What is “settler colonialism” and how is it different from other forms of imperialism? In this episode I share excerpts from S.C. Gwynne's bracing, controversial book Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History, and reflect on the historical lines between the American project of removal and Israel's current genocidal campaign in Gaza. How is Zionism related to Manifest Destiny? And what can we learn from each of these tremendously disturbing eras? Welcome to Episode 67 of the Hidden History of Texas – I've been discussing the 1st peoples of Texas, those who were here when the Spanish arrived and today, I'm going to discuss The Comanche, Kiowas, Tonkawas.Remember how I discussed some of the differences between the Hunter-gathers tribes (mostly nomadic lifestyle) and the farming tribes (mostly stationary lifestyle). I brought up some of the religious beliefs and how the majority of tribes embraced the idea of a supreme being or multiple gods, and they had creation stories. For agricultural tribes, various ceremonies accompanied the planting and harvesting of crops. Hunter-gatherers often sought the help of spirits before searching for game, which served as food for the tribe. One of the major tribes of hunter-gatherers was the Comanche. The Comanches started out in the Great Plains and began to migrate south due to pressure from other tribes such as the Blackfeet and Crow. It's important to remember that throughout human history, groups of people have consistently been replace by other groups who were more powerful. Eventually the Comanche ended up in Texas, where there was abundant game, a warm climate, and an animal that would eventually become almost synonymous with them, the wild mustang. The Comanche inhabited most of the South Plains including much of North, Central, and West Texas, this part of Texas was known as Comanche country, or Comanchería. Once they arrived and settled on the Southern Plains the Utes called them Komántcia, which means "enemy," or, literally, "anyone who wants to fight me all the time." However, they called themselves Nermernuh, or "the People." We know of as many as 13 different Comanche groups and most likely there were others that were never identified. Several major bands played important roles in recorded Comanche and Texas history. The southernmost band was called Penateka, or "Honey Eaters" and their range extended from the Edwards Plateau to the headwaters of the Central Texas Rivers. A band named Nokomi or “Those who Turn Back” lived in an area north of the Penateka, they roamed from the Cross Timbers region of North Texas to the mountains of New Mexico. Their range was shared by two smaller bands, the Tanima ("Liver-Eaters") and the Tenawa ("Those Who Stay Downstream") and are often referred to as the Middle Comanches. The Quahadis ("Antelopes"), roamed the high plains of the Llano Estacado. One interesting fact about the Llano Estacado is that the Southern end of the plateau lacks a distinct physical boundary; it blends into the Edwards Plateau, (in Central Texas, where this program is recorded) and the Johnson Creek branch of the Colorado River, east of Big Spring, which is most likely its boundary. The Llano Estacado comprises all or part of thirty-three Texas and four New Mexico counties and covers approximately 32,000 square miles, a larger area than all of New England. It is part of what was known to early explorers and settlers as the Great American Desert, a semiarid region with average annual precipitation of eighteen to twenty inches. The Comanche weren't the only tribe that lived in that area, the Kiowa also shared territory that was mostly in the Panhandle and Oklahoma. The Kiowas originally came from the Montana area around the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers. As they migrated southward, they quickly learned to adapt to the South Plains by acquiring and using horses, especially in their hunting of buffalo. They gained their horses from the Spanish who also supplied them with slaves and guns and over time they became almost a completely nomadic group, and eventually they became one of the most feared and disliked of the Plains tribes. They entered into peaceful co-existence with the Comanche and with help from the Wichitas and Taovaya received guns and ammunition from the French and British. The Kiowa camps were designed to be broken down and moved quickly, often within 30 minutes.
