Today, I am thrilled to announce my episode with star of stage and screen Annie Golden. Tune in to hear some of the stories of her legendary career, including being discovered by Milos Forman at CBGB's, how Marc Shaiman played her HAIR audition, why LEADER OF THE PACK didn't work on Broadway, how her role in ASSASSINS was inspired by Kate Bush, learning from Colleen Dewhurst during AH, WILDERNESS!, rehearsing with Kathleen Freeman for THE FULL MONTY, recording demos for HAIRSPRAY, being directed by Howard Ashman in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, workshopping BROADWAY BOUNTY HUNTER at the West Bank Cafe, performing with Veanne Cox in NATIONAL LAMPOON'S CLASS OF '86, and so much more. Don't miss this in-depth conversation with a theater veteran.
Annie Golden's career has hit on almost every creative endeavor there is. She starts out in the 70s fronting the punk/new wave band The Shirts who are making waves in the CBGB scene with Blondie, Television and the rest. The band released three good albums, but none of them really took off. Then, one fateful night, director Milos Foreman goes to their show and immediately decides to cast her in his new movie Hair. This kicks off her acting career (both on the big and small screens as well as Broadway) that has never let up. She might be best known these days for her role as the mute inmate Norma on Orange is the New Black. The Shirts have released a couple more albums in the 2000s with different vocalists, but Annie lends her voice to a new single, "Move On Groove On" that's a tribute to a close friend. Her spirit is infectious. Enjoy! www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
We have reached another Don Bluth animation classic! The Pebble and The Penguin. Another cult classic that 90s babies and kids hold near and dear to their hearts! The Pebble and the Penguin is a 1995 American independent animated musical comedy-adventure film directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman. The film stars the voices of Martin Short, Jim Belushi, Tim Curry, and Annie Golden. Based on the true life mating rituals of the Adélie penguins in Antarctica, the film focuses on a timid, stuttering penguin named Hubie who tries to impress a beautiful penguin named Marina by giving her a pebble that fell from the sky and keep her from the clutches of an evil penguin named Drake who wants Marina for himself. Towards the end of production, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer significantly changed the film, forcing Don Bluth and Gary Goldman to leave their film and demand to have their names taken off the film. The two would later start working at Fox Animation Studios. The film was released in the United States on April 12, 1995, by MGM/UA Distribution Co., receiving negative reviews from critics and being a box office bomb, grossing only $3.9 million against a $28 million budget. It is the final film to be produced by Sullivan Bluth Studios before the studio went bankrupt and ceased operations.
The amazingly talented star of stage (Hair, Broadway Bounty Hunter, Into the Woods) and screen (Miami Vice, Cheers, Orange is the New Black), Annie Golden, blows our minds with her stories! Annie talks about how singing with her band, The Shirts at CBGB's in the 70s, led to her being discovered by Miloš Forman, who cast her in Hair. This launched a career on Broadway and a solo singing career which led to her having a song (“Hang Up the Phone”) featured on the Sixteen Candles soundtrack. From there, she pivoted to the small and big screens with roles in 80s classics like Baby Boom, Cheers, and Desperately Seeking Susan. She has most recently been in Orange is the New Black as the lovable mute, Norma Romano and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as Marge. She was also the special guest of Phish's most recent NYE performance at Madison Square Garden. We were thrilled to have her join us. The character of Megan got cut from The Black Suits and along with her went her big number: "Joey is a Punk Rocker." Here, it makes a dramatic return nw, as sung by the incomparable Annie Golden, a woman who truly embodies the ragtagness and youthful energy of rock and roll music. Joe wrote this song during his Senior year of NYU Undergrad, a time when he was less hard on himself in regards to perfect rhyme. http://BPN.fm/Album to get the music. The 17th century. The English Civil War. Whitehead, a man of letters, maker of lace, and self-described coward, is tasked with finding and arresting the colleague and rival alchemist who stole his master's papers. He enlists the aid of Cutler, a soldier who claims he can take them to a nearby alehouse, and two deserters, the wily Jacob and dull-minded Friend. Upon arriving at Cutler's destination – not the alehouse, but a wide open field strewn with hallucinogenic mushrooms, the group locates the alchemist, O'Neil. But instead of taking in his man, Whitehead, along with Jacob and Friend, find themselves O'Neil's prisoners. And as Whitehead becomes a literal tool in O'Neil's plot to seek out a deposit of gold in the field, this one-time familiar place quickly turns strange and otherworldly. We want to tell you about a podcast you'll like if you like Play On! It's a musical fiction podcast called It Makes A Sound, and it's about a daughter and a mother and the origin story of an unlikely cult sensation. Season one follows Deirdre Gardner on a quest to revive the sound of a generation off a busted cassette tape from 1992, and wake up her decrepit hometown of Rosemary Hills Golf Course Community to all that's been forgotten. In Season two, which just launched, the town of Rosemary Hills is in foreclosure and Deirdre is struggling to care for her mother in a nursing home. It Makes a Sound stars Jacquelyn Landgraf and features Annie Golden of The Shirts, with original music by Vin Cacchione of Caged Animals and Soft Black. And cool fact: The original soundtrack album, Wim Faros: the Attic Tape, was initiated and financed entirely on Patreon by the listeners, and charted in its first week due entirely to word-of-mouth from fans. Enjoy an episode of It Makes a Sound now, and find more episodes on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and itmakesasound.com!

