Predicting Disasters: Earthquakes, Scientists, and Uncertainty in Modern Japan (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2024) takes seriously attempts to reduce uncertainty around the timing, magnitude, and location of earthquakes in postwar Japan. Covering the period between early warnings about earthquakes in 1905 right up until the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, Kerry Smith explores the different ways scientists in Japan tried to predict earthquakes, how they sought to communicate their efforts to the public, and how understandings of disasters changed in turn. Smith thus carefully embeds each earthquake within its historical context, looking at how people reacted to individual earthquakes and how each earthquake fueled further efforts to understand seismology and plan for disasters. Predicting Disasters is meticulous, thoughtful, and provides new, historically grounded understandings of how earthquakes are approached in Japan today and why the promise of prediction has never quite left Japan. Predicting Disasters is sure to appeal to those interested in modern Japanese history, the histories of science and disasters, and anyone who has ever grappled with the idea of scientific uncertainty. Kerry smith is a personal trainer from Scotland who trains 70-100 year olds as well as her clients in the gym. I seen Kerry post quotes of fitness advice from her clients some of which were as old as 97 and I had to get her on to speak about how she actually trains people of that age and why? We get into lots of topics regarding how the sessions work and how she structures them, the mistakes she has made with her clients as well as how she works around all of the different requirements her older clients need. It turned out to be a fascinating episode and one I'm sure all personal trainers can learn from and all regular people can take inspiration from! In this episode, we have a special guest, Kerry Smith, a freelance writer and expert in media relations. We dive into the topic of storytelling and the interview process, exploring what makes a good story. Our enthusiastic hosts are excited to learn from Smith's wisdom and experience.Smith introduces herself as a serial entrepreneur however, she clarifies that her innovation lies in various writing forms, ranging from news publications to websites, ghostwriting, and now podcasts.Smith reflects on the evolving landscape of the industry, particularly the impact on journalism and editorial content. She highlights the shift from traditional print advertising to digital platforms, which has significantly affected revenue streams. The conversation delves deeper into the implications for professionals in the construction industry. Smith emphasizes the importance of contractors, architects, engineers, and the supply chain in telling their own stories, as there is a decline in business reporters covering their work. With limited media attention, companies must proactively share their achievements and projects. Smith's construction magazine, Saint Louis Construction News, plays a vital role in reaching out to these industry players and providing a platform for them to showcase their work.
This book announces the new, interdisciplinary field of critical disaster studies. Unlike most existing approaches to disaster, critical disaster studies begins with the idea that disasters are not objective facts, but rather are interpretive fictions--and they shape the way people see the world. By questioning the concept of disaster itself, critical disaster studies reveals the stakes of defining people or places as vulnerable, resilient, or at risk. As social constructs, disaster, vulnerability, resilience, and risk shape and are shaped by contests over power. Managers and technocrats often herald the goals of disaster response and recovery as objective, quantifiable, or self-evident. In reality, the goals are subjective, and usually contested. Critical disaster studies attends to the ways powerful people often use claims of technocratic expertise to maintain power. Moreover, rather than existing as isolated events, disasters take place over time. People commonly imagine disasters to be unexpected and sudden, making structural conditions appear contingent, widespread