I'm reading S.C. Gwynne's incredible book Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History, and it's making me think about Israel, Gaza, and the fatal arrogance of the leadership class throughout history. A scathing review of Bill Clinton's new book brings that arrogant tendency right up to 2025, as we witness the Democratic Party's inability to conjure a coherent battle plan to confront Trump and company's unbelievably evil intentions. PART 4 “Don't let go of one foot in one place and one foot in the other. Don't ever forget who you are. You are Comanche, you are Indian. You are a Parker.” - Jacquetta Parker, proud great-granddaughter of the legendary Comanche warrior Quanah Parker, sharing his timeless wisdom and guiding his descendants as they navigate the complexities of two very different worlds. In Part 4 of this series, where I visited with the descendants of Quanah Parker, we explored a more personal side of the legendary Comanche leader—Quanah as a father, husband, and historical inspiration. Our conversation uncovered fascinating stories, including: - Despite his reputation as a fierce and respected warrior, Quanah had a deep compassion for orphans and those in need. - The time President Roosevelt visited his home. - The treasured china passed down to one of his great-granddaughters. - Insights into Quanah's many wives. - The remarkable story of how Quanah and the Mennonites envisioned and built Post Oak Mission. - How both Comanche and English were sung and preached in the church. - The role of frybread sales in rebuilding Post Oak Mission. - The secret to making the perfect frybread—at least, according to these particular Comanches. - Clumpy or soft frybread? You decide. (I say we settle this with a bake-off!) Join me as we uncover these incredible stories, bringing Quanah's legacy to life through the voices of his descendants. The Comanche peaked and then fell in the decades between 1840 and 1880. In this episode, we discuss that story arc. From the Comanche retaliation against Texas for the Council House Massacre, through a brief peace with the Texans, drought and declining bison herds, collapsing population, and finally to the back-and-forth relations with the US that culminated in the reservation period. In the middle of this story, Quanah Parker emerges as a great Comanche warrior who would then, in an unexpected pivot, urge assimilation as the last, best hope for his people. For 400 years, the Comanches were unstoppable. They fought against state-backed armies with cutting-edge weapons—and won with bows and arrows. Every officer who tried to defeat them failed. Until one man changed the game completely. And the way he did it? It's the exact strategy you need to win the battle inside your own mind. In this episode of The Freedom Project Podcast, I break down: How one of history's greatest warrior cultures held their ground for centuries. The one mindset shift that finally ended the war. Why fighting yourself only makes your struggles stronger—and what to do instead. If you're tired of battling your own mind, this episode will change how you see everything. Can who you are completely change? History proves that it can. Take Cynthia Ann Parker, a girl kidnapped by the Comanches at 9 years old. Raised among them, she became Comanche herself—so much so that when she was rescued 24 years later, she was devastated. In this episode of The Freedom Project Podcast, I explore: How identity isn't fixed—it's shaped by your environment. Why the people, habits, and ideas around you are rewiring your brain. How to deliberately shape yourself into the person you want to become. If you've ever felt stuck in old patterns, this episode will show you how to break free.

The Comanche entered the southern great plains slowly and imperceptibly, ultimately to find themselves one part of a very restless world. There were imperial tensions between European powers, as well as ancient rivalries and territorial ambitions of powerful native nations. It wasn't exactly a game of thrones, but it was a contest nonetheless. Listen in as Chris and Jason discuss the Comanche's war of annihilation against the Apache, their tumultuous relationship with the Spanish, shrewd alliances with other native nations, and the peace that was engineered in the twilight of Spanish power in North America. Welcome to the Hidden History of Texas. This is Episode 45 – Texas Frontier Forts 1848-1849 - I'm your host and guide Hank Wilson. And as always, brought to you by Ashby Navis and Tennyson Media Publishers, producers of a comprehensive catalog of audiobooks and high-quality games, productivity, and mental health apps. Visit AshbyNavis.com for more information. After and actually during the War with Mexico, the United States began the process of establishing Army posts or forts in Texas. The first of these Fort Polk and Fort Brown had been established during the war against Mexico, almost at the mouth of the Rio Grande and the Gulf of Mexico. In 1849 Maj. Gen. George Mercer Brooke, assumed command of the Military Department