EP 144: When Everything Changes Overnight: Corie Blount on Fighting for His Son, CJ Episode Description: On this episode of This Thing Called Life, former University of Cincinnati standout and 11-year NBA veteran Corie Blount shares a deeply personal story far beyond the game. His 25-year-old son, CJ, went from a simple headache and fatigue to a life-altering diagnosis: dangerously high blood pressure and severe kidney disease. With no family history, the news came out of nowhere. Now on dialysis, CJ is waiting for a life-saving kidney transplant as Corie and their family begin the emotional journey of seeing who might be a match. This conversation is about more than basketball, it's about fatherhood, resilience, and what it means to show up when everything shifts in an instant. Corie also reflects on life after the NBA—from co-hosting Legends Unplugged with Terry Nelson to his work on the Bob Huggins documentary. It's an honest, powerful look at how quickly life can change and the strength it takes to fight for the people you love. Episode Highlights Host Andi Johnson welcomes former NBA player Corie Blount, whose connection to both the University of Cincinnati and the organ donation community brings depth and perspective to the conversation. Corie reflects on his basketball journey—from his time at the University of Cincinnati to an 11-year NBA career playing alongside legends like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, and Scottie Pippen. He shares his deep connection to Cincinnati, describing it as home and a place that continues to shape his life beyond basketball. The conversation shifts as Corie opens up about his son CJ's sudden health crisis, which began with what seemed like minor symptoms—headaches and fatigue—but quickly escalated. After being taken to the emergency room, CJ was diagnosed with extremely high blood pressure and severe kidney failure, leaving the family in shock. Corie candidly describes the emotional impact of the diagnosis and the steep learning curve his family faced in understanding kidney disease, dialysis, and transplant options. CJ is now undergoing dialysis treatments while awaiting a kidney transplant, and Corie shares how the family has rallied together to support him physically and emotionally. Despite the challenges, CJ continues to show strength, positivity, and resilience, even after graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in business. Corie emphasizes the importance of being present as a family, recalling how loved ones stayed by CJ's side in the hospital to ensure he never felt alone. He shares his willingness to become a donor himself and speaks about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle—both for donors and recipients. The episode highlights the importance of organ donation awareness, particularly the need for more people to consider living donation. Andi explains how simple it is to begin the donor testing process, often starting with a basic mouth swab. The conversation introduces the concept of paired kidney exchange, where donors who are not a direct match can still help save lives through a matching network. Corie expresses gratitude for organizations like Network for Hope, which help educate families and guide them through the transplant journey. Beyond his family's story, Corie shares updates on his life after basketball, including his podcast “Legends Unplugged” and involvement in the Bob Huggins documentary. The episode concludes with a powerful call to action—encouraging listeners to get informed, consider donation, and support families navigating similar challenges. Key Takeaways Health Crises Can Happen Without Warning CJ's story is a reminder that serious health conditions can develop unexpectedly, even without a known family history—making awareness and regular checkups essential. Support Systems Make All the Difference In moments of crisis, the presence of family, community, and trusted organizations provides strength, stability, and hope. Organ Donation Saves Lives—and Starts With Awareness From simple testing to paired exchanges, understanding the donation process can open doors to life-saving opportunities for those in need. Tweetable Quotes “I have an indebtedness of gratitude to the city and the university, and that's why I'm still here, and this is home now.” Corie Blount “ It's more of a learning curve for me, and then just trying to make sure that let him know he's loved and that we're supporting him. He's never alone. Whenever he was at the hospital, our whole family was there sleeping on the couches and on the floors and everything, just to show our support. We're supporting it now through this; it's just a learning curve.” Corie Blount “I appreciate what you guys did with the program, that you guys have to bring awareness to his situation, and it kind of educated me also.” Corie Blount “I never even knew you could live with one kidney, right when you met someone saying that they needed a kidney, like, 'Man, if I get my kidney up. How am I going to live? How is my life going to be moving forward?' But the good thing that I've learned is that you have to treat your body right, no matter what.” Corie Blount “And it's important also to say that to be tested to be a living kidney donor, it's actually a very simple process, and it starts with a mouth swab. They send you a Q tip, it's a longer Q tip, and they do a mouth swab, and