For most of human history, space has been a place we visited. The next chapter may be about building there. For decades, space was the domain of governments, astronauts, and science fiction. Today, falling launch costs, reusable rockets, and a new generation of ambitious founders are turning orbit into something else entirely: a place to build. The question is no longer whether humanity can construct large-scale infrastructure in space, but what we should build first—and why.In this episode of TechSurge, host Sriram Vishwanath speaks with Dr. Ariel Ekblaw, Founder and CEO of Aurelia Institute, Research Affiliate at MIT's Space Exploration Initiative, and founder of Rendezvous Robotics. Ariel has spent her career exploring one of the most fundamental challenges of the emerging space economy: how to build structures in orbit that are far larger than anything that can fit inside a rocket.Ariel explains the origins of TESSERAE, her pioneering work on autonomous self-assembling space architecture, and how ideas borrowed from biology, swarm intelligence, and modular construction could unlock a future of massive solar arrays, communications infrastructure, orbital laboratories, and eventually human habitats in space. The conversation explores the rapidly emerging market for in-orbit infrastructure, including AI data centers in space, space-based solar power, and the technologies needed to support a permanent industrial presence beyond Earth. Ariel breaks down the engineering realities behind these ideas—why cooling data centers in space is harder than most people assume, how autonomous assembly could solve the scale problem, and why the future of orbital infrastructure may look more like a business park than a collection of standalone satellites.Sriram and Ariel also discuss the broader implications of humanity's return to space: the economics unlocked by reusable launch systems, the opportunities created by dramatically lower transportation costs, and the second-order innovations that may emerge from building an industrial ecosystem in orbit. Along the way, they examine space debris, stewardship of the orbital commons, artificial gravity, and what it will take to make long-term human habitation in space viable. At the heart of the discussion is Ariel's belief that space is not an escape from Earth's problems, but a tool for solving them. Whether through advanced manufacturing, new energy systems, biotechnology research, or entirely new industries, she argues that the next era of space exploration should be focused on improving life here at home.Sign up for our newsletter at techsurgepodcast.com for updates on upcoming TechSurge Live Summits and future episodes.Links:Ariel Ekblaw on LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/arielekblawAurelia Institute:https://www.aureliainstitute.orgRendezvous Robotics:https://www.rdvrobotics.comMIT Space Exploration Initiative:https://www.media.mit.edu/groups/space-exploration/overview/How Aurelia is Designing Self-Assembling Space Stations: https://www.fastcompany.com/91242689/how-the-aurelia-institute-is-designing-a-self-assembling-space-stationOverview Energy (Space-Based Solar Power): https://www.overviewenergy.comStarCatcher Industries (Space-to-Space Power Transmission): https://www.starcatcherindustries.comImpulse Space (Orbital Transportation): https://www.impulsespace.comReferences Mentioned During the DiscussionEarthrise - The Apollo 8 Photograph: https://www.nasa.gov/image-article/apollo-8-earthrise/Carl Sagan's “Pale Blue Dot”: https://www.planetary.org/worlds/pale-blue-dotBuckminster Fuller Institute: https://www.bfi.orgWatch Ariel's Talks & InterviewsAurelia Institute YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@AureliaInstituteAriel's TED Talk: https://youtu.be/IHrGK3Mu5K4?si=QwGHq1BEoB-QMUjkSpace Business Podcast - Self-Assembling Space Habitats with Ariel Ekblaw: https://spacebusiness.podbean.com/e/137-self-assembling-space-habitats-ariel-ekblaw-founder-ceo-aurelia-institute/Further ReadingNASA's Artemis Program: https://www.nasa.gov/artemisInternational Space Station (ISS): https://www.nasa.gov/international-space-stationAurelia Institute's Vision for Humanity's Future in Space: https://www.aureliainstitute.orgMIT News: Supporting Mission-Driven Space Innovation: https://news.mit.edu/2025/supporting-mission-driven-space-innovation-aurelia-institute-0710Timestamps:[00:00] Highlights[00:34] Welcome to the Episode[02:33] The New Space Race Begins[04:10] Meet Dr. Ariel Ekblaw[06:30] Why We Explore Space? [12:53] How She Discovered Self-Assembly at MIT [17:10] How TESSERAE Tiles Build Themselves[20:14] How the Tiles Coordinate Like a Swarm[24:47] Repairing and Reconfiguring Structures in Orbit[28:32] Why the Space Industry Is Exploding Now[34:25] The Case for AI Data Centers in Space[45:21] How Much Compute Will Move to Space?[48:40] Why This Space Era Is Different[52:24] The Growing Problem of Space Debris[55:14] Building the Next SpaceX[57:27] What Could Go Wrong in Space?[59:33 ] How Many Hours of Gravity Do Humans Need?[01:00:38] Why We Should Build in Low Earth Orbit First[01:05:09] Should We Really Colonize Mars?[01:11:27] Could You Commute to Space for Work?[01:13:50] Who Makes the Rules in Space?[01:22:30] What's Overhyped and Underhyped in Space[01:26:57]What's the Real Story in Space?