for Texas and began working on ensuring that Mexico understood the United States was claiming authority along the southern border of Texas. To do so, he placed Ringgold Barracks, Fort McIntosh, and Fort Duncan along the Rio Grande. After those forts were in place, he then moved to protect the western frontier. In order to accomplish that he established Fort Inge, Fort Lincoln, Fort Martin Scott, Fort Croghan, Fort Gates, Fort Graham, and Fort Worth. In this episode I want to look at 4 of those forts, Fort Martin Scott (December 1848), Fort Inge (March 13, 1849), Fort Croghan (March 16, 1849), and Fort Worth (June 6, 1849). The first of those, Fort Martin Scott, my favorite of all the forts, because my great-great grandfather was actually stationed there and it's how part of my family came into existence in Texas. Located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country just outside of Fredericksburg Texas, is Fort Martin Scott. It was founded on December 5, 1848, when Captain Seth Eastman of the 1st U.S. Infantry, one of the 1st U.S. Army post on the western frontier and named it Camp Houston. This fort served as protection for the mostly German settlers in the area and also helped protect the Fredericksburg – San Antonio Road. Eastman stayed at the camp until February of 1849 when he was sent to establish what was to become Fort Inge. Fort Martin Scott, then Camp Houston, started with 2 companies of infantry and one of dragoons. In 1847 Germans who had settled the area had entered into peace treaties with the Comanches; however, those treaties were in danger as more Anglo settlers moved into the region. The camp was formally renamed to Fort Martin Scott in December of 1849 in memory of Major Martin Scott who was killed in action at the battle of Molina del Rey in 1847. Over time the influx of white settlers led to an increase of tension between the parties and in 1850 several tribes met near the San Saba River. At that time Indian agent John Rollins, with an escort provided by Captain Hamilton W. Merrill met with the tribes and drew up the Fort Martin Scott Treaty. Due to people moving further west Fort Martin Scott began to lose its tactical value and finally in 1853 Colonel W.G. Freeman recommended the fort be closed and in December 1853, the 8th Military Department ordered that it be closed. The preserved fort can be visited and is now the property of the Fredericksburg Heritage Association. Next to come into existence was Fort Inge, located on the east bank of the Leona River south of Uvalde. The area's primary natural identifier is a 140 foot volcanic plug of phonolite basalt. Some archeologists believe the area has been occupied by one group or another since around 6,000 BC. Several ranches also existed in the region during both the Spanish colonial and the Mexican periods of Texas. On March 13, 1849, Captain Seth Eastman along with some 56 soldiers of the 1st United States Infantry established a base camp on the Leona. In December of that year, the post was renamed Fort Inge in honor of Lt. Zebulon Inge, a West Point graduate who served in the U.S. Second Dragoons and had been killed during the Battle of Resaca de la Palma.
In 1892, legendary Army Capt. Joseph Blocker reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief and his family back to their tribal land. Embarking on a harrowing and perilous journey from Fort Berringer, N.M., to the grasslands of Montana, they soon encounter a young widow whose family was killed on the plains. The travelers must now band together to survive a punishing landscape that's crawling with hostile Comanches and vicious outliers. Om Birkebollen, Comanches og Bavianstyret...
"They came to the plains from the west, slipping through the canyon passes of the Sangre de Cristo Range in small, roving bands...They were few in number, possessed little wealth...New Mexico's Spanish officials noted their arrival to the southern grasslands in 1706 and wrote it off as a minor event. Yet by midcentury, the Numunu, then bearing the name Comanches, had unhinged the world they had almost unnoticeably entered"So begins historian Pekka Hamalainen's epic history, The Comanche Empire. They were the continent's greatest horsemen and possibly the most ferocious warriors in history. In the first of several episodes on the Comanches, Chris and Jason trace their origins as hunter gatherers in vast North American wilderness, their migration south, and the fearsome but adaptable culture they forged on their path to dominance of the southern Great Plains. I just finished up Empire of the Summer Moon by SC Gwynne, a book describing the Comanche, the fiercest warrior tribe of the plains. Loved this book!! In this episode, I cover how the horse transformed Comanche from the 98 pound weakling to the strongest, most militaristic tribe of the Southwest. I also describe their diet, their horsemanship and the what made them such compelling warriors. We also discuss a little US Grant, and I offer a travel tip on the Comanches' last redoubt, the Palo Duro Canyon in Northern Texas.
