Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, a data scientist and bestselling author, is known for his brilliant use of data to upend conventional wisdom - often with humorous, surprising, and occasionally shocking results. His latest book, Who Makes the NBA, uses data to interrogate some of basketball's biggest questions, consistently yielding unexpected insights. Here's the kicker - he wrote the entire book in just 30 days after discovering Code Interpreter. Unsurprisingly for a former quant, I had a blast chatting to Seth. Topics discussed include why so many NBA players are called Chris, whether basketball is due for a Moneyball moment, and why so many of us misunderstand the rags-to-riches story. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Fractional Sales Executives Mike Malloy believes the future of work is fractional, like the fractional sales executives he provides to a particular niche in the US. That niche is B2B SaaS tech companies. On this episode of The Next 100 Days Podcast, we discover a truly amazing individual, whose talents extend way beyond his subject specialism. Listen and watch to discover more about Mike Malloy. Mike spoke to us from Rye, New Hampshire where he was visiting family, but he normally resides in Lewis, Delaware (perilously close to where their President spends the majority of his time). Summary of the Podcast An Introduction Mike introduced fractional sales executives as experienced professionals who work part-time for multiple companies. These sales people provide temporary expertise to help businesses scale their sales processes. Mike's company matches experienced sales executives with growing B2B SaaS companies. He does this through an assessment of their sales systems and needs. His Fractional Sales Executives His Executives commit 5-10 hours weekly for 3-6 months on a flexible budget. Mike has vetted over 249 executives with diverse backgrounds to suit various company needs. Candidates undergo screening for skills, experience and cultural fit before recommendations to clients. Measuring Success is Like Executives provide training, processes and introductions while CEOs oversee growth. Success is tracked through qualified leads, appointments, wins and time from first contact to payment. Velocities through the funnel indicate where bottlenecks may exist. The Future is Fractional Sales Executives Fractional work was presented as the future, allowing experts to work flexibly across industries while entrepreneurs access affordable expertise. International opportunities also exist to expand client bases. Fractional sales executives were deemed a cost-effective means for companies to access experienced help and expand more quickly than funding full-time staff. Seth-Stephens Davidowitz wrote a book in 30 days—and he did it with ChatGPT. Seth is a data scientist, economist, and author who challenged himself to write a book—Who Makes the NBA?—in less than 1 month after realizing how fast he could work by using ChatGPT plugin Advanced Data Analysis. But along the way he discovered something else: Writing with AI wasn't just faster, it was also way more fun. Seth outsourced the boring parts of data analysis—like cleaning data, merging files, and looking up code snippets—to AI. This left him to focus on what he loves: thinking up questions to ask the dataset. In a world where AI can answer any question humans know the answer to, asking the right questions is becoming increasingly important—a skill Seth isn't just really good at, but also finds joy in. In this episode, Seth walks me through how he used AI to analyze data and write a book in 30 days. We get into: How to create and edit complex charts with AI in seconds Using ChatGPT to brainstorm creative ideas How AI is redefining who can be an artist Why ChatGPT is an excellent tool to get a quick ballpark estimate Developing a sixth sense about when ChatGPT is wrong The power of AI instantly answering hard questions that would normally take months of research We also use ChatGPT to analyze a dataset of Olympic athletes live on the show—in pursuit of finding out which sport I'm best suited for! Mankind is in no position to judge God's actions based on our limited range of vision. Summary on the Issue of Who Makes the RulesMany believe being better than the next guy will be our ticket to Heaven. Others reject the existence of God and Jesus entirely. Even more believe, incorrectly, that there are other paths besides Jesus to find joy beyond the grave (John 14:6). If one rejects the Bible, all these positions are understandable and logical. Of course, the mature Christian will counter with a litany of evidence that there is a Creator, and then add the miraculous to strengthen the argument that He remains active today. However, rarely does that move the needle once one passes the age of a child who is being indoctrinated by parents, peers, and the church. And, even with children, saying a prayer at 8 years old still calls for a demonstrated change in behavior for a lifetime (James 2:14-16). Sometimes God puts trials in life that draw even adults to the cross (as He did with me). God does use preachers, Sunday School teachers, and evangelists, to plant and water the Lord's plan of salvation (1 Cor. 3:7). But, in the end, it all comes down to faith, not facts. And, a relationship with Christ is not a passing thing, it is a lifestyle change.  