How can climate activists be more successful in 2025? And where have they gone wrong? Kumi Naidoo has a storied career as an activist. At just 15 years old, he started out as an anti-apartheid campaigner and organiser in South Africa, before fleeing the country and attending Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, where he received a PhD for his research into the resistance movement in South Africa. After Nelson Mandela was freed, he returned home to help organise Mandela's campaign to become President, and later became the head of both Greenpeace and Amnesty International. Naidoo has turned his energy to a new campaign, one that focuses specifically on the phase out of fossil fuels: the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative. The Initiative, founded by former Cleaning Up guest Tzeporah Berman, seeks to establish a binding agreement amongst the most ambitious nations to phase out fossil fuels. So far, it has been endorsed by 16 nation states and 131 subnational governments and cities. Naidoo joins Bryony Worthington to talk about what he's learned from 45 years of campaigning, from hunger strikes to occupying oil rigs in the Arctic, where he thinks activism needs to go from here, and why he believes the Fossil Fuel Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative is the path forward. Leadership CircleCleaning Up is supported by the Leadership Circle, and its founding members: Actis, Alcazar Energy, Division Kempner, EcoPragma Capital, EDP of Portugal, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, SDCL and Wärtsilä. This week, I'm thrilled to share a few of my reflections and takeaways after reviewing my top episodes of all time after 3 years of podcasting. This will be our 168th episode. The primary goal of this podcast episode is to connect with my audience. What have you liked over the past 3 years? What haven't you liked? And indeed what would you like to see more of? The primary categories we've covered in this time are: Social ImpactSustainability, Regeneration and CircularityHealth & WellnessGenerally, there have been 2 formats to the show. The first is the primary format -- interviews. The second is solocasts -- which are journalistic deep dives in to a particular topic, book or issue. The third is a screen shared commentary with a few different guests in a panel format (though these are rare). And we've also shared bonus episodes, where I have guested on other shows, primarily in the health & wellness space that I call my professional home. Our top podcast after 3 years of podcasting are: Tied for 1st: Regeneration: Ending the Climate Crisis in One Generation with Paul Hawken https://caremorebebetter.com/regeneration-ending-the-climate-crisis-in-one-generation-with-paul-hawken-5-time-best-selling-author-and-environmentalistTied for 1st: Scary Smart: Scary Smart: How Artificial Intelligence Will Change Our World with Mo Gawdat, Bestselling Authorhttps://caremorebebetter.com/scary-smart-how-artificial-intelligence-will-change-our-world-with-mo-gawdat-bestselling-author 2nd: Indulge In A More Responsible Coffee with Mokhtar Alkhanshali, CEO of Port of Mokha, Producers of World-Renowned Coffee from Yemenhttps://caremorebebetter.com/indulge-in-a-more-responsible-coffee-with-mokhtar-alkhanshali-ceo-of-port-of-mokha-producers-of-world-renowned-coffee-from-yemen3rd: Eat To Beat Disease: Reimagining Our Healthcare Systems With William W. Solocasts and deep dives by yours truly? Both? Something else?Do you want to continue to hear about health and wellness topics? Other topics? Is there something you feel this podcast is lacking that would make it better? It could be news updates, or a second episode each week. While I'm not able to promise these things right now, if I hear from you that they're important enough, I may be able to move mountains and make it happen. Who do you want to hear from on this show? YOU CAN RECOMMEND GUESTS -- AND EVEN ASK TO COME ON YOURSELF! What's the worse that could happen? I could say no -- but we could also become friends IRL the way Beth Craig and I have. In 1993, eight hundred and fifty-seven people were arrested for civil disobedience in the Clayoquot protests, a series of blockades related to clearcutting in clayoquot sound, British Columbia. Today's guest, Tzeporah Berman, was one of the leading spokespersons and blockage coordinators at the time. Today, she is the co-founder of Stand.earth, a grassroots environmental organization, and chair of the fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty initiative, a proposed treaty to explicitly stop the expansion of fossil fuel exploitation and manage a transition from coal, oil, and gas to clean energy. Initially studying arts, fashion, and design, Tzeporah promptly switched to studying environmental studies at the University of Toronto after backpacking through Europe in the late 1980s, where she saw firsthand industrialization's impact on the Harz mountains in Germany. Tzeporah speaks with Marco about how she found herself in jail right after university supporting the Clayoquot protests, from which she learned that change is made through power. She also shares that we've invested more in clean, renewable energy in the last year but still need to continue declining emissions and production to combat climate change. The world is being re-invented, from how we heat our homes, to how we travel, and Tzeporah's work through stand earth and the fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty initiative shows us that now is an exciting and essential time to get involved and stand up for our earth.

