The Trump administration and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) remain in the headlines for threatening to cut funding and personnel for a myriad of federal programs. Even in situations in which funding and employees have been reinstated, the pauses continue to have real-world consequences across America.Robert Collins, a political analyst and professor of urban studies and public policy at Dillard University, tells us how these cuts and freezes are impacting some parts of the U.S. more than others – in particular, red states and rural areas. A series of genetic testing on seafood served across Louisiana revealed that multiple restaurants are serving foreign-grown shrimp, while presenting it as domestically-produced seafood – which is against the law. This is a violation of Louisiana's seafood labelling law. SeaD Consulting has been conducting tests across the Gulf South and sharing its results. Its founder, commercial fishery scientist David Williams, tells us more about their findings and what they means for the state of the seafood industry.A coffee roaster and distributor in New Orleans is celebrating 100 years of business. Episode 3 of The Basic Income Show! Canada considers basic income legislation and Bret Weinstein talks nonsense about UBI... Also an experiment that suggests UBI leads to more meritocratic outcomes! In this episode of the Basic Income Show, we discuss the recent developments surrounding basic income legislation in Canada, specifically Bill C-223. We delve into the details of the bill, its implications for a guaranteed livable basic income, and the misinformation surrounding the concept. The conversation also touches on the political landscape in Canada, the role of research in shaping policy, and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for basic income initiatives. In this conversation, we discuss the challenges faced by non-college educated individuals in achieving the American dream, the rising deaths of despair among this demographic, and the implications of educational polarization as we debunk an interview with Bret Weinstein. We explore the case for Universal Basic Income (UBI) as a solution to economic inequality and disillusionment with capitalism, emphasizing the importance of providing a safety floor for all individuals. The conversation also touches on the role of inheritance in perpetuating inequality and presents a meritocracy experiment that highlights the impact of luck versus talent in achieving success. Finally, we discuss the Pope's recent support for UBI, framing it as a moral imperative in the face of automation and economic challenges. ----- Want more UBI data? Episode 2 of The Basic Income Show In this conversation, Scott Santens, Conrad Shaw, and Josh Worth discuss the implications of basic income through recent pilot programs like Sam Altman's three-year experiment and Denver's Basic Income Pilot Project, analyzing the results and addressing common misconceptions. They highlight the importance of understanding the nuanced effects of basic income on employment, caregiving, and overall well-being. Personal stories from recipients illustrate the transformative potential of basic income, while critiques of misleading narratives exemplified by a recent Coin Bureau video emphasize the need for a more informed public discourse. The conversation concludes with a call to action for future initiatives and community involvement in basic income projects. As a leading expert on the topic of unconditional/universal basic income (UBI), a subject area I've been focused on now since 2013, I'm constantly trying to correct misunderstandings and debunk misinformation/disinformation spread about the concept and the evidence behind it. The results of another big test of basic income were released in July 2024 and there's a lot of poorly informed summaries and opinions out there about it. As someone who has actually read the results released so far (there's still more coming) as well as the results from over a hundred other studies of basic income and unconditional cash transfers in general, here is my distillation of the findings and the importance nuances of those findings in the context of the pilot itself, and in the larger context of other pilot results. Thank you for taking the time to watch this, giving it a like, and sharing it with others. Civil Rights Attorney John Burris announced a $7.5 million settlement against the Antioch, CA Police in the 2020 death of Angelo Quinto. Quinto, suffering from a mental health incident was killed when police held him in a prone position similar to George Floyd for over ten minutes despite pleas from his mother. John Burris said: “While no amount of money can make up for the tragic circumstances surrounding Angelos's death, his family is to be commended for their unwavering commitment to improving the relationship between the community and Antioch police.” He added, “The Quinto family took their pain and anguish and immediately challenged the City to reform its approach to engaging the mentally and emotionally impaired. Their efforts at partnering with the City have resulted directly or indirectly with (1) body-worn cameras, a mental health crisis team, a mobile crisis unit, a police review commission, and state legislation outlawing excited delirium. The family efforts turned a heartbreak into a source of social justice activisms that will benefit the community for years to come. This is citizenship at its best.” Assembly Bill 360 was passed and signed into law, banning the term “Excited Delirium”, and its corollaries, like “Agitated Delirium” from being recognized as a valid medical diagnosis or cause of death in the State of California and prohibiting such terms from appearing on death certificates issued in the State of California. The Vanguard talks with Civil Rights Attorney Ben Nisenbaum and father Robert Collins about what the settlement means to them, but also the changes to law and policy they were able to get – due in large measure to the organization and activism of Mr. Quinto's surviving family members (Cassandra, Isabella, Andrei, and Robert), in partnership with Assemblyman Mike Gipson.

