British keyboardist and director Chad Kelly has a very long list of credits to his name. He has been living in Australia less than two years, but has already performed with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Victorian Opera, and with the Sydney and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras. Earlier this year, he joined Opera Australia. His commitment to historically informed performance practice has led him to perform with Sir John Elliot Gardiner and Trevor Pinnock, and his enduring collaboration with violinist Rachel Podger has recently culminated in them recording an album together of JS Bach's Goldberg Variations, due for release in 2023. He will be guest directing the Australian Haydn Ensemble for CPE Bach: Universe of Harmony, their final concert of the year, from the 11th to the 14th of December. In this conversation, Chad gives us a preview of the concert and his unique perspectives on historically informed performance practice, and he shares a diverse selection of works which have played different roles in his life.
Tom Service joins Rachel Podger and her violin for a walk in the Brecon Beacons to talk about her new album ‘Tutta Sola' which features lesser-known solo violin music of the 18th century. Rachel discusses the new musical discoveries she's made through making the album and what it means to play solo, and she treats us to some solo Bach live on a hillside. Tom talks to Ukrainian musicians and musical leaders about their musical life in Ukraine right now and how music and music-making is both an escape from the trauma of everyday life during the war, and a strong representation of Ukrainian national identity. We hear from conductor Ivan Cherednichenko at Lviv National Opera, Tetyana Kostorna at Lviv Philharmonic Orchestra, Sergey Didok at the National Operetta of Ukraine in Kyiv and pianist Antonii Baryshevskyi. Edward Dusinberre, violinist and leader of the Takacs Quartet, discusses his new book ‘Distant Melodies - Music in Search of Home' which explores ideas of home and exile through the lives and music of Elgar, Britten, Bartok and Dvorak, together with his own musical childhood in England and life as a touring musician living in America. Gabriella Di Laccio, soprano and Founder of Donne, Women in Music, joins Tom to look at the latest Equality & Diversity in Global Repetoire Report which reveals that only 7.7% of pieces performed by 111 orchestras worldwide in 2021/22, were written by women. Artistic Director at London Philharmonic Orchestra Elena Dubinets reflects on the findings and shares her vision for change. Producer: Matthew Dover

The surgeon Roger Kneebone tells Michael Berkeley how his work with tailors, lacemakers, Formula One teams, and musicians has transformed his understanding of medicine. Roger Kneebone began his career as a trauma surgeon in Soweto, operating on victims of stabbings and shootings, before working in a war zone in Namibia in the 1980s. Then he was a GP in Wiltshire for fifteen years before joining Imperial College London, where he is Professor of Surgical Education and Engagement Science. So with that impressive medical background it comes as something of a surprise to discover that he spends a lot of his professional life these days hanging out with craftspeople, engineers and musicians. He says: ‘When I started to think about surgery not only as an application of scientific knowledge but as a form of performance and craftsmanship, it made a lot of sense to find out what other performers and other craftsmen were doing and see what the connections were between their worlds and mine, rather than looking at the differences. It’s a whole new area of exploration and research.’ As a child Roger rebuilt a piano with his father and they formed a close bond over their mutual love of baroque music: Roger chooses Rachel Podger playing Bach’s Double Violin Concerto, and Handel’s 'As Steals the Morn'. Later he built a harpsichord from a kit when on call as a GP and we hear his harpsichord teacher Sophie Yates playing Couperin. And Roger chooses jazz from the American saxophonist Charles Lloyd, which leads him to consider the parallels between musical improvisation and the improvisation so often necessary during surgery. In the second of two programmes Rachel Podger, described by The Sunday Times as "Queen of the Baroque violin", shares the music that has helped to define her musical personality - much of it encountered during her childhood years in Kassel. Rachel's choices range from Tallis to Stravinsky via Monteverdi, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms and Vaughan Williams, and not forgetting her beloved Bach, of whose music she says "I don't think a day goes by when I don't play some or listen to some'. She talks engagingly about singing in her father's choir, The William Byrd Singers, where she absorbed Renaissance polyphony "by osmosis"; a memorable school-chamber orchestra trip round Eastern Europe in the declining years of the Ostblock; her love of Glenn Gould's idiosyncratic approach to the performance of Bach's music; her revelatory first encounter with 'authentic' performance practice; and much more.
In the first of two programmes, Rachel Podger, "queen of the Baroque violin", introduces some of the music that inspires her.