It’s been quite a journey. Holly and Chris look back at their Carrie adventure and try and answer some burning questions. We ask an expert, author of ‘Flop Musicals of the Twentieth Century’ Stephen Purdy, if Carrie really can be defined as a flop compared to some prominent recent mega-failures. We also find out from writer Peter Michael Marino, creator of the doomed ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’ musical, what it’s like to have your new musical trashed (FYI: we saw it twice and had a great time), plus the legendary Alice Ripley also shares her experiences of being in well-loved musicals which were hit by premature closure, like ‘American Psycho’ and ‘Side Show’. And finally - a post mortem. Where did it go wrong? Who was to blame? Could Carrie have been fixed? Can you even do horror on stage? Can we just do this as a job forever? Plus, we leave the last word to our gang of original cast members to tell us how this funny little musical changed their lives forever. With an epic standing ovation on closing night, and urban legends already forming about its turbulent journey to the stage, Carrie the Musical had become an instant cult classic. If you’d missed Carrie’s all-too-brief run on Broadway, you just weren’t ‘in’. But the show was over and - like most flops - it should have slowly faded into oblivion. But, it didn’t. We track down the army of fans determined to keep Carrie alive in the ‘wilderness years’ that followed. We uncover the surprising truth about exactly where those bootleg videos came from, and hear from Tony-nominated composer Joe Iconis (‘Be More Chill’) about his teenage Carrie addiction - including a terrifying phone call from a familiar name. We also meet David Cerda, creator of drag parody ‘S’Carrie the Musical’, and talk to the people who threw caution to the wind and mounted unauthorised productions of the musical everybody thought was dead and buried. Did they get away with it? Friends of Carrie - join us on our social channels and share your feedback! Annie Golden got her start in the 1970s as the lead singer of the CBGB headlining band, The Shirts. In the 1970s director Milos Forman “discovered” Annie Golden singing at CBGBs with her band The Shirts. He cast her in his 1979 film adaptation of Hair. She has been working and thriving ever since. Click here to see Annie Golden shared her "work station" which contains her "fancy schmancy" microphone to record the new Bleeding Love podcast. You may know Golden from playing Norma Romano in Orange Is the New Black. You may know her from countless roles on and off Broadway. Her vast credits include Hair, Leader of the Pack, Ah, Wilderness!, On the Town, The Full Monty, Xanadu, Violet, Assassins and Broadway Bounty Hunter. You may know her playing Jeannie Ryan from Milos Forman’s film adaptation of Hair. You may know her from Desperately Seeking Susan, Baby Boom, Longtime Companion, Strictly Business, Prelude to a Kiss, 12 Monkeys or I Love You Phillip Morris. Golden currently co-stars in the new Broadway Podcast Network series, Bleeding Love. The Post-Apocalyptic musical takes place in a world where it’s too dangerous to go outside. Golden stars with Rebecca Naomi Jones, Marc Kudisch, Sarah Stiles, Taylor Trensch and Tony Vincent Be More Chill composer Joe Iconis even wrote the musical Broadway Bounty Hunter as a love letter to Golden. (The original cast recording was just released last month, https://ghostlightrecords.lnk.to/broadwaybountyhunter). “She has been my muse,” says Iconis. “The thing that has always comes through is her authenticity. She is such a real New Yorker and so authentically herself. And I love that she has had such a wild life.” Produced in part by the Broadway Podcast Network. Learn more about your ad choices. Annie Golden is the bad-ass muse of composer Joe Iconis and his co-writers on BROADWAY BOUNTY HUNTER, a "spoofsploitation" musical that sends up b-movies of the 1970s and 1980s. She is a Broadway veteran with credits including HAIR, On The Town, The Full Monty, and Violet. She began singing in grade school, and went on to lead the punk band The Shirts before finding her way to the stage. Now most recognized as Normal Romano on Orange is the New Black, Annie is embracing her inner Action Hero as the star of Broadway Bounty Hunter at the Greenwich House Theater.

A sleepy story of a tribute of the “It Makes a Sound” podcast, in pinball form. (You can find all of our sponsors or become a patron on our website http://www.sleepwithmepodcast.com story starts at about 18:00) It Makes a Sound - http://www.nightvalepresents.com/itmakesasound/ It Makes a Sound Logo byDave Watt On Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/posts/album-liner-24335076 WIM FAROS: The Attic Tape -http://www.nightvalepresents.com/itmakesasound/ Featuring Jacquelyn Landgraf as Deirdre Gardner, and the voices of Annie Golden, Nate Weida,Melissa Mahoney, and Siobhan Fallon. Written and Co-Directed by Jacquelyn Landgraf, Co-Directed by Anya Saffir, Music composed by Nate Weida, Sound Design and Engineering by Vincent Cacchione, Logo by Dave Watt. The first season of It Makes A Sound tells the story of a ragtag group of neighbors who, after a cassette player destroys the only known of recording of local legend Wim Faros, set out to recreate his music from memory. The music in the show – original songs by show creator Jacqueline Landgraf and musical collaborator Nate Weida – were originally just sketches of what the songs could sound like. Throughout season one, dedicated fans of the show asked for an album. Instead of releasing the songs as they existed in the show, Landgraf and Weida worked with producer Vincent Cacchione to create fully-realized versions of the songs, to be released as a proper album. Their finished work, titled The Attic Tape, will be available via Bandcamp and iTunes later this January. The album also features the voices of cast members Annie Golden (Hair, Orange Is the New Black) and Melissa Mahoney (Solarplexus, The Pirate La Dee Da).The album was entirely funded through listener donations. The It Makes A Sound album Patreon page currently has 110 supporters. Many supporters will receive the digital album, and the most dedicated fans will receive a copy of the album on cassette.