Much discussion has been had around basic income as a policy response to automation and as a result, over 150 pilot experiments have been launched in cities across the US to study it. One lobbying group in particular is behind these efforts to stop UBI, and its biggest funder is a billionaire most people have never even heard of. A map with a second majority-Black district gained approval by both Louisiana's House and Senate this week. This comes after a federal judge ordered a new congressional map that more accurately reflects the state's demographics.  State politics reporter Molly Ryan and The Times Picayune/The Advocate's editorial director and columnist Stephanie Grace join us to discuss the session and what might happen next. Closed primaries — where only members of that political party can vote — are common across the country.  But Louisiana abandoned this method in 1971 in favor of a jungle primary, where all candidates face one another on the same ballot and everyone votes regardless of party affiliation. Now, Gov. Jeff Landry wants to return to a closed primary, citing simplicity and fairness.  Robert Collins, professor of urban studies and public policy at Dillard University breaks down the key differences between the primary systems and discusses the potential political agendas attached to each.  Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Bob Pavlovich. Our managing producer is Alana Schreiber and our assistant producer is Aubry Procell. Patrick discusses Richard Doty Clip claiming the US government recorded its first Alien Fingerprints in 1984. We take a look at the video and many other clips to understand who Richard Doty is and can he be believed. Who is Richard Doty? He is a retired Master Sergeant who worked as a special agent for AFOSI (the Air Force Office of Special Investigations). Among ufologists, Doty is a controversial figure because of his work for AFOSI, where he worked as a counter-intelligence and disinformation agent. He may be best known for giving disinformation to Paul Bennewitz and Linda Moulton Howe, and for orchestrating a campaign to discredit Paul Bennewitz. Since then, Doty has become a whistleblower, assisting Robert Collins with his book, Exempt from Disclosure. Doty has recently even worked with Moulton Howe in correlation with fellow insiders to aid disclosure. (Source: https://www.gaia.com/person/richard-doty)

Robert tells us how black mayors have won a Hollow Prize when they get elected as a mayor of a city. "Black mayors taking office was the culmination of many political efforts undertaken during the civil rights movement. However, Black mayors began taking office just as many residents were departing for the suburbs, tax revenues were dramatically shrinking, and some powers of the office were being curtailed. Mayors can fight systemic inequity by prioritizing the needs of low-income and working-class residents in their budgets, but in order to meet all residents' needs, new methods of raising revenue will need to be crafted." The Cognitive Crucible is a forum that presents different perspectives and emerging thought leadership related to the information environment. The opinions expressed by guests are their own, and do not necessarily reflect the views of or endorsement by the Information Professionals Association. During this episode, Dave Maxwell discusses the importance of human rights upfront, influence campaigns, the pursuit of a free and unified Korea, resting on a foundation of deterrence and defense in the context of countering North Korea. Research Questions: Dave suggests technologies be developed which help Western governments access and penetrate North Korea. Also, he believes the potential succession in North Korea is an important research area, as well as mapping out the entire human terrain of key personalities and communicators. He also asks: how can we use defectors and escapees to help with the above research projects and bridge the North and the South. Finally, Dave thinks these “big 5” questions related to North Korea are important: What do we want to achieve in Korea? What is the acceptable durable political arrangement that will protect, serve, and advance US and ROK/US Alliance interests on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia? Who does Kim fear more: The US or the Korean people in the north? (Note it is the Korean people armed with information knowledge of life in South Korea) Do we believe that Kim Jong-un has abandoned the seven decades old strategy of subversion, coercion-extortion (blackmail diplomacy), and use of force to achieve unification dominated by the Guerrilla Dynasty and Gulag State in order to ensure the survival of the mafia like crime family cult known as Kim family regime? In support of that strategy do we believe that Kim Jong-un has abandoned the objective to split the ROK/US Alliance and get US forces off the peninsula?  Has KJU given up his divide to conquer strategy - divide the alliance to conquer the ROK? Turning Towards Life - a Thirdspace podcast

