Driver education and re-education at varying stages of life are two ideas continually brought up when discussing the problem of bad drivers on the roads. An early driver education program is in place at Redbank Plains State High School which has been incredible successful. Roz Boyd, the director of the Redbank Plains State High School's Prep L Program, told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, 'we have a waiting list for our driving program'.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It was a tragic Easter for some, with seven people dying on the roads - the highest Easter toll in three years, and the second highest in 14. The worst was on State Highway 8 at Pukaki. Three people died at the scene and a fourth person died in hospital. I know exactly where that crash happened because we drove that stretch of road countless times when the kids were rowing, and we were up and down to Twizel almost every second weekend. And I saw some shocking driving on that road. Not just at Pukaki. But in that general area. Now I'm not having a go at anyone involved in that crash —or anyone involved in any of the crashes, for that matter— because I don't know what happened, what caused them, all of that. But I do know something, and it has struck me that it is absolutely nuts. And it's the fact that, whether you are experienced at driving or not, you can drive a car on the open road as soon as you get behind the wheel. On a learner licence? As long as you've got a licenced driver with you, go for your life. On a restricted licence? You don't even need a licenced driver with you if you drive between 5am and 10pm, and you can do that on the open road at speeds up to 90kph or 100kph. Often, when we come back after a long weekend —or even during the holiday periods themselves— we talk about what could or should be done to make our roads safer. And most of the time people talk about higher fines for speeding, more cops out on the road. Essentially, the big stick approach. Get tough and people will think twice before they do something crazy behind the wheel. Median barriers are another thing we often end up talking about. So, it's either scare people into driving safer with tougher penalties, or keep them away from each other, as much as possible with median barriers, which I'm a big advocate for. But has it ever occurred to you how nuts it is that we train and test new drivers on urban 50kph roads, but don't do any training to prepare them for driving at high speed on highways and motorways? I don't think it's ever struck me before. But it did after seeing where the Easter road toll was at and hearing the cops say they are exasperated by what's happening on the roads. Especially by what happened at the weekend. Road policing director Superintendent Steve Greally is someone you would expect to be upset. He says he's “utterly disappointed”. Here's what he said to media yesterday. “It beggars belief. I guess that some people just don't understand the basics - even though they are really simple. Slow down - we can't say it any other way. "This has blown my mind a little bit, we don't want anymore. This is enough carnage for people to bear.” And who isn't going to agree with that? I'm not. Are you? So, if we're not going to argue with the cop in charge of road safety, who says enough's enough, what do we do about it? One of the things that Superintendent Steve Greally has been talking about is “red mist”. This is where anger clouds our judgement. And he was saying that, if people get affected by red mist when they're behind the wheel, they should take an extra day's leave. But, if you're someone who loses their rag behind the wheel, it's not going to make any difference whether you drive back home during the holiday weekend or after it. I think we should be focusing more on whether we do enough to prepare people for driving on the open road. Because I don't think we do. In fact, I know we don't - because we don't do anything! We teach people how to use a vehicle —generally on 50kph roads— we make them learn the road rules, then they sit a test on those road rules, and then we test their driving on the 50kph roads they learnt to drive on. If they do all that, away they go. Which is nuts. We can dish out as many speeding tickets as we like but, if we're going to keep on doing things the way we are now, in terms of preparing people for driving at high speeds on open roads, then Superintendent Steve Greally is going to be just as exasperated in five years time, as he is now. Driver's EducationIt's the holiday season! That means roads, side streets, interstates, and driveways across the country are packed with vehicles on the way to or from seasonal celebrations. Inspired by the onslaught of holiday traffic, 16:1 is taking a look at driver education programs across the country. In the United States, there is no national standard for driver's education, though guidelines are distributed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and interpreted by each state. The patchwork, state-by-state approach to driver's education in the U.S. evolved from a more holistic approach; driver's education used to be offered in 95% of public schools. With the privatization of driver training programs came new challenges. How are drivers in the U.S. staying safe? Her love affair with Porsche started with a “FOR SALE” sign on a Saturn Yellow '72 914 that Mia Walsh saw while on her bicycle just prior to her 16th birthday. Somehow, she convinced the owner to let her take it for a spin. It wouldn't be until 25 years later that she and her husband would purchase their first Porsche and join the Potomac Region of the PCA. With over 300 total track days under her belt and encouraged by other racers to make the move to Club Racing, Mia modified her '09 Cayman S into a fully prepared GTB1 Race Car. She had her first race at Summit Point in 2015, winning two 3rd place podiums her first weekend, as well as the coveted Rookie Award from PCA National. After being recognized nationally as a top HPDE instructor in 2013, Mia worked her way up to the Potomac Region President in 2019. Walsh now serves as Porsche Club of America - National High-Performance Driver Education Chair where she hopes to continue to encourage more women to participate. Mia chats with host Amanda Busick about her career with PCA and how she continues to inspire females in the classroom and at the track and how her birding hobby has helped her focus on racing.

