This flaming whiskey cocktail isn't just mixed, it's performed, as blazing liquid cascades between two metal mugs in a fiery arc that's as mesmerizing as it is risky. In fact, make this drink at your own risk – things can go sideways easy. We talk about what we did to keep things safe, but you need to do your homework too if you decide to try to make this one.   Of course, we dive into the story of Jerry Thomas, the legendary 19th-century bartender who created this showstopper and quite literally wrote the book on bartending. His Blue Blazer became the grandfather of flaming cocktails and established the art of theatrical bartending that still captivates audiences today.  Jules and I walk you through the technique, the proper equipment (those specialized Blue Blazer mugs exist for a reason), and—most importantly—the safety precautions you absolutely need to know before attempting this at home. Because while the Blue Blazer is undeniably impressive, it demands respect and caution.  Whether you're a cocktail historian, a pyro enthusiast, or just curious about the drinks that pushed bartending into performance art, this episode illuminates the legacy of Jerry Thomas and the drink that proved cocktails could be both craft and spectacle.  Blue Blazer recipe: You'll need 2 Blue Blazer mugs to make the drink and 2 different mugs (or Brandy snifters) to serve the drink.    Ingredients (makes 2):  4 oz cask strength scotch  2 tsp of sugar  3 oz boiling water    Steps  Warm the scotch – it lights and stays lit easier  Warm a separate brandy snifter or ceramic mug  Lay down a damp towel and clear your area of any flammable materials  Place your Blue Blazer mugs on the towel – this is your workspace  In 1 of the METAL mugs, pour in your ingredients – leaving the other mug empty for now  Light the drink on fire   Carefully roll the mix between the Blue Blazer mugs 5 times. Keeping your hands away from the top of the handle (it' gets hot over the receiving mug).  Place the empty mug over the flaming mug to put out the fire – once the fire is out you can continue to roll the drink between mugs to dissolve the sugar  IMPORTANT: pour your cocktail into a new vessel – either a warmed brandy snifter or a ceramic mug. The Grenade returns with the fallout from the 1989 Royal Rumble as we look at the weekend of January 21st - 23rd of 1989 in the WWF! Shortly after graduating from USC with a degree in journalism, Alretha soon realized herinterest in her major was not heartfelt. Instead of writing news stories, she wanted towrite plays and books. Several years later, her church gave her an outlet to fulfill herwriting desires through their Liturgical Fine Arts Department wherein Alretha pennedtwelve theatre pieces—the community response was overwhelming. This led to playsoutside of the church, including Alretha's One Woman, Two Lives, starring Kellita Smith(The Bernie Mac Show), directed by the late four-time NAACP Image Award BestDirector recipient, Denise Dowse. The production garnered rave reviews from criticsand audiences.In between plays, Alretha self-published her first novel, Daughter Denied, in 2008 andhas received glowing reviews from readers and book clubs across the country.Representing her book and plays, Alretha has been the guest on many radio shows andtelevision shows including San Francisco Public Affairs show Bay Sunday with BarbaraRodgers on CBS affiliate, KPIX. She was also interviewed by KTLA NewsEntertainment Reporter, Sam Rubin. In 2011, Alretha self-published her second novel,Dancing Her Dreams Away, and it was also well received. Her third novel, Married in theNick of Nine, spawned a four-book series that was acquired by Soul Mate Publishing inJanuary 2014. The series has since reverted to her. Owen Hart: Owen James Hart (May 7, 1965 – May 23, 1999) was a Canadian professional wrestler who worked for several promotions including Stampede Wrestling, New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), World Championship Wrestling (WCW), and the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). He received most of his success in the WWF, where he wrestled under both his own name and the ring name The Blue Blazer. Hart died on May 23, 1999, during his entrance from the rafters of Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri, United States. This podcast episode describes the untimely death of pro wrestler Owen Hart, a member of the famous Hart wrestling family from Canada. At WWF's pay-per-view event, held on May 3rd, 1999, Owen was supposed to make a dramatic ring entrance as his character, The Blue Blazer. The grappling hook used to support him was not up to code for such feat, which resulted in a large fall all the way to the mat. This was terrible publicity for the WWF, since chairman Vince McMahon had recently been faced with steroid distribution chares just seven years prior to this event. Owen Hart was a well-respected performer in the ring, as well as an admired man in his personal life. His widow, Martha Hart, would ultimately settle out of court with the WWF for millions of dollars. This led to high-level live entrances at wrestling events to be permanently banned by the company, following the accident.

So I think I might start doing bonus episodes bi-weekly and I think Miami Vice is a great show to cover. It has so many dope guest stars and so many crazy story lines.
