Send us a textLynn's Chicago Pizza began with Lynn Humphrey and Brandon Bruner, Sr. trying to solve a problem. They couldn't get pizza delivered to their Southside Chicago neighborhood so Brandon, a trained chef, began experimenting with making a Chicago Deep Dish pizza. Soon, they started making pizza for friends and family. The two started selling pizza at a nearby bar and the virtual pizzeria was born doing popups. They ventured into a brick-and-mortar restaurant partnership but soon realized that they wanted to create their own vision in their Woodlawn neighborhood that was in need of restaurant options. Landing the location that the two had their eye on came with an application process. After great strides, Lynn's Chicago Pizza opened serving up deep dish and Chicago thin crust pizza. Lynn and Brandon opened more than a pizzeria. Lynn's serves as a community hub with events and special nights for people to gather. Their efforts have drawn local and national attention. Brandon and Lynn share how they've built momentum for their young business. How A Former Microsoft Exec Mastered The Perfect Slice—Using Science Who doesn't love pizza? It's a magical combination of sauce, cheese, crust, and maybe even a topping or two. Depending on where you eat it, the ratio of sauce and cheese and toppings changes: Neapolitan, NY Style, and Chicago Deep Dish each have a slightly different recipe. And different methods of baking impart their signature flavor on the end result—whether that's coal, wood, or gas-fired ovens. Nearly every country in the world has some type of variation on the classic. Author Nathan Myhrvold visited over 250 pizzerias all over the world to appreciate their differences. Then he made over 12,000 pizzas, using physics and chemistry to tweak each one slightly. Myhrvold and his co-author, chef Francisco Migoya wrote all about the gourmand experiment in a three-volume, 35-pound set of beautifully illustrated and painstakingly researched books. Ira talks with Nathan Myhrvold, former CTO at Microsoft, founder of Intellectual Ventures and Modernist Cuisine about his discoveries and his most recent book, Modernist Pizza. E.O. Wilson's Indelible Mark On Ecology Ecologist and ant biologist Edward O. Wilson (often called E. O. Wilson) died December 26, at the age of 92. Though he was known for his study of ants and their social behavior, his impact extended much further—from sociobiology, the study of the influence of genetics on behavior, to the way science was taught and understood. His writing twice won the Pulitzer Prize. Wilson appeared on Science Friday many times. In this short remembrance of Wilson, Ira replays selections from past conversations with the scientist, recorded between 2006 and 2013. The Fossil—And Family—Records Of Richard Leakey Paleoanthropologist Richard Leakey died on January 2 at the age of 77. The Kenyan conservationist and fossil hunter was the son of paleoanthropologists Louis and Mary Leakey, who helped redefine the early parts of the human family tree. Richard was part of the team that discovered ‘Turkana Boy,' a Homo erectus skeleton—one of the most complete early hominin skeletons ever found. In later years, he was the director of the National Museum of Kenya, the head of the Kenya Wildlife Service, helped found a political party, and led the Kenyan Civil Service in the midst of an anti-corruption campaign. In this edited interview from 2011, Leakey describes his work in the field, his famous fossil-hunting lineage, and his desire to convince skeptics of the reality of human evolution.

Hello Metalworking Nation! Today we are excited to bring you another story that we hope will equip and inspire the younger generation of manufacturing leaders. Flying all the way in from Washington State, we are joined by Paul Van Metre, Co-Founder and VP Marketing of Adion Systems, an ERP-based software solutions company. Paul shares with us his success story of co-founding a machine shop with his friends right out of college. With little money at first, they were able to grow the business to an $11 million dollar company during the tech boom of the late 90's, by being ahead of the curve and utilizing several key processes including lean manufacturing and SEO. Eventually this led to the development of a web based and completely comprehensive ERP system that would take Paul and the company in a different direction. Earlier on in the episode we'll get to hear Jim and Jason's debate on authentic Chicago Deep Dish, and in manufacturing news, we'll discuss Rhode Island's Governor calling for new focus on manufacturing jobs. Episode Structure: [01:12] - Chuck Rigali with Alro Steel [03:12] - Manufacturing News [08:18] - Welcome Paul Van Metre [10:40] - Vehicle Research Institute [14:06] - Starting a Machine Shop [17:55] - Writing the First Paychecks [19:32] - Kaizen Newspapers [23:05] - Free Food and Other Perks [24:31] - Fully Digital Operation [26:53] - Moving Away From Old Processes [28:15] - Developing Software [30:23] - Starting a New Company [32:40] - Knowing Where We Came From [34:30] - Conclusion of Episode Mentioned in this Episode: Manufacturing News Paul Van Metre | LinkedIn We Want to Hear From YOU, The Metalworking Nation: • Jim@makingchips.com • Jason@makingchips.com • Ryan@makingchips.com Telephone: (312) 725-0245
This week Dave and Sam welcome back Spilly as they try to understand the disaster that was the Hall of Fame Game and Joey Bosa's holdout as well as Roger Goodell's 10 year commissioner anniversary and the Broncos QB battle. Plus, near murder over food opinions. Chicago Deep Dish isn't pizza, Sam, fight me. Title music from Bensound.com
Two things we are famous for in Chicago is House music and deep dish pizza. Chicago house is more traditional sound that evolved from disco and soul music. Chicago Deep dish pizza is actually assembled 'upside-down' from their usual order on a pizza. The crust is covered with cheese (generally sliced mozzarella), followed by various meat options such as pepperoni or sausage, the latter of which is sometimes in a solid patty-like layer. Other toppings such as onions, mushrooms and bell peppers are then also used. An uncooked sauce, typically made from crushed canned tomatoes, is added as the finishing layer. It is typical that when ordered for carry-out or delivery, the pizza is uncut, as this prevents the oils from soaking into the crust, causing the pie to become soggy. Chicago deep house is a name given to a sub-genre of house music coined in the mid- to late 1980s.The rationale behind "Deep" meaning that the more obscure the song, the "deeper" the DJ had to dig into his/her record collection to find that particular song. "Deep House" were tracks that were not played on any of the radio stations house mixes in Chicago and you only heard these "Deep House" tracks in the clubs. There were also a lot of 'house' tracks that were played exclusively in Chicago only and the only way one could hear those tracks was to be in Chicago at anyone of those clubs. Also, DJ's such as Ron Hardy or Frankie Knuckles could re-edit a track to make it deeper than the original. For example, when Ron Hardy did the re-edit for Nightlife's Unlimited, "Peaches & Prune" that track (the re-edit) became a "Deep House" Chicago style house track. You only heard Ron Hardy's version at the Muzic Box and you could not hear or find the re-edit outside of Chicago during those times. So just like I have have a taste and connection to Chicago Deep Dish pizza I also have a strong taste and connection to Deep House music. So I decided to cook up a bit to share with you my friends. Peace and love. 1. Bluebottle - Nachhtbraker 2. Friends - Seven Davis Jr. 3. It’s You (Mousse T.’s Teef Vocal Remix) -FCL 4. Time To Get Physical (Sonny Fodera Remix) - Nice7 5. Baseball Fury (Original Mix) - Ryan Padley 6. Let’s Dance (Agev Munsen Remix) - Tom Flynn 7. Obsessed - HNQO, Dake, Rai Knight 8. The Announcement (Original Mix) -Rudo Deep 9. HigH - Tigerskin
