South African guitar virtuoso Derek Gripper plays music originally meant for the 21 stringed lute-harp, the kora, on his 6-string Segovia-styled guitar and does it so well that the world's leading guitarists and kora players keep wondering how one even does that. His original music is informed by kora masters Toumani Diabaté, Salif Keita, Estonian minimalist composer Arvo Part, Brazilian guitarist Egberto Gismonti and German Baroque innovator, J.S. Bach. Watch out, because he's about to collaborate with the Iraqi-American oud player and composer Rahim Alhaj. (Ed. note: just wait until the 11 or 13-strings of the oud and those maqams make it to the 6-string guitar in Gripper's hands!) For now, Gripper plays another unbelievable arrangement of a Malian kora song, as well as an original song informed by the cascading style of kora music, plus some of the second cello suite by J.S. Bach, in-studio. - Caryn HavlikSupplemental Reading: The Beauty of Everyday Things, In Search of Lost TimeSet list: 1. Alla L'a Ke 2. Moss on the Mountain 3. J.S. Derek Gripper plays Malian Kora music on a vintage Hermann Hauser classical guitar...and if that doesn't get your attention, nothing will! John Williams himself describes feeling that this was, and, I quote, "absolutely impossible until I heard Derek Gripper do it." So that's pretty cool. We talk about his work translating the music of this beautiful African harp to the nylon string guitar, and the extraordinary instruments he has used in his quest to make the music in his head come to life including 8-string guitars, fanned frets and interchangeable magnetic fretboards. Yes, he has gone deep here! Also discussed are Derek's visit to the Hauser Guitars workshop to choose a career-defining instrument from their archive, his trust in embracing the "less good idea" and his love of single purpose technology, from Rolleiflex medium format cameras to his vintage Nagra reel-to-reel tape recorder. Speaking of recording, I also managed to record Derek playing my new guitar using this beautiful piece of technology and mics by Microtech Gefell and Royer. The results are right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpYW9sq0aR0 Derek Gripper is a true iconoclast - as comfortable with Bach as he is with Toumani Diabaté. He has a truly orchestral sound when playing solo and fills concert halls around the world regularly. He is also one of the most quick-witted and funny people I've met. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Welcome to Season 4 of Conversations with Musicians, with Leah Roseman. For this first episode in 2024, I welcome the violinist, author and coach Jennifer Roig-Francoli. We talk about her newly released book, Make Great Music with Ease!: The Secret to Smarter Practice, Confident Performance, and Living a Happier Life, and her Art of Freedom Method which incorporates the mind-body skills of the Alexander Technique. This episode also features excerpts from her solo violin album, Solo Con Spirito, with music of Kreisler, Enescu and Bach. Jennifer had the opportunity to study with Nathan Milstein, Josef Gingold and Stanley Ritchie and has had an interesting career as a performer, including with Appollo's Fire. We talk about performing barefoot at Carnegie Hall, travels to India, and in Jennifer's words” how you do one thing is how you do everything”. I myself have been very influenced by different mind-body practices like the Alexander Technique, and the power of thought to help me address habitual tensions in my own life has really helped me, and I trust this inspiring and helpful episode will be of help to you, both musical performers and not, because the content of this discussion addresses universal challenges for all of us. This conversation is punctuated by some excerpts from Jennifer's solo album, and I hope you'll listen to the whole album which you'll find both on streaming services, or better yet for purchase on her website: https://artoffreedom.me/meet-jennifer/ Like all my episodes, you can watch this on my YouTube channel or listen to the podcast, and I've also linked the transcript to my website: https://www.leahroseman.com/episodes/jennifer-roig-francoli Here you can sign up for my weekly newsletter to get access to Sneak Peeks for upcoming episodes: https://mailchi.mp/ebed4a237788/podcast-newsletter I have had several interviews talking about some of the same issues as this episode. For the almost 40 years we've been producing Hearts of Space, our mission has been to bring you "Ambient, Space, and Contemplative music from around the world and across the centuries." We've done it in dozens of countries and musical genres. Yet despite its rich and influential musical culture, we've only managed to create a handful of programs of the music of Africa. And within Africa, the music of West Africa and its signature instrument, the 22-string harp/lute called the kora—stands out for its melodic beauty and charm. On this transmission of Hearts of Space from guest producer DAVID J. EGAN, we focus on the gentle joy of West African music and the kora, on a program called 'WEST AFRICAN SPIRITS.' Music is by RODERICK McLEOD & VINOD PRASANNA, AYUB OGADA, SONA JOBARTEH, STEPHAN MICUS, SEBATIERRA, ABLAYE CISSOKO & VOLKER GOETZE, and DEREK GRIPPER. Ep #124 with Derek Gripper, guitarist and composer. Derek Gripper, who is from Capetown, South Africa, discovered the music of Toumani Diabate, a kora player from Mali and it