Elizabeth Saltzman is the woman behind the impeccable style of some of Hollywood's most talented ladies. Think Saoirse Ronan, Jodie Comer, Sandra Oh, and Gwyneth Paltrow. However, Saltzman initially wanted to pursue architecture and became involved in the Downtown New York nightclub and art scenes. But, unable to avoid her fashion destiny for long, she took a retail job at the Madonna- and David Bowie–approved fashion destination Parachute. From there, she was recruited to work at Giorgio Armani, where she worked her way up from the stockroom to the public relations department. After a few years, she made yet another pivot into editorial work, quickly becoming a senior fashion editor at Vogue and then fashion director at Vanity Fair. After spending 20 years at some of the most iconic publications and labels in fashion, industry experts suggested she try applying her impressive fashion eye to styling—and her friend Gwyneth Paltrow just so happened to be looking for a stylist. The two teamed up to create stunning look after stunning look, and the rest is fashion history. Serge Neborak is the founder of Drink More Water. Drink More Water is a Downtown New York fashion brand that Serge created by being inspired by art that excites him and the micro celebs that surround him. Serge has had fashion shows that feature friends and guests of the show such as Jean Luc and Shallowhalo and his collections have been written up in online publications such as Nylon from friend and guest of the show, Sophia June. I met Serge at X Pizza where he had his fight night series, battle for downtown and “The Artist Series” and I saw it in Serge that he really puts on for his friends. Episode Notes Companies delivering walking tours of Manhattan often deliver stereotypical tours with no originality. So Travel Experiences Reporter Selene Brophy writes about an initiative in New York that helps entrepreneurs develop compelling and original walking tour experiences. Brophy reports the Alliance for Downtown New York is in the final stages of its Walking Tour Incubator Grant Program. Five walking tour businesses have been chosen to receive grants of up to $12,500. Brophy adds the money for creating more diverse walking tours of Lower Manhattan is set to launch in the summer of 2024. Nikki Padilla, one of the program's mentors, said diversity in product is important, noting that many tours are mirror images of each other. Padilla added that travelers want to be immersed in different facets of communities, acknowledging the tour guide is often the only meaningful interaction a visitor might have with a destination's history or culture. Meanwhile, Stephen Oddo, another of the program's mentors, said the challenge for the entrepreneurs is to find unique ways to reach prospective customers about different facets of New York's attractions. Next, India's aviation sector is poised for a major boom. But Asia Editor Peden Doma Bhutia reports it needs an entirely new policy in order to fulfill its enormous potential. As India's aviation sector is among the fastest growing in the world, aviation consultancy and research firm CAPA India projects the country might need the infrastructure to be able to welcome 1 billion passengers annually within two decades. The firm has outlined a plan for a new civil aviation policy. India is expected to be the world's third-largest aviation market by 2025, according to the International Air Transport Association. CAPA India also predicted the aviation industry could inject $1 trillion yearly into the Indian economy by 2043. Finally, Colombia's flag airline Avianca has unveiled a subscription program just for business travelers, reports Corporate Travel Editor Matthew Parsons. Avianca has partnered with Caravelo, a company that creates subscription platforms for airlines. Parsons notes the new program, Avianca Access, provides corporate travelers opportunities for potentially cheaper trips without their employers having to commit to an annual quota. Caravelo CEO Inaki Uriz said the program is aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises. The program is operational, but Parsons noted it's expected to be officially launched later this year.

In addition, James Wolcott takes us on a tour of CBGB, the Mudd Club, and some of the other notorious (and now gone) rock clubs from the 70s and 80s. And speaking of music: Chris Black reports on Electric Lady, the Greenwich Village recording studio started by Jimi Hendrix, while Stephanie Danler shares her memories of seeing a pre-fame Lady Gaga in 2006 at Pianos. All this and more make this week's show one you won't want to miss.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

