We have another international episode with Andy out in Malaysia this week. Appropriately, with it being our 180th episode, we cover darts for the first time with Luke Littler becoming, at 17, the youngest player to ever win the PDC World Darts Championship. We have all the latest from football's Premier League, with Forest continuing their great form, as well as a preview of the FA Cup 3rd Round, with an update on how our “Road to Wembley” teams are looking. In Test Cricket it was the 5th and final test in the series between Australia and India, and it served up as much drama as the previous matches in the series. And in Women's Cricket, we look forward to the start of the Women's Ashes- the Washes – that kicks off this weekend with the one-day part of the multi-format series. Staying in Australia, we preview the Australian Tennis Open that starts this weekend, with us running the rule over some of the main contenders. In NFL, we now have the play off places finalised, with Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs earning byes for topping their conferences, as teams look to progress through the knock out rounds to the Super Bowl final on February 9th. And we have the latest from our Doddie Aid efforts, with updates not just from the Null and Void league, but also across the four national teams.

Happy New Year to all our listeners! We kick off with a quick reflection on the festive season and a review of excellent cheese boards! We get into cricket with the 2 tantalising test matches, between Australia & India and South Africa & Pakistan proving that test cricket still has plenty of excitement to offer fans. And in Get a Grip we have a swipe at Indian poster boy Virat Kohli after his unnecessary barging into Australian debutant Sam Konstas. In Rugby Union we bring you the latest from a full, high-scoring premiership schedule, and a world record crowd for a women's club game between Harlequins &Leicester in the Big Game at Twickenham. In Tennis the build up has started for the Australian Open, with qualifying underway and Nick Kyrgios speaking out about the doping charges facing both the men's and women's world number ones. In NFL there's just a handful of play off spots left after the penultimate round of the regular season – so we run the rile over the teams that are already into the Superbowl play offs and those chasing the final spot in each division. Finally we give a plug to Doddie Aid that takes place each January. Listeners can sign up via www.doddieaid.com and not only get active in January, but also raise funds and support for the MND community. If you want to take on Tony and Andy, then once signed up in the App, join the Null & Void league to see who wins bragging rights this January! Our first guest of 2025 is our Football Correspondent, Billy Carr. Billy joins us at the halfway point of the Premier League season to look at what's happening at the top and bottom of the table, where the surprises have come from and what impact the multitude of games over the festive season has had on the table as we reach the turn. A fantastic episode to kick off 2025!

We kick off this week with the Boat Race, where Cambridge overcame long odds, a collapsed stroke, finish line appeals and unsafe E-Coli levels to triumph over Oxford in both the men's and women's races. In the Women's 6 Nations there were wins for England, France and Italy – whilst in the Premiership there were timekeeping errors at Quins, Saints went top against Sarries and Newcastle were confirmed as this year's wooden spoon winners. It was the Women's League Cup Final in football, where Arsenal beat Chelsea 1-0, but the game was overshadowed by the on field collapse of Arsenal's Frida Maanum – thankfully she was cleared later by medics. In Miami, Jannik Sinner's triumph meant he becomes the first Italian to be in the top two of tennis' world rankings, whilst in the women's event it was a home win for Florida's Danielle Collins. We then have a new variant of a sport-Indoor Triathlon – as well as bringing you all the latest from golf, rugby league, cricket and netball. Our guest this week is Doug Haggart – a true local hero. Doug shares his lifelong passion for rugby, from starting as a youngster to the multiple hats he has worn as a volunteer at Wallingford RFC. He also talks through the great work Wallingford are doing in growing the game at all levels-including being one of the first four teams in the county to spearhead SEND rugby-as well as the fantastic support the club give for Doddie Aid and other local charities and events. A great guest to chat with.