Set in Dodge City, Kansas, in the 1870's, Gunsmoke featured stories centered around the US Marshal Matt Dillon, played by William Conrad. The show was hugely popular and lasted from 1952 to 1962 when it transitioned to TV- and there ran for 17 years. Welcome back for another episode of Nick's Non-fiction with your host Nick Muniz Empire of the Summer Moon spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches. Texas Slim makes a spirited return to broadcasting with his brand-new series, "Yeehaw! Cowboy Talk." This series promises a mix of heartfelt, random musings with a healthy dose of sarcasm and that distinctive West Texas Dirt Road Twang. Slim plans to share tales of his adventures and insights, offering a glimpse into his life, his beginnings, and his clear vision for the future. As someone who's traveled extensively, covering 160k miles across three continents and circling the globe 1.5 times in less than three years, he brings a wealth of experience and stories, especially from his quest for global #BeefIntelligence.Slim is setting the stage for a modern-day, local and global cattle drive, calling on listeners to gear up for some "catastrophic winds" ahead. He hints at exciting, challenging times, urging his audience to embrace integrity and focus, drawing parallels between life's trials and the journey of a professional team roper learning the ropes. Highlighting the foundational spirit of the American Cowboy, Slim shares anecdotes of camaraderie and resilience, from East Texas's distinct accent to the humorous and sometimes perilous cowboy life, including his own air-lifting adventure across the southern Rockies.Announcing a grand vision for a "Worldwide #BeefIntelligence Kingdom Series" dubbed the new International Lifestyle, Slim intertwines his personal adventures with broader themes of market access, spirit, and freedom. He passionately speaks about combating what he sees as threats to children's innocence and the "Harvest of Deception," signaling a bold stance against undisclosed adversaries. With a nod to his roots and the "True Grit" instilled by his West Texas upbringing, Slim is poised to embark on a mission filled with purpose and determination. In addition to his storytelling, Slim plans to share "Slimisms" and his love for West Texas Red Dirt music, giving shoutouts to local talents like Randall King and their shared dirt road heritage.Stay tuned for "Yeehaw! Cowboy Talk" for a blend of tales, insights, and music from the heart of Texas, as told by Texas Slim himself.Transcript: Hey, I miss ya'll….I'm back~At least as far as doing that hippy-punk-cowboy kinda talkin….dang do I have some stories to share. This new series that I am calling “Yeehaw - Hippy-punk-cowboy talk” is going to be random, it's going to come from the heart, and it will have some sarcasm and a little West Texas Dirt Road Twang to it. I've been to a few places and I've done a few things throughout my lifetime and now it's time to give you some perspective of who this ole boy is, the vision I had in the beginning and the very clear vision I currently have. And we're all going to move forward together….time to step up and focus in on the true art of story tellin.I'll tell ya one thing, it's time to pull the trigger folks! A train wreck is coming but don't go frettin…we built out a new rail system and the rail transition is ready to go. We've tested and have the results to prove it.I'll be tellin' ya'll stories of my life, which started out by me looking up at the sky. I come from the “Llano Estacado,” the “Dessert High Plains” a place that is referred to as the “Caprock” and the land of the Comanches, “Comancheria”. THE Texas Panhandle! THE World Headquarters of the Beef Initiative and the I Am Texas Slim Foundation. And boy howdy has it been one hell of a ride. 160k miles driven, 3 continents explored, 1.5 trips around the globe all on the quest for the most fascinating journey and exploration of global #BeefIntelligence the the world has ever had….and all that done in less than 3 years….you should hear about the prior 40 before that…Oh, and btw it's just getting started so, let's all pay attention and get a new “Yeehaw” swagger that is ready to scream across the world. We are about to start the next local and global modern-day cattle drive and every one of you is a hired hand and it's