A breakthrough song on a breakthrough album from a band that's generationally influential, with a couple of covers that fully transform but still respect the spirit of the original. Karma Police, originally by Radiohaed, covered by Scary Pockets featuring Monica Martin, and by Pierce the Veil. Outro music is Radiohead's Creep, also covered by Scary Pockets, this time featuring India Carney, where circumstances allow them to bring a little more funk.
This week, Tommy is joined by actor, singer and songwriter Ben Barnes! On the acting side, Ben has become known as “the king of fantasy.” He starred as Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia franchise before going on to create iconic performances in Dorian Gray, Westworld, Marvel’s The Punisher, and of course, the fan-favorite villain in the wildly popular Netflix series, Shadow and Bone. Earlier this year Ben released his debut album, “Where The Light Gets In.” Inspired by the soul and pop music he loves so much, the album is about the different stages of a relationship; beginnings, tension, sorrow, sex, love, endings, nostalgia. It’s about how our history and our scars configure to make us who we are in this moment. Today, Ben opens up about how he had to get used to feeling more exposed as he became a household name, why now was the right time in his life to put aside a wildly successful acting career to focus on his music, the fears and pressures that came with introducing a different side of himself to the world, going after his dreams at a point in his life that might feel like its too late to many, why age is just a number and shouldn’t dictate your dreams, what he was hoping to achieve with his beautiful debut album, how he reveals a much more personal side to himself for the first time through his music, if he has any interest in giving the fans what they want: a role in the Harry Potter world, his thoughts on reprising his villainous role in Shadow and Bone, how the most critical things ever said about him were said by himself, and so much more. Benjamin Lazar Davis joins the pod to discuss production, songwriting, multi-instrumentalism, cross-cultural collaboration, and the artist's journey. Be sure to stream his new single with Monica Martin "No Need To Reply" when it's released on Friday, Jan 12, 2024! And follow Ben on IG here You can find my music at: https://scoobertdoobert.pizza Benjamin Lazar Davis is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, arranger, composer and record producer. He is a member of several bands, including Okkervil River and Cuddle Magic. Davis attended New England Conservatory of Music. Davis's father Peter started being a musician at the age of five. Peter toured nationally and internationally with several groups, including a brief time with the Mamas and Papas. Like his son, Peter can play a variety of instruments ranging from banjo to clarinet to trombone. Davis's interest in Africa came through his father who spent three years in Malawi as a school music director. Davis has a brother and two sisters. He collaborates with his brother Tim on songs. In 2006 while students at The New England Conservatory of Music Davis, Alec Spiegelman, Christopher McDonald, Kristin Slipp, Cole Kamen-Green, and David Flaherty founded Cuddle Magic in 2006. The band is known for collaborations with many artists including Fred Frith, Ran Blake, the David Wax Museum, Larkin Grimm, Mike & Ruthy (formerly of the Mammals), Phyllis Chen, Joy Kills Sorrow. Individuals from Cuddle Magic have also performed with Bridget Kearney, Railbird, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, Baby States, Ronald Reagan, Bird Fly Yellow, Margaret Glaspy, The People's Champs, Girls Guns and Glory, Lake Street Dive, Petal Shield, Split Red, Yapp! and The Superpowers Horns. Davis went to West Africa in 2009 and 2014 to study music. "The first time I went ...., I was studying awa drumming, which is like drum ensemble music for a bunch of different instruments." Davis is referring to a music tradition involving the djembe and dunun style of drums. In his first visit he heard of northern Ghanaian tradition of music called Bawa. In 2014 Davis traveled to Ghana with Bridget Kearney of Lake Street Dive and a former member of Cuddle Magic. They spent just over two weeks in the capital Accra, studying the traditional music of Northwest Ghana with master gyil player Aaron Bebe. They subsequently co-released an EP, BAWA, incorporating gyil music as source material. After leaving Ghana, Davis came down with typhoid and was very sick. When Davis and Joan Wasser (Joan As Police Woman) met in 2013, they found they both had an interest in Central African Republic Pygmy music. Davis co-wrote, recorded, co-produced and toured for the album Let It Be You (Reveal Records 2016) with Wasser. Ben is currently based in LA. Leave the studio to like, let everything happen. Unofficial Mayor of North Tulsa Danny Boy O'Conner and Monica Martin tell us about the upcoming Big Show-Off talent show on the KRMG Morning News with Dan Potter.