Lions Prepping for the Combine - Detroit Lions Podcast

The Detroit Lions Podcast

Who Makes the Calls in Allen Park Now? Episode 603 of the Detroit Lions Podcast opens with the question hanging over Allen Park. With Rod Wood retiring, who is steering football decisions day to day? The show lays out a direct agenda: assess the cap, sprint through free agency priorities, and prep for the NFL Scouting Combine. The timing matters. Combine week concentrates information, from personnel whispers to process checks. That is where clarity on roles can sharpen. The show centers the concern without panic. The operations list is long. Football choices cannot stall. The Lions have a window to align budgets, targets, and evals before Indy. Rod Wood's Legacy and Ford Field's Staying Power The conversation traces Wood's arc with the Detroit Lions. He worked for the Ford family in one form or another for almost thirty years, with roughly twenty more in investment banking before that. His tenure with the team dates to 2015, the Jim Caldwell era, marked by mediocrity and dead cap. He was involved in the Patricia decision, though he was not the decision maker. The organization even brought in outside counsel, including Ernie Coursey, to shape that process. Wood's imprint shows in concrete ways. Ford Field remains a viable venue, even as it nears thirty years and sits among the NFL's ten oldest stadiums. Built in the late 1990s and opened in 2000 or 2001, it still works because it improved. That is part of Wood's legacy. He also pushed to end an outlier status in Allen Park by securing the Meeks sponsorship for the training facility. The league had moved in that direction. Detroit aligned. Cap Outlook, Free Agency Sprint, Combine Plan The episode maps the near-term workload. First, clarify the Detroit Lions cap picture. Then hit a sprint through free agency to set tiers and timelines. Finally, lock in combine prep. Measurements, interviews, and positional benchmarks drive the board. The show frames Indy as the place to learn not only about prospects, but also about how the league values the Lions roster and decision makers right now. Every day lost before the combine is costly. The Lions need decisions on structure so scouts, coaches, and execs move in sync. That is the task list before wheels up. Why Indy Matters for the Detroit Lions Indy concentrates the NFL. It is where schedules stack, meals turn into meetings, and league perception reveals itself. The hosts emphasize that they learn more there about how the league perceives the Detroit Lions than any other week outside free agency and the draft. That intel feeds back into cap choices, free agency targets, and how to deploy limited time with prospects. Even the small stuff surfaces, from stadium quirks to fan experience notes. A rancid ketchup complaint gets a laugh, but it underlines a core point. Details and decisions both define a franchise. With Rod Wood stepping away, clarity on who makes the football calls is priority one as Detroit heads to the combine. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #rodwood #allenpark #fordfield #jimcaldwellera #patriciadecision #erniecoursey #meekssponsorship #salarycap #freeagencysprint #combineprep #indy #leagueperceivesthelions #episode603 #fordfamily Learn more about your ad choices. My guest today is Ramtin Naimi. Ramtin is the founder of Abstract Ventures, one of the most talked-about seed funds in Silicon Valley. What makes Ramtin's story so compelling isn't just his firm's remarkable track record—including early investments in Rippling, Solana, and dozens of unicorns—but also the unconventional path he took to get there. From running a hedge fund straight out of high school to filing for bankruptcy at 24, then bootstrapping his way to building a $2 billion AUM venture firm using AngelList and relentless hustle. Our conversation begins in an unexpected place—the art world—where Ramtin has become a sophisticated collector, learning from mentors like Michael Ovitz about market dynamics that surprisingly mirror venture capital. We dive deep into how the art world actually works, and Ramtin explains how these lessons about "masterpieces" apply directly to identifying power-law companies in venture. We go deep on his approach to early-stage investing and how he built Abstract as a co-investment vehicle alongside firms like Sequoia, Benchmark, and Andreessen Horowitz. We explore his portfolio construction model, his philosophy on dilution-sensitive founders, and why he takes upwards of 30 pitch meetings per week to build his "frame of reference." We discuss why