Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera, who will be performing as Olha in The Christmas Spider on January 6, 2024 at St. John's Cathedral. Tickets and information at https://www.marblecityopera.com/ Children's tickets are free with the discount code PENNYARTS. Kathryn stopped by the final Einstein Simplified improv show of the year. At the show, someone in the balcony dropped their vape device on Frank's wife Jere. Frank performed in a game in which the other improviser could only read lines from an audience member's text messages. One time when Frank was reading the texts, the girlfriend of the phone's owner stormed out. Frank felt bad about breaking up the couple but Kathryn's perspective is that Frank saved the girl from a bad relationship. Kathryn performed in The Christmas Spider in Baton Rouge in December. There will be two performances in Knoxville on January 6, 2024. Each performance will feature different children in the lead roles. The first show is at 2:30 p.m. and the other is at 5:00 p.m. Kathryn's aunt gave her a gift that was in an empty box of chocolates. It was a small painting of Kathryn's dog. She once bought an empty gift box that was decorated to look like it contained an earwax candle. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Buy books and other merchandise autographed by Body Farm founder Dr. Bill Bass at https://bonezones.com/ including Body Farm t-shirts. Contact BoneZones to hire Frank to give a presentation about Dr. Bass and the Body Farm. Frank upset his wife when he left his phone upstairs. One time she had a flat tire but didn't leave him a voicemail. She kept calling back until he answered. Another time he yelled at Siri to answer. Kathryn suggests that he wear his AirPods all day. Another time when Jere couldn't reach Frank, she asked their next-door neighbor to check on him. Frank has tried using the Google AI program called Bard to help him write a letter of recommendation. He also tried asking it to write a theme song for the Frank & Friends Show. When Frank turned on his work computer, it was open to a Bing browser showing Christmas gift ideas. It appears to have done that by itself. The new season of Tennessee Scholars' Bowl begins airing on January 8, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. on East Tennessee PBS. We are back with another year of Christmas movies to add to our collection. Alyssa hates children, Hannah loves filthy animals, and confusion is had in Toyland. We also escape the wrath of the Christmas Spider and live to see another year of ranking.
Long ago in a faraway place there lived two mothers. One, a humble peasant woman who struggled daily to provide for her children. And the other, a mother spider who also worked hard to care for her family. And although it would appear they were as different as night and day, these two mothers had more in common than would first seem. As the only holiday gift she can give her children, one cold Christmas Eve the peasant woman goes to the forest to get a tree, never noticing that someone has made a home among its branches. During the night, the mother spider spins webs decorating the tree, resulting in a Christmas that neither mother will ever forget. Based on an old Ukrainian story, Trinka Hakes Noble crafts an original heartwarming tale of the grace that can be found in the true spirit of Christmas. This books is available on Amazon. For the past three years, Jackson, Mississippi has been looking for solutions to urban heat islands — places in the city where temperatures are higher because buildings and roads absorb heat. Data shows the hottest areas in Jackson are usually near neighborhoods that have been historically discriminated against. The Gulf States Newsroom's Danny McArthur visited one green infrastructure project designed to cool an iconic part of the city. “The Christmas Spider,” a new holiday operatic work based on a Ukrainian Christmastime folktale, will premiere at Opera Louisiane this weekend. Kathryn Frady, general director, CEO and the company's leading soprano, and John de los Santos, librettist and the production's stage director, tell us more about dramatizing an old folk story for the stage. A 1997 film about the life of a New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian chief is lost no more, after producers stumbled across an old DVD copy of it years after it went missing during Hurricane Katrina. The documentary, “Testimony of a Big Chief,” tells the story of the late Allison “Tootie” Montana, who led the Yellow Pocahontas Black Masking Indians for 50 years. Director Will Horton, who is also an adjunct professor at Loyola University's College of Music and Media,is celebrating the film's recovery with a screening at Loyola this Thursday. Horton will be joined in conversation by the film's producers, Tootie's longtime friends and even his son, Darryl Montana. Horton and Montana join us for more on the making of the film and why the story endures. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Adam Vos. