Welcome to the CavasShips Podcast with Christopher P. Cavas and Chris Servello…a weekly podcast looking at naval and maritime events and issues of the day – in the US, across the seas and around the world. This week…the recent sinking of a Chinese nuclear-powered submarine while under construction is one of several recent Chinese naval developments. Naval analyst and veteran submarine om Shugart is back with us to dive into multiple submarines, aircraft carriers and a growing and ever-more-menacing Chinese Coast Guard.
Andrew Parker chatted with WooSox reliever Chase Shugart from WooSox media day. Andrew talked to Shugart about getting a non-roster invitee to spring training and how his spring went and more.
Ed Hand & Andrew Parker are joined by Red Sox reliever Chase Shugart. Shugart spent the 2023 season in Worcester and talked about what his year was like pitching for the WooSox. We talked about a few Texas topics and who really owned the ping pong table in the clubhouse.
As China's military capabilities grow, discussions about the US posture in the Pacific often return to the question how large a force does the US need to deter or possibly confront the Chinese Navy? If China were to launch an attack on Taiwan, how do the US and Chinese navies match up?To find out, “Hot Wash” host John Sorensen speaks with Tom Shugart an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security. During his twenty-five years in the US Navy, Shugart served as a submarine warfare officer on both fast attack and ballistic missile submarines, including as commander of the attack submarine USS Olympia from 2013 to 2016. He also served on the Joint Staff as the principal officer responsible for nuclear strike planning, as well as in the Defense Department's Office of Net Assessment. ¿O no?

The Apple Disk ][ drive is a converted Shugart drive that has three power supplies: 5V, +12V and -12V. The 5V and 12V are for the motor control. Negative 12V is a bit of a pain to generate, but thankfully the -12V seems to only be used for biasing a trim potentiometer. So, we don't need a lot of current. Still, we do need to generate -12V, let's take inspiration from the classic MAX232 RS232 driver chip to find a charge pump converter! We churned through a big pile of testers and new designs this week: two IPS TFT displays with EYESPI connectors, the VL53L4CD time-of-flight sensor, the ESP32 QT Py, an OV2640/OV5640 camera breakout, and the ESP32-C3 QT Py. With a lot of our floppy work done and tested for both SAMD51 and RP2040, it's time to move from shugart 34 pin to Apple Disk ][ which uses a different 20 pin interface. The power supply and controlling technique is going to be different for this drive because to save costs they removed and simplified the drive control system. Visiting with Jonathan Shugart of B Charitable, an Alabama based nonprofit corporation. We talk about Donor Advised Funds and their benefit to both the donor and the recipients. B Charitable is a tax-exempt entity whose sole purpose is to house charitable gifting funds for individuals. In addition, the platform provides donors with financial peace of mind knowing that the funds collected on B Charitable can only then be donated to public charities. Different from other crowdfunding platforms, donations can not be spent by the individual collecting the donations. Jonathan also turns the table and questions Mickey about the Nonprofit Snapshot. We welcome support of the Nonprofit SnapCast via Patreon. We welcome your questions and feedback via The Nonprofit Snapshot website.
The People's Republic of China has risen over the past two decades to become the world's largest economy, when measured by purchasing power parity. As Chinese global economic interests and influence have expanded so, too, has the size and capability of the Chinese military. In this week's episode of Horns of a Dilemma, Thomas Shugart, adjunct senior fellow with the defense program at the Center for a New American Security, discusses the implications of growing Chinese military power. Shugart frames his discussion in terms of what he calls the "Malacca Dilemma": Since much of Chinese trade and almost all Chinese energy imports must flow through strategic chokepoints controlled by the U.S. Navy or its allies and partners, Chinese leaders want to be able to protect their interests in these vital regions. But the same capabilities that allow them to protect their trading interests also allow them to threaten, intimidate, and coerce other regional countries, and may give Chinese communist leaders the tools needed to challenge or change the global order that has defined the region for decades. This talk was given at the University of Texas, Austin, and jointly sponsored by the Strauss Center and the Clements Center at the University of Texas, Austin.

