Spirit, God, Creator, Changing Woman, Goddess, Higher Power, White Buffalo Calf Woman, Allah, Wakan Tanka, Baiame, Quan Yin, Tengri; these are just a tiny fraction of the thousands of different names for spiritual and/or religious beings we humans respect and revere. While different spiritual duties may be assigned to different beings, perhaps the most common understanding that ties almost every tradition together (of course there are exceptions) is that ultimately, the universe is powered and ruled by Love. So it's understandable then, how frequently our spiritual and religious teachings remind and admonish us to love each other, and to love all of creation, as if these things external to our being were in fact ourselves. Pretty radical concept! And yet, quite simple: Love rules all, love conquers all, love is all there is.Your cohosts at the Psychic Funhouse have decided to start at the beginning by asking: how do we love ourselves? The BirthCircle | Birth, Pregnancy, & PostPartum Conversations
Today we talk to Marinah Farrell, Midwife, Activist, and Executive Director of Changing Woman Initiative, a Native American centered health and justice organization. Marinah's work serves to help indigenous peoples reclaim sovereignty over reproductive medicine, and provide safe, culturally integrated healthcare to Indigenous women in New Mexico and Arizona. We talk about the Changing Woman initiative, the meaning behind the name, and what the organization does for tribal communities in healing through birth and midwifery. We also talk about Marinah's induction to the birth world and what led her to what she believes is her life's calling. We discuss the historical course of midwifery being overtaken by obstetrics and the resulting loss of midwifery traditions in indigenous communities. We also touch on the different types of midwives, particularly in the Americas. We discuss cultural misalignment between birth providers and birthing people and the issues that can arise when people don't have access to birth providers from their own communities. We discuss the way that the current North American midwifery associations are still not doing much to uplift or encourage midwives of color, particularly in indigenous communities, and what needs to be done in order to help overcome the issue. We also talk about how governments shift blame to midwives for maternal mortality rates to avoid prioritizing maternal health. We talk about restoring traditional culture to midwifery in order to strengthen the practice as a whole, as well as some of the perceptions of midwives in our modern world and how the stigma makes it difficult for traditional midwifery to regain a foothold in society. We also discuss how all women regardless of cultural origin can reach back to reclaim their ancestral birthing traditions and restore life to their own communities without appropriating another culture's roots. Finally, we discuss the nuance of trying to determine one's own roots, especially when we are separated from our roots by adoption or other circumstance, and how to approach finding the traditions that are authentic to you. We talk about way that connection to our traditional birth cultures and our foremothers works to heal individuals and communities. This week, we have a special episode about the long and winding energy transition in an often overlooked place: the Navajo Nation—the largest Indian reservation in the United States.Journalist and climate policy expert Julian Brave NoiseCat is our guide.Ten percent of Navajos lack access to electricity. Some spend up to $700 per month on fuels to travel to places with electricity, or charge electronics in their cars and trucks. But the Navajo Nation isn’t exactly an energy-poor place. In fact, until recently, the reservation was home to two of the largest coal strip mines in the world. In recent decades as many as five coal-burning power plants surrounded Navajo lands. For many Navajo, power lines connecting coal to major cities like Phoenix and Los Angeles, have come to symbolize this vastly unequal system. We’ll look at the deep history of energy extraction and colonialism that led to the current clean-energy transition for the Navajo people.Featured in this episode: Wahleah Johns and Andrew Curley.Follow our co-hosts and production team:Leah StokesKatharine WilkinsonStephen LaceyJaime KaiserA Matter of Degrees is a production of Post Script Audio. Gen and Jette talk about Shade, The Changing Girl - a collection of comics on DC's Young Animal imprint - about an alien that embodies a teenage girl and all the baggage that they both carry. Show Notes: My Chemical Romance will always be amazing. Jette's funeral will be a recreation of the "My Helena" video. The Umbrella Academy is LIFE - Klaus forever! Doom Patrol is another comic on YA that has been made into a tv show. Cecil Castellucci was in Bite and Nerdy Girl before going solo. Other stories by Cecil are "Boy Proof" and "We Have Always Lived on Mars" - soon to be a movie directed by John Krasinski. Marley Zarcone is the artist behind these comics. Gen and Jette may go on a tangent raging about the "live-action" remakes of the Disney animated films of their childhood. Their opinion is real. Saga is a comic by Fiona Staples and Brian K. Vaughn on Image Comics. Yes - Gen mentions Supernatural and Harry Potter again for anyone who's counting. Shade, the Changing Girl stems from Shade, the Changing Man and also continues in Shade, the Changing Woman.