As a musician himself, Hrishikesh Hirway knows how much thought goes into a song. So, he created Song Exploder, the series where all kinds of musicians – from big names like Madonna to lesser known indie acts – take listeners through the making of their greatest hits, piece by piece. This week, Hrishikesh joins Podcast Playlist host Leah-Simone Bowen as guest curator. He's sharing what he's learned from the performers he's hosted on his show, and what's gained from looking beyond a song's hype or genre. Then, he'll take us through his favourite podcasts: the comedy talk show he listens to when he's hitting the gym, fictional stories that will crack you up and a series where interesting people read poetry. All that, and more, on this week's episode of Podcast Playlist. Featuring: Song Exploder: "Monica Martin is a singer and songwriter based in Los Angeles. Before that, she was based in Madison, Wisconsin, where she was part of the indie rock band Phox. She's been a featured guest vocalist on songs by James Blake and Vulfpeck. In this episode, Monica breaks down her song "Go Easy, Kid," along with the tracks's producer, Khushi. It's a pretty meta story, as she talks about making a song that's in part about how hard it can be to make a song. And more generally, how hard it can be to let go of things we get hung up on." Everything is Alive: "Atsuko is a set of bagpipes, and she's looking for some peace and quiet." Hello from the Magic Tavern: "The premise of the show is that the host, Arnie Niekamp, fell through a dimensional portal behind a Burger King, into the fantastical land of Foon. In this episode, a lovely fox gives Chunt a mysterious box with a voice inside." How Did This Get Made?: "Dom's never before mentioned brother, the return of Han, a car in space, and magnets. The HDTGM/Fast family is reunited as Adam Scott joins Paul, June, and Jason to discuss the ninth installment in the Fast & Furious franchise F9. So you know what that means…" Interesting People Reading Poetry: "In this episode, Grian Chatten reads "The Windhover" by Gerard Manley Hopkins. Chatten is the frontman of the Irish post-punk band Fontaines D.C., recently described by NME as "the new heroes of the rock resurrection." The members of the group met while attending music college in Dublin and initially bonded over a shared love for Irish literature. Their second album, A Hero's Death, has been nominated for a 2021 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album."

As we are getting closer to the end of the year I figured it was time for some quiet indie tunes from 2022. This collection goes from the slow pop of Monica Martin to the ambient vocals of Brian Eno to the simple folk sound of Phosphorescent to a Joni Mitchel cover. My favorite track is "This Is How It Works" by Angel Olsen. It will probably be in my top three songs of the year. Enjoy these vocal tunes, I'll get back to ambient soon. Cheers! Ryan Lerman has a few tricks up his sleeve. Best known as the cofounder of Scary Pockets, a dynamic funk band from LA who came to prominence on YouTube, Ryan is also an accomplished singer songwriter, bassist, arranger and producer. His early work with Michael Bublé, John Legend, Vanessa Carlton and Ben Folds prepared him for a career as a session player, and his early solo records showcased his plain spoken, plaintive and soulful connection to the human condition. Lerman met his Scary Pockets cofounder Jack Conte when the two were still in high school in Marin County, California. It's a relationship that has informed and influenced him musically and professionally since then. He says that they “tend to be systems level thinkers” who “focus on the process instead of the outcome.” That kind of process oriented approach has paid off: Scary Pockets and Lerman are extremely productive: they have released at least one new video each week since 2017, racked up millions of views and a loyal audience of funk enthusiasts around the world. They've recorded hundreds of songs featuring a continuously rotating line up of quality musicians and singers. Collaborators have included many former guests of this podcast including Jacob Collier, Louis Cato, Louis Cole, Tyler Duncan, Joey Dosik, Larry Goldings, Caleb Hawley, Cory Henry, Theo Katzman, Lawrence, Adam Levy, Monica Martin, Jake Sherman, Antwaun Stanley, Jack Stratton, and Cory Wong. Here he talks about his happy place (“in the middle of business thinking and artistry”), what he learned about leadership by working as a sideman, how tried to become a lawyer but ended up playing funk music instead, and what minor nine chords have to do with any of it. www.third-story.com www.wbgo.org/studios
In her relatively brief career as a musician, Monica Martin has toured in Australia, New Zealand, around Europe and throughout the United States. She's performed on late-night television, shared the stage with world-renowned bands like The Head And The Heart and The Lumineers, and played a bunch of major music festivals. Though she's done so much already, Martin seems to only be getting started. The Los Angeles (by way of Wisconsin) singer-songwriter, whom you might know from PHOX, is now releasing music under her own name and preparing to release a new album. Recently, Martin spoke with My First Band host Tyler Maas about collaborating with James Blake, her plans for the future and everything that brought her to this point. Over the course of the conversation, Martin talked about the experience of moving from Chicago to the small Wisconsin town of Baraboo as a kid, reluctantly joining a band after high school and some of the most memorable and significant moments from her tenure in PHOX. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Monica Martin ("Go Easy Kid").
Earth, Fire, Air and Water!!! In this episode of Pop Music For Smart People I feature four musical artists or duos that represent each of these four elements. How you ask?? Ummmm I'm actually not even completely sure but it all boiled down to the feeling each of these artists make me feel with their music. The artists are Stalgia who represent water, Monica Martin who represents earth, Mina and Bryte who represent fire and Yehra who represent air. I love this episode so much and had so much fun creating it. So come and listen and get transported into each elemental beat landscape. THE POWER IS YOURS!!!