We bring you a special show this morning called Over a Barrel. It's about the challenge of a just transition in Canada's energy sector, supporting those who work in it and limiting the worst effects of climate change. We talk to Travis Hann, a pipe fitter from Newfoundland who works in an oil patch near Fort McMurray, Alta; and Randall Benson, who used to work in the oilsands as an electrician. He now works in solar energy and helps other workers transition. Then, we hear from Sadie Vipond, a 15-year-old climate activist from Calgary, who joins us from her first day at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow. Plus, long-time environmentalist Tzeporah Berman discusses a bold proposal, the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative; and Chief Sustainability Officer at Suncor Energy Martha Hall Findlay argues that addressing the use of fossil fuels is only part of the solution. In Estevan, Sask., Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce Jackie Wall discusses efforts to help the many members of her community who work in the local coal mine and two major coal-fired power stations. And is Canadian oil and gas really ready for transition? We ask Jackie Forrest, executive director of the ARC Energy Research Institute, which provides analysis of energy trends to investors and corporate leaders; David Yager, an oil industry consultant and the author of From Miracle to Menace: Alberta, A Carbon Story; and Angela Carter, a professor of political science at the University of Waterloo who studies the economic and ecological risks of fossil fuel dependence.

In what world would stockpiling something so deadly it threatens the future of human survival on planet Earth, make sense? Yep, that's right, THIS planet! We're currently on track to produce 120% more oil, coal and gas (aka fossil fuels) in the next decade than the world can ever burn. So why are we still stockpiling it? In this jaw-dropping episode of Climate Curious by TEDxLondon, environmental campaigner, Tzeporah Berman, reveals the shocking grip the fossil fuel industry has on our governments, economies, societies… and even our minds, and what we can do to fight back. Tune in with co-hosts Maryam Pasha and Ben Hurst live from TED Countdown to learn about how we can think and act more like citizens and less like consumers, why fossil fuel polluters want us to feel guilty about our lifestyle choices, how ‘groupthink' made us all focus on emissions instead of production, and as Tzeporah puts it, why “we don't need better light bulbs, we need better laws.” Watch Tzeporah's TED Talk: https://www.ted.com/talks/tzeporah_berman_the_global_treaty_to_phase_out_fossil_fuels Sign the Fossil Fuel Non-ProliferationTreaty: https://fossilfueltreaty.org/