time to pull yourselves up by your bootstraps and saddle up.We have got some catastrophic winds coming our way and I am going to do my best to communicate what I see and how the next two years are going to play out from my perspective. Since I just hired ya'll on, I'm going to tell you what your job is and what tasks you are going to have moving forward. If we do a good job I'll be throwing a big ole International Cattleman's Feast and it will be on me. I'll just ask that you start living with integrity, and with a new focus. It takes a little practice at first but you'll get the hang of it. Kinda like how ole Cole Bolton became a professional team roper. One miss at a time. He always saddles back up, he and his roping partner take a deep breath, and as a team, they go get the job done one calf at a time. Cole don't talk much about his skills, but he has many at his disposal.Folks, the Beef Initiative was started with a foundational spirit that is extremely rare and extremely sought after, it's the spirit of the great American Cowboy.See, I am punchy as hell, I'm from West Texas…Ole Cole, he's from East Texas, I think he talks funny.Anyways, back to the cowboy spirit I was referring to. There are so many cowboys that behave and talk funny in so many ways. Ole Jason Wrich, a stern talker he is!I can't wait to get back on the stage with Jason at the 2nd Colorado Beef Initiative Summit…His Colorado Cowboy slur kinda straightens your posture up for you. You need to come try it. He'll put your butt at attention!See cowboys do a lot of hard, difficult, funny, and stupid things. Did I ever tell you the time I got airlifted across the southern Rockies? Hell, come to find out I was in a chopper, not a Cessna. I could have swore I was a glidin, not choppin… that morphine was strong, I‘ll give it that much…To be clear. We're all tough as shit. Kinda overly hard-headed, soft at the right times but most of all we are the ones you want to be looking at and listening to. So, I am going to throw in some “Yippe-Ki Yay” and we are going to start a big ole production here.I'm going to use ya'll as my dress rehearsal to start broadcasting a Worldwide #BeefIntelligence Kingdom Series I call the new International L...
This week Brian DeLay drops in to share a milkshake about There Will Be Blood and the performance of Daniel Day-Lewis. We explore the complexity of the protagonist, Daniel Plainview, and his lack of change throughout the film as well as the historical context of oil barons and the era of titans in American history. The conversation delves into the relationship between Plainview and capitalism, highlighting his refusal to let the big guys win, even at the cost of his own success. The conversation touches on the violent ending, the absence of Native peoples in the narrative, and Brian DeLay's work on the West including the differences between writing for trade presses and academic presses. Brian is a titan in the field so I hope you enjoy this conversationAbout our guest:Brian DeLay is a scholar of 18th- and 19th-century North America, specializing in transnational, borderlands, and Native American histories. Most of his writing explores connections between U.S., Latin American, and Indigenous histories in order to better understand power and inequality in the Western Hemisphere. His first book, War of a Thousand Deserts: Indian Raids and the U.S.-Mexican Warrecovers the forgotten, transnational story of how Comanches, Kiowas, Apaches, Navajos and other Indigenous peoples shaped the transformative era of the U.S.-Mexican War. He is now working on three interconnected projects about the history of the international arms trade. The first is a book called Aim at Empire: American Revolutions through the Barrel of a Gun, 1750-1825. The book explains how the international arms trade made anticolonial rebellion a practical possibility in British North America; how arms dealers from the newly-independent United States equipped the Haitian Revolution and the Spanish American Wars for Independence; and how privileged control over war material empowered U.S. empire in the trans-Appalachian West. Aim at Empire will be published by W.W. Norton in 2024. The second project is another book under contract with W.W. Norton: Means of Destruction: Guns, Freedom, and Domination in the Americas before World War II.