Hebrews 11:1,6 - Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen... And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Today, Razib talks to Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, author of Who Makes the NBA?: Data-Driven Answers to Basketball's Biggest Questions and Everybody Lies: Big Data, New Data, and What the Internet Can Tell Us About Who We Really Are. Stephens-Davidowitz, formerly of Google and The New York Times, is a freelance data scientist and author. He has a degree in philosophy from Stanford and a PhD in economics from Harvard. In this episode, he discusses his process of writing Who Makes the NBA?, which he crafted in a month using ChatGPT's code interpreter feature, and the biggest insights from his book. Razib probes Stephens-Davidowitz on the relationship between height and athletic ability, and why success in the NBA has the largest heritable component of any major league sport. They also discuss the finding that children of NBA players enjoy a non-genetic advantage in basketball, and why those who make it into the league and succeed are from higher socioeconomic strata. Stephens-Davidowitz also discusses why international basketball is popular in the former Yugoslavia and Lithuania, and how the popularity of volleyball in Iran and Brazil affects the pipeline of talent from those nations. The episode concludes with the author's detailed thoughts about what it was like to write a book assisted by AI, and the feasibility of this sort of content creation over the next decade. Razib and Stephens-Davidowitz discuss the possibility of massive productivity gains from AI over the next few years and the long-term feasibility of writing careers if AI keeps improving at the current rate. Finally, Stephens-Davidowitz lays out his plan to write his next few years' of books at a far faster clip, relying on AI assistance..

Seth Stephens-Davidowitz has unusually written an unusual book. The data analysis included in "Who Makes the NBA?: Data-Driven Answers to Basketball's Biggest Questions" normally would have taken Seth, a trained economist, multiple years of writing and running code. But because of new artificial intelligence tools, he finished the book in just thirty days. And he used AI tools not just for the coding, but also for the artwork, copy editing, and even to write the appendix. He discusses with Cardiff the lessons he learned about using AI, and what such accelerated productivity might mean for the future of the labor market. Then they discuss the actual findings in the book, an investigation into the backgrounds of the basketball players who make it to the NBA and succeed when they get there. How much of success is genetic? What accounts for the NBA's market failures—the traits of players who get paid too much and too little relative to their contributions? Why do some foreign countries have such astonishing success at sending players to the NBA? Does the choice of college really matter for future success? The answers to these questions are surprisingly revealing about the experiences of non-basketball players, and about the relationships between luck, skill, parenting, undiscovered talent, the economy, and other familiar variables. Who Makes the Best Men's Dress Pants? A question many have asked, heck even we were unsure when we started filming. We know that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of men's apparel and men's dress pant brands but we wanted to try 3 that we've been hearing the most about. We'll be testing them in an array of areas including: 1. Every Day Carry (EDC): Which pair of men's dress pants/slacks best handles the everyday items that we keep in our pockets?2. Anti-Ball-Crusher (ABC): This one is a little funny, but also important. Which pair of pants do we think is the most comfortable in the lower regions of our body.3. Sit, Lunge, Squat (SLS): How do we feel that the pants perform in an array of normal tasks such as sitting, lunging, and squatting?4. Care and Material: Do we like the material? How easy is it to keep the pants in top condition? Will they hold up to the test of time and everyday use.  Get $50 off a pair of Mizzen+Main Pants: https://www.talkable.com/x/FaEWTq Shop LuluLemon 'ABC' Pants: https://lululemon.prf.hn/l/6qV4Ppq Shop Nantucket Whaler Apparel: www.nantucketwhaler.com Company BackgroundsCompany 1: Nantucket Whaler: Year Founded - 2017President and CEO - J. In this episode you will hear: (14:03) In this week’s news segment, an article from APNews.com, “Financial Hits Pile Up for Colleges as Some Fight to Survive”, by Collin Binkley and Jeff Amy. COVID-19 has triggered a financial crises for institutions as they refund families for fees related to housing and dining; take major losses from athletic ticket sales; all while facing an uncertain fall semester threatened by lower enrollment and faculty cuts.     Mark and Dave have a spirited 15-minute discussion after the news article about whether we expect college to open in the fall? They state they are only sharing their opinions here but we believe our listeners will find it to be interesting and helpful.   (47:41) We are in Chapter 116 of 171 Answers and Mark explains need-based aid and how it is calculated. We touch on Federal, state and institutional need-based aid. This is the first of two weeks in a row where we will be discussing need-based aid. We also talk about why it is so hard for families to get enough need-based aid to make college affordable.   (01:08:07) This week’s question is from Kim in NYC and she wants to know how to determine the financial health of a private college. Mark goes into a fair amount of depth as he shares about eight sources where you can get this information. This is one you will either want to listen to twice or you will want to take notes. So many colleges are in a precarious financial state and you don’t want to enroll in one that closes or has so many program cuts and faculty layoffs that your education quality is jeopardized. This segment will help you to assess the financial health of a college.   (01:39:55) Mark continues his interview with Taylor King, Assistant Director of Admissions at Columbus State in Who Makes a Good Match for a Regional Public University, Part III   (01:48:05) Mark’s has two recommended resources this week: A panel discussion with three admissions officers on how Covid-19 will impact testing and admissions. Here is the sign up sheet:     Secondly, our second recommended resource is the Strivecan college fair. This four-day fair and workshops will be attended by over 300 colleges in 40 states and 10 countries. The workshops cover such a wide range of topics. The target group is sophomores and juniors:   Don't forget to send your questions related to any and every facet of the college process to: questions@yourcollegeboundkid.com   There is no college spotlight this week as Taylor discusses Columbus State and we don’t have a spotlight when the interview is with an admission officer who discusses his college.   If you enjoy our podcast, would you please do us a favor and share our podcast both verbally and on social media? In this episode you will hear: (15:56) In this week’s news segment, an article from The Chronicle of Higher Education, “How is COVID-19 Changing Prospective Students’ Plans”, by Eric Hoover. With colleges being forced to cancel on-campus programs scheduled for March and April, surveys suggest that the result is that one in six high school seniors who expected to attend a 4-year institution are now considering different paths for the fall.   (31:43) We are in Chapter 115 of 171 Answers and Mark walks us through the various ways to colleges use to evaluate who they will give a merit scholarship to. Once you know how you are evaluated you can successfully aim at the target. Anika shares some very interesting insights about how her own daughter has experienced this process this year, which is her senior year in high school.   (52:05) In this week’s bonus content, Mark shares groundbreaking news on COVID-19’s latest wave on standardized testing. Mark regards this segment as one of the most important segments he has ever done on this podcast, if not the most important. Mark shares three different approaches colleges are taking in regard to the SAT and ACT, but Mark makes a bold prediction that the role of standardized testing will never be the same post Covid-19. He shares his reasons why he believes this. As usual, Anika asks great questions.   (01:18:33) Mark continues his interview with Taylor King, Assistant Director of Admissions at Columbus State in Who Makes a Good Match for a Regional Public University, Part II. In this part, Taylor talks specifically about Columbus State and what their marquee programs are as well as what it would cost to go there for an out of state student. Covid-19 has a lot of families thinking about money and there are some incredible deals to be found at the Regional Public/Masters level universities.   (01:30:12) Mark’s recommended resource of the week is a document that uses Common Data Set information to let you know for specific colleges how many kids they wait list and how many students they take off the wait list for the last 3 years; here is the document:     (01:40:16) College spotlight: Ringling College of Art and Design ()   Don't forget to send your questions related to any and every facet of the college process to: questions@yourcollegeboundkid.com If you enjoy our podcast, would you please do us a favor and share our podcast both verbally and on social media? Why do we believe some people or why are some credible and some not? What makes the difference? This is what Joseph Marks MSc. writes in this article. Messengers are people that share a message, people that talk or post or just communicate. Some are believable and some are not. We can categorise the believable ones into two sectors: the hard messengers and the soft ones. Will the hard one works trough status and authority, the soft one works because people like her. The good things is: you can either be one of them two! I hope that there is some value in here for you and that you will learn how to be credible, believable or whatever :) - This episode of the Self Development with Tactics / SDWT podcast is all about ‘Who Makes the Most Effective Messengers?' an article from the psychologytoday.com website! - https://www.psychologytoday.com/intl/blog/messengers/201909/who-makes-the-most-effective-messengers - I as always hope that you get a lot out of that! - Love you ➠Thank you for being with me! Tom Wheeler: Gutenberg, Google, Darwin & Beyond (Ep. 177) Tom Wheeler joined Joe Miller to discuss Mr. Wheeler's new book 'From Gutenberg to Google: The History of Our Future'.   