Abstract has the highest graduation rate from seed to Series A among all seed funds, and how this competitive advantage compounds over time. This is his first time telling his story, and we discuss the power of pattern recognition, relentless work ethic, and the unique opportunities available to those willing to start from scratch in Silicon Valley. His latest book, Who Makes the NBA, uses data to interrogate some of basketball's biggest questions, consistently yielding unexpected insights. Here's the kicker - he wrote the entire book in just 30 days after discovering Code Interpreter. Unsurprisingly for a former quant, I had a blast chatting to Seth. Topics discussed include why so many NBA players are called Chris, whether basketball is due for a Moneyball moment, and why so many of us misunderstand the rags-to-riches story. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Fractional Sales Executives Mike Malloy believes the future of work is fractional, like the fractional sales executives he provides to a particular niche in the US. That niche is B2B SaaS tech companies. On this episode of The Next 100 Days Podcast, we discover a truly amazing individual, whose talents extend way beyond his subject specialism. Listen and watch to discover more about Mike Malloy. Mike spoke to us from Rye, New Hampshire where he was visiting family, but he normally resides in Lewis, Delaware (perilously close to where their President spends the majority of his time). Summary of the Podcast An Introduction Mike introduced fractional sales executives as experienced professionals who work part-time for multiple companies. These sales people provide temporary expertise to help businesses scale their sales processes. Mike's company matches experienced sales executives with growing B2B SaaS companies. He does this through an assessment of their sales systems and needs. His Fractional Sales Executives His Executives commit 5-10 hours weekly for 3-6 months on a flexible budget. Mike has vetted over 249 executives with diverse backgrounds to suit various company needs. Candidates undergo screening for skills, experience and cultural fit before recommendations to clients. Measuring Success is Like Executives provide training, processes and introductions while CEOs oversee growth. Success is tracked through qualified leads, appointments, wins and time from first contact to payment. Velocities through the funnel indicate where bottlenecks may exist. The Future is Fractional Sales Executives Fractional work was presented as the future, allowing experts to work flexibly across industries while entrepreneurs access affordable expertise. International opportunities also exist to expand client bases. Fractional sales executives were deemed a cost-effective means for companies to access experienced help and expand more quickly than funding full-time staff. Opportunities also exist to introduce this model across borders. Seth-Stephens Davidowitz wrote a book in 30 days—and he did it with ChatGPT. Seth is a data scientist, economist, and author who challenged himself to write a book—Who Makes the NBA?—in less than 1 month after realizing how fast he could work by using ChatGPT plugin Advanced Data Analysis. But along the way he discovered something else: Writing with AI wasn't just faster, it was also way more fun. Seth outsourced the boring parts of data analysis—like cleaning data, merging files, and looking up code snippets—to AI. This left him to focus on what he loves: thinking up questions to ask the dataset. In a world where AI can answer any question humans know the answer to, asking the right questions is becoming increasingly important—a skill Seth isn't just really good at, but also finds joy in. In this episode, Seth walks me through how he used AI to analyze data and write a book in 30 days. We get into: How to create and edit complex charts with AI in seconds Using ChatGPT to brainstorm creative ideas How AI is redefining who can be an artist Why ChatGPT is an excellent tool to get a quick ballpark estimate Developing a sixth sense about when ChatGPT is wrong The power of AI instantly answering hard questions that would normally take months of research We also use ChatGPT to analyze a dataset of Olympic athletes live on the show—in pursuit of finding out which sport I'm best suited for! This episode is a must-watch for anyone curious about data science and how AI is transforming the future of creativity (or who is just a fan of the NBA). Mankind is in no position to judge God's actions based on our limited range of vision. Summary on the Issue of Who Makes the