Pressed on all sides by European and native rivals, the Lipanes never should have survived into the nineteenth century. Yet not only had they survived, they had done so with their numbers and their range undiminished. They were wealthier than ever, and more powerful too, and would play a vital role in driving the Spanish out of Texas for good.www.BrandonSeale.com
Contrary to popular usage, an “Apocalypse” isn't an ending. In Greek it means an “unveiling," an "uncovering," a “revelation.” But what have we really revealed about the most powerful, most unconquerable, most exceptional people in Texas history? www.BrandonSeale.com
The United States dispenses with the pretense of Native American sovereignty and adopts a policy of forced assimilation. Mexico waxes poetic about the “cosmic race” while sending airplanes to track down "Apaches broncos” living free in the mountains. The Lipan Apaches avoid the reservation by dispersing and using the reservation system to project their power and spread their religious ceremonies to the native communities of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Chihuahua, and Coahuila.www.BrandonSeale.com
All pretense of accommodation with Native Americans disappears in the 1870's. Lipanes are pursued equally and openly by American and Mexican forces on both sides of the border. One-by-one, they see their old native rivals picked off and carted off to reservations. But the Lipan Apaches refuse to play the doomed savage. After a brutal massacre by US Army troops at their sacred El Remolino site, they declare “war with the whole world.”www.BrandonSeale.com
The Lipan Apaches become proxies for a Texian guerilla war against northern Mexico, until Texian policies cut them off from their lands and their livelihoods. Ever adaptable, the Lipanes flip the script, relocating to their old haunts in Mexico and raiding Texas property. The Texas-Mexico border itself – and the freedom it offers – becomes an artifact of enduring Lipan resistance during these years. The annexation of Texas, however, unbalances the playing field in an oddly legalistic way.www.BrandonSeale.com
No Native Texan captured Anglo-Texians' hearts like Lipan Captain Flacco the Younger. His exploits as a Texas Ranger and his people's defense of Texas' borders against Mexico make him the darling of Texas newspapers. Texas newspapers fail to distinguish, however, between hostile native Texans and Lipanes living in their midst. And Lipan wealth becomes an irresistible target of Texian raiding and retaliation. Painting of Flacco the Younger by Jay Hester, available online.www.BrandonSeale.com
In the turmoil of the War for Mexican independence, Lipan Captain Cuelgas de Castro emerges as a beacon of stability in Texas. Perhaps no one saw the Texas geopolitical checkerboard better at this moment. Captain Cuelgas de Castro wins for his people recognition by the new Emperor of Mexico. But it won't be enough to secure true sovereignty for his people.www.BrandonSeale.com
Following the great peace of 1749, San Antonio becomes the great outlet for native North American trade and for the mediation of Native Texas culture into Spanish society. In turn, Texas Apaches commit to a symbiotic existence with the settler communities around them, and come to take on a distinct identity as “Lipan” Apaches – the "People of the In-Between." www.BrandonSeale.com
Spanish army officers prove reluctant to change their mindset, however, even as the Lipan alliance under the great Captain Picax-Andé brings to a definitive halt the advance of Spanish conquest. www.BrandonSeale.com
In the course of a single generation, Spanish policy toward Lipan Apaches shifts from alliance to extermination. But a generation of alliance-making by Lipan Captain Bigotes makes the Lipan alliance more powerful than ever. They beat back the Comanches to the Red River and the Spanish to a line of presidios that still cuts across the North American continent like a scar as the US-Mexico border.www.BrandonSeale.com
A new Spanish outpost on the San Antonio River represents an opportunity and a threat to the Apaches' Texas plains trade. The great empires test each other with equal turns generosity and violence. And a new rival appears on the Texas Plains.www.BrandonSeale.com
Thanks to the horse, Plains Apaches expand their influence over an increasingly broad swath of the Great Plains and Northern Mexico. In the course of one remarkable generation, they drive the Spanish out of New Mexico and absorb their old Jumano rivals, despite an epic last-ditch effort by Jumano Captain Juan Sabeata to frustrate them. www.BrandonSeale.com
Proto-Apaches, Jumanos, and Puebloans vie for control of the Texas Plains in the face of Spanish entradas, epidemics, and slaving expeditions. www.BrandonSeale.com
Killer-of-Enemies teaches the proto-Apaches, the “Nde,” how to treat with the peoples they meet as they descend into the Texas panhandle: the Puebloans to the west, the Jumanos to the South, and the Caddoan-speakers to the east. Yet the arrival of yet another newcomer – this one from across the ocean – challenges the diplomatic skills of even the most effective Nde alliance-makers.www.BrandonSeale.com
Despite centuries of conflict with Spanish, Mexican, Texan, United States, and native rivals, the Lipan Apaches managed to do what perhaps no other native community in the United States has been able to: carve for themselves a place in their ancestral homeland without surrendering it. Join us this season on “Lipan Apocalypse” as we pull back the veil on the Lipanes in our midst and their outsized legacy on modern Texas. www.BrandonSeale.com
Happy New Year's Everyone. This is always a fun episode because we announce the results of our silly, agricultural survey, Autumm and Hattie come on the show and we give away prizes. This year's episode was recorded remotely in Texas! We are in the midst of an epic trip exploring Texas history, the Southern Border and a watering point on the Goodnight/Loving Trail. Enjoy the photos! Thank you all for another great year! We could not do this without you, and we will be forever grateful.
