Anne Glover, co-founder and CEO of Amadeus Capital Partners, discusses the ways that the tech investment scene has changed since her firm launched in the late 1990s, how tech started as a niche sector but has since started to encompass everything, why AI hype is valid but there's more to it than just generative AI, and what the UK needs to do to shake its history of not scaling tech companies like the US can.  Glover co-founded Amadeus Capital Partners in 1997 alongside Hermann Hauser. The firm generally backs deep tech firms, with major portfolio companies including Graphcore, Improbable and Oxford Nanopore Technologies. Glover discusses how the firm these days is particularly keen on areas including quantum computing, health tech and cybersecurity.

Life on the Fretboard with Michael Watts

Derek Gripper plays Malian Kora music on a vintage Hermann Hauser classical guitar...and if that doesn't get your attention, nothing will!  John Williams himself describes feeling that this was, and, I quote, "absolutely impossible until I heard Derek Gripper do it." So that's pretty cool.  We talk about his work translating the music of this beautiful African harp to the nylon string guitar, and the extraordinary instruments he has used in his quest to make the music in his head come to life including 8-string guitars, fanned frets and interchangeable magnetic fretboards. Yes, he has gone deep here!  Also discussed are Derek's visit to the Hauser Guitars workshop to choose a career-defining instrument from their archive, his trust in embracing the "less good idea" and his love of single purpose technology, from Rolleiflex medium format cameras to his vintage Nagra reel-to-reel tape recorder.  Speaking of recording, I also managed to record Derek playing my new guitar using this beautiful piece of technology and mics by Microtech Gefell and Royer. The results are right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpYW9sq0aR0 Derek Gripper is a true iconoclast - as comfortable with Bach as he is with Toumani Diabaté. He has a truly orchestral sound when playing solo and fills concert halls around the world regularly. He is also one of the most quick-witted and funny people I've met. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. The speed of light is a hard constraint in this world.“Just mention the letters “I.T.” and a disheveled Harry Potter like figure will emerge from his back-row slumber. Either cheerful or recovering from a perhaps too cheerful night, he continually brightened our spirits. He has entertained us with his guitar stylings and has bemused us with his weekend hangover wear – an exceedingly well-worn bathrobe. Sociable and hospitable, he quickly shed his studious image to become the social butterfly we know and love today. He became, in short, the man we'll remember from the party photos. The women, for their part, will remember him too. From the Guatemalan highlands to the valleys of Ireland, the man is a legend. Though he often did his best to provide evidence to the contrary, he is both fantastically bright and, according to his group mates, surprisingly efficient. Nonetheless, we will remember him best in his inefficient moments, evoking smiles, laughter and, often, puzzlement.” From the Republic of Insead 03D yearbook edition.Tune in to find out who the guest was, I promise he's one of us – the INSEAD MBA'03D vintage.A few of my favorite snippets from my conversation with the first guest to this limited series podcast.20 YEARS IN PERSPECTIVE:§ It's amazing how much the world of technology has moved forward - when we were at INSEAD, it was a time before Facebook, before cloud computing, before the iPhone, before cryptocurrency.References, mentions:Republic of Insead, MBATRIX_, Chris Larmour, Victoria Entwistle, Common Crawl, AlphaFold, Protein fold, Deepmind, “Dial F for Frankenstein” by Arthur C. In der Nachmittagsfolge sprechen wir heute mit Lukas Stranger, CEO und Co-Founder von NXRT, über eine Aufstockung der Finanzierung um weitere 2,1 Millionen Euro.

For the latest episode of Mistakes Were Made, Alex and Frank are joined by Citywire's executive chairman and founder Lawrence Lever, AKA their boss.  A former lawyer and investigative journalist, Lawrence tells Alex and Frank about some of the mistakes he made when starting the business, what he learned from them, and how these lessons ultimately led to the success Citywire enjoys today.   Some early missteps include not taking all the advice on offer from renowned venture capitalist Hermann Hauser and trusting a rival to act honorably (spoiler alert: they didn't!).  We also discuss mistakes that the media can make when covering investment (Lawrence has some pointers for Alex on this), what fund managers often get wrong when starting their own shops, and why asset managers are probably nicer than investment bankers.   This is the last episode in the current series of Mistakes Were Made. We're taking a break over the summer and will be back September. Thank you for listening.