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. Frank asks Kathryn if we are still in the “off-season” for opera companies. Frank's wife Jere asked him to donate some of her old clothes to the Ladies of Charity Thrift Store on Baxter Avenue (https://www.ladiesofcharityknox.org/). While he was there, he picked up fifteen neckties to wear while hosting Tennessee Scholars' Bowl on East Tennessee PBS or when emceeing an event. At his last teeth cleaning, Frank found out that his dentist was not in his new insurance network and he had to pay the full rate for a cleaning and x-rays. When he called to make an appointment with a new dentist, he was offered an appointment at 2:30 p.m., which is the best dad joke ever. Frank's wife joked that he would search for an attractive blonde dentist, based on his choice of dermatologist. Kathryn is thinking of dying her hair blonde again. In 2018, she went from bleach blonde to black hair in order to sing Tosca with the Helena Symphony. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Buy books and other merchandise autographed by Body Farm founder Dr. Bill Bass at https://bonezones.com/ including Body Farm t-shirts. Marble City Opera used to schedule one mainstage performance in the Fall, one in the Winter, and one in the Spring but this season's shows will be The Christmas Spider on January 6, 2024; The Doctor and the Devils on June 6 and 8, 2024; and Puccini's Il Tabarro on a party barge on June 20, 2024. Season tickets are on sale now at https://www.marblecityopera.com/events/seasonticket Frank and Jere were walking from a parking garage to a birthday party for Alex and Jenny Stokes in a downtown bar. Frank tried to swallow an Aleve gel-cap without water but it began dissolving in his mouth. Frank recalls that he knew some ballet dancers who used to pop the capsules and rub the gel on their toes. Kathryn is headed back to Baton Rouge. She is concerned about recent wildfires and the possibility of hurricanes in Louisiana. Frank recalls that the owners of Little Nicky's New York Pizza in Solway lost their Florida restaurant in a hurricane. Kathryn and her husband James once got stuck in a Florida hurricane. Frank went to a reception after Mass at which representatives of the various ministries recruit new members. Frank was speaking with the members of the Haiti Outreach Program because he will emcee their annual fundraising dinner on September 22, 2023. Admission is free but you are asked to RSVP at https://haitioutreachprogram.org/ Frank was recognized by a member of the group that holds an annual fishing trip called the Fly Fishers of Men Retreat. The man asked if Frank was the host of Tennessee Scholars Bowl. Frank returned the favor by recognizing the man as the guy who saved the day when a teenager's hair caught fire at the Easter Vigil in 2022 as described in episode 0043, “Hair on Fire” https://youtu.be/m4hsynpCJGM Kathryn offers to sing a special aria when we finally surpass 1,000 subscribers on YouTube. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. Kathryn says she is 5' 4”. Frank asks if her family measured the children's height on a door or wall. Frank's daughter saved a door jamb with her sons' heights when their family moved to a larger house. Pool owners often have to deal with dead critters in the pool. Sometimes the animals can be rescued in time. Frank saved a bat from drowning in the pool. It clung to the fence all day while it rested and dried off. Frank's wife Jere cooked steaks on the grill on Father's Day. Frank taught his kids to sing the Father's Day song that Groucho Marx used to sing. They changed the lyrics slightly to say they were giving him a box of frozen meat instead of a necktie. Kathryn sent her father a fresh cheesecake via a restaurant delivery service. For example, it moves his church to the top of the list on Sundays. Frank also noticed that Google Docs asks if he wants to open a specific document that he often opens around a certain time of day. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. Kathryn posted on social media that she was going to start drinking coffee and Frank suggested some roasts but Kathryn changed her mind. Frank cut an orange lily to put in a vase for the show. The flowers remind him of his birthday because the lilies at his childhood home in New York would bloom in mid-June. In Tennessee, they bloom a month earlier. Kathryn has been in Baton Rouge, Huntsville, and Pittsburgh. The Opera America conference was in Pittsburgh this year. The opening reception was on a boat. Kathryn's husband James had to wait in the standby line because he hadn't pre-registered for the cruise on the app for the conference. For Marble City Opera's next season, Kathryn is planning a production of Puccini's Il Tabarro on a party barge on June 22, 2024; The Christmas Spider on January 6, 2024; and The Doctor and the Devils on June 6, 2024. A concert called Stalactites, Sopranos, & Stilettos at Cherokee Caverns will be on August 19, 2023. You can also get several of Sam Venable's books, signed by the author and the new book by former UT counsel Ron Leadbetter. Frank had trouble hearing his wife Jere in a noisy environment. However when she sings to him, he hears her loud and clear. While watching the recent coronation on TV, Jere sang along as the church choir sang “Zadok the Priest.” Jere received a gift of stainless steel chopsticks. The package is entirely written in Chinese. Frank used the Google Translate app on his phone to learn what it said. There was a warning to not put it in the “Huiboyi.” Frank was glad that a nonjudgmental plumber who unclogged his bathroom sink. Frank thinks that the glob of material that came out was congealed hair gel. Jere received two large coffee mugs that say Volvo. Frank wants to give them to his sister, who has two Volvo cars but doesn't want to pay the postage to mail them to New York. Kathryn promises to give the mugs to Frank's sister if he were to die and his sister were to attend the funeral.