changed his life. He decided to transcribe the music by this African Griot for the classical guitar. Toumani is an true innovator on the kora and developed a style where he plays 3 parts at once - bass lines, accompaniment and melody simultaneously. He adapted this multi-layered fingerstyle of Tomani's kora playing and has been touring and teaching classes online to students from all over the world. The guitarist, composer, ethnomusicologist, and instrument builder Paolo Angeli is associated with traditional Sardinian music and has co-organized an international arts festival in Palau since 1996. He has collaborated with Pat Metheny (who uses Angeli's guitar in Orchestrion), Fred Frith, Hamid Drake, Iva Bittova, Zeena Parkins, and Derek Gripper. Paolo Angeli plays the prepared Sardinian guitar, a hybrid electro-acoustic instrument that looks like a guitar crossed with a cello, and has virtually orchestral capabilities. Angeli's custom creation has been fitted cross-wise and lengthwise with additional strings: cello strings and drone strings, and has numerous other inventions attached to it, including hammers, pedals, and some propellers at variable speed. Then there's his array of effects, controlled by both his feet and hands. These custom modifications enable him to become a crazy-awesome one-man band, as he draws on Sardinian folk music, jazz, flamenco, Arabic suggestions, post-folk and contemporary classical music in his compositions. Paolo Angeli strums, bows, and hammers the instrument, and adds traditional Sardinian vocalizing, in a stunning performance of music from his latest, JAR'A, for this remote session, filmed on the island's northern shore. - Caryn Havlik Watch Paolo Angeli on the Sardinian shore:

Derek Gripper has miraculously discovered the ability to bring the dazzling polyrhythmic music of the West African Harp, the Kora, onto the classical guitar. Egberto Gismonti, Bach and Keith Jarrett are all elements of his musical DNA. We hang with Derek and he treats us to some live performances and stories of how he happened upon discovering this new world of music for the guitar. Derek Gripper was in NYC performing as part of the ongoing World in Trance Festival which continues April 11th and 12th in NYC.
My guest this episode is Derek Gripper who is a classically trained guitarist who has made waves in the guitar and world music scene with his ground breaking guitar arrangements of west African folk music. I ran into Derek at the Adelaide Guitar Festival last month and I found his stories fascinating. In our chat we explore some of the West African oral musical traditions and how they relate to this mystical 21 string harp called the Kora. We talk about Derek's recent collaborations with John Williams and kora virtuoso Toumani Diabate and how he managed to notate the highly complex and virtuosic kora music. Please enjoy my conversation with Derek Gripper.

The Kora has originally 21 strings whereas a classical Western guitar only has 6! It sounds like at least two guitars are playing at the same time, but it’s only one man and his magical hands! Tune in to find out how Derek Gripper’s interpretation of African music and also Western classical composer Bach sound like on a “normal” guitar! Author: Miriam Karout, www.planetmundus.com
South African guitarist Guy Buttery visits the studio to perform music from his latest self-titled record. Hear virtuosic feats of bending, tapping, picking, harmonics, and other techniques and textures yet to be named for guitar. Dig into his latest record on which he has collaborated with South African musicians Vusi Mahlasela, kora-to-guitar wizard Derek Gripper, and blues guitarist Dan Patlansky, along with a piece for sarangi and mbira – “From Srinagar.” More pictures from the session here: Facebook.com/newsounds Guy Buttery plays a custom-made Casimi guitar, a “piano that fits in a guitar case,” made of very dense & heavy African blackwood, and sporting double carbon-fiber truss rods to handle the bending of the neck. Plus, music from the late Malian guitarist and griot Tiécoro Sissoko, who played for many years as a sideman with Toumani Diabate in Bamako. Listen to the title track from his only recording, “Keme Borama.” PROGRAM #3893, With Guy Buttery (First Aired 8-30-2016) ARTIST: Guy Buttery with Piers FacciniWORK: The Upper Reaches [5:09]RECORDING: Guy ButterySOURCE/INFO: guybuttery.bandcamp.com ARTIST: Guy ButteryWORK: A Piece for Rudolf Fritsch [5:20]RECORDING: Live, WNYC 8/25/16SOURCE: This performance not commercially available. Born-Free South Africa: A Kaleidoscope of Colors Produced by Sarah Geledi and Simon Rentner Airdate May 26th 2016 Join us on a modern-day musical adventure into Africa's Rainbow Nation. Now, 20-plus years removed from apartheid, South Africa is a nation deep in transition. And, it's reflected in its music—brimming with enthusiasm and creativity, yet also suffering from the growing pains of a new democracy. On the ground at the 2016 Cape Town International Jazz Festival, we celebrate the country's amazing diversity and discover its hottest local talent: Mafikozolo, the sizzling fashionista Zulu pop duo; Tribute “Birdie” Mboweni, a soulful and socially conscious songbird from the rural north; Gigi Lamayne, a fresh voice from hip-hop’s "born-free" generation; Bokani Dyer, a worldly jazz-cat on 88 keys; and Derek Gripper, a Capetonian guitarist virtuoso making us rethink African classical music as a whole.
