In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to The Artist Kitty (@kitty_arttist71) who is showing in the New Art Fair 2024, at the Truman Brewery, London, from 27-29 September.I have known The Artist Kitty for over 25 years, all that time and more she has battled severe mental health, namely Paranoid Schizophrenia; sometimes ahead of the battle, others not so. She was previously very creative, working for a screen printers', and drawing & painting. I had tried to encourage her to revisit it many times, but confidence and change of route had become a challenge. Then at the start of lock-down, out of the blue, she ordered several canvases, brushes and an array of paints and started painting. Within no time, she developed her own style; that just ooze happiness & positivity. She now says that painting is as beneficial as any medication; the BIRDS represent this new-found freedom, FLOWERS her growth and the CAGE that occasionally appears, is her condition... That seems to show itself a lot less nowadays.I have tried so many times to get Kitty on the pod, but her lack of confidence has always got the upper hand... Until today! Kitty has never shown her work outside of Instagram, where she has developed a much appreciated following; from 27-29 September, I will be showing/selling her work at the New Artist Fair at in the Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, London, E1 – For more details go to https://www.newartistfair.com/ To Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: www.patreon/ministryofarts For full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.orgEmail: ministryofartsorg@gmail.comSocial Media: @ministryofartsorg Hosted on Acast. Life Coaching: A New Dimension in Counseling Today we discuss the recent upsurge in life coaching, and feature one of the leaders in this emerging field, Angela Poch, and one of her wonderful students, Lorna Bird. Lorna Bird Angela Poch (see featured photo) is a Registered Professional Counsellor (RPC) with the Canadian Professional Counselling Association, certified Master Life Coach, and TEAM-CBT Level 4 Advanced Therapist and Trainer. She has been teaching health and wellness for over 30 years and was Vice President of Education with the Adventist Association of Health & Wellness Coaching. She has written several articles and books on health and wellness including, “The Truth Will Set You Free.” She has a YouTube channel (@talkingteamcbt) interviewing clinicians about their journeys with TEAM-CBT. She also has a channel on psychology and health (@bodymindhealth4u). Lorna Bird holds a Diploma of Counseling from Australia and is a certified Life and Health Coach. She is also a Level 3 certified TEAM-CBT therapist https://www.yestohealth.com.au/ Angela and Lorna will give us the true scoop on coaching. To get started, what IS coaching, and how does it differ from psychotherapy? I am aware that our podcast goes worldwide, so the answer may differ depending on the country or state where you live. According to AI, “In California, the term "psychotherapist" is defined in the Civil Code to include a number of mental health professionals, including psychologists, psychiatrists, and clinical social workers. In general, anyone who provides psychotherapy or counseling in California, whether in person, by phone, or online, must be licensed.in California.” Coaching is quite different. Again, according to AI, “In California, there are no specific state-mandated requirements for individuals to use the term "coach" or practice life coaching, meaning anyone can technically call themselves a coach without obtaining a specific license.” Angela Poch resides in Canada, and she has been a leading and beloved member of the TEAM-CBT community. She emphasized several differences between a “coach” and a licensed mental health professional: Diagnosis: A coach does not diagnose clients into the familiar DSM categories of “mental disorders,” such as “Major Depressive Illness,” “Bipolar Disorder,” “Schizophrenia,” or any of the hundreds of “mental disorders” listed in the DSM. In the same vein, licensed mental health professionals will typically screen for suicidal thoughts and urges, and will treat suicidal individuals, but this is forbidden territory for coaches. Purpose / aims of coaching: The purpose or aims of coaching do not, as a rule, involve delving into your past to search for the “cause(s)” of your problems, such as adverse childhood experiences or traumas. Instead, the focus of coaching is primarily on making changes in the here-and-now in how you think, feel, and relate to others. This might involve learning to challenge distorted negative thoughts so you will think and feel more positively about your life, as well as how to relate to others more skillfully. Coaching is goal-oriented and forward-moving rather than dwelling on the past. Of course, good counsellors and licensed mental health professionals may also provide tools to move forward as well, so there can be overlap. Training / credentialing: Because coaching is so new, there are not yet any widely accepted standards or requirements for calling yourself a “coach.” There is a varying degree of training to be “certified,” which might just consist of watching a couple videos to 100's of hours