that's how the process starts.” Andi Johnson “It's hard for someone that you know, being of such a young age, you know, I think too, though it is helpful that he is young and doing the dialysis versus being older.” Corie Blount “Well, our hope and prayer is that you are the match, and if not, it's someone else in the family or but I would, I would not be surprised if there aren't people just knocking down the door to see if they would be a match for CJ.” Andi Johnson “Interesting fact about the living kidney donation process is that even if you're not a match for CJ, or if anyone else wants to be tested, and they're not a match for CJ, but they can still be a donor. Then there's this program. It's called the Paired Kidney exchange. So then you, for example, would donate to someone else that you were a match for, and then someone else who was a match for CJ would then donate for him.” Andi Johnson “Man, this is phenomenal that I don't know how we would have been able to deal with what we deal with. And fortunately, organizations like yourselves are stepping up and getting people to understand what's going on, and it's definitely needed.” Corie Blount Resources: Donatelifeky.org https://getoffthelist.org/ https://www.networkforhope.org/ https://www.networkforhope.org/about-us/ https://www.networkforhope.org/stories-of-hope/ https://www.facebook.com/NetworkForHopeOPO https://www.youtube.com/@NetworkforHope. https://aopo.org/ RegisterMe.org/NetworkforHope

The Cincinnati Bearcats finally showed the fight and tenacity we've been waiting for all season, securing a crucial 93-83 road win against UCF. This victory marks West Miller's first Quad 1 win of the season and breathes new life into a team that seemed to be on the brink of collapse. From the opening tip, it was clear this wasn't the same Bearcats team we've seen struggling in recent weeks. The offense, which has been anemic for much of the season, exploded for 93 points – the highest total we've seen since conference play began. Dayday Thomas set the tone early, pouring in 18 first-half points and finishing with 20 for the game. His aggressive play and quick decision-making were infectious, sparking a team-wide offensive resurgence. Dillon Mitchell was another standout performer, contributing 19 points on an efficient 9-of-14 shooting. His ability to finish around the rim and connect on lob passes provided a much-needed vertical threat to the Bearcats' attack. Aziz Bandaogo also had his best game of the season, scoring 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting and grabbing 6 rebounds. What was most encouraging about this performance was the team's resilience. Every time UCF made a run to close the gap, Cincinnati had an answer. Whether it was a timely three-pointer from Simas Lukosius or a clutch basket from Jizzle James down the stretch, the Bearcats showed a level of composure that has been sorely lacking in recent weeks. While the defense wasn't perfect – allowing UCF to grab 17 offensive rebounds is concerning – the overall effort and energy were vastly improved. The Bearcats forced 16 turnovers and used their length and athleticism to disrupt UCF's offensive flow throughout the game. This win doesn't erase all of the struggles we've endured this season, but it does provide a glimmer of hope. With upcoming home games against BYU and Utah, there's an opportunity to build some momentum and potentially make a late-season push.

You give the audience what they want. And back then, they couldn't get enough Crosstown Shootout coverage. The rivalry had hate. It had characters. It had attitude. It has none of that today. I'm talking about from the players and coaches. The animosity is still there among a faction of long-time fans. The game itself is always sold out, intense and raucous. No fan will leave Fifth Third Arena on Saturday afternoon saying the game has lost its luster. But several factors have quashed the pregame hype, and it seemed to start to diminish after polarizing coach Bob Huggins left UC in 2005. Huggins let his players speak their minds to reporters. Terry Nelson guaranteed the Bearcats would " blow out" Xavier in the 1992 Crosstown Shootout, telling then-Post reporter Bill Koch: “Xavier doesn't have a chance.” The Bearcats did, indeed, blow out Xavier. Having characters like UC coach Bob Huggins involved in the Crosstown Shootout was what made it special, columnist Jason Williams writes. In 1994, Huggins refused to shake hands with then-XU coach Pete Gillen after the Musketeers won at Cincinnati Gardens. It set a tone for a decade of deep disdain from Musketeers players and fans toward Huggins and UC. Along came Xavier coach Skip Prosser, who played the role of the friendly, book-reading, Guinness-drinking Irishman and always played nice with Huggins in public. Things are more buttoned-up regarding the media now. Coaches and players are coached to be respectful of opponents in media interviews and social media posts. That's not specific to UC and Xavier. College sports are more corporate today. If there are any big, brash personalities like Nelson on the current Xavier and UC rosters, we don't see (or hear) about it during Crosstown Shootout week. Coaches Sean Miller of Xavier and Wes Miller of UC are polished, like so many of today's college basketball coaches. They aren't larger-than-life media personalities like Huggins, Gillen and Prosser were.