She has worked in environmentalism for 30 years, is the co-founder and International Program Director at Stand.Earth and the Chair of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative. From being arrested at the front lines of forest conservation initiatives, to speaking directly with the CEOs of fossil fuel corporations, Tzeporah has seen it all. We speak about regulation as it relates to both consumption and production, the difference between being a citizen vs. being a consumer, and we dissect the complexities of locating “responsibility” for ending the climate crisis. We discuss how humans are not separate from nature, but a part of nature itself, the unknown long-term effects of clearcutting and reforestation, and how to create hope in a seemingly hopeless situation. Anastasia Avvakumovah/CKTZ News - As the RCMP continue arrests of peaceful forest defenders at the Fairy Creek blockades, legal and political questions abound following the BC Court's decision to take over the persecution of arrestees at the request from logging corporation Teal Jones. “I find it reprehensible that the government is going to be using taxpayers' dollars and jailing its own citizens, because of its own failure to implement its own policy. I think history will look back on this moment in time in British Columbia's history and all of these people -- these teachers, these scientists, these nurses, these Olympic swimmers, amazing people that I met, who are blockading at Fairy Creek -- they are not criminals. They are heroes. And I think that's how they're going to be seen.” Long-time activist Tzeporah Berman, founder of Stand.earth, was deeply involved in the Clayoquot Sound old-growth-logging protests in the early 90's, the largest act of civil disobedience in Canadian history, with more than 900 arrests of forest defenders. As of Wednesday, July 28, the Fairy Creek Blockade's official media channel reports 496 arrests to date and counting, since police enforcement of the court injunction granted to Teal Jones Group began in late May of this year. Berman spoke about her arrest and objectionable treatment she received while in police custody on Saturday, May 22, as well as her recent hearing on Thursday, July 8, when she successfully challenged her bail conditions. The latter had prevented her from going back to the entire Fairy Creek area. Although the judge's ruling applied to her only, she encourages others arrested at the blockades to use her legal arguments, which are now on public record, to contest their own bail conditions and win the right to return to the protests. Berman is still charged with civil contempt of court and will have another hearing in the fall. Since her arrest, BC Attorney-General David Eby approved Teal Jones' appeal for the responsibility of prosecution to be handled by the Supreme Court of BC, meaning it will now be funded at taxpayers' expense. Teal Jones also lobbied for civil disobedience charges to be escalated to criminal conduct. Meanwhile, a coalition of independent media outlets won the right in a BC Supreme court ruling to be present and document the arrests at Fairy Creek without undue obstruction by the RCMP. Until the ruling last week and even in the days following, media access was at the whim of RCMP officers on the scene. The protesters at Fairy Creek, who prefer to be known as forest defenders, employ non-violent direct action, such as physically blockading loggers from road building and tree falling. Arrests have at times turned violent at the hands of the RCMP, notably so when dealing with indigenous youth blockaders. Berman remains hopeful that BC's remaining old growth, key to the planet's life-support systems, will be protected, and offers smart solutions for alternative economic development. With a hot wildfire season upon Western Canada and a record-shattering heat dome that just killed hundreds of people in B.C., it's imperative for Jewish Canadians to look at climate change as a real threat and ask what they can do to help. And yet, despite a clear intersection between environmental protection and Jewish values in the Torah and Mishnah, there has been very little collective Jewish action beyond a few groups and some prominent climate activists. One of those prominent activists joins us today. Tzeporah Berman, a longtime Canadian activist whose resume includes years at Greenpeace and working with various arms of the B.C. government, and who is the co-founder of Stand.earth, joins to discuss the Jewish angle on environmentalism: what we can do to help, and why climate change is a Jewish cause. Tzeporah Berman has been designing environmental campaigns and working on environmental policy in Canada and beyond for over twenty years. She currently is International Program Director at Stand.Earth. She is an Adjunct Professor of York University Faculty of Environmental Studies and works as a strategic advisor to a number of First Nations, environmental organizations and philanthropic foundations on climate and energy issues. Tzeporah’s thoughts on What Could Possibly Go Right? include:That we have the highest level of engagement around climate change than ever, as the former “invisible threat for the future” becomes tangible with impacts in our daily lives. That recent changes in technology, renewable energy pricing and engagement from civil society is creating political space for decision makers to actually act and stand up to the fossil fuel industry. The creation of a new global Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, “a campaign for something that is commensurate with the scale of the actual problem” and addresses fossil fuel production, not only emissions. That moving to renewable energy is also about redistributing power; an entirely different model than that of fossil fuels on which industrial society was built. That social change isn’t linear and many great moments in history happen at tipping points. That more people lose their homes today as a result of climate change than war. “We need big bold breakthroughs, because we are racing against the clock… This is our moment to propose some significant bold shifts and new ideas to change the landscape.”ResourcesFossilFuelTreaty.org Connect with TzeporahWebsite: Tzeporahberman.com Website: stand.earthFacebook: facebook.com/TzeporahFacebook: facebook.com/standearthTwitter: twitter.com/TzeporahTwitter: twitter.com/standearthFollow WCPGR on Social MediaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WhatCouldPossiblyGoRightPodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/postcarbonInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/postcarboninstitute/Learn more: https://bit.ly/pci-wcpgrseriesDon't forget to SUBSCRIBE so you don't miss an episode of What Could Possibly Go Right?Support the show (https://www.postcarbon.org/support-what-could-possibly-go-right/)

She co-chaired the Alberta government’s Oilsands Advisory Working Group, which developed consensus recommendations on the province’s climate plan. About our guest: Tzeporah has over two decades of experience designing campaigns and speaking to crowds small and large (and very large). She's one of the leading Canadian voices on climate, energy and sustainability — and she's had a tremendous impact. There are 40 million hectares of old-growth forest that are still around today in no small part because of her work. She’s an adjunct professor at York University, and works as a strategic advisor to several First Nations, environmental groups and philanthropic foundations on climate and energy issues. She co-chaired the Alberta government’s Oilsands Advisory Working Group, which developed consensus recommendations on the province’s climate plan. Tzeporah she co-founded ForestEthics — now called Stand.earth — nearly 20 years ago, and recently returned to the organization as their international program director. Links: I had the good fortune of collaborating with Tzeporah on a blog post about speaking to rallies a few years ago. Two years on, it's still the most popular post on my blog. Here's more information about Tzeporah from Stand.earth, formerly ForestEthics. You can also find Tzeporah on Twitter and Facebook. Notley, Trudeau bring homegrown recession to Alberta. Will momentum for political change last to 2019? (Guest: Robbie Picard)

We are experiencing the worst times in the Alberta oil patch in a generation, or maybe ever. It’s a homegrown recession caused by two levels of government who have no will or desire to build pipelines to export markets. Despite all the positive things they’re saying right now about Alberta’s oil and gas, these politicians, Notley and Trudeau, have surrounded themselves with the leading voices of the “No to oil” movement, putting people like Brian Topp, Tzeporah Berman, and Gerald Butts in positions of influence and power over Alberta’s resource sector. We’ve been fully colonized by the radical environmental movement and now regular families are paying the price. Job losses, foreclosures, and bankruptcies are all too commonplace. Trudeau, while in Argentina, even insinuated that Canadian men who work on pipeline construction would cause adverse “social impacts” in rural communities. However, now the people who orchestrated this catastrophe are saying they are the ones best able to repair it. Trudeau bought a pipeline that wasn’t for sale and stopped the expansion of it, and Notley is cutting oil production by nearly 9 per cent. It’s exactly what Greenpeace would do if they were in charge. No drilling. No pipelines. But the people have had enough. Rolling rallies, protests against the Prime Minister and his cabinet are becoming the norm in Alberta and largely apolitical people, folks normally interested in just going to work and paying their bills, are getting politically motivated to change their governments. Will the momentum for change carry through 2019? Or are people worn out, dejected and beaten down by the economy and two governments that refuse to listen? Joining me tonight is Robbie Picard of Oil Sands Strong to discuss the Prime Minister’s insult to Canadian men in front of the international press, Rachel Notley’s cap on oil production and what the future holds for Alberta’s oil and gas workforce.