Bio Chairman Tom Wheeler is a visiting fellow in Governance Studies at Brookings. Wheeler is a businessman, author, and was Chairman of the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) from 2013 to 2017. For over four decades, Wheeler has been involved with new telecommunications networks and services. At the FCC he led the efforts that resulted in the adoption of Net Neutrality, privacy protections for consumers, and increased cybersecurity, among other policies. His chairmanship has been described as, “The most productive Commission in the history of the agency.” During the Obama-Biden Transition of 2008/09 Mr. Wheeler led activities overseeing the agencies of government dealing with science, technology, space and the arts. As an entrepreneur, he started or helped start multiple companies offering innovative cable, wireless and video communications services. He is the only person to be selected to both the Cable Television Hall of Fame and the Wireless Hall of Fame, a fact President Obama joked made him “the Bo Jackson of telecom.” Prior to being appointed Chairman of the FCC by President Obama, Wheeler was Managing Director at Core Capital Partners, a venture capital firm investing in early stage Internet Protocol (IP)-based companies. He is CEO of the Shiloh Group, a strategy development and private investment company specializing in telecommunications services. He co-founded SmartBrief, the Internet’s largest curated information service for vertical markets. From 1976 to 1984 Wheeler was associated with the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) where he was President and CEO from 1979 to 1984. Following NCTA Wheeler was CEO of several high-tech companies, including the first company to offer high-speed delivery to home computers and the first digital video satellite service. From 1992 to 2004 Wheeler served as President and CEO of the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA). Mr. Wheeler wrote Take Command: Leadership Lessons from the Civil War (Doubleday, 2000), and Mr. Lincoln’s T-Mails: The Untold Story of How Abraham Lincoln Used the Telegraph to Win the Civil War (HarperCollins, 2006). His commentaries on current events have been published in the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, and numerous other leading publications. Mr. Wheeler served on President Obama’s Intelligence Advisory Board prior to being named to the FCC. Presidents Clinton and Bush each appointed him a Trustee of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He is the former Chairman and President of the National Archives Foundation, and a former board member of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). He is a proud graduate of The Ohio State University and the recipient of its Alumni Medal. He resides in Washington, D.C. (Brookings, 2018)   News Roundup Elizabeth Warren proposes breaking up big tech Senator Elizabeth Warren announced her proposal last week to reign in tech firms like Google, Amazon, and Facebook. The plan calls for potentially breaking up some mergers as well as new legislation. Senator Warren wants to break up Doubleclick and Google, Facebook and its subsidiaries Instagram and Whats App, and the Amazon/Whole Foods merger. Politico reported Monday that Facebook removed ads that Elizabeth Warren placed on the social network which criticized Facebook and called for its breakup. Facebook backtracked after its attempt to silence Warren backfired. Democrats announce net neutrality bill Nancy Pelosi, on behalf of Democrats, introduced a new net neutrality bill last week. The bill is two pages long and would simply reinstate the 2015 Open Internet rules. The bill’s likely to pass the House where Ds hold the majority, but it faces a more uncertain future in the Senate and getting it over the presidents desk. Trump details plan for government-owned 5G Trump’s reelection campaign is proposing a plan that would give the government control of the nation’s 5G airwaves, allowing it to lease them out to carriers on a wholesale basis. Most carriers think the plan’s unworkable. But the plan is seen as an attempt to attract rural voters with spotty internet service. Huawei sues the U.S. Chinese device manufacturer Huawei, which the U.S. government has accused of spying and violating sanctions against Iran, has now sued the U.S. government for banning the company from doing business in the U.S.  The company filed in a U.S. District Court in Plano, Texas, where the company has its U.S. headquarters. TMobile spent $195k at Trump hotel TMobile’s expenditures at Trump’s DC hotel rose sharply after the company reported that it would be seeking to acquire Sprint. Since April of last year, when the merger was announced, TMobile has spent $195,000 at the hotel. But before the merger announcement, the company said that only two employees had stayed there. The FCC paused its review of the merger last week. This is the third time the FCC has paused the 180-day shot clock, which is now on day 122. The merger review has been going on for 8 months. It’s not clear why it was paused this time. But the hotel expenditures may have had something to do with it—especially since the White House actually approved the deal.