As ever an absolute pleasure to have the force of nature that is Rob Wainwright back on for a chat. We catch up of course on all things Doddie Aid, particularly his latest made challenge when he'll be cycling from Murrayfield to Rome for the Italy v Scotland game on 8th March! We also learn of a new drink of Norfolk Nog and some chaos over in Coll due to it along with sizing up Scotland's 6 Nations chances ahead of what turned out to be a wild opening weekend win! Also touch on potential plans for Doddie Aid 2025 already, and how we can "awaken the Kraken" that is Team Glasgow for a shot at the title :) Massive tip of the cap to all who've been involved in another awesome Doddie Aid effort both for the miles and money raised. It all goes to helping the efforts of those trying to find treatments and ultimately a cure for MND.
This is the penultimate episode of this seasons Doddie Aid campaign, only fitting that we have a sit down with our favourite Scotland International the one and only Zander Fagerson. We manage to cover everything from fitting in his Dobbie Dook around a family lunch, our Doddie Aid miles to all things Scotland in this years 6 Nations Championship but most importantly we may have to arrange a Back Bar testimonial for the Zander given his appearance numbers. As always a pleasure to chat with Zander and wishing him all the best of the 6 Nations this year, am sure he'll make us proud.Have a listen and hear how our Back Bar league is shaping up with the Doddie Aid miles and who is dragging behind the rest of the pack.
It's hitting mid-season in Doddie Aid 2024 so the lads caught up with Doddie Aid and Team Glasgow stalwart, and the man with the voice behind some of Scotland's Euro 2024 qualifying iconic moments, Rory Hamilton. We hear how he's getting on with his miles, a suggestion, nay plea, for difficulty bonus miles to be introduced and thoughts of Doddie Aid 2025 going worldwide...With the six nations coming up we get some thoughts on Scotland's chances there and of course some Euro 2024 chat. Perhaps more specifically John McGinn chat, but same same. Of course the obligatory speed round wraps things up, so be sure to give it a listen and as always, be a friend and tell a friend. Not just about the pod, but particularly please help spread the good word of Doddie Aid and the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation.

It's almost that time of year again and with Doddie Aid 2024 fast approaching we welcomed the new Team Glasgow captain, Eilidh Barbour, to the pod! Great catching up with Eilidh and finding out a bit more on her involvement, and big transfer to Team Glasgow in the Doddie Aid offseason. The lads embark on a bit of a recruitment drive to see if we can rope in some of her broadcasting pals, talk through some possible goals for the challenge and of course round things off with our speed round. Have a listen, share to your hearts content and please please sign up for Doddie Aid at www.doddieaid.com where you can pick other teams, but you know west is best!
The lads are back after a brief hiatus, and make their first foray into the world of professional golf, as they are joined by Scottish golfer, Richie Ramsay. A great insight into touring the globe with a bag of golf sticks, the idea of a Golf Rage Cam, and a return of the usual Heroes and Zeros/ Speedround gets the lads back into the swing (swing...see what we did there? Golf? Cool) of things, with Doddie Aid creeping up on us in Jan 2024
We're truly honoured to be joined by a man so respected that he has his own statue outside Wembley Stadium, the one, the only - Martin Offiah. Martin is the highest scoring rugby league player of all time with an incredible 501 tries to his name, but he started out playing union for England 7s and finished his career playing under Warren Gatland for Wasps. He treats us to 30 minutes of the greatest stories from both on and off the field, from Shaun Edwards in his y-fronts to Andy Farrell in the sauna to battling racism from his own fans - this interview has it all! --------- WANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL THIS Q4? We're truly honoured to be joined by Scotland's highest try scorer, a 3 times British & Irish Lion and a man who is as much fun on the pitch as he is off it. In his first long format interview since he retired, Hoggy sits down with us and shares countless incredibly hilarious and loose stories from throughout his career, from breaking his nose on his toilet bowl whilst throwing up to abusing Eddie Jones on the piss in Monaco and much more. He also takes us through what it's like to be bollocked by Gregor Townsend, why he decided to retire at such a young age and Archie asks him a if a certain rumour doing