conditions appear local, and chronic conditions appear acute. By placing disasters in broader contexts, critical disaster studies peels away that veneer. With chapters by scholars of five continents and seven disciplines, Critical Disaster Studies (U Pennsylvania Press, 2021) asks how disasters come to be known as disasters, how disasters are used as tools of governance and politics, and how people imagine and anticipate disasters. The volume will be of interest to scholars of disaster in any discipline and especially to those teaching the growing number of courses on disaster studies. Contributors include: Dr. Scott Gabriel Knowle and Dr. Zachary Loeb, Dr. Ryan Hagen, Dr. Dara Z. Strolovitch, Dr. Claire Antone Payton, Dr. Aaron Clark-Ginsberg, Dr. Pranathi Diwackar, Dr. Rebecca Elliott, Dr. Susan Scott Parrish, Dr. Kerry Smith, Dr. Chika Watanabe, and Dr. Kenneth Hewitt. Dr. Jacob Remes is clinical associate professor in the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at NYU. Trained as a labor and working-class historian of North America, he is the author of Disaster Citizenship: Survivors, Solidarity, and Power in the Progressive Era (University of Illinois Press, 2016) and the editor, with Andy Horowitz, of Critical Disaster Studies (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2021). He is a founding member of the editorial collective of the new Journal of Disaster Studies and a series co-editor of the University of Pennsylvania Press book series Critical Studies in Risk and Disaster. Dr. Andy Horowitz is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Connecticut, and he also serves as the Connecticut State Historian. A historian of the modern United States, his research has focused on disasters and the questions they give rise to about race, class, community, trauma, the welfare state, extractive industry, metropolitan development, and environmental change. He is the author of Katrina: A History, 1915–2015 (Harvard University Press, 2020), which won the Bancroft Prize in American History. In this final installment of Chapter 5, Cheap but Costly, Rev. Kerry Smith dove into Sanctifying Grace. John Wesley believed this was the grace that continues to work on us throughout our lives. After we have been wooed by prevenient grace (though God never stops wooing), after we have responded to God's justifying grace (though this is sometimes a daily occurrence), we are empowered and made holy by God' sanctifying grace. This form of grace continues to make us into the person God created us to be. Rev. Smith preached from Romans 12:2, 9-21. Let us know your thoughts on sanctifying grace.
In this third sermon of Chapter 5, Free But Costly, Rev. Kerry Smith looks at justifying grace. John Wesley talked about justifying grace as the grace that produces a response in us, while prevenient grace woos us, justifying grace creates a response in us, we turn toward God and make a conscious response to accept God's grace. Rev. Smith preached from Ephesians 2:1-10. Let us know your thoughts on justifying grace.

Before we can know God or even understand God, or God's grace, prevenient grace is God's constant and continual pursuit of us. God's perpetual wooing of us. Kerry used Psalm 139 as the text to discuss prevenient grace. Check out this week's sermon, then find other aspects of the service on our website or our app.
This Sunday we welcome our new Senior Pastor, Rev. Kerry Smith. Kerry kicked off chapter 5, "Free but Costly." Throughout this chapter we will be focusing on grace, and more specifically, John Wesley's understanding of grace, and his understanding of the process of salvation. Kerry began this chapter looking at the story of Jacob, specifically Genesis 32:22—33:4. Find out more at www.wrumc.org or on our app.
This episode features music from the album From Anywhere by Reverend Baron and, an interview the hilarious stand-up comic Kerry Smith. Reverend Baron's new album is a beautiful masterclass in chill groovy poetry that eases you into peace and tranquility. Kerry Smith is the perfect combination of candid, silly and strange and I had a blast talking with her about topics ranging from feet pics, her attraction to short men, her almost law degree and of course her stand-up comedy. Enjoy!

