries to think about which i find to be rare with your typical superhero movie. I would recommend both the movie and novel to anyone, the deleted scenes are just as enjoyable. Cant wait to hear the discussion fellas, take care. Ton de WitteI read the graphic novel first. When I saw the movie I was impressed with how well it followed the novel. Some things were absent and the ending was different but a great translation to film. And there are 3 versions of this movie, theatrical, directors cut and ultimate cut. Didn't see the last one which seems to have the tales of the black freighter in it so review all three if you can. Essential viewing this one as well as reading the graphic novel. Now do we understand who is locked up with whom and where ? Doug FergusonApparently a lot of people really don't like the movie... but I do! I think Snyder did a great job adapting the graphic novel, which was an ambitious undertaking to say the least. I think the casting was great and the tone was dark and mysterious. There were a few questionable changes, but overall I feel that they stayed true to the source material and I actually thought the ending change worked better for the cinematic medium. I'm sure Alan Moore would have hated it, but that's because he's Alan Moore. Though, part of me wonders about the project that only exists only in a parallel universe. Apparently Terry Gilliam was approached ages ago to adapt Watchmen and he turned it down saying that it couldn't be done in a single movie, but he would do it if it were a miniseries. I would have LOVED to see that, but it never came to pass... Ray RMy first viewing was the extended cut DVD - I found it long and tedious, a missed opportunity. I hear fans of the comic loved it but as a casual moviegoer I thought it could have been better. Nick JensenI really enjoy this movie and the graphic novel. Like a lot of the other posts, I read the graphic novel first and then saw the movie, and think it's a great adaptation. The parts that they changed, like the costumes and the ending, all really worked well; and honestly look better. I think one of the main reasons why a lot of the general public didn't really embrace the movie was because of it's marketing. They marketed this as a typical fast-paced action comic book movie, but this movie and the source material are more of a dramatic, noir detective mystery story. So people went in to the movie with the wrong expectations of what they were going to see. But I love this movie and can't wait to hear your discussion. Michael SimshauserI'm on the fence with the movie. There are things that just simply that the comic can do that the movie cannot. While I own this movie and the related DVDs (Tales of the Black Freighter & the Motion Comic), any discussion of this movie always makes me want to read the comic, not watch the movie. Might be a different state of affairs when I get my hands on the Director's Cut. My two cents on whether it's required viewing, perhaps not. But the comic is definitely required reading. For another point of view, Radio vs the Martians (another podcast) had a great recent episode discussing the movie and the comic and the history and the changes made between the comic and its film adaptation.   The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast is partially funded by Patreon. In this episode: Dr. Peter Coogan joins the crew to discuss his theory that the sequel to Watchmen doesn't need to be written, because it already has... Clues to the sequel to Watchmen By Peter Coogan This reading of Watchmen was inspired by a comment by Sara J. Van Ness in Watchmen as Literature (McFarland, 2010). She pointed to the excerpt from Under the Hood in chapter 1 and the paperclipped note on its first page, “‘We present here excerpts from Hollis Mason’s autobiography, UNDER THE HOOD, leading up t the time when he became the masked adventurer, Nite Owl. Reprinted with permission of the author’ (27). This ‘we’ is the novels only reference to the narrator” (p. 61). This comment inspired me to track down the identity of the narrator and it led to a series of discoveries about the novel. Read through these clues and see if you can figure out why there is no need for a sequel to Watchmen. How did Moore and Gibbons build the sequel into the text? These clues assume that Watchmen has been published diagetically (diagetic = in the world of the story). What does the diagetic publication of Watchmen imply about Veidt’s status in 1986? Who probably owns DC Comics in the world of Watchmen and what does that probable imply or indicate? I.9.4. What do Under the Hood and Gladiator have in common? What book is missing from Hollis Mason’s bookshelf? How is Hollis Mason’s authorship of Under the Hood connected to the authorship/source of the diagetic Watchmen? D1-1. Under the Hood excerpt. In the paperclipped note, who is “we”, where is “here”, and how do they have the permission of the author, Hollis Mason, who is dead? Who has inherited Hollis Mason’s copyright of Under the Hood. IV.15. Who has access to this conversation between Hollis Mason and Dr. Manhattan after Mason’s retirement? D-6. Who would have the ability to get Kovac’s arrest report and various childhood files? Or Malcom Long’s notebooks? VII.13-15. Who has access to the story of Dan and Laurie’s failed lovemaking? D-7. Why is “Blood from the Shoulder of Pallas” included? It doesn’t reveal anything about the background of the characters. It doesn’t supply any real information that contributes to an understanding of the larger story. IX. Who has access to Jon and Laurie’s conversation on Mars? This is a crucial conversation (more so than some of the invented conversations discussed below in the “Problems” section) because it explains why Jon returned to Earth and would therefore offer a real selling point for the book. D-9. Who has access to Sally Jupiter’s scrapbook? D-10. Who could have taken a picture of Veidt’s desktop, with calendar? XI. Who has access to Veidt’s discussions with Dan and Rorschach at Karnak? XII. Who has access to the events at Karnak? XII.20 What does the publication of Watchmen mean about Dan and Laurie’s agreement to keep Veidt’s plan secret? Problems with this theory: It seems unlikely that Moore and Gibbons intended this reading of Watchmen as they initially only planned 6 issues and originally intended to run letter pages after issue three and so included Under the Hood excerpts only as a placeholder until letter pages started. Moore originally planned to use MLJ’s Mighty Crusader characters and so started the story with the death of the Shield. All of these arguments are versions of the intentional fallacy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intentional_fallacy). Watchmen was published in September 1986, so the turnaround time from October of 1985 is problematic, but not impossible. Some of the depiction of the characters has to be declared fictional or speculative under this theory: All the Bernie/Bernard interaction at the newsstand, the Shea/Hira interaction on the island and the freighter, the police officers interaction in chapter 5 (and elsewhere), Godfrey and Seymour at the New Frontiersman, Veidt’s interactions with his servants and his role in their deaths. But some of these interactions could have been recorded by Veidt in his bugging and so might have been found. And other interactions might have come out of Congressional testimony, other investigations, or interviews published as part of the coverage of the revelations of Veidt’s role in the squid attack (such as the war room in chapter 10). Likely the inclusion of Tales of the Black Freighter is symbolic, either on the part of the source or “Moore” and “Gibbons” (the diagetic versions of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons). It’s also likely that many of the other texts mentioned in the book (e.g. The Day the Earth Stood Still, “The Architects of Fear”) are also symbolic.

First off, The Watchmen which opens March 6th with midnight screenings all over. Check out the interviews with Watchmen’s Head Sculptor Jack Gaureau who discusses the creation of the futuristic battleship and weapons. The guys also discuss the possibility of a Watchmen sequel based on the Tales of the Black Freighter or Allan Moore’s Minutemen.Next up, clips from The Horsemen with Dennis Quaid - a thriller directed by Jonas Akerlund about a detective tracking down mysteries which seem connected to the fabled four horsemen of the apocalypse. Finally, The Highwayman - the story of a young farmer in England who becomes a robber. The film was a true DIY indie project and Eric celebrates by reading some of the poem which inspired the story while channeling inebriated Orson Welles.
