Last week, the Chicago Sun-Times lost 20% of its workforce, as public media faces funding threats from Washington. So what's ahead for one of the largest non-profit media companies in the country? Reset sits down with Melissa Bell, CEO of Chicago Public Media, to learn how this will affect what readers and listeners can expect from CPM's newsrooms. For a full archive of Reset interviews, head over to wbez.org/reset.
Sun-Times City Hall reporter Fran Spielman sits down with Chicago Public Media CEO Melissa Bell, who shares her path from San Diego roots to media leadership. Inspired by her father's news devotion and transformed by the events of 9/11, Bell recounts her shift from law to journalism, including co-founding Vox Media.Bell tackles journalism's modern challenges with refreshing candor—addressing misinformation, eroding trust, and the blurring lines between business and editorial. Her vision for the Chicago Sun-Times and WBEZ isn't just strategic; it's a commitment to community-centered journalism when audiences need it most.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In September 2023, E&P reported on the Arizona Newspapers Association and the Arizona Broadcasters Association merger. In the past year, there have been several legacy newspaper and public media mergers, such as Chicago Public Media's acquisition of the Chicago Sun-Times, The Steinman's "gifting" of their 150+-year-old Lancaster, PA newspaper to the local public broadcasting outlet and the Denton (TX) Record-Chronicle becoming part of Dallas-Fort Worth's KERA Public Broadcasting operations. Many news media pundits predict that, in the very near future, we will see more broadcasting and newspaper newsrooms working as one to compete for larger audiences and achieve new economies of scale to achieve sustainable business models. For this reason, E&P sought insights from the Radio Television Digital News Association's CEO & President Dan Shelley on how the RTDNA is helping journalism survive in today's complex local news media ecosystem. Topics discussed in this episode of "E&P Reports" include the fight for cameras (and microphones) in courtrooms. Should the news media industry police itself in defining who is a journalist? We also explore the growth of citizen journalism, its impact on local news media outlets and more. Dan Shelley is president and CEO of the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) and president of the RTDNA Foundation. Previously, Dan was senior vice president of digital content strategy for iHeartMedia, senior vice president at Interactive One (part of Radio One), director of digital media at WCBS-TV, New York and an executive producer for WCBS-TV News.
On January 31, 2022, some would say industry history was made when Chicago Public Media, owners of the PBS affiliate WBEZ announced the acquisition of the iconic, daily tabloid: The Chicago Sun-Times. Chicago Public Media raised $61 million in multiyear philanthropic commitments for the acquisition and then transitioned the publication to nonprofit ownership. At the time of the announcement the New York Times reported that the merger of: “The hard-hitting tone of tabloid journalism and the measured voice of public radio make for an unlikely combination.” Tim Franklin, senior associate dean of Northwestern University's Medill journalism school and the former president of the Poynter Institute stated: “It's kind of hard to overstate how profound this development is. I think in some ways it could be a model for the nation.” Just a few months later, more industry “history” was made with the announcement of the hiring of Jennifer Kho, former managing editor of HuffPost and Guardian US, as the paper's executive editor. Kho was the first woman and the first person of color to lead its newsroom. Since Kho's appointment, there have been many changes at the paper, that include the dropping of their paywall for access to all digital content. A “right to be forgotten” policy, that allows people who have been reported on to seek a review and possibly have stories removed from internet searches. And the addition of twelve Sun-Times' “Next Voices,” who are guest columnists that were selected from reader submitted entries. In this episode of E&P Reports, we check in with Chicago Public Media, owners of PBS affiliate WBEZ, to find out how their 2022 acquisition of the 149-year-old Chicago Sun-Times is going. Appearing on the program are Jennifer Kho, executive editor for the newspaper and Tracy Brown, chief content officer for the parent company, who discuss their new initiatives, collaborative efforts and how the blending of these two major market brands is working to expand their audience.
In what ways is democracy under threat in the United States? And how do we strengthen our union? Those are two of the key questions posed in a new series of reports, editorials, podcasts and radio segments from WBEZ and the Sun-Times called “The Democracy Solutions Project,” which will run through the 2024 presidential election. The project is a partnership between Chicago Public Media and the University of Chicago's Center for Effective Government at the Harris School of Public Policy. Reset sits down Eric Liu of Citizen University to hear more about the role civic engagement can play in strengthening democracy.

Since the success of the Civil Rights Movement with the Voting Rights Act, the Fair Housing Act and the War on Poverty program, politics in America and in a number of other countries has been moving farther and farther to the right. We'll examine why and how. Did you know that the US is completing construction of a $100 million drone base in Agadez, Niger? If so, do you know why? Does an in-depth look at a reporter covering the crisis in Nicaragua reveal a startling trend? Are news outlets trying to influence regime change through their on-the-ground coverage? According to Max Blumenthal, co-founder of the Grayzone Project, "The Guardian, The Washington Post, the BBC and NPR have assigned an American anthropologist with no previous journalistic experience to cover the crisis in Nicaragua. The novice reporter, named Carl David Goette-Luciak, has published pieces littered with falsehoods that reinforce the opposition's narrative promoting regime change while relying almost entirely on anti-Sandinista sources." We'll take a look at Goette-Luciak's past and present and analyze the damage. In his most recent MintPress News piece, "The Dow of Inequality: Counting the Casualties of America's Class War," Jon Jetter states, "The neoliberal approach to handling a dire economic downturn may soon produce a political crisis, reminiscent of the debt crisis that led to Hitler's rise 80 years ago. The political class seems to be taking note: the stark inequality reflected in the soaring stock market and shrinking paychecks is unsustainable." We'll discuss his analysis and see how it's playing out in US politics. It's been seven years since NATO overthrew Gaddafi in Libya. Journalist Whitney Webb argues, "The current situation in Libya and the GNA's recent plea should serve as a cautionary tale regarding the inefficacy of NATO-backed and UN-backed regime-change operations, which have left nothing but chaos and failed states in their wake." What are the lessons going forward?GUESTS: Max Blumenthal — Co-founder of the Grayzone Project.Jon Jetter - Author and two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist with more than 20 years of journalistic experience. As PleasureTown transformed into a budding settlement, the community began to see a flood of diverse immigrants. With all the activity, it didn’t take long for the media to catch wind of the diamond in the red dirt, and so a reporter from New York City ventured out West to immerse himself among the eccentrics of the budding community. While he is no stranger to experimental townships -- such as the likes of Oneida and the Harmony Society -- he recognizes in PleasureTown a unique charm. We also meet the town’s resident doctor and hear of his peculiar origins as well as the surprising secret he harbors within.
