There are intriguing similarities between the way the condition of schizophrenia and a brain with a dominant left hemisphere can distort our perceptions of reality. In this episode we examine those similarities using the inspiring story of Elyn R. Saks, who tells about her lifetime struggle with schizophrenia in her wonderful book THE CENTER CANNOT HOLD. Iain McGilchrist, in his monumental work THE MATTER WITH THINGS, suggests that modern western culture is dominated by left hemisphere thinking. Could this orientation be muddling our minds and causing the unique kind of madness we find in contemporary culture?

Anuradha Sridhar had a successful career for over 15 years and was viewed as one of the strongest, most resilient women by all those who knew her. She had her first brush with mental illness well into her thirties, triggered by a couple of traumatic event in her personal and professional life. Unfortunately for her, it manifested itself in a very public way so there was nowhere for her to hide. It took her over two years to get the right kind of help in terms of a correct diagnosis and treatment. Fortunately for her, she is blessed with an immediate family who support her even through the darkest of times. This conversation will open your eyes to what it is like to live with debilitating mental illness. It will also offer hope and practical advice on what to do if you or someone you know is suffering. The hyperlinks to some of the things she mentions are for your information. Anu's Facebook page, the online CBT website Joyable, Elyn Saks' Ted Talk on the importance of work in the healing process of a mental health patient, and understanding the impact of vicarious trauma.

I’m honoured to be joined today by one of the UK’s most impressive speakers and mental health advocates in the form of Jonny Benjamin MBE, who made headlines after sparking a national campaign called Find Mike – with the goal of tracking down the man who talked him down from a bridge. Jonny talks candidly about his own experience with schizoaffective disorder, which has led to him hearing a voice in his head that used to take on the form of an angel, before becoming the devil. He’s passionate about mental health and how we all need to talk more openly, and you can find the charity he founded, Beyond, on wearebeyond.org.uk. He’s also created a mental health festival for schools called Now and Beyond.Jonny also tells me how his relatively conservative Jewish upbringing made it harder to talk about his issues, while also feeling he had to keep his homosexuality secret. We also spoke about fellow schizophrenia sufferer Elyn Saks, whose Ted Talk you can find here.Follow me on Twitter and Instagram, both andrewgold_ok, and have a browse of the different perks you can get from a membership on patreon.com/andrewgold Click here to go ads-free and support the show See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This conversation on Ian Webber's recommendation of The Center Cannot Hold by Elyn Saks explores mental illness, the work of the critic, and the importance of bridge-building in relationships. Virgil speaks with Dr. Elyn Saks, J.D., Ph.D. Among many things, Dr. Saks is a scholar, a mental health lawyer, an author, a Macarthur Fellow, a professor, and a life-long advocate for improving mental health care. She is a graduate of Oxford University, where she studied philosophy, she is also a graduate of Yale University where she earned her Juris-doctorate degree and is currently completing a Ph. D. in psychoanalysis. In 2002, Dr. Saks published the book, Refusing Care: Forced Treatment and the Rights of the Mentally Ill, in which she wrote, “It has been said that how a society treats its least well-off members speaks volumes about its humanity. If so, our treatment of the mentally ill suggests that American society is inhumane: swinging between over-intervention and utter neglect, we sometimes force extreme treatments on those who do not want them, and at other times discharge mentally ill patients who do want treatment without providing adequate resources for their care in the community.” In 2007, Dr. Saks published her acclaimed memoir, The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness, which chronicles her own personal experience of schizophrenia that began in her teen years. In 2012, Dr. Saks gave the TED talk, “A tale of mental illness - from the inside” which now has nearly 4-million views. Dr. Saks' contributions to the betterment of our mental health system are countless and it is a great honor to have her on our show today. It is going to be a fascinating talk!

William Jiang, MLS had a severe paranoid psychotic break from reality at nineteen years of age and now is quite sane and knows how to achieve and maintain mental health, naturally. He wants people to think about how to live healthier in this society that is getting mentally and physically sicker. This is why he is the author of 69 books in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French which have gone to #1 in the USA and have sold in Canada, the United Kingdom, Spain, Mexico, Argentina, France, Germany, India, Australia, Italy, and Japan. He is a former Columbia Psychiatry Medical Library Chief, designer, and he is a speaker of English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese.Mr. Jiang's critically-acclaimed autobiography is "A Schizophrenic Will: A Story of Madness, A Story of Hope." Mr Jiang and his intense 25+ year struggle with schizophrenia is iconoclastic because he challenges us to think differently about stereotypes of mental illness. His peers would be world movers like Philip K. Dick, John Nash, and Elyn Saks. Most movies and media news paint one-dimensional, thinly drawn caricatures of mentally ill people, instilling fear. Refreshingly, words that could describe Mr. Jiang's life and work include: brilliant, passionate, artistic, profound, knowledgeable, inspirational, and even "wise teacher". Mr. Jiang’s magnum opus in the field of psychiatry is "The Medical Librarian's Guide to Natural Mental Health: Anxiety, Bipolar, Depression, Schizophrenia, and Digital Addiction: Nutrition, and Complementary Therapies, 4th edition" where Mr. Jiang shares deep insights into non-pharmaceutical natural strategies that are all-too-needed in this world of Big Macs and XBoxes.- http://www.mentalhealthbooks.net/Metamorphus is an organization dedicated to helping people using modern day tools in a world that's always changing. The Center Cannot Hold is a book about Elyn Saks’ journey living with schizophrenia. Elyn has survived decades of learning to accept, and living with, her illness. Her book takes the reader through her journey of diagnosis, treatment, and living day-to-day life. She struggles with whether she is defined by her illness, or whether her illness is a part of her. She struggles through the decision to take medication and whether to get ongoing treatment. Throughout the book, Elyn describes the impact of her illness on her personal and professional life, on the people around her, and on her family. We cannot recommend this book enough, as it provides a glimpse into this too often silent struggle, and promotes compassion for all who suffer with the many challenges of mental illness.INDEX00:00-02:08Intro and Background of the Book02:09-07:44Overview of Elyn’s Professional Life07:45-12:53Schizophrenia: The Illness12:54-20:03Elyn’s Diagnosis20:04-25:33Schizophrenia: The Center Cannot Hold25:34-30:24The Fight with Medication and Her Illness30:25-35:16Accepting Medication35:17-42:43Medication: Side Effects42:44-46:04Disclosing Her Mental Illness46:05-51:57The Trauma of Mental Illness51:58-56:54Research into the Human Brain56:55-59:35Why Elyn Wrote the Book59:36-1:00:24Outro and Next EpisodeVisit www.modernathenas.com for links to all episodes.Subscribe to our podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play or YouTube.Follow us on Twitter/Facebook @modernathenasFollow us on Instagram @themodernathenaspodcastSend us feedback or leave a review!