The BBC Micro - Interview with Hermann Hauser Hi, everyone, and welcome to episode 99 for May 2020 of the Floppy Days Podcast, where we look at home computers of the 70’s and 80’s across the globe, not just the U.S. This episode is one in a series of episodes on one of the iconic British machines that was so important to the home computer revolution: The BBC Micro.  In episode 97, I had an interview with one of the key members of the BBC Micro team: Mr. Steve Furber.  In this episode, with Steve’s help, I was able to get an interview with another key member of that team: Mr. Hermann Hauser. Last episode (#98) I summarized the history of the BBC Micro and I don’t want to repeat that here, but I want to give you just a bit of information about Hermann to help set the stage for the interview to follow: Chris Curry and Mr. Hauser set up a company called Acorn Computer Ltd. and in January 1979 they launched their first product: a microcomputer kit named Acorn System 75.  The name Acorn was chosen because the microcomputer system was to be expandable and growth-oriented and appeared before "Apple Computer" in a telephone directory. Their follow-up product was a microcomputer called the Atom.  After it had been released into the market, Acorn (due to an idea proposed by Hermann) decided to build an improved 6502-based machine with far greater expansion capabilities: the Proton. Hauser quickly pulled in Steve Furber (who had been working for Acorn on a voluntary basis) and Sophie Wilson to help complete a revised version of the Proton which met the specifications that the British Broadcasting Corporation was shopping around to find a partner for their planned literacy program.  BBC visited Acorn and were given a demonstration of the Proton. Shortly afterwards, the literacy program computer contract was awarded to Acorn, and the Proton was launched in December 1981 as the BBC Micro. Hermann Hauser believes that if he had had just a little more foresight all those years ago, the world would now talk about Acorn compatible rather than IBM compatible computers.  Wouldn’t that be interesting? Anyway, I’m very excited and proud to have gotten an interview with Hermann and I enjoyed talking with him very much.  I hope you enjoy it as well. I’m still planning, in upcoming episodes, to cover all of the usual topics on the Beeb, such as its history in depth, tech specs, modern upgrades, Web sites and a ton of other information about this machine. Before we jump into the interview, I’ll spend just a moment to let you know about any new acquisitions I’ve managed to get for the hobby and any hobby-related things I’ve been working on. In this episode, Charis and I speak to Cambridge University alumna, Pat Marsh. When we recorded the interview, we didn't have any of the studio equipment with us, just a phone, but we thought it would be a crime not to share Pat's incredible story. Pat was the first woman in the UK to hold a gaming licence and in 1979 she brought Space Invaders, the arcade game sensation, to the UK shores. Pat has had a distinguished business career, most recently serving as Executive Chairman of Philip-Treacy. Philip Treacy's hats have adorned the heads of royals and celebrities alike, including Grace Jones, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Sarah Jessica Parker, Beyonce and Victoria Beckham. https://medium.com/this-cambridge-life/the-woman-who-brought-space-invaders-to-the-uk-and-is-championing-womens-sport-7f1aa8ffedb8 (https://medium.com/this-cambridge-life/the-woman-who-brought-space-invaders-to-the-uk-and-is-championing-womens-sport-7f1aa8ffedb8) I grew up in Tipton, a working class town in the Midlands. All my family lived locally so we were always in and out of each other's houses. People always think that, if you are hard-up, things are difficult but everyone was the same, so we didn't know any different. My sister reminded me recently that we had to sleep with our coats on the bed to keep warm. We had a flat roof and each year someone put up a new tarpaulin to keep the rain out. But it wasn't completely watertight so there were always buckets around. Although we were poor we were also proud, with polished shoes. My father joined the Grenadier Guards at the age of 15 and fought with the Desert Rats in North Africa. Since reading Malory Towers I'd always dreamed of going to boarding school. But then I heard of such a thing as university, after watching the The Student Prince and The Wild and the Willing at the local Odeon, and thought that sounded even better. I was the only girl from my school to go to Grammar School and the only girl to go on to university. In those days girls went to secretarial or teacher training college so this was unusual. I got a place at Hull University to study geography, which was my best subject at school. University in the 1960s was magical. One time at the Old Hill Plaza George Harrison held my hand – what more could a girl want in life? After university, my career started with slot machines. I'd set up a business to service these machines in cafes. We started being asked about a new game called Space Invaders, so went to a trade show in Japan and ended up forming a joint Japanese company, which was the first to bring Space Invaders to the UK. We had to file down the slots, which were just big enough for Yen, so that 10 pence pieces could fit in. Everyone wanted one and we found ourselves airlifting these arcade games to businesses all over the UK. It was a crazy time. We had two Japanese colleagues living with us, one dealing with imports and exports, the other with technical issues. Because of this my children picked up Japanese. Later we decided to just import the electronic components and build the machines in the UK at Ace Coin Equipment Ltd in South Wales. This meant we needed to design a circuit board for the new range of machines, which led to my first association with Cambridge. One of our directors, Keith Arnold, knew of two young men, Hermann Hauser and Chris Curry in Cambridge who were paid £20,000 to design the new board. With this money they founded Acorn Computers. Haute couture hats have been my most recent business venture. I served as Executive Chairman of, and was a major shareholder in, Philip Treacy Ltd. Philip's couture hats have been worn by royals and celebrities and are widely regarded as works of art. I have some hanging on my wall at home. I sometimes feel like someone who wears lots of metaphorical hats. A year or so ago I did a course at Cambridge Judge Business School. We were asked what...

Humans are social creatures using communications that are ‘regulated’ by trust, ethics, social systems and law. Our world of interactions and networks is increasingly complex and automated. What happens when events and decisions become too fast for us to perceive, let alone control? Professors Huw Price and Murray Shanahan join Dr Jonathan Cave and Dr Hermann Hauser.
