Johan Bruyneel and Spencer Martin break down the explosive action from Stage 16 of the Giro d'Italia, where the race's first true mountain stages exploded the GC, with UAE's Isaac del Toro finally showing signs of weakness as he struggled to hold the race lead, as Richard Carapaz, Derek Gee and Simon Yates closed in, and pre-race favorites Primož Roglič and Juan Ayuso both fell out of the GC completely, with Roglič leaving the race entirely. They discuss a few main takeaways from the stage before previewing yet another brutal stage tomorrow on Stage 17, predicting who will win, how the action will play out, and which riders present the best betting value.
Tegoroczny wyścig to łącznie 21 etapów o długości 3410 kilometrów.

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP Guys, the Giro is almost upon us! This weekend, the 3 week beast that I raced twice in my career kicks off over in Albania of all places. The start list is absolutely stacked, with the likes of Roglič, Ayuso, Bernal, and heaps more huge riders going toe to toe to try to take home one of the most iconic jerseys in cycling; the Maglia Rosa. One rider who's going to throw his hat into the ring and have a crack at this year's GC is the young Canadian talent Derek Gee - and I'm stoked to have him on this month's pod to talk all things Giro, preview the race, and answer a few questions sent in by you guys! Derek's been a pro on the road for just 3 years, After spending his early years racing on the track, he burst onto the scene at the 2023 Giro d'Italia where he finished 2nd on 4 stages and spent more time in the breakaway than he did in the peloton! I think I managed to make it into the breakaway at a grandy once in my whole career - it's bloody hard - but Derek made it look easy, and absolutely ripped that race to pieces. Although he didn't come home with a stage win, he sure made a name for himself and put himself up there as one of the most exciting racers to keep an eye on. The year after, he made his debut at the big one; the Tour de France! Going into that race, Derek was looking to repeat his exploits from the ‘23 Giro and poach a few stages, and it was great to hear how this focus shifted to GC over the course of the race, leading to him finishing in the top 10 overall; an absolutely huge ride, that really proved he can do it all! Derek's a cool guy. Born in Ottawa, I loved hearing about how inspired he was by the Canadian World Tour races the GP's Quebec and Montreal, and how that led him down the path of professional racing, eventually coming over to Europe and joining Israel Premier Tech - the team he'll be riding for until at least 2028! After chatting a bit about his career, and how he's feeling ahead of the 2025 Giro that kicks off this weekend, we preview this year's race and take a bit of a look at how Derek's going to approach it. He's been at the front of races for long enough now to be heading to the start as one of the favourites; so he's definitely feeling the pressure! It's been a while, but I wanted to bring you - the listeners - in on this interview, so we wrapped up by answering some of the questions you all sent in over the last week. Does Derek see other ex track stars like G and Wiggo as inspiration? What interval session does he use to get race ready? What's his favourite Celine Dion Song? I ask Derek all these questions, and more, and he's got some cracking answers. I loved chatting to Derek. As well as being a mega talent, he's a really chilled out, humble guy and no doubt one of the most exciting racers in the pelo. I can't wait to see him race the Giro - the most beautiful of all the Grand Tours - and reckon he's a real Maglia Rosa contender. The Giro? More like the Gee-ro……..right? Enjoy this ep, guys. Sit back, relax, grab yourself a limoncello and some gelato, and get excited for the Giro with me and Derek. Cheers!
For the penultimate instalment of our Review of 2024 series, we reprise and re-iterate on one of the most popular episodes of 2023, a long & very in-depth interview with Redbull-Bora-Hansgrohe Head Sports Director Rolf Aldag. The venue is again Mallorca, the occasion is again the team‘s first training camp of the winter, & once again posing the questions is Daniel Friebe. Last year, Aldag was looking ahead to Primoz Roglič‘s first season with the team - & precisely that is the main topic of conversation here, with Roglič's huge disappointment at the Tour de France & season-ending triumph at the Vuelta a España.