the rounds in Clapham is true. -------------------- BUY SAMURAI CLAPHAM FALCONS STASH NOW! It's finally here - after 150 Episodes we've managed to get on one of our greatest ever guests in the man, myth and legend - Mathieu Bastareaud! He does not hold back on any controversial tales, opening up on an epic career which saw him become a triple european champion and a global sporting icon, but mixed in with a fair bit of controversy. For being dropped for partying too hard, using his local police force as a taxi service, being forced to shower in front of his owner as an 18 year old, causing an international dispute between New Zealand and France when he lied about being attacked, his parents being abused and much more- Basta finally opens up about a career as one of France's most high profile sportsman. ------ BUY SAMURAI CLAPHAM FALCONS STASH NOW! We're honoured to be joined by a legend of the game in Stephen Donaldson, a man who famously kicked the winning points in the 2011 World Cup Final, having been called up to the squad a few days prior. Beaver had been dropped by the All Blacks for the World Cup and so decided to go on a 3 months long piss up and fishing trip across NZ, where he put on a lot of weight and decided to turn his back on watching or following the World Cup. But one evening he returned from the river, drunk as always, and found a missed call from the NZ manager, they'd lost both Dan Carter and the other 2 reserve fly halfs to injury and he was being called into the WC squad for the final. He ends up kicking the winning points in that final and off the back of it has had a feature length movie made about his life 'The Kick', got countless huge sponsorship deals, his own radio show, tv documentaries and the rest. This is his incredible story. ----------------------------------------- BUY SAMURAI CLAPHAM FALCONS STASH NOW! Today we're joined by a World Cup winner, a Sprinbok legend, a test centurion and the highest scoring centre in the history of the sport in Jean De Villiers. He lifts the lid on his incredible career; from his school days facing a horrific illegal initiation for his cricket team, the highs of winning the World Cup in 2007, partying with Nelson Mandela, the lows of losing to Japan in 2015 and getting abused constantly in the butchers, his thoughts on why England are so shit and SA so good and his best Clapham memories. We also hear about an incredibly loose celebration in 2004 for the Tri Nations, an accidental break in to his neighbours house in Ireland after an all nighter, his shocking injury problems, life after rugby and most importantly why he absolutely despises Archie!! --------------- BUY SAMURAI CLAPHAM FALCONS STASH NOW! We kick back into gear after Doddie Aid by welcoming former professional rugby player, american football kicker, and founder of Leader Kicking Academy, Tadhg Leader to The Back Bar. It's a great chat through Tadhg's journey from the Connacht Academy all the way to starting his own kicking academy, via rugby and american football stints in Italy, USA, Canada and Poland! A well travelled man, and as you can imagine some interesting stories to go with that. Heroes and Zeros returns, but in a slightly tweaked format this time to showcase our "skills" for Tadhg. Not sure any of us are getting enlisted with Leader Kicking anytime soon...Plenty of laughs to be had with a great guest, so be sure to have a watch and if you like the cut of our gib, then be a friend and tell a friend!

With Tony having lost his voice due to the winter lurgy, Andy is left flying solo for the updates this week. He is, however, joined by a fantastic guest. Clinical Hypnotherapist, Motivational Speaker and Ultramarathoner Andy McMenemy comes in to look at how listeners can keep their motivation for their New Year's resolutions, as well as some of the psychology around extreme sports challenges and what leads to top level performance in elite teams. We update on the latest from the Australian Tennis Open, including players talking about the “Netflix Curse”. We then discuss the Manchester and North London football derbies and the top of the table clash in the Women's Super League. Staying with women's sport we cover England's netball series against Jamaica as they prepare for this year's World Cup. In Rugby the coaching changes continue and just 6 weeks after being sacked by England, Eddie Jones has been named as Australia's Head Coach-potentially setting up a mouth-watering clash with England in the World Cup in the autumn. Lastly we have a Doddie Aid update, with more of the Null & Void listeners joining up. There is still time to get involved and help raise funds & awareness for Motor Neurone Disease – just go to www.DoddieAid.com and sign up.
