Here are some of the highlights:Before implementing the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), they had too many distractions from various marketing campaigns, trade shows, and random ideas that ate up their bandwidth and resulted in unfocused leaders, staff, and reduced quality of support and results. They chose EOS as a framework to align their strategic plans with their goals, and after testing it with one location, they convinced 7-8 owners to roll it out, and found that it helped to streamline their processes and improve their grasp of metrics, focus, clarity, and productivity. EOS helped to eliminate shared accountability, place accountability on the right place in the business, and create confidence in franchise owners in their subordinates Kyle Barr is the Vice President of Franchise Operations for Storm Guard Roofing and Construction. Matt Sheppard is the Chief Operating Officer of The Hummus & Pita Co., a fast-casual Mediterranean concept geared toward national expansion. Before stepping into this current position, Sheppard held multiple senior leadership roles at McAlister’s Deli, including Vice President of Operations for Franchise Operations and Senior Director of Company Operations. Key Takeaways: [0:27] Today’s episode is brought to you by Franchise 5! The key to long-term success is through smart, strategic growth. To learn more about this program, head over to FranchiseEuphoria.com/Franchise5. [0:58] Our episode today features Matt Sheppard, the COO of The Hummus and Pita Co. Matt leads the company’s franchising efforts and today he sheds light on the methods they used to expand at a manageable and strategic rate. [3:15] Matt gives an overview of The Hummus and Pita Co. and gives insight on what makes this concept so unique when compared to other fast casual restaurants out there. [6:20] Before getting started with The Hummus and Pita Co., Matt moved through the ranks at various franchise systems. [8:07] Matt views franchisees as an additional partner who is well-qualified to be running a segment of the franchisor’s business. You don’t just want to get numbers, but someone who is like-minded and will run your business well. [10:45] It is so important to flush out your concept before franchising. Even if people are breaking down your door wanting to join your concept, you are doing them a disservice by not making sure your foundation is well built. [12:24] When your concept is thriving, people will come to you for the opportunity to get involved as a franchisee, even if you aren’t yet offering franchises. [12:50] The Hummus and Pita Co. has developed a branding strategy that involves Area Developer Agreements where they sell their franchises 5 locations at a time, which is where they get their target of 100 franchises in a year. [14:45] With an Area Developer Agreement, you agree to open a certain amount of franchise locations over a definitive timeline, but you don’t necessarily have to have each specific location mapped out when you sign on. [16:29] For Matt, the biggest surprises in franchising has been overcoming the growth phases. Sometimes you have to realize that when you have a plan in place and then you get franchisees who open the doors, you may have to admit that things need restructured a bit and accommodate for those changes. [17:59] The ideal franchisee for The Hummus and Pita Co. is someone with an entrepreneurial spirit while also being able to navigate the operational challenges that come with franchising. I met Tab when he was 24 years old and he impressed me as a “fizzy” and savvy business owner. He's gotten better and better at biz since! Tab, starting from scratch, quickly grew his Nashville-based business to one of the largest plumbing companies in the market. Tab has been recognized as a leader in training, operations and system implementation in the home services industry. He is a firm believer in sticking to the systems that work. In August of 2006 Tab sold his company to Clockworks Home Services and joined their team as the Vice Presidents of Franchise Sales. Tab and his team grew the franchise at record setting growth numbers and quickly advanced his career to become the President of Franchise Operations. Tab left Clockworks in October 2009. He retired…for about five minutes. Tab just jumped back in the game with the acquisition of a plumbing company in Sarasota, Fl. We'll Discuss... How we met! Tab has the BEST story of moving from lackluster tract home work to a rockin' full service business! What adding a new division can do for your business. Becoming a teacher. Tab says, “It's all Ellen's fault!” Raising standards and what you will and won't tolerate. Selling a company – what Tab wants you to know before you do! We'll chat about Franchising! We have a lot of experience between us. Retirement at 41? Back in the game and getting back to basics. Buying a company – what to do first, second and third!
Don and Marty will talk with Andy Cucchiara, VP of Franchise Operations, about how ZIPS is reinventing the dry cleaning industry to appeal to the fast food generation. Zips is a cash only, pre-paid business. Every garment, every time is only $1.99 – no gimmicks, no exceptions. Because the cleaning machines are in-house you can drop off your garments at 9am and have them by 5pm. Because of the pre-paid model customers are more likely to pick up their garments faster. Have you ever had your dry cleaning sit at the drycleaners for weeks? I have! Also, by having the cleaning machines in-house the franchisees are able to do higher volume at a quicker rate. Andy can explain why ZIPS is a successful franchise in any economy, how the franchise builds from a strong support system and how they keep costs down by keeping inventory down. About ZIPS ZIPS, founded in 1996 and began franchising in 2006, has 18 locations on the East Coast. The company offers a fixed price of $1.99 for any garment to be dry cleaned and $1.19 for any shirt to be laundered. ZIPS offers same day service “In by 9 out by 5” with the motto, “.We take the sting out of dry cleaning.”