During the COVID-19 emergency Gov. Sununu allowed parts of driver education to take place online or with a parent. Those adjustments ended along with the state of emergency, but some legislators believe the allowances should go even further. Ten state legislators are sponsoring a bill that would let parents provide all of driver education instead of enrolling their teen in an approved course. To say that Artie Kamiya has dedicated his life to his profession would be a massive understatement. This man has had a massive impact not only on the students who were lucky enough to have him as their teacher, but indirectly tens of thousands of children and youth who's teachers were lucky enough to meet him. Artie could very easily be considered the “Godfather of #PhysEd.” Born and raised in Los Angeles, California. Artie was overweight as an elementary school child, and he was often subjected to many of the negative aspects of traditional physical education. However, he was fortunate to have been encouraged through a strong junior high physical education program and slowly became interested in the sport of gymnastics. He competed in high school, collegiate level (Los Angeles City College, Cal State LA), and at the 1972 National NCAA Gymnastics Championships on the rings. Upon receiving a Masters of Art in Teaching (MAT) degree from the University of North Carolina, he worked as an elementary physical education teacher for Wake County Public Schools (Raleigh, NC). While in this position, he was able to become involved in curriculum writing, presenting, and other leadership activities. In 1983, he was hired by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction as a Physical Education Consultant. In 1996, he was promoted to the Section Chief for Arts and Healthful Living. In this position, he directed a group of 11 professionals representing the Arts (Music, Dance, Visual Arts, Theatre Arts) and Healthful Living (Health, Physical Education, Athletics, Driver Education). From 2001-2005, he was the Senior Administrator for K-12 Healthful Living Education for Wake County Schools. Artie was recognized in 2004 as the National Physical Education Administrator of the Year. He has been called one of the “nation's leading experts for K-12 health and physical education.” He is the President & Founder of the Great Activities Publishing Company, a company known for their innovative K-12 PE publications, services, and workshops. His work has appeared on numerous ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox TV affiliates, as well as on National Public Radio and in USA Today. He retired from public service in 2005, but continued to follow his passion as a health and physical education advocate through his work within the Great Activities Publishing Company. He was recognized by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education as the 2007 “Joy of Effort” Award winner. In this episode, we talk with Lara Hickling, Facilitator, and Director at Queensland Traffic Offenders Program, about creating hyper-specific education plans, implementing feedback from your students, the nuanced and far-reaching effects of traffic offenses, and much more. Key Quotes:“We are not just a one-day quick fix program. We are here to save lives in our community.”“We need to educate people on road safety. People do a road safety session when they're going for their license, and that could have been 30, 40 years ago. But what have you done since then to educate yourself?”“There are a lot of road users out there that forget that our emergency personnel are human beings and are affected by what they see as well. So if we can actually deter one person from re-offending, saving someone's life that's what it's all about.”SponsorIncredible Learning Experiences is brought to you by your friends at ProctorFree, an on-demand, convenient, and cost-effective online proctoring solution for education and corporate environments. Ann Morey joins me to talk about how to get in the zone, what gets in the way of doing so, the voices we all have in our heads when driving, self-critique versus self-awareness, experimenting to learn, and the journey she’s on to win Spec Miata races. Ann writes a great blog about her racing and driving experience at GentleWomanRacer.com. She started doing Driver Education track events about 5 years ago, got addicted to the sport, and now races a Spec Miata in the Southeast. Drive Fit is a great training tool for everyone that wants to learn drive. And, the driving tours are a great way to learn a new city. Drive Fit is particularly well suited as a training tool for people with cognitive issues such as Aspergers Syndrome and High Functioning Autism. Like most of us, people with cognitive issues need to get around for work, school, and social activities. Although people with cognitive challenges may have average or above-average intelligence, their unique learning style may keep them from being able to learn to drive through traditional driver's education programs. Drive Fit is the latest tool based on the work of Miriam Monahan an Occupational Therapist that specializes in helping people with cognitive challenges (such as Traumatic Brain Injury, ADHD, and Returning Combat Veterans) learn to drive. Her previous tools are used by OTs to help aspiring drivers learn to focus on critical roadway information while ignoring all the unnecessary, non-critical things that might be going on. For the first time, Drive Fit takes this specialized knowledge out of the clinic and makes it available to everyone on an iPad.