As Doddie Aid enters Week 2, The Back Bar lads are joined by the wonderful Jennifer Reoch to discuss Doddie Aid, working with Des Clarke on Heart Radio and the experience of winning Ms. Scotland, and competing in Ms. World.Doddie Aid hit the £1 million mark earlier this week, a Back Bar league milestone was also reached and a forfeit from Zander Fagerson was fulfilled...Have a listen to hear all about it, and also to see if the lads can get a mention on the radio and make the mums proud!TBBP
To kick off the first episode of 2023 we are delighted to be joined by former Scotland captain and British and Irish Lion, Rob Wainwright. Rob joins host Chris Paterson during the second week of this year's Doddie Aid - a virtual mass-participation exercise event he founded to help raise funds for My Name'5 Doddie Foundation which invests in research to find meaningful treatments for Motor Neuron Disease (MND). There's still time to get involved by visiting doddieaid.com
Tennis coach Justin Cook joins us this week ahead of the Australian Tennis Open to give his thoughts on the players to look out for in the tournament, as well as sharing an honest outline of the challenges facing coaches in the current economic climate. We give an update on how people are getting on in the Null & Void Doddie Aid league. There is still time to sign up at www.doddieaid.com and support MND (as well as knocking Tony down the table!). The 3rd Round of the FA Cup is always a magical time, with the big guns joining those teams that have made it through this far – and we look at some of the giant killings where the lower league teams have beaten Premier League teams. A cracker of an episode.
We kick off the 2023 Doddie Aid event with a return to the podcast for Warriors, Scotland and Lions prop and all round great lad, Zander Fagerson. Some chat about our New Years Day "Doddie Dooks", or lack of them in some cases, and maybe some forfeits for one of the hosting trifecta. We also touch on Doddie's legacy and Zander's memories of him, along with an update on his injury and hopes for the 6 Nations for himself and the Scotland team. A great chat and please listen in and also get involved in Doddie Aid yourself if not signed up already! Once that's done join our league for a chance at some great prizes including a signed jersey from the 1872 cup winning Glasgow Warriors squad!
We're back after a short festive break, and wishing all of our listeners a Happy New Year! Tony talks about the sad passing of World Cup winners George Cohen and shares his personal experience of meeting Pele, who also passed away at the end of 2022. We cast an eye back over some of the great memories from 2022 – the Lionesses winning the Euro's, a fantastic victory for England's Rugby League Wheelchair team, and the remarkable turnaround in England's cricket fortunes – with the test team setting records under Stokes & McCullum and the T20 World Cup win in Australia. We then look forwards to some of the upcoming events in 2023 – Women's T20 and Men's 50 Over World Cups on top of Ashes series for both sides, football's Lionesses trying to add a World Cup to their European crown, all the home nations competing in Rugby's World Cup in France, and Golf's Ryder Cup in the autumn – all just some of the highlights we're looking forward to. January is a time for resolutions, with many people getting more active to shift the mince pies. At Null & Void we have the perfect challenge for YOU, our listeners. We're supporting Doddie Aid and you can get involved too. Sign up at www.doddieaid.com– your £20 goes to supporting people with MND and finding a cure for this terrible illness. Once signed up you can then join the Null and Void league in the app. Track your activity – walking, running, swimming, cycling, rowing – they all count. We'll be tracking the league and sharing people's progress. There might even be a few N&V goodies for those that go the furthest or raise the most! So come and get involved!!