Greetings (for the second to last time), you Dangerous Humans! That's right, this is the penultimate installment on of our Young Animal Gatherum series of episodes. Doncha just love saying the word "penultimate"? Seems like the sort of word people use incorrectly all the time... like "prolific". Am I rambling? Well, yes... because really, there isn't much to say here about the books we're reviewing this week. They are all *penultimate* issues, and the seams of truncation have become rather visible as our creative teams stomp on the brakes to get their stories wrapped up. -- Today's discussions originally aired in segment form during the following episodes of the Weird Science DC Comics Podcast: Episode 183 (07.08.2018) - Shade the Changing Woman #5 Episode 184 (07.15.2018) - Eternity Girl #5 Episode 185 (07.22.2018) - Cave Carson Has an Interstellar Eye #5 Episode 186 (07.29.2018) - Mother Panic: Gotham A.D. #5 -- weirdcomicshistory@gmail.com www.patreon.com/chrisandreggie www.weirdcomicshistory.blogspot.com
We've reached the second-half... of the second-season, and if we're being honest... it feels like, for the most part, we're just lumbering toward that finish line. Join Chris (@acecomics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) as they examine the four Young Animal offerings for signs of truncation... and, you know them... they're probably going to kvetch about Doom Patrol's tardiness yet again! Only two episodes to go... plenty of insanity still to go around! Oh, and if you're listening to this on the day of release... A true renaissance woman, Cecil Castellucci's work spans mediums. The New York-born, Montreal-raised writer is currently best known to comic book fans as the writer behind the latest reinterpretation of the late Steve Ditko character Shade – Shade the Changing Girl and now, Shade the Changing Woman as part of DC Comics' Young Animal imprint, spearheaded by Gerard Way – lead singer of My Chemical Romance. Fitting, since Cecil tells us why making comics is like being in a rock band. She would know since she was better known as the lead singer of Nerdy Girl in the early '90s and later as the solo artist Cecil Seaskull. These days, her involvement in music has turned to opera as the librettist behind the comic book themed Les Adventures des Madame Merveille and her latest, Hockey Noir, which recently came to Montreal and Toronto before heading to Europe in October 2018. If that weren't enough, Cecil is a young adult novelist and up for a “Best Short Story” Eisner in 2018 for Ethel Byrne, a short comic inside Mine! -- a comic anthology benefiting Planned Parenthood. You can also find more of her comics writing in the graphic novel Soupy Leaves Home for Dark Horse and Plain Janes for DC's now defunct Minx line. On this episode, Cecil tells Aaron what it was like to fall in love in the line-up for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace and then write about it in the pages of The Secret Loves of Geeks anthology. The two also chat about why the theme of transformation permeates so much of Cecil's work, why for her the creative process is always political and how she is still able to write in the voice of a teenage girl despite the hindsight of adulthood. On today's episode I talk to Cecil Castellucci. Based in Los Angeles, Cecil is the author of books and graphic novels for young adults including Boy Proof, The Plain Janes, Soupy Leaves Home, The Year of the Beasts, Tin Star, and the Eisner nominated Odd Duck. In 2015, she co-authored Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure, and currently is writing Shade, The Changing Woman (formerly Shade, The Changing Girl), an ongoing comic on Gerard Way’s Young Animal imprint at DC Comics. Cecil's short stories and short comics have been published in Strange Horizons, Tor.com, Womanthology, Star Trek: Waypoint, among others, and she is the Children’s Correspondence Coordinator for The Rumpus, a two-time MacDowell Fellow and the founding YA Editor at the LA Review of Books. Her latest book, Don’t Cosplay With My Heart, is out now! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.

Within a narrow shelter between two huge boulders of a caprock high above the Purgatory River in southeastern Colorado is a Native American equinox site known as The Pathfinder. From a natural chimney above extends a midday sun dagger much longer than America's most famous archaeoastronomical event authored by the Anasazi atop Fajada Butte in Chaco Canyon. Besides the dramatic Colorado dawn alignment and shadow play on a leaf petroglyph (which may, indeed, more accurately depict a vulva), there is an equinox sun ray that pierces a set of petroglyphs. Its inspiration seems to be from the Navajo legend of a slumbering Changing Woman impregnated with twins by a blazing sun beam. In addition, this video traces the discovery of suspected Celtic Ogham rock writing in Colorado and Oklahoma in the late 1970s along with mainstream archaeology's determination to dismiss evidence with biased institutional collusion.