RulesMany believe being better than the next guy will be our ticket to Heaven. Others reject the existence of God and Jesus entirely. Even more believe, incorrectly, that there are other paths besides Jesus to find joy beyond the grave (John 14:6). If one rejects the Bible, all these positions are understandable and logical. Of course, the mature Christian will counter with a litany of evidence that there is a Creator, and then add the miraculous to strengthen the argument that He remains active today. However, rarely does that move the needle once one passes the age of a child who is being indoctrinated by parents, peers, and the church. And, even with children, saying a prayer at 8 years old still calls for a demonstrated change in behavior for a lifetime (James 2:14-16). Sometimes God puts trials in life that draw even adults to the cross (as He did with me). God does use preachers, Sunday School teachers, and evangelists, to plant and water the Lord's plan of salvation (1 Cor. 3:7). But, in the end, it all comes down to faith, not facts. And, a relationship with Christ is not a passing thing, it is a lifestyle change.  Hebrews 11:1,6 - Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen... And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Today, Razib talks to Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, author of Who Makes the NBA?: Data-Driven Answers to Basketball's Biggest Questions and Everybody Lies: Big Data, New Data, and What the Internet Can Tell Us About Who We Really Are. Stephens-Davidowitz, formerly of Google and The New York Times, is a freelance data scientist and author. He has a degree in philosophy from Stanford and a PhD in economics from Harvard. In this episode, he discusses his process of writing Who Makes the NBA?, which he crafted in a month using ChatGPT's code interpreter feature, and the biggest insights from his book. Razib probes Stephens-Davidowitz on the relationship between height and athletic ability, and why success in the NBA has the largest heritable component of any major league sport. They also discuss the finding that children of NBA players enjoy a non-genetic advantage in basketball, and why those who make it into the league and succeed are from higher socioeconomic strata. Stephens-Davidowitz also discusses why international basketball is popular in the former Yugoslavia and Lithuania, and how the popularity of volleyball in Iran and Brazil affects the pipeline of talent from those nations. The episode concludes with the author's detailed thoughts about what it was like to write a book assisted by AI, and the feasibility of this sort of content creation over the next decade. Razib and Stephens-Davidowitz discuss the possibility of massive productivity gains from AI over the next few years and the long-term feasibility of writing careers if AI keeps improving at the current rate. Finally, Stephens-Davidowitz lays out his plan to write his next few years' of books at a far faster clip, relying on AI assistance..

Seth Stephens-Davidowitz has unusually written an unusual book. The data analysis included in "Who Makes the NBA?: Data-Driven Answers to Basketball's Biggest Questions" normally would have taken Seth, a trained economist, multiple years of writing and running code. But because of new artificial intelligence tools, he finished the book in just thirty days. And he used AI tools not just for the coding, but also for the artwork, copy editing, and even to write the appendix. He discusses with Cardiff the lessons he learned about using AI, and what such accelerated productivity might mean for the future of the labor market. Then they discuss the actual findings in the book, an investigation into the backgrounds of the basketball players who make it to the NBA and succeed when they get there. How much of success is genetic? What accounts for the NBA's market failures—the traits of players who get paid too much and too little relative to their contributions? Why do some foreign countries have such astonishing success at sending players to the NBA? Does the choice of college really matter for future success? The answers to these questions are surprisingly revealing about the experiences of non-basketball players, and about the relationships between luck, skill, parenting, undiscovered talent, the economy, and other familiar variables. Listen to the song while watching the video. Listen to the Peel version.  Hiram and Bob talkin' 'bout Who Makes the Nazis and stuff. There's probably a curse word. Contact: pgtfsg@gmail.com. The Annotated Fall lies here: http://annotatedfall.doomby.com/