Have you ever wanted to set up a charitable foundation? Then you'll want to hear our interview with Jonathan Shugart, founder of B Charitable. Jonathan says he believes most people are fundamentally charitable, but often don't have the funds to set up a foundation, normally for the very rich who want to give, but also need a tax advantage. Now, anyone can do it. B Charitable is a convenient platform recognized by the IRS as a tax-exempt public charity, but without a minimum investment. In other words, it's not just for the rich any more, now anyone can decide how much they want to give, and fund, and get a tax deduction, too. Please tune in to our interview today, and hear how you can set up a lifetime of charitable giving for you and your family. And hear what motivated Jonathan to do it, too. It's really quite remarkable. #DeborahKobyltLIVE on all audio and video podcast platforms.

This special series of interviews is designed to help prepare college leaders for a future visioning activity taking place in Summer 2021. We are adding all of these interviews where the participants have allowed it for our entire College community to hear. In this episode, Sandy Shugart, President of Valencia College, shares his thoughts on the future of community college. Sandy spoke as both a member of our community college extended community as well as as a person nearing the end of his career which I believe lent a unique perspective. Thomas Shugart joined Jordan Schneider and I on another cross-over episode of the China Talk and Acquisition Talk podcasts. Thomas spent 25 years in the US Navy and is currently an adjunct senior fellow at CNAS. He argues that the Chinese justify preemptive strikes to be defensive in nature if they are challenged in the political realm, such as Taiwan declaring independence. This possibility is made more dangerous considering the rise of China's military, particularly in long-range missiles, bombers, and navy. The expansion of the PLA Navy over the last five years as been nearly identical to the legendary 1980s Reagan build-up. "For all the talk of them being next generation swarming and unmanned," Thomas said, "they sure are bending a lot of iron building ships." Thomas notes that the United States' response has been primarily the dispersion of forces to avoid concentration in large bases or carrier groups. But he doesn't see the demise of multi-purpose manned systems like destroyers and bombers. The systems are survivable in a contested communications environment. Coupled with greater operational experience and warfighter initiative, this provides the US an advantage. However, the advantage can quickly dissipate if leaders make decisions from the wrong lessons. We close the podcast discussing the computer game EVE and the military lessons that can be drawn from it. EVE is a massively open online game where tens of thousands of people self-organize into corporations that compete against each other in battles using spaceships, rail guns, electronic warfare, and many other capabilities. Actions in the universe are complex and the corporations are sophisticated. We compare the decentralized complexity of EVE to the relative simplicity and centralization found in StarCraft and Ender's Game. This podcast was produced by Eric Lofgren. Soundtrack by urmymuse: "reflections of u". You can follow us on Twitter @AcqTalk and find more information at AcquisitionTalk.com.

Hamid Hassanzadeh in conversation with Bailey Shugart and Erick Carcamo. Workshop information: https://parametric-architecture.com/the-illusion-of-form-paacademy/ One week online workshop by PAACADEMY in collaboration with ALLBLACKFORM. The main aspiration of this workshop is to precisely develop a critical argument based on an individual research, which will translate into pure geometrical-formal exploration; the format will be an ongoing deskcrit symposium with the participants, meeting them and discussing their individual architectural project, along with daily tutorials to progress their knowledge of the software techniques. Rather than assignments, the research will be divided into stages and strategies. Based on an image, the participants will develop an expertise in a specific Topological (Geometrical) territory; this territory will emerge for a hybrid between 3 main intellectual fields, from the following menu: Structure, Skin and Mass.