It's once again the most important time of the year for road cycling. On Saturday, the 111th Tour de France rolls out from Florence, Italy, and it's time to get ready for the racing. Velo Pod host Hannah Knapp is joined by former pro cyclist Bobby Julich and Velo European Correspondent Andrew Hood to discuss the upcoming 2024 Tour de France. The discussion begins with the GC contenders and the excitement surrounding Tadej Pogacar who is fresh off a commanding Giro d'Italia victory and looking to complete the elusive Giro-Tour double. For all the hype of the “Big Four” of Pogacar, Vingegaard, Evenepoel, and Roglič does anyone else besides Pogi stand a chance at the yellow jersey after injury riddles seasons? The conversation then moves on to the must watch stages, with a focus on the grueling hilly opening stage that features seven consecutive climbs, and the challenging mountain stages and the final stage time trial in Nice. When the race finally wraps up, will Mark Cavendish leave as the sole owner of the Tour de France stage win record? He needs one more to best Eddy Merckx, but any win in the Tour de France is a tall order, especially at Cavendish's age. We also discuss the absence of American rider Sepp Kuss, the loyal lieutenant to Vingegaard and the reigning Vuelta champion, and the impact it will have on the race. Things then move on to a discussion about other American riders to watch, including Matteo Jorgensen and Nielson Powless. And of course there's Sean Quinn representing in his brand new national champion's jersey. Finally, Hoody and Bobby fill us in on what has them excited for the 2024 Tour de France beyond the GC race, including top riders to watch. Listen in wherever you stream podcasts for the full discussion, and tune in to Velo for Tour coverage all race long.

No rest for the weary! The dust has barely settled on the Giro and the Dauphiné is already upon us. The Tour's biggest warm-up race will host the return of Roglič, Remco and Landa. With the Giro d'Italia starting in Turin on Saturday, we turn most of our new episode over to a preview of the corsa rosa and ask the question: can Geraint Thomas — or in fact anyone — outfox the flying Tadej Pogačar? We start with an extended interview with Geraint Thomas, beaten on the final weekend last year by Primož Roglič, who took the title by just 14 seconds. While acknowledging that Roglič's fellow Slovenian Pogačar is a class above his GC rivals for the maglia rosa, 2018 Tour de France winner Thomas tells us why he's backing himself to produce another sustained run for the Giro title and why he believes that he and his super strong Ineos Grenadiers team can be optimistic about their prospects. We also hear from another of Pogačar's likely rivals for the title, Ben O'Connor. The Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale rider is targeting his first ever Grand Tour podium, and his spring form suggests it's more than possible. The Australian says he's relishing the chance to show what he can do on Italy's roads and that he's hoping to be celebrating a podium finish in Rome in three weeks' time. During the Giro, we'll have diary contributions from young Brits Lewis Askey and Harrison Wood, who are both making their debut in the race. Groupama-FDJ's Askey tells us that his primary job will be to help set up Kiwi teammate Laurence Pithie in the bunch sprints and that he'll be kicking back in the evenings with a dose of Jeremy Clarkson. Cofidis's Wood, meanwhile, is hoping that his pre-race reading of Roy Keane's autobiography will inspire him to knock over some big names in the hills and mountains. We also look at what promises to be a scintillating contest among the Giro sprinters, where the depth of talent looks as strong or perhaps stronger than it's likely to be at the Tour de France in July. There's Milan and Merlier, Ewan and Groves, Kooij and Jakobsen, to name just half a dozen of the fastmen who'll be aiming to amass stage wins and the ciclamino points jersey. As the first women's Grand Tour of the season, the Vuelta Femenina, got under way in Spain earlier this week, our newshound Chris Marshall-Bell took the opportunity to get the latest on defending Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift champion Demi Vollering's end of season exit from SD Worx and rumoured arrival at FDj-Suez for a cool one million euros a season. FDJ boss Stephen Delcourt and SD Worx manager Danny Stam offer their take on the Vollering transfer, which is sure to be biggest ever seen on the women's side of the sport. In our regular 'How to Make Cycling Better' feature, Visma | Lease a Bike's Vuelta a España champion Sepp Kuss explains how course design could be improved to make racing more exciting.