Two big stories in the world of teachers are at the fore today. New numbers out show just how much violence teachers have to endure at the hands of students. Meanwhile, Tzeporah Berman will be making a command performance at an upcoming teacher's conference. But contrary to what social media thinks, union dues are not being used to pay for her appearance. We talk with the ATA's Jonathan Teghtmeyer about both of these stories.

We are living a turning point in history, the moment when we are re-envisioning industrial society. We now know that the cumulative impacts of our fossil fuel economy threaten the air we breathe, the water we drink and even a stable economy and climate. The good news is that major advances in technology and the dramatic drop in the price of renewable energy make the scale of change necessary within our grasp. Moderated by Kathryn Harrison, PhD'93 - Senior Associate Dean, UBC's Faculty of Arts; Professor of Political Science. This talk was recorded May 28, 2016 at UBC100: What's Next? at UBC's Vancouver campus.

In this podcast: an ethics expert on the importance of hate speech, eco-defenders stand up to corporate greenwashing, talking access to content with Canada's Pirate Party, and truckers with something to say. Not to mention some hard rock from the '80s, and a delicious taste of Montreal hip-hop! It's been a little while since Ann Coulter's speech at the University of Ottawa was cancelled because of concerns for her safety due to angry crowds. Coulter herself was the one who pulled the plug on her appearance, but she's filing a human rights complaint because of the experience which, she says, violated her freedom of speech. The ordeal has gotten people talking about what types of speech should and shouldn't be allowed a soapbox in public discourse. And beyond that – whether the banning of any kind of speech is something we should condone. Professor Arthur Schafer is Director of the Centre for Professional and Applied Ethics at the University of Manitoba. In his opinion, even hate speech plays an important role in public dialogue. Here's what he had to say about the topic, in an interview with Canadian Dimension's Jeff Hughes. Recently, Greenpeace hired Tzeporah Berman as its new Climate Energy director. The move has caused outrage among activists – especially ones in British Columbia, who are familiar with Berman's history of corporate collaboration. Dru Oja Jay is a member of The Dominion editorial collective in Montreal, and co-founded SaveGreenpeace.Org in light of the organization's growing flirtation with big business. Here's part of what he had to say in an interview with Redeye… Even if she isn't here to play co-host this week, Meagan Perry's still making an appearance. For the latest episode of The Ruckus, Meagan had a chat with Brian Vollmer of Helix – one of Canada's most well-known hard rock bands. They talked about everything from Helix's three-decade history to women in music videos, with a few of the band's tracks thrown in for good measure – including this one. From 1983, here's Helix with “Heavy Metal Love.” If listening to music is something you're passionate about, you probably get it any way you can. Maybe you head to the nearest record store and pay for it at the counter, the good old fashioned way. Or perhaps you opt for buying individual songs on iTunes. Or maybe – just maybe – you don't pay at all. With advances in technology, pirated material is becoming more common all the time, and so are the measures being taken to prevent copyright infringements. That's where the Pirate Party comes into play. Following its success in Sweden, the Pirate Party of Canada was formed in late 2009. Its goal is to reform the copyright and patent system to reflect changes in how the public consumes content, and to protect both our privacy and access to culture. Street Cred's Adam Bemma met for an interview with Daniel LaSalle, the Pirate Party's spokesman. Here's some of that conversation… “Getting a message out” is the theme behind the latest episode of Decoder – a new podcast put together by journalism students at the University of Western Ontario. For most people, conveying a message isn't something hard to do – we've got telephones, email, and even the classic face-to-face method, when you're feeling bold. But what about if you're behind the wheel of a big rig for hours at a time, alone on the road, with nothing to keep you company but ever-changing radio signals and your own thoughts? Well, it becomes more of a challenge. That's why there's a new community of truckers embracing the form of media you're using this very moment. Here's Curtis File's “big rig report” on how truckers are hitting the road – and the ears – through podcasting. We leave you with a song by Dramatik, a Montreal hip-hop artist who recently performed at the Artists for Haiti II concert there. The song, “40 Barz”, is the opening track off his album – “La Boite Noire.”