The floppy disk was one of the greatest breakthroughs in computing. It helped spin up the software industry with a format that endured for decades. And in some cases, it’s conserved treasures once thought to be lost forever. Before floppy disks came along, computing was weighed down by punch cards and magnetic tapes. Steven Vaughan-Nichols describes the magnitude of the changes brought by the floppy disk. Dave Bennet explains how the need for permanent storage, which was also easily mailable, led to the first 8-inch drives. George Sollman recalls how he was tasked with creating a smaller floppy, and what unexpected sources inspired the next design. And when Sollman showed it to the Homebrew Computer Club, a couple of this season’s usual suspects asked him to see more. And the rest is history. Or is it? Matthew G. Kirschenbaum points out that floppy disks are still in use in some unexpected places. And Jason Scott and Tony Diaz tell us how they brought some source code from the sneakernet to the cloud. If you want to read up on some of our research on floppy disks, you can check out all our bonus material over at redhat.com/commandlineheroes. You’ll find extra content for every episode. Today’s podcast features none other than Paula Shugart, who is the beloved president of the Miss Universe organization, as every fan of the pageant knows. With more than 30 years of experience in the television industry, Paula Shugart has been a driving force in entertainment television production for domestic and international audiences. As president of the Miss Universe Organization (MUO), and producer of the Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants, Paula oversees all business transactions and is responsible for the production of the live, worldwide telecasts each year.Paula’s father was an Admiral in the US Navy, and she says her childhood really helped to prepare her for her current role as the president of an international organization. She believes that her global travels left her with a deep appreciation and understanding of the world’s cultural diversity as well as its commonality. But, as much as she loved being a “Navy Brat”, when it came time to attend college, Paula says that she just wanted to go someplace new…without a Navy base. She had grown tired of living in a coastal city like San Diego and just wanted to live in a location that was different and challenging. She found that new and different place in the Midwest. Paula chose Ohio University, which consistently ranks as one of the top schools in the country for television communication. Paula graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1981, with a BS in Communications, focusing on journalism and production, which was absolutely the right career path for her.In 1982, after finishing college, Paula packed her bags and headed from Ohio to the center of television production: Sunny California! After only five days in Los Angeles, she met Kevin Bright (who was the Executive Producer of the TV show “Friends”) and he gave Paula her first big break, and that meeting began her career in production. From 1982 to 2002 Paula was busy making quite a name for herself, and success seemed to come naturally to the Admiral’s personable daughter. She was based in Los Angeles and developed a specialty in live television production while working on some of the world’s largest productions: the “Academy Awards,” “American Music Awards,” “Golden Globes,” “International Rock Awards,” and “President Clinton’s 50th Birthday Celebration,” among many others. She also served as a producer on the original talent competition, “Star Search” for seven years, as well as a multitude of other programs including the Lifetime Special “The Age of the Female Icon,” which garnered a Cable Ace Award nominationPaula became so accomplished at handling the monumental task of producing major events that she got involved in the music industry. Paula was involved in producing two legendary artist’s television productions: Madonna on her “Blond Ambition Tour” and the Rolling Stones on their “Steel Wheels Tour.” And, if that wasn’t impressive enough, she even forayed into the world of daytime television as Supervising Producer for ABC’s talk show “Mike & Maty” and then went on to produce the pilot for the highly popular “Donny and Marie Show” for Columbia Television. Paula is an active member of the Director’s Guild of America and the Producers Guild of America and has served as a Commissioner to Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Latin Media and Entertainment Commission. She was also named a member of the Women's Leadership Board at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. This was an especially relevant and important accolade for Paula, as her election was based on her professional accomplishments and demonstrated commitment to women and girls. To learn more about Paula Shugart her work with the Miss Universe organization and beyond, listen to this week’s episode. The Osborne 1 with Lee Felsenstein Welcome to episode 91 of the Floppy Days Podcast for May, 2019. In the timeline for personal computer introductions, we are now in the year 1981. For this episode we are going to be talking about the Osborne 1. The Osborne 1 was the first commercially successful portable microcomputer, released on April 3, 1981 by Osborne Computer Corporation (OCC). It was powered by the Z80 CPU at a blazing 4MHz, weighed 24.5 lb, cost US$1,795, and ran the CP/M operating system. It was powered from a wall socket, as it had no on-board battery, but is a portable device since it can be hand-carried when packed. The computer shipped with a large bundle of software that was almost equivalent in value to the machine itself. The Osborne 1 was the brain child of Adam Osborne and was brilliantly engineered by Lee Felsenstein. So, who better to have help me talk about the machine than Lee Felsenstein himself! For this show, we’re going to spend some time with Lee talking about the history surrounding the Osborne 1. Finally, Lee will leave us and I will cover the usual computer topics such as tech specs, emulators, Web sites, and more. Dr. Sandy Shugart, President of Valencia College, joins the Hunters for a conversation on education and the importance of student involvement in the community.