"The opposite of life is not death", writes Caitlin Johnstone, "The opposite of life is habit." So how, we wonder in this conversation, can we invest the ordinariness of life with the reverence and awe that calls to us? How might we find that aspect of ourselves, in our vast inner landscapes, that is neither our reactivity nor our defensiveness, but is itself life looking out at life in wonder? This episode of Turning Towards Life is a conversation about the difficult and liberating possibility of choosing to live in the midst of all that we might turn away from, hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. This is Turning Towards Life, a weekly live 30 minute conversation hosted by Thirdspace (http://www.wearethirdspace.org/) in which Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn dive deep into big questions of human living. Find us on FaceBook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/turningtowardslife/) to watch live and join in the lively conversation on this episode. We’re also on YouTube, and as a podcast on Apple, Google and Spotify. You can find videos of every episode, and more about the project on the Turning Towards Life website (http://turningtowards.life/) . Our source this week is brought to us by Lizzie, and written by Caitlin Johnstone. The Alive Ones The opposite of life is not death. The opposite of life is habit. One who moves from cradle to grave in the flip book illusion we call time without deeply attending to this cavalcade of miracles is one who never lived. Lifeless are they who live by habit, who walk by habit, who sit by habit, who see by habit, who think by habit, who feel by habit. Lifeless are they who drift through on dead patterns instead of giving the omnipresent Holiness its due reverence. The alive ones meet each moment like a dog greets its master at the door after work. They do not think: they wonder. They do not watch: they marvel. They do not walk: they adventure. They do not sit: they engage. They do not wait: they worship. Awe was never meant to be exceptional. Awe is the only sane response to this mess. The alive ones know this. The alive ones live this. The mundane does not exist for them. The ordinary is a fairy tale told by the lifeless to which the alive listen with rapt fasciation. They take in breath with the passion of a lover in bed. They entertain light in their retinas like a beloved guest. They merrily lose every war with the world. They dance without music in the frozen food aisle. They go out into the rain with bare feet and empty wine glasses. They greet every experience with exuberant curiosity, and as death approaches it receives that same greeting. And when they are gone those they leave behind will be saddened but fulfilled, and so very grateful, to have known one who truly showed up here. Star Trek Director Robert Wise - Episode 92

70s Trek: Star Trek in the 1970s

He’s the person who brought Star Trek to the big screen.  Director Robert Wise had a long and notable career before coming to Star Trek. When producers were looking for a director, his name jumped off the page! The hiring of Wise was a sign that the project was legitimate and the power of Paramount was behind it. It's also a sign that Gene Roddenberry and the studio execs knew they needed an experienced filmmaker to get this movie going and get it finished by its premiere date. Robert Wise was a guy who could do that.  At this point in 1978, he had worked in the business for 44 years and as a director for 36. That’s a lot of experience. Hiring Robert Wise In August 1977, Paramount CEO Michael Eisner decided to cancel Star Trek Phase II and create a big budget film for Star Trek.  As we talked about back in Episode 89 of 70s Trek, director Robert Collins had been hired to direct the Phase II TV pilot, In Thy Image in the fall of 1977. But Paramount felt that the big budget film project needed a credible film director. Gene Roddenberry suggested Robert Wise. The two had met years earlier at a science fiction seminar at the University of Arizona. They found they had a lot in common and talked about possibly working together someday.  The new Star Trek film gave them that opportunity. Eisner called Bob Wise and pitched the idea of him directing the movie. Wise told him he wasn’t a Trekkie, but he was willing to come down and talk about it. At the meeting, Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenburg told him about the project and set him up in a screening room where he could watch episodes of Star Trek to get a feel for the show. Wise told William Shatner for his book Movie Memories, “I liked them, thought they were all pretty good, and a couple of them were really exceptional. So I went back and talked with Michael and Jeffrey one more time, and at that point things really started falling into place. I’d made the Andromeda Strain, I’d made The Day the Earth Stood Still, what better way was there to continue forward than with the crew of the Enterprise?” Wise was hired in early March 1978. When he signed his contract, he insisted that he be given the authority of not just the film’s director, but also the executive producer. That gave him the authority to make decisions that got things done. If there was a logjam or difference of opinion about something, he could come in and tell others how to move forward. The Search for Spock But of course, it was the role that his wife Millicent and her father played that really helped the project move in the right direction. They convinced Wise that Leonard Nimoy as Spock was essential to any Star Trek project. The film would never work without him. So when Wise told Eisner and Katzenburg that he wanted to do the film, he also told them that the project can’t move forward without Nimoy. They agreed, and Eisner sent Katzenburg to New York to convince Nimoy to join the project. Wise was able to convince Eisner that giving in to Nimoy’s demands about royalties and residual payments for using his likeness, was a better alternative than trying to do Star Trek without him.  Paramount gave in to Nimoy's demands and within days he was attached to the project. Spock was back.

He revealed his latest work of investigative reporting, 'Zero Zero Zero', in which he delves into the sprawling network of the global cocaine trade. He traced how the $400 billion a year generated by drugs trafficking filters into the international banking system through money laundering from Wall Street to the City of London. The cocaine trade isn’t just a playground for criminals, Saviano argued. It is part of the structure of our global economy where some of the biggest players — the banks — have profited without facing a single criminal conviction.