If there was anything more improbable in Texas history than the alliance orchestrated by José Francisco Ruíz between Lipan Apaches and Comanches in 1816, it was the peace brokered WITH the Lipanes and Comanches on behalf of the newly-independent Mexican empire in 1822. It would culminate in one of the most memorable scenes in Texas history, the journey of Ruíz and a handful of Lipan and Comanche chiefs to the halls of Monteczuma for a three-way peace that Texas would never truly be able to enjoy... Sam and Emma host Gerald Horne, Professor of History and African American Studies at the University of Houston, to discuss his recent book The Counter-Revolution of 1836: Texas Slavery & Jim Crow and the Roots of U.S. Fascism. Then later in the show, they're joined by Camille Gix, member of the Initiative I-135 steering committee at House Our Neighbors, the political committee for Real Change, to discuss I-135, the housing initiative coming before Seattle voters until Tuesday February 14th. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the climbing death toll from last week's earthquake in Syria and Turkey, Turkey's response to contracting failures, the DOJ's lawsuit to halt a Jet Blue-Spirit merger, the IRS' dramatic service approvement, Israel expanding their West Bank settlements, and Matt Schlapp's response to being outed as a sexual harasser, before parsing through updates on the disaster chemical spill in East Palestine, Ohio, and the environmental catastrophe cover-up that is beginning to trickle out. Professor Gerald Horne then joins as he dives right into his work taking on the pre-foundational, foundational, and developmental myths of the United States, focusing on his analysis of the Texas revolution as a “counter-revolution,” seeking to expand institutions that promote a dearth of progress (indigenous dispossession, the transatlantic slave trade) rather than reinventing their institutions in favor of progress. Continuing his analysis of the Texas revolution, Professor Horne walks through the Texan elite and their push against the “Mexican Tyranny” of emancipation, then capitalizing on the success of their revolution by launching a period of mass bloodshed as they violently dispossessed the Comanches to expand their territories and plantations. Shifting away from Texas, Horne, Sam, and Emma explore the role of America and Mexico in challenging and supporting, respectively, Texas' role in the transatlantic slave trade, with Andrew Jackson using the Trail of Tears to force indigenous people into Texas' surrounding areas while Texas attempted to ally with now French-Occupied Mexico to stay off pressure from the US, lasting through to the Juneteenth arrival of Black Soldiers in Galveston to not only implement Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation but to put an end to the France-Texas alliance. Continuing forward through the turn of the century, Gerald walks through the lasting impact of this era of Texas history in the rebirth of the Klu Klux Klan, before stepping back to analyze the importance of the greater historical context behind this revolution, and how to unite macro and micro lenses of history. Camille Gix then joins to walk through Seattle's I-135 initiative, what “Social Housing” implies, and why this model can bolster the reclamation of housing from the financial world to the public realm. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Republicans talk around cuts to Social Security, assess the importance of raising the cap, analyze the connection between Chinese Spy Balloons and the UFOs invading US airspace this weekend, and discuss the rise and fall of 21st Century renaissance-man James O'Keef. Nova from Minnesota dives into the importance of fighting for SSDI, Owen from San Marcus talks about the reach of Matt Walsh and the issues of the computer science workforce, and Rosanne takes a note from the Babylon Bee for her newest stand-up set. They also discuss the Super Bowl, and the immediate aggrievement that the right found in it (Race War anyone?), plus, your calls and IMs!