On this episode, I’m joined by not one, but two industry insiders who are going to give us a behind-the-scenes tour of the world of arbitrage, which simply involves buying low and selling high. Jon Shugart is an entrepreneur at heart and a computer programmer by trade. He’s also a master at webinar marketing who was on one of the very earliest episodes of Marketing Speak. Luke Sample is a serial internet entrepreneur and black hat SEO. Together, they are the co-creators of BookTrades Biz. If you’re ready to learn how to build an internet empire from anywhere in the world, this is the episode for you! Find Out More About Jon and Luke Here: BookTrades Biz Jon Shugart Jon Shugart on Twitter Jon Shugart on Facebook Jon Shugart on LinkedIn Luke Sample Luke Sample on Facebook Luke Sample on LinkedIn In This Episode: [02:02] - Jon and Luke talk about arbitrage as a revenue model and how it compares to affiliate marketing. [05:21] - Arbitrage has been around for a long time as far as the internet is concerned, Stephan points out. Luke then talks about whether this kind of arbitrage is still around, and Jon points out that there was a big push over the last few years to arbitrage native ads. [07:30] - Jon defines native advertising for listeners who may not be familiar with the term, then finishes off his idea about native ads. [10:53] - Stephan gives an example of a non-obvious thing that you can arbitrage. [13:15] - Luke tells the story of how he and Jon got into the textbook industry. [19:00] - Is it possible to send purchased books directly to the place offering trade-in, or do you have to take possession of it? [20:25] - Jon talks about how long it takes to make a decent income off of the textbook market, considering each transaction is for relatively low amounts. [25:00] - We hear about whether Jon and Luke have friends or family members doing textbook arbitrage since it’s basically a guaranteed way to make money. [29:48] - Why did Luke and Jon turn this into a service rather than just building an arbitrage business themselves? [33:04] - The key for Luke and Jon is that they’re continually innovating, Luke points out, which makes it a win for everybody. [34:21] - We hear whether Luke and Jon offer a prep service for their customers. [37:57] - Jon gives a rundown of what they offer listeners, in response to Stephan’s point that one needs a fair amount of information upfront. [40:11] - The program has a secret Facebook group where people have a sense of camaraderie and generosity that’s unusual in other industries. [42:11] - Is there an MLM component to the program? [44:10] - We hear about the next step for a listener who is interested in learning more or taking part in this program. If you’re interested, head to this link! Your browser does not support the audio element. RoadBlock 1%er grew up in Jacksonville, Florida’s Sin City neighborhood. An admitted “adrenaline junkie” in his early years, he raced on NASCAR-sanctioned tracks in Florida and Georgia with many of the great drivers from that era, including Wayne Shugart, the Ezells, Eddie MacDonald, Rance Phillips, Herb Spivey and Tiny Lund.Fast cars led to fast motorcycles, and RoadBlock joined the Outlaws Motorcycle Club in 1971. In the years to follow, he became president of several Florida chapters, then Regional Boss, living the high-speed 1970s lifestyle of sex, drugs and rock and roll. That lifestyle caught up with him and he wound up serving thirty years in federal prison, beginning in Leavenworth U.S. Penitentiary. As one Judge declared, they wanted to make an example of him to discourage others from joining motorcycle clubs. Ironically, even from a prison cell, RB became well known in the U.S. and internationally because of his ability to survive, and his "never give up" attitude. As for the motorcycle clubs the judge hoped to eliminate, they are stronger today than ever.In the years following 9/11, RB began to receive correspondence from young military people. Their courage, despite the traumatic physical and mental injuries they sustained, profoundly affected RB. These vets returned home to a world they no longer felt comfortable in, just as many Vietnam vets did in RB's era. RB became an outspoken advocate for disabled vets, and the rights they were due.In December 2009, RB finally reached his mandatory release date, and was allowed to go home after almost 30 years in prison. He is now writing a fiction biker series set in the 1970s about the adventures of military vet Joe Wilson. Struggling with PTSD in a time when Vietnam vets were reviled and disrespected, Joe's rise to power in the notorious Regents Motorcycle Club shows one man's attempt to find his place in a changed world.