Monica Martin was 18 years old, driving in the car with her friend Matt and singing along with the radio. She had always enjoyed “hamming it up” and singing along to music, but she had no intention of taking it seriously. But the universe had other plans for her. Her friend, who Matt, who was a musician, coaxed her into performing; she started to sing in public and on friends' records, which all led to her writing her own songs. She fronted experimental-folk-pop sextet, PHOX, formed in Madison, Wisconsin in 2012. PHOX released an eponymous album, played big festivals, national TV shows, and flew overseas to play shows far away from home. PHOX went on indefinite hiatus in 2017, and Monica moved to LA because “Wisconsin is cold as f*ck”. She found herself a periwinkle casita and is feeling freer than ever in the city of misfits. She's presently at work unpacking her mental confusions by cataloging/celebrating the “fuckery” of her ex-es (and herself) in lowkey pop songs with soul whispers, some golden-era hollywood dramatics, and psychedelic flickers courtesy of a theremin. Monica is still figuring out who she is, but quite happy to share her cautionary tales: “I made hundreds of mistakes so you don't have to.” She recently released her new single “Go Easy, Kid” and is featured on the James Blake song “Show Me” from Blake's latest release. Monica and I did an ill fated interview in 2015 which was never released. We were both back in Wisconsin over the summer and decided the time was right to get together for an interview redo. Here she talks about discovering her musical talent in her late teens, what it means to be “Wisconsin sober”, the complex and delicate dynamics of her first band Phox, her mental health struggles, why it's so expensive to be poor, the many ways that she has had to integrate in her life, staying in bed all day, the influence of Fiona Apple and Billie Holiday on her music, working with James Blake, Vulfpeck, Scary Pockets and how being a hairdresser is similar to being a therapist (but much less well paid).

The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast is a for-profit endeavor that is funded by you. I cannot pay royalties to artists because of the nature of podcast. It’s cost-prohibitive. You can read about that on my website. So I found a different way to give back. A portion of the money raised from compilation CD sales and from your Patreon donations is donated to Celtic Non-Profits. We already donated money to the Savannah Irish Festival to help some of the artists featured on this podcast. We are also sponsoring the Texas Scottish Festival in May. And now in September, we’re also sponsoring Middle Tennessee Highland Games & Celtic Festival. We have donated over $35,000 to Celtic Non-Profits. But I want to stress, that’s not me. That’s all of us. Everyone who supports this podcast is supporting Celtic culture through music. These festivals bring our musical heritage alive. So thank you for being a part of that. CELTIC PODCAST NEWS While you’re there, I want to ask you to post a review on Apple Podcasts. Right now, we are 37 reviews away from 1000. That’s incredible to think about especially considering I haven’t asked anyone to post a review in a long time. If you listen to podcasts, I want to recommend a couple that I enjoy and are Celtic in nature. Irish Music Stories is put out by Irish musician Shannon Heaton. She looks at the bigger stories behind traditional Irish music. It’s extremely well-produced and well worth subscribing Erin’s Isle is a short travel podcast. Erin brings you the delightful parts of Ireland in intriguing stories that’ll make you want to learn more. Her show is even syndicated on Aer Lingus and British Airways. It’s that good. And a lot of fun! If you want more St Patrick’s Day music, check out the St Patrick’s Day podcast. It’s a 7-part series I released years ago. It’s music with minimal chatting. I searched music and found your podcast - my first! I love Celtic music having green blood in my veins and am a Ceili dancer who enjoys our Irish culture and community here in St. Paul MN. As I listen to this great music, I am digging out of a very cluttered home office. The upbeat music is keeping me going as I tackle this rather daunting task. No pics - nobody should see the mess I have!" Helen Withers emailed: "Hi from Helen Withers in Falcon, Colorado. We attended the Larkspur, Colorado Renaissance Festival in the last two years. We have repeatedly sat in the audience to see, sing with(from the audience) and enjoy a musical trio called "Music the Gathering Band" They have at least one CD, & recently finished at the Brevard RenFaire. You may like them for one of your podcasts." She sent another email: "Also, there's a band from one of the Carolina states, called Syr. We saw them live in Estes Park, Colorado & really enjoyed their music too. Thank you, Helen Withers in Falcon Colorado."

“We are so in a reactive mode, in our heads, trying to make meaning… we don't allow ourselves time just to slow down and notice what is happening right now.” ~Monica Martin The process of becoming who we are… Monica Martin is the woman you want with you whenever you're feeling uncertain. Her presence and incredibly soothing voice always give me the feeling that everything is going to be okay — or even better than okay. AND in this interview Monica shares how to tap into and trust that grounding, connected energy within yourself through meditation, visualization, “felt-sense” experiencing in your body, process art and… boxing! “Boxing has been one of THE biggest parts of my healing… it's so important that, especially now, people find a way to express their emotions in a physical activity… because it helps you actually transmute the emotions and it helps you find your own way of expression.” ~Monica Martin Connect with Monica… MonicaMartin.orgMonica's Facebook PageMonica's Facebook GroupYouTube Show Notes Galore: http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com Magic Page! Fresh off the airplane and rocking in a hotel lounge, Charpie joins Bill to break down episode 3 "The Law of Noncontradiction". Does this episode mean anything, does it matter, or are we all just particles floating endlessly until we collide? The guys talks about it as well as Watchamacallits, and Bill bowling and eating Pizza Patrol with Don Hertzfeld. We also connect Barraboo, Wisconsin, last season's Shakey Graves w/ Monica Martin soundtrack music, and so much more. It's a strange one folks. Settle in.
