Ils s'associent à Iggy Pop dans "I Wanna Be Your Slave". In this episode we’re talking to Fatima Jones, who I check in with almost weekly, getting a read on everything from the Black cultural landscape and how to keep my proverbial wig on straight when folks try us (you know how that goes), to understanding how to make the marketing and communications of our Black arts spaces sing, and whose family I love love love. We met through a mutual sister-friend Jessica Lynne, and continue to be sisters in this space and beyond. Fatima has joined hands with the Red Olive Universe and hosted one of the last in-person events known to man: a brunch in her house in Bed Stuy Brooklyn before we all retreated into our homes. That communal connection—around Black art, Black culture, small and community-based Black arts organizations, and the new and old friends who love them—has continued to inspire me through the past year. Fatima Jones is a cultural strategist, marketing, public relations and reputation management leader. She currently serves as Senior Director of Marketing and Communications at the Apollo Theater, a nonprofit arts and cultural anchor committed to Black artists and audiences, located in Harlem, NY. She is the former Director of P.R. for the Brooklyn Museum (BKM) where she led the media relations and social media campaigns for all of its exhibitions, including the critically acclaimed David Bowie Is and the transformative We Wanted A Revolution: Black Radical Women. Prior to Brooklyn Museum, she spent almost a decade at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). Her consultancy experience includes work with Ronald K. Brown/Evidence Dance Company, Weeksville Heritage Center and 651 ARTS. She is a former voting member of the Bessies Dance and Performance Awards and has served on many granting panels, including NYSCA and Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation. David Bowie, the shape-shifting recording artist responsible for such era-defining albums as Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and Low, was, it could be argued, a living, breathing work of art. Celebrated in 2013 as a style icon and cultural lightning rod by the V&A in London, whose major retrospective David Bowie Is… became the museum’s fastest-ever selling show, Bowie touched, and was touched by, creativity in all its forms — not simply music but also fashion, photography, video art and graphic design. His penultimate album, The Next Day, released without warning in 2013, was heralded as a long-awaited return, and a serious return to form, and the critically acclaimed Blackstar, his 25th and final studio album, released just days before his death, now looks set to provide a fitting final act to a career that consistently defied categorisation. Here, in tribute, we look back at some of the David Bowie Greatest Music mix

Almost two million people so far have visited the blockbuster exhibition “David Bowie Is”, on show now at the Brooklyn Museum (until 15 July). The exhibition was masterminded by Geoffrey Marsh, the director of London's Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) theater and performing arts department. He has organized several other major “immersive” exhibitions, harnessing state-of-the-art audio and visuals to tell narratives in new ways, such as “You Say You Want A Revolution? Records and Rebels 1966-1970” (2016-17) and “Pink Floyd: Their Mortal Remains” (2017). He joins our host Charlotte Burns in London to talk about combing through Bowie's collection to tell the story of how this music legend evolved. Marsh also talks about how new technologies—specifically augmented reality—are about to change the ways in which exhibitions are curated and experienced, as well as the role of the museum itself. He also discusses his dream exhibition: “a show so powerful that probably 10% of people would walk out because they hated it. For the other 90%, it would have had a very profound effect. I know it's possible,” Marsh says. Pointing out that most people can remember seeing their first dinosaur skeleton in museums, he believes there is “something hardwired into us about profound visual experiences which, in a weird way, I think we may have lost in museums and galleries.” That sense of curiosity and wonder is something Marsh is working to bring back as we enter what he calls a “golden age of museums being able to engage with completely new publics in different ways”. “In Other Words” is a presentation of AAP and Sotheby's, produced by Audiation.fm.

Beagle 2: How the UK Landed on Mars

In the early 21st century, a group of British adventurers, scientists, engineers and explorers launched a mission to Mars. The mission was called Beagle 2 and was led by the late Professor Colin Pillinger. The mission attempted to answer one of the most profound questions asked by humanity (and David Bowie): Is there life on Mars? Beagle 2 was expected to land in 2003, but fell silent. A core of enthusiasts continued the hunt for Beagle 2 and, 11 years later, it was found. Beagle 2 had not crash landed and recent analysis suggests that it may still be operating today. We will tell the amazing story of how the UK became the third nation in history to land on Mars with the help of a group of Christmas-jumper-wearing-boffins, led by a mutton-chop wearing farmer, who designed a probe on the back of a beer mat and knocked it up in a shed. Dean started his career working on the British-built Beagle 2 Mars at Leicester University. Although it was declared lost, 11 years later the craft was found to have made it in one piece to the Martian surface and most probably conducted some science. It was immediately declared the winner of the interplanetary hide and seek competition 2004-2015. He enjoys reading science fiction (hard, not soft), trolling conspiracy theorists on the internet and generally not to taking life too seriously.

It's 2017! Where better to start than with an old friend, much theatre/Dr Who nerdiness, and absolutely filthy sexual content. Seriously - **STRONG ADULT/SCIFI CONTENT** Scott Brennan and I met twenty years ago when we were both cast in an amateur production of Marat/Sade and we've been complimentary dickheads ever since. A writer, stand up comedian, actor, skilled improvisor, musician, voice-over artist, mentor, producer, star of the Talking Poofy podcast and all round spunk, Scott has been a familiar face on Australian TV and a familiar voice on Australian radio for more years than either of our ageing, forgetful brains care - or are able - to remember. We share a love of the timelord and an adoration of David Bowie (Scott was my date for the David Bowie Is... exhibition in 2015), and he's one of my favourite guest singers in my many idiotic band ventures. Not to overstate it, but he's the David to my Freddie in Under Pressure. From the changing face of gay identity, to which people over 50 years old we'd root, to difficult parent/child relationships, to the inherent impracticalities of the spit roast, join Uncle Scotty B and Aunty Quim as they dispense relationship advice and struggle to remember actors' names like two drunk, dirty, addled old ravaged hags (i.e. basically, us). P.S. In case you were wondering, the thumbnail image is precisely what Scott delivered when I asked for a high res picture...  P.P.S. Ian MARTER. It was Ian Marter...GAH!! P.P.P.S. Sound is a little different in the studio narration - sorry about that - emergency recording set up!  Tickets for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre on 9 April 2017 - a tribute to Split Enz with many special guests - can be purchased here!

Citing pressure of visitor numbers, the museum banned sketching at its recent “David Bowie Is” exhibition – a move that shows how hard it is for curators to reconcile accessibility and academic values, the FT’s arts writer says See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
