Yes, we all know about the tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme, blah blah blah blah blah, but did you know these thirteen things about disney's animated Beauty and the Beast? So be our guest as we seperate man from monster and distract you from this subtly creepy kidnapping tale. Angela Lansbury, the voice of Mrs. Potts, thought that another character would be better suited to sing the ballad "Beauty and the Beast". The director asked her to make at least one recording to have for a backup if nothing else worked, and that one recording ended up in the film. The majority of the sculptures seen in the castle are different earlier versions of the Beast. In the 1930s and again in the 1950s, Walt Disney attempted to adapt Beauty and the Beast (1991) into a feature but could not come up with a suitable treatment, so the project was shelved. It wasn't until The Little Mermaid (1989) became hugely successful that they decided to try it a third time. In Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve's "The Story of Beauty and the Beast," - the original version of the tale - the prince was not turned into a beast for being selfish and unloving, but because he refused to marry his evil fairy godmother. The smoke seen during the transformation at the end is actually real smoke, not animated. It was originally used in The Black Cauldron (1985) and was re-used for Beauty and the Beast. Many scenes were storyboarded but never animated. Those include a scene where Gaston visits the asylum and a scene where the Beast is seen dragging the carcass of an animal he killed. Both were considered too gruesome for the film and the ideas were dropped. However, an animal's skeleton can just barely be seen in the corner shadows of the West Wing. Jackie Chan performed the voice acting and singing for the Beast in the Chinese (Mandarin) dub of the film. By the time Alan Menken and Howard Ashman won an Academy Award for Best Original Song, Ashman had already died. Ashman's longtime romantic partner, Bill Lauch, accepted the award on his behalf. HIDDEN MICKEY: At seperate moments in the film, there are 3 droplets of water, a trio of stones, and three circles that appear in the snow that form the Classic Mickey head. The role of Cogsworth was written specifically with John Cleese in mind but he turned it down. Computer technology was considered for the rooftop fight and the forest chase, but the primitive state of the technology only allowed time to use it for the ballroom scene. The film was previewed at the New York Film Festival in September 1991 in a "Work-In-Progress" format. Approximately 70% of the footage was the final color animation. The other 30% consisted of storyboard reels, rough animation pencil tests, clean-up animation pencil tests, and computer animation tests of the ballroom sequence. According to producer Don Hahn, the audience gave the film a strong, overwhelming standing ovation. In 2001 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Beauty and the Beast, they added an extra seven minutes to the final film which included a scene where the Castle is preparing for the dinner and dance. The Disney productions got all the original animating and drawing group to complete this scene, which is available to watch on the 2001 Disney DVD and VHS, and any further re release onward. I recently visited my alma mater, Carson High School, where the Drama department presented Disney's "Beauty and the Beast." It was a great closing performance and I met some of the cast, members of the production team, and other wonderful people. I spoke with Director Marcia Barryte, and it is evident, through her dedication and passionate efforts, she helped put Carson High School back on the map with a much-needed Performing and Media Academy program. With the help and support of the parent volunteers, Principal, Dr. Windy Warren, and Los Angeles Unified School District Senior Executive Director of Arts in Education, Dr. Rory Pullens, the program continues to flourish and produce quality shows. More importantly, it has sparked the interests of many students, many who have never performed before, but who have discovered a newfound love for theater arts. Choreographer Ray Garcia (original Tony Award-winning Broadway musical "Rent") and Vocal Director Jolly Rodriguez talked about watching the students grow from Day 1, reflecting on how much they have improved and flourished, and more importantly, how much the program has boosted confidence levels. Theater Arts also promotes the importance of academics. As with any curricular activity, students must maintain a certain GPA in order to participate, therefore education is clearly the number one priority at Carson High School. I am proud of Carson High School! It was here I began my musical theater career starring as Kim McAfee in "Bye Bye Birdie" and Daisy Mae in "Li'l Abner." I was also involved in Vocal Jazz, a small vocal group that performed in several programs and participated in competitions. I am especially proud to have been a part of a reputable sisterhood called the "Bannergirls," a 12-member auxiliary squad who carried the shiny "CARSON" sign proudly at parades and performed at all football games during pre- and halftime shows. Together with the entire Carson High School Blue Thunder Marching Band and Auxiliary Units, we competed and won championships in regional and statewide competitions. Returning to the campus to watch the closing performance of "Beauty and the Beast" brought back wonderful memories of my time at Carson High School. They