Our first show of 2023 and we set out our predictions and resolutions for the New Year on and off the pitch, including which bolters might make an impact going into a World Cup year. We're joined by six-time Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy to chat about his love for rugby and his involvement in this year's Doddie Aid. The lads give their take on the controversy around Joe Marler and his ban for insulting Jake Heenan, and we wrap up the best of the festive action from the Premiership and URC. The lads return for a chat to preview the upcoming Doddie Aid 2023 challenge with Team Glasgow Captain, Ryan Wilson. Obviously the 2023 event is going to be undertaken with an element of sadness due to the recent passing of Doddie, but we hope that honouring his legacy will spur people on to make this the biggest one yet.
My guest this week is Ellingham and Ringwood RFC President, Steve Benson. This interview was recorded in September of 2022 and we talked about Steve's playing days - which are still going on by the way - his years in refereeing, and some incredible insight into what it takes to start minis, juniors, girls, and women's rugby sides. We chat about all the good things going on at Ellingham and Ringwood including the 15 year process of moving the club to a new ground and building a clubhouse and we discuss the absolutely wonderful 'Fancy dress 7's and Beer Festival' event that they hold every year. What a treat to jump back into season 3 with top lad Stevie Jukes, one very handsome half of Scottish band Saint Phnx! This is a great chat with Stevie as we hear all you could ever want to know about this brilliant duo. How they got there, what's behind the name, a potential bromance with Hugh Jackman (Shuggie J to his pals), and how Maroon 5 helped them out on a epic video shoot in Iceland! There's also the renewing of rivalries with the lads as heroes and zeros makes a return following it's hiatus during Doddie Aid, and Stevie gets us back into the swing of things with the speed round. All in all it's a belter for your wee ears to listen to, so sit back and enjoy!Don't forget, each like, share, retweet etc is liking giving us a big warm virtual hug. So be nice and hug us :)
John Davidson aka The Mad Giraffe spent 15 years in the special forces, but nothing could have prepared him for his epic adventure on the Atlantic Ocean for the My Name's Doddie FoundationThe former SAS soldier has been shot down in a helicopter, shot down in a plane and shot. He's also been a kidnap for ransom hostage negotiator, however a solo 3000-mile row in a 28-foot boat has been “his biggest challenge yet”. John took on the Atlantic back in 2019 and it was a pleasure to catch up with him during World in a Day as we raised funds for Doddie Aid.Along with John, Dougie Vipond said hello on this Pod and Adventure Athlete Mark Beaumont joins in to discuss his attempt at rowing the Atlantic and how it ended in disaster. This Podcast was recorded Live on Zoom so please excuse any short drop outs in sound quality. The last in the series of Doddie Aid specials as the 2022 challenge comes to an end on the 12th Feb! What a way to wrap it up by having the driving force behind Doddie Aid and one of Doddie's best pals, not to mention for British & Irish Lion and Scotland Captain...Mr Rob Wainwright! This one was an absolute hoot as we talk Doddie Aid, the Calcutta Cup victory and preview the Doddie Cup 500 cycle from Murrayfield to Cardiff Castle. The topics in between are quite the magical and hilarious meander rather than straight from A to B. Mini certainly had his eyes opened on some nuances of cycling etiquette...Be sure to share it far and wide to promote the cause of Doddie Aid, and as always we welcome your likes, shares, retweets, reviews etc. Seriously, if you don't enjoy this one it comes with money back guarantee ;)
It's the turn of Team Glasgow captain, Glasgow & Scotland rugby legend, Al Kellock to join us at the Back Bar as we head for the home straight of Doddie Aid! Ahead of the 6 Nations Calcutta Cup opener we chat about Scotland's squad and chances for that game and the tournament, throw a spotlight onto the up and coming Glasgow Warriors squad and the fantastic season they're having so far! We also, of course, have plenty to say on the incredible efforts of everyone in the first 4/5 weeks of Doddie Aid. The speed round throws out a potentially interesting challenge as well, so keep your ears peeled for that one. Sit down and enjoy, then feel free to share this with some friends and bring some of that enjoyment to their lives to. Don't forget to share, subscribe, review, rate and all that stuff that gives us smiles. Peace and love amigos.