Following this story from Erin Couch and Dan Horn - https://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/mlb/reds/2024/09/30/pete-rose-dies-henderson-county-nevada-cause-of-death/75460666007/ Cincinnati Reds legend Pete Rose was found dead at his home Monday in Clark County, Nevada, according to officials there. The Clark County coroner's office could not immediately be reached and the county spokeswoman who confirmed Rose's death provided no other details, including the cause of death. ABC News reported that a family member found Rose and said the county medical examiner indicated there were no signs of foul play. The ABC News report also said Rose, 83, had not been in the care of a doctor at the time of his death. Rose's home is being examined and the cause of death remains under investigation. Although there was no indication Rose had been seriously ill at the time of his death, Rose said in 2018 court filings connected to his divorce that he was "in poor health and disabled." In that same divorce case, Rose's lawyers said he struggled to walk, was on blood thinners and had undergone three heart procedures in five years. Pete Rose, who died Monday at his home in Nevada, at a press conference in 2015 at the Pete Rose Sports Bar and Grill in Las Vegas. Despite those health problems, Rose maintained a busy schedule and continued to travel all over the country, often to sports memorabilia shows. A Facebook post Monday from the Music City Sports Collectibles and Autograph Show in Tennessee featured a photograph taken Sunday of Rose sitting in a wheelchair, surrounded by several of his teammates from his days in Cincinnati with the Big Red Machine. He died the next day. "Amazing that they all got to see each other one last time," the post said. Earlier this year, in April, Rose canceled an appearance at former UC basketball coach Bob Huggins' annual fish fry charitable fundraiser in West Virginia "due to health reasons," according to a post on the event's Facebook account. "We're sending Pete our warmest wishes for a full & speedy recovery," the post said. The Cincinnati Reds also confirmed Rose's death in a statement late Monday. “Our hearts are deeply saddened by the news of Pete's passing,” said Reds' owner Bob Castellini. “He was one of the fiercest competitors the game has ever seen, and every team he played for was better because of him. Pete was a Red through and through. No one loved the game more than Pete and no one loved Pete more than Reds Country.” Though the all-time hits leader began his record-breaking career in Cincinnati and won two World Series titles here, he had lived in Nevada for years, near Las Vegas, where he owned a now-closed bar and frequently made paid public appearances and signed baseball memorabilia.

Had he not chosen the coaching profession, Cliff Ellis could've easily spent his life as a professional musician. In the mid-1960s, his group The Villagers was a sensation and even recorded at the legendary Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Ala. Ellis remembers joining Roy Orbison on stage at a sold-out concert in Dothan, Ala. "If you can perform in front of people with Roy Orbison behind you, you're going to be OK going up against Dean Smith and Mike Krzyzewski," he said. Ellis announced his retirement in December, ending a 49-year coaching career. His final 17 seasons were at Coastal Carolina, where he led the Chanticleers to 297 victories and 10 postseason appearances. His 831 career NCAA victories put him at ninth in Division I basketball history behind Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim, Bob Huggins, Jim Calhoun, Roy Williams, Bob Knight, Dean Smith and Adolph Rupp. Ellis says the changing landscape of college athletics, namely NIL and the transfer portal, led him to walk away. He's currently writing a book about his life, and he looks back fondly on his time at Clemson from 1984 to 1994. Ellis led Clemson to its only ACC title in school history in 1989-90 when the Tigers claimed the regular-season title with back-to-back home triumphs over North Carolina and Duke. Four years later, he abruptly resigned and later took the head job at Auburn. He said he was angry over the Clemson administration's handling of the Wayne Buckingham situation in the face of NCAA scrutiny of the player's eligibility as a freshman. Ellis remembers exactly where he was on Jan. 18, 1990 when he heard Danny Ford was out as Clemson's coach. "I was playing golf with our pilot, Earle Ambrose," he said. "We were on the 15th hole at Boscobel. It was a tough, tough time. "But I told Danny at the time to tell Clemson thanks a million. Because they paid him a million dollars. And then he went to Arkansas and got another thanks-a-million. I never got those thanks-a-millions."