were some of the best years of my life. Without the arts and music programs, I wouldn't have made lifelong friends. I likely would not have pursued my passion and love for musical theater in college and thereafter. It goes without saying how truly important the Performing Arts and Media Academy at Carson High School is necessary and valuable in helping to transform lives! Please support the arts! Brenda grew up as the youngest of 5 children. Her mother helped foster her genuine interest in art and eventually Brenda attended CalArts where she eventually met her husband, fellow filmmaker, Kevin Lima. Once she graduated, Brenda landed a position with Disney where she was a story trainee on the Disney animated film The Little Mermaid. She was one of several key story artists on Disney's Beauty and the Beast, where she worked closely with future Disney director Roger Allers to define many of the key sequences and motifs used in the film. She later served as head of story, the first woman to do so in an animated feature film, for Disney's animated classic The Lion King. Brenda also worked in story and development for other Disney animated films such as The Rescuers Down Under, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Fantasia 2000. She joined DreamWorks Animation at its inception in the fall of 1994. She co-directed the Disney·Pixar film Brave, becoming the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Grierson is out for a second consecutive week after having a polyp removed, so we are delighted to welcome the incomparable Christy Lemire, of RogerEbert.com and "What the Flick?" and so many other places to be our guest host this week. She is one of the best film critics on the planet, and without question the nicest. She is also so much smarter than either Grierson or Leitch. So Christy and Will dig into the remake/reboot/rewhatever of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast," and then Will asks Christy about "T2: Trainspotting," and whether it will mess with one's affections for the original. But don't fret: We still have some Grierson, with our previously taped Reboot segments. In those, we discuss cultural touchstone "Easy Rider," man, and we tackle '80s cult hit "Repo Man." Timestamps: 7:30 "Beauty and the Beast" 28:40 "T2: Trainspotting" 42:10 "Easy Rider" 1:01:36 "Repo Man" We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or griersonleitch@newrepublic.com. (We're doing a mailbag show after the new year, so send us questions.) As always, give us a review on iTunes with the name of a movie you'd like us to review, and we'll discuss it on a later podcast. This month we decided to do something a little different with the show. I don't want to ruin the surprise, but it's probably one of my favorite episodes thus far. And I want to give a special shout-out to our guest, Mette of Lime Reviews and Strawberry Confessions, for being willing to go that extra mile for the show to make it happen. I also have to give it up to my co-host Pat, who not only had to sing his songs while sick, but also pulled himself out of bed at 5 AM to record the regular part of the show. And it still turned out great. So yes, this month, we're tackling Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

It's not a new film, but it's one we missed and really wanted to see. "Midnight In Paris" is Woody Allen's 41st film, and by some accounts, one of his best. Even Quentin Tarantino picked it as his favorite film of 2011. We also got to see the re-release of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" in 3-D, which includes a new animated short, "Tangled Ever After."

Disney's Beauty and the Beast
Yes, we all know about the tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme, blah blah blah blah blah, but did you know these thirteen things about disney's animated Beauty and the Beast? So be our guest as we seperate man from monster and distract you from this subtly creepy kidnapping tale. 13. Angela Lansbury, the voice of Mrs. Potts, thought that another character would be better suited to sing the ballad "Beauty and the Beast". The director asked her to make at least one recording to have for a backup if nothing else worked, and that one recording ended up in the film. 12. The majority of the sculptures seen in the castle are different earlier versions of the Beast. 11. 10. In Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve's "The Story of Beauty and the Beast," - the original version of the tale - the prince was not turned into a beast for being selfish and unloving, but because he refused to marry his evil fairy godmother. 9. The smoke seen during the transformation at the end is actually real smoke, not animated. It was originally used in The Black Cauldron (1985) and was re-used for Beauty and the Beast. 8. 7. Jackie Chan performed the voice acting and singing for the Beast in the Chinese (Mandarin) dub of the film. 6. By the time Alan Menken and Howard Ashman won an Academy Award for Best Original Song, Ashman had already died. Ashman's longtime romantic partner, Bill Lauch, accepted the award on his behalf. 5. HIDDEN MICKEY: At seperate moments in the film, there are 3 droplets of water, a trio of stones, and three circles that appear in the snow that form the Classic Mickey head. 4. The role of Cogsworth was written specifically with John Cleese in mind but he turned it down. 3. Computer technology was considered for the rooftop fight and the forest chase, but the primitive state of the technology only allowed time to use it for the ballroom scene. 2. 1.
