If you aren't living your truth, then you aren't living the life you are meant to live.Ray DeForest knows just how necessary it is to live your truth.Performer, producer, activist, community leader, Ray DeForest, may also be known to some as his popular theatrical character, Doris Dear. 3-time winner of the MAC Award, actress and comedienne Doris Dear, has been featured in numerous movie and TV productions, performs in her own sold-out cabaret-style shows, and stars in her series "Doris Dear's Gurl Talk" on the BroadwayOnDemand streaming service. Ray created the series at the height of the Covid pandemic as a way to bring Doris to a new audience while live theater was on hold. Ray writes, directs and produces the series now currently filming season 3. The show was an immediate hit and won the prestigious Silver Telly Award for season one.In addition to entertaining audiences and raising funds to support theatre development, Mr. DeForest is a member of the prestigious Dramatist Guild of America. It is through his lifelong love of theatre that Ray nurtured his storytelling and comedic talents, as well as his ability to connect with an audience and take them on an emotional journey. "Art requires reaction," he proclaims. Long before theatre life beckoned Mr. DeForest to Manhattan, he found himself growing up in 1950-1960s Staten Island, where idyllic "Americana" was a real-world version of Norman Rockwell's iconic paintings. But what is one to do when they don't fit the traditional mold? "Admitting who we are is never easy," states Mr. DeForest. But, this challenge of self-expression found a creative outlet through character development and performance and continues to be richly rewarded by audiences who react to the experience and find a safe space in his character's maternal presence. TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txAPDCjyOlY&feature=youtu.be “Vape is a parody. It reconsiders the misogyny and nostalgia for the 1950s through the #metoo lens. Significantly, it was written for comedic purposes. We are absolutely within our rights to write and perform a parody of Grease,” said Sketchworks Comedy writer and performer John D. Babcock III, who also portrays “Doody” in the parody. “I understand it is the point of view of Concord Theatricals that Vape is ‘derogatory' toward Grease and is not to be staged. That may be their opinion but does not give them the authority to suppress Vape and prevent it from being performed.” Babcock is also an active member of the Dramatist Guild of America. Sisters in Loss Podcast: Miscarriage, Pregnancy Loss, & Infertility Stories
There is a new webseries that has been all the buzz on Instagram, and its called Black Girls Guide to Fertility, created, written, and based on Sonhara' Eastman’s own battle with infertility. Black Girls Guide to Fertility tackles infertility in a profoundly intimate way that’s both dramatic and comedic without ever feeling rigid. It focuses on Ava, a 37-year old romance novelist, who faded into obscurity after finding love–and now finds herself on the rise again after self-publishing a diary detailing her fertility woes. Each episode is a recreation of Ava’s diary entry, adding a unique and compelling touch to the everyday struggle of infertility. I had the pleasure of prescreening the first two episodes and when I tell you, you do not want to miss this webseries. In this episode we discuss Sonhara’s vision, her personal infertility battle, and what is next with Black Girls Guide to Fertility. The webseries premieres on Friday, January 18, 2019 and if you are listening to this in real time that is two days away. Be sure to subscribe to their youtube page, and join us in the private Sisters in Loss community at sistersinloss.com for our Watch party on Tuesday, January 22 at 8pm EST. “Honesty and transparency make you vulnerable. Be honest and transparent anyway." - Mother TeresaDo you reveal and present your true self to the world? How can increased personal vulnerability result in greater professional successes? When considering gender roles, do you occasionally idealize a bygone era?Join host Chris Schembra in this week's episode of his podcast series, 7:47 Conversations, as he welcomes performer and entertainment producer, activist, community leader, and former Disney Mouseketeer, Ray DeForest, who may also be known to some as his popular theatrical character, Doris Dear. Winner of the 2016 MAC Award, actress and comedienne Dear has been featured in numerous movie and TV productions, and has starred in her own sold out cabaret-style shows. In addition to entertaining audiences and raising funds to support theatre development, Mr. DeForest is an Executive Board Member of the Pipeline Theatre Company and Member of the prestigious Dramatist Guild of America. It is through his lifelong love of theatre that Mr. DeForest nurtured his storytelling and comedic talents, as well as his ability to connect with an audience and take them on an emotional journey. "Art requires reaction," he proclaims.Long before theatre life beckoned Mr. DeForest. But, this challenge of self-expression found a creative outlet through character development and performance, and continues to be richly rewarded by audiences who react to the experience and find a safe space in his character's maternal presence. Bravo! In 2015, the 747 Club was founded by Mr. Schembra to create a conversational environment promoting Authenticity ~ Empathy ~ Vulnerability ~ Safety. In sparking dialogue between people from disparate backgrounds and experiences, with different interests and viewpoints, a sense of community has formed within this shared experience, creating real understanding and an acceptance of others. Through this podcast, a wider audience will now learn about the 7:47 Club’s incredibly important mission.Learning, listening, and growing through shared experiences ~ Welcome to the 747 Club community.
Each of us, even the youngest, has experienced grief: the loss of a pet, a home, a job, a parent, a child, a friend -- each requires a certain amount of processing, and The Grief Dialogues can help. Starting with a single entry in Island Theatre's 10-Minute Play Festival, The Grief Dialogues now constitute 6 plays, which will be performed here at BIMA on June 15th before going on to Seattle and New York City. Listen here as playwright Elizabeth Coplan, founder of this series of plays and author of one of them, explains their success. Inspired by stories of dying, death, and grief, the Dialogues have been shown in venues across the country, and use theatre to help facilitate conversation about this shadowy and near-taboo topic. Exploring the situations, relationships, emotions, aftermath, and logistics of death, the plays combine humor, heartbreak, and reality to offer an honest and provocative look at this difficult subject. With the help of Dr. Sharon Stanley of Bainbridge Island, who will be present after the performance for a question and answer period, the plays can help audience members vocalize and process their own experiences with grief and loss. Ms. Coplan, Dr. Stanley, and the actors hope that this new conversation about dying, death, and grief will lead to a better understanding of these and aid in closure after an event. Dr. Stanley and the plays' director, Wesley Fruge, were recently interviewed on Q13's "This Morning" show by Travis Mayfield, who will MC the Dialogues. To access those interviews, visit: https://youtu.be/arywHohSJy0 and https://youtu.be/sAkjio2LDvc. The Grief Dialogues will be presented June 15 at BIMA in the Frank Buxton Auditorium. There is a reception for ticket holders at 6 pm; the show begins at 7pm. The plays move on to Seattle in June and then to New York City, for a presentation with the Dramatist Guild. For tickets for the Bainbridge performance visit BrownPaperTickets.com. Tickets for the Seattle showings (June 18,19,26, and 27, 18th and Union Theater at 7:30) are also available at BrownPaperTickets.com.
