"How I reversed my unhappiness" | Tal Ben-Shahar for Big Think

“How I reversed my unhappiness,” with Tal Ben-Shahar We were told from a very young age, whether explicitly or implicitly, that happiness stems from success. It's all about the attainment of the next goal. And yet, more often than not, achieving these goals does not bring us to a happier place, certainly not in the long-term. One of the issues that people have with the pursuit of happiness is that it's a selfish endeavor. But is it? When we pursue happiness, oftentimes, we are in a much better place to also help others. The problem though, doesn't lie in the pursuit of happiness but rather in our concepts. So is the pursuit of happiness selfish or selfless? According to Harvard professor Tal Ben-Shahar, it's neither and both. It's self-ful. Selfulness synthesizes the best of both worlds of selfishness and selflessness. The two work together reinforcing one another in an upward spiral of generosity and benevolence. Up next ►► Don't chase happiness. To break down the path to happiness, Tal explains the SPIRE model, which includes five elements: Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Relational, and Emotional well-being. The duo discuss the concept of post-traumatic growth (PTG) and how individuals can become more resilient after facing significant life challenges. Antifragile systems are all around us. One example of this is our muscular system. We go to the gym to lift weights. By doing so we are putting pressure on our system to help it grow stronger. The human body is an antifragile system. From a psychological perspective, antifragility comes in the form of PTG, or post-traumatic growth. Exploring the profound influence of self-image, we draw insights from Albert Bandura's social cognitive theory, highlighting the resilience gained from a positive self-perception. Additionally, we uncover the scientific backing for gratitude practices, with studies in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology emphasizing its positive impact on well-being and self-esteem. Throughout, we sprinkle in a fun fact – the transformative power of smiling on mood and self-perception – and Eleanor Roosevelt's timeless quote to inspire listeners on their journey toward authentic self-liking. In this episode, Tal joins Grant to discuss the study of happiness in an academic setting. They ask: How successful are the liberal arts in teaching students how to be happy? What does religion have to offer in the conversation on happiness? What is the ideal profile for the teacher - or student - of a happiness course? And, is happiness the missing key to uniting the University?

Tal talks about recent findings that show how our perception of money is damaging our happiness — and what we can do about it. In this episode, you'll learn: Why our perceptions of money have changed in a post-pandemic world. How social comparison can negatively affect our views on money. Why it's so important to change our view of money for the sake of our well-being.

Linda Gancitano was the first girl on her high school boy's soccer team, so she got to play alongside her younger brother, Nick. According to Nick, even at an early age, Linda "never took any guff from anyone" and would slide tackle the biggest male forwards. Flash forward to University of Central Florida (UCF) and Linda was a veteran on the team when Michelle Akers joined -- ironically, the entire time, Michelle thought she was going to get cut. Linda shares that the team had an attitude of "do something or get out of here. Basically, you got to pull your own weight." And that she did, and more... In this episode Linda shares about her time on the USWNT, and we hear from one of her students, Kayla, as Linda became a Happiness Studies teacher and educator as well as Founder, How Low Can You Go Challenge (initiative empowering youth to reduce their school's carbon footprint through reduced energy, water & food waste). When asked what she wants to say to her teammates, Linda gushes, "I am so proud of us and of every single team from then on...whether we won or we didn't...it's just that the tradition of the United States Women's National Team is absolutely incredible." The "cult of never enough" encourages the belief that more money, possessions and achievements will make us happy. But Manisha Thakor has learnt through personal experience that emotional wealth is more important than financial wealth. Listen to learn how to redefine your success.    Manisha Thakor is the author of the book Money Zen: Escape the Cult of Never Enough and Reclaim Your Life. In this episode of Behavioral Grooves, she discusses with Kurt and Tim how she chased the American dream of financial success for 30 years before realizing it had become a nightmare. She became a workaholic and lost sight of what truly brings happiness.    Manisha talks about how the "cult of never enough" encourages the belief that more money, possessions and achievements will make us happy. However, she realized that emotional wealth is more important than financial wealth. She discusses the importance of financial health over wealth, which includes having enough to meet your needs without stress.   How does society measure success in terms of money, power and productivity rather than by character and contribution? Manisha talks about the Buddhist concept of the "hungry ghost" which represents our insatiable desires. She argues that the answer is often "less" - shedding commitments, possessions and being still in nature.    Listen to find out how to redefine success beyond financial wealth and move towards a balance of financial health and emotional wealth.   If you'd like to support the work of Behavioral Grooves, you can become a Behavioral Grooves Patreon member.   Topics  (3:45) Welcome and speed round questions. In this episode, we talked to happiness expert Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar about the science of happiness, focusing on his account of happiness as “wholebeing,” comprised of five elements of well-being which make up his “SPIRE” model: Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Relational and Emotional well-being.    Tal Ben-Shahar is an author and lecturer who taught two of the largest classes in Harvard University's history, Positive Psychology and The Psychology of Leadership, and taught Happiness Studies at Columbia University. His books on happiness have been translated into more than thirty languages and have appeared on bestseller lists around the world, and his work has featured on media outlets including CNN, BBC and the Daily Show.    Tal obtained his PhD in Organizational Behavior and BA in Philosophy and Psychology from Harvard. Today he consults and lectures around the world to executives in multinational corporations, including Google and Microsoft, the general public, and at-risk populations. Tal is a serial entrepreneur, and is the co-founder and chief learning officer of Happiness Studies Academy, Potentialife, Maytiv, and Happier.TV.    Key conversation points: How Tal defines happiness and its relation to flourishing: flourishing is the outcome of happiness The relation between Tal's “SPIRE” model of happiness and flourishing, and between happiness and wholeness Tal's definition of spirituality as living a life in which we see our activities as meaningful and purposeful Practices for building spiritual wellbeing: exercise to write down a “calling description” rather than a job description Tal's criticism of widespread hurriedness today, and a strategy for going through life in less of a hurry  The connection between happiness and “antifragility”  Antifragility as “Resilience 2.0,” and its connection with post-traumatic growth: not only bouncing back, but becoming stronger and healthier than before A principle Tal recommends for recovering from trauma: “things don't happen for the best, but we can make the best of things that happen,” and how to apply this to our lives The connection between physical exercise and happiness: “not exercising is like taking a depressant”   talbenshahar.com happinessstudies.academy flourishfmpodcast.com