If These Walls Could Talk with Wendy Stuart & Tym MossHosts: WENDY STUART & TYM MOSSSpecial guest: TAMMY FAYEWednesday, October 20thLIVE from PANGEA Restaurant, NYCWatch LIVE on YouTube at Wendy Stuart TVTammy Lang a/k/a Tammy Faye Starlite has come to be one of the brightest stars in the Downtown New York scene. The always peripatetic Tammy maintains a busy schedule of performances, guest appearances and benefits, not only in Manhattan but around the country with appearances in Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Chicago, St Louis, Pittsburgh as well as the farthest reaches of New Jersey and New Hampshire. She's been a girl on the go-go since her soap opera days when she was a regular on The Guiding light portraying one of two “wacky maids.” Allison Janney was the other one.She later came up with the Tammy Faye Starlite character, a chipper yet bitter country music singer whose reactionary rantings and authentically convincing Partonesque vocals made for sophisticated satire of the highest -- or lowest -- order. Her jaw-dropping repertoire included such ersatz country classics as “God Has Lodged A Tenant In My Uterus” and “Did I Shave My Vagina For This?” among other campfire favorites. Against all odds, the act was accepted not only in New York and LA but also in Nashville where her sold-out performances both scandalized and thrilled club goers. Her following in Music City grew exponentially to the point where the fire marshal had to be called on at least one occasion. In recent times, her startling feats of musical reincarnation she has created a new kind of cabaret. Equally gifted as an actor and singer, Lang deep-dives into the vaults of art-pop-rock-whatever and returns clutching buried treasures. In Nico: Underground-- her bio-show, as it might be called – she brings back the late Velvet Underground icon in all of her fuzzed-out, deadpan glory. With mentions of Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Jackson Brown, John Cale and Andy Warhol, she animates the character providing both historical context and up to the minute contemporary references. With Cabaret Marianne and, most recently Why'd Ya Do It? Lang salutes Marianne Faithfull one of the great, straight-talking divas of modern pop music, another foreboding yet tragically vulnerable blonde icon of the 1960s. She pays homage by performing a singular repertoire that is bitingly and world weary while commenting on the continuing downward spiral of the culture. Both portrayals are much more than mere concert tributes; she possesses these real-life characters provides with spiky monologues woven between songs that have had audiences alternately laughing and gasping. Nico and Faithfull were women committed to following their own rocky paths. They stood for a bruising new vision of love and other let downs. Now, thanks to Lang, they stand before us once again.Beyond those portrayals, Tammy has succeeded in adapting the repertoire of Rolling Stones albums in order to make them come alive in a cabaret context. Just A Kiss Away, found her tackling Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street. Even Their Satanic Majesties Request has all be tackled with aplomb, bringing intimacy to the Jagger/Richards repertoire while channeling the attitude and affect of Mick Jagger, but with less estrogen. Who else but hosts Wendy Stuart and Tym Moss could “spill the tea” on their weekly show “If These Walls Could Talk” live from Pangea Restaurant on the Lower Eastside of NYC, with their unique style, of honest, and emotional interviews, sharing the fascinating backstories of celebrities, entertainers, recording artists, writers and artists and bringing their audience along for a fantastic ride.Wendy Stuart is an author, celebrity interviewer, model, filmmaker and hosts “Pandemic Cooking With Wendy,” a popular Youtube comedic cooking show born in the era of Covid-19, and TriVersity Talk, a weekly web series with featured guests discussing their lives, activism and pressing issues in the LGBTQ Community.Tym Moss is a popular NYC singer, actor, and radio/tv host who recently starred in the hit indie film “JUNK” to critical acclaim.

Jordan Silbert is the founder and CEO of Q Mixers, the premium brand of cocktail mixers. The idea for the company came to him while he was drinking top-shelf gin mixed with low-quality tonic with friends and asked himself, “Shouldn’t my tonic be as good as my gin?” Next came years of experimenting before he devised the perfect blend of high-quality ingredients and ample carbonation that became the brand’s first product. Today the Brooklyn-based company has 11 products and is distributed by all major retailers, in addition to being stocked by discerning bartenders everywhere. Before founding Q Mixers in 2006, Jordan was director of rebuilding initiatives for the Alliance for Downtown New York, where he provided the creative spark to revitalize parts of Lower Manhattan devastated by 9/11. Prior to that, he was director of business development for a startup, EQuill, that was eventually acquired by Microsoft. Talking Basquiat the Teenage YearsThe great iconic artist Jean-Michel Basquiat is remembered by his friends who knew him when, as a teenager, he first burst upon the Downtown New York scene as Samo and began to make the artworks that sell for millions of dollars today. Sara Driver’s movie Boom for Real is the jumping off point for a conversation about Basquiat and New York in the 80s with “Beginnings” host and Paper magazine founder David Hershkovits, Driver, Alexis Adler, Felice Rosser and Lee Quinones. This talk was Howl! Happening's key exhibition event for "Zeitgeist: The Art Scene of Teenage Basquiat" a lively discussion about the times and artists in the exhibition. First-hand, and up close and personal, our panel of artists was in the midst of the development of a scene that has produced some of the most influential creators of our time. These artists present an unvarnished “realness” characteristic of the times—intersecting with the public’s avid interest it has pushed whole new generations to appreciate (and long for) that lost, raw and anarchically free era.Artwork: Fight Tyranny In All Forms by Walter RobinsonSupport the show (https://squareup.com/store/howl-arts-inc)
Jessica Lappin, President of the Alliance for Downtown New York, just released a report hot off the presses envisioning how to revitalize the Stock Exchange District, the historic birthplace of the global capitalism. Since 9/11, when security priorities closed the streets, the crossroads lost some of its soul, but the future is bright if Lappin can build on the support she’s galvanized to revitalize the area.
