It seems the Government's spending far less than promised on a highly effective methamphetamine programme. It promised to spend $38-million this Parliamentary term to expand the Te Ara Oranga programme to another four thousand people. But figures released to RNZ show it's spent less than a fifth of that. The programme has a 34% harm reduction rate. Drug Detection Agency chief executive Glenn Dobson told Tim Dower that that's significant for any rehabilitation programme - particularly for meth. He says it's an incredibly difficult drug to rehabilitate, as there's both a physical and psychological dependency, and results indicate the programme's been successful across the community. Born in a tiny town bordering Canada only five minutes from the legendary falls, Nicole says she had an eye for beauty at a young age, and that included poetry. She can remember from an age as young as six, being selected as part of the city’s "young authors club." She was interested in lyric poetry from the time she was a pre-teen into her early-to-mid twenties, and moved into creative writing and fiction in her late twenties and early thirties. We will be talking about her book, Addictarium which was penned while Nicole spent time in an intensive rehabilitation center due to a devastating heroin addiction, and while this is a fictional memoir, many of the themes and tales are based around her own experiences during her two year stay in the notorious Queens, New York “therapeutic community.” You asked for it and we deliver.

Most of his ups and down in life were in sobriety.  He got sober at 17 and is still that way 28+ years later.  For people that think young people haven't done enough personal damage to need to get sober (these are the “I spilled more than you drank”, types) or for those that think young people have to relapse at least six times to “get it”, listen up.  Chris S. has a story of hope and recovery that professionals, parents and young people need to hear.  Join us this Sunday night to hear Chris S.

Join us for a lively discussion with Ray Chlebicki, the former national sales manager for Roxand Labs, one of the three largest manufacturers of methadone.  Methadone, originally a drug developed by the Germans during the Second World War as a synthetic opiate pain reliever, has been used in this country both as a pain reliever and as a substitution therapy for heroin addiction.  Many have found successful recovery and others vehemently disagree with its use for this purpose.  Ray will offer us some history, some facts and debunk some myths.

Julia Fisher talks to Zvi Randelman and Alex. If you are a regular listener, you will remember that two weeks ago we heard from Zvi Randelman. A Messianic Jewish believer who is the pastor of a congregation in Jerusalem, he is also the founder and director of a drug and alcohol rehab centre called Beit HaYeshua. Here he welcomes both Jews and Arabs. Zvi makes it clear from the start that the rehab programme he offers is based entirely on faith, namely faith in Jesus or Yeshua, as He is known in Israel, and His power to break the bondage of addiction. When I visited Beit HaYeshua recently, I met a number of men currently in the programme including Alex, a Jew originally from the former Soviet Republic. Our aim is to build bridges... To build bridges of understanding and support, in a spirit of reconciliation, between believers (both Jewish and Arab) in the Holy Land (Israel and the Palestinian Areas) and Christians worldwide. olivetreefund.org beithayeshua.org