This week's episode is the first in a three-part series that celebrates the 70th anniversary of Resources for the Future (RFF). Over that time span, RFF has had a significant impact on the fields of environmental economics and policy. In this episode, host Kristin Hayes talks with Ray Kopp, RFF's recently retired vice president for research and policy engagement, and Kerry Smith, an RFF university fellow (who also happened to be Ray Kopp's graduate school advisor). Kopp continues to lead the organization's Comprehensive Climate Strategies Program. Kopp, Smith, and Hayes discuss the 70-year history and legacy of RFF, the real-world impacts of its research, and how the act of conducting research itself has changed through the decades. They take a trip down RFF memory lane to explore how the world of environmental economics has evolved over the past 70 years—and how RFF has helped shape that evolution. To kick off 2022, we share one organisation's ongoing journey to establish a hybrid way of working. The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is a major UK charity and has been a much valued AWA client over the years. Executive Director of People & Organisational Development Kerry Smith and Head of Organisational Change Sarah Cousins share their story – from before the pandemic hit in 2020, to their plans and expectations for 2022. Covid-19 has, as for many organisations, changed the way BHF operates, how it raises funding to support its research and how it runs its retail operations. Mirroring these changes, its way of working has also significantly changed – fundamentally through embracing transparency, honesty and involving staff in planning the future way of working. The challenges of the pandemic to people's wellbeing, mental health and sense of certainty have created a much greater awareness of what their community need. People are at the heart of everything – even more so than before. Our guests discuss their “flexibly connected” programme; the creation of working together agreements; how they are supporting managers to consolidate the skills they need to manage hybrid teams; the evolution of blended location employment contracts; and their move into a new, smaller office, which has 50% less desks and is organised around activities, not neighbourhoods. So much has changed since March 2020 - so much of it for the better!AWA Host: Karen PlumFeatured guests: Kerry Smith, Executive Director of People & Organisational Development, British Heart Foundation https://www.linkedin.com/in/kerrysmithj/ Sarah Cousins, Head of Organisational Change, British Heart Foundation https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarahcousins/ British Heart Foundation website: https://www.bhf.org.uk/ BHF's new office: A “walk-through” was commissioned to help colleagues feel part of it, to understand the space and find their way around. On this week's Inside The L: The Podcast, presented by MaiKai Wellness, we caught up with La Salle swimming & diving Kerry Smith to chat about her first year with the Explorers, how the season is going, and Thanksgiving.
Kerry Smith's work is in Spirited Wellness. She is a Karuna Reiki Master, Medium and Psychic. In this podcast she explains all of the different work she does. As a part of this, she agreed to let me ask her questions about my life to show exactly what she does. She helped me understand why I didn't go to Thailand and my fear of cats. She then goes to the medium part and we communicated with my mother, father, grandfather and even an unexpected visit from my friend Ray, who have all physically died. What you are about to hear was amazing. She told me things from my father, mother, grandfather things they she had NO WAY of knowing. It brought me to tears and cleared up old unresolved issues that my mother, grandfather and fathers needed to tell me, that were important apologies they never told me when they were alive. Again, Kerry had NO WAY of knowing any of this. I must tell you, this reading cleared away old emotional blocks that I have had from each of them. Then Ray showed up and starts messing with my phone. What an amazing podcast. You may contact Kerry at 816-509-1046 Kerry@MySpiritedWellness.com

The author of the recently published book, "Creative Strength Training: Prompts, Exercises and Personal Stories for Encouraging Artistic Genius", Jane Dunnewold, will be giving a talk on August 12th at the BI Museum of Art about strategies and exercises for cultivating creativity. She will also offer a workshop on August 13th. In this 9-minute podcast interview, the author explains that having strategies for bringing forth our inner creativity, whether for writers or artists in any medium, is not unlike any athlete who trains with exercises that are both physical and mental. And this will be the subject of her lecture, relevant to anyone aspiring to be more creative. Copies of her book will be available for purchase and signing after the lecture. Jane has also been a teacher for over 20 years, and is a former president of the International Surface Design Association. "Surface design" in this context applies to the design of the patterns and textures on the surfaces of textiles (including, for example, quilts). In this interview, Jane also talks about the workshop she will be giving on August 13th that will incorporate principles from her extensive experience teaching surface design techniques that have a broad application beyond quilting. In our BCB podcast studio, two board members of the BI Modern Quilt Guild, Kerry Smith and Kathy Dwyer, also tell us about the Guild and about the upcoming Quilt Festival on September 10th. They explain that they are currently welcoming submission of quilts from local quilt makers. See the Festival page of their website. Tickets for the lecture can be purchased at Brown Paper Tickets, as can tickets for the workshop. Or visit the Guild's web page for the event. BCB apologizes for the poor sound quality of the skype connection to Jane Dunnewold during our BCB interview with her at her home in San Antonio, Texas.