of supervision with the ICF (International Coaching Federation), and everything in between. Here's a generalized diagram Angela created to help with further clarification. NOTE: many TEAM-CBT therapists also are client/goal focused as well as and will often use coaching-style tools. Angela described a 20-hour “Feeling Great Coach” certification program she has developed. Her program is based almost entirely on TEAM-CBT and includes a final exam you must pass to get certified. She also offers a TEAM-CBT Masterclass & Mentoring Program for both coaches as well as therapists that includes live training twice a month, online practice groups, case consultation in small groups, one-on-one mentoring sessions, and personal work as well. She said this integrates seamlessly with FGI's Fast Track program, any of David's intensives, or the Tuesday group for those who want more individualized support and training. Lorna enthusiastically described her experiences learning from many of Angela's training programs. I (David) have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Angela for many years now, starting with her attendance at a number of my intensives and two-day TEAM-CBT training programs in Canada. Lorna is really enjoying the Masterclass Mentoring Program and recommends you take Angela's free workshop called “Effective Compassion.” You can check it out at www.teamcbt.ca/effectivecompassion How do I, David, feel about coaching? I am, for the most part, enthusiastic, but with a few reservations. I would have to confess that I spent 5 years in medical school, four more years in psychiatric residency, plus two years in post-doctoral research training at top institutions, but did not learn much at all, if anything, that has really helped me treat human beings who are hurting. Of course, I did learn how to prescribe drugs for those with severe difficulties, like Bipolar I Disorder, or Paranoid Schizophrenia, but that definitely did not require years and years of intensive medically oriented training. All I ever really wanted to do was psychotherapy. In my last year or so of post-doctoral psychiatric training, I discovered cognitive therapy, although it was not a part of the required curriculum, and learned quite a lot that has been really helpful in working with patients. But for the most part, all of the extensive medical training I received had very little, at best, to do with how I now work with patients, and an awful lot of what I do was things I had to figure out for myself. I do have great respect for psychology training (either clinical psychology or PsyD training), because of the emphasis on research and critical thinking, but I do think there is lots of room for new approaches such as coaching to emerge and evolve, and it seems to be the case that more people than ever are still struggling with depression, anxiety, addictions, rage, and more. Like any field, I think coaching is vulnerable to misuse by narcissistic individuals who wish to deceive or exploit the general public, and individuals who are naïve or unaware of the background or training of their therapists are perhaps at great risk of abuse. But I would also say that this problem is in no way limited to coaching, since a great many licensed mental health professionals have been charged and convicted of all manner of unethical conduct and as well as malpractice over the years as well. That's why I'm enthusiastic about responsible leaders who, like Angela Poch, are blazing new trails and setting the bar high for those who wish to enter the field of life coaching. I'm also delighted to see that for years now, the Feeling Good Institute (FGI, feelinggoodinsititute.com) has included coaches in their superb training programs as well, and many high profile individuals you may be familiar with, like our beloved Professor Mark Noble, have taken and benefit from TEAM-CBT certification via the FGI. Paranoid Schizophrenia: Learning and Managing this Condition Paranoid schizophrenia is a complex and often debilitating mental illness that affects approximately 0.5% of the population. Portrayed by a combination of hallucinations, delusions, and disorganised thinking, it can drastically impact a person's ability to function in daily life. In this article, we delve into the essential aspects of paranoid schizophrenia, including its symptoms, causes, and available treatments. The term “paranoid schizophrenia” is no longer used or recognised by experts. Instead, they tend to recognise schizophrenia as a specific disease in a spectrum of related conditions involving psychosis. The American Psychiatric Association and the World Health Organization (WHO) removed paranoid schizophrenia from their respective diagnostic manuals in 2013. Who does it affect? Schizophrenia typically occurs at varying ages depending on biological sex, with no significant rate differences. It commonly begins between ages 15 and 25 for individuals assigned male at birth and between 25 and 35 for those assigned female at birth. While rare, schizophrenia can also affect children; the condition tends to be more severe in these cases. In infrequent instances, doctors may diagnose schizophrenia in someone under 13 years of age. This is called Childhood-onset schizophrenia (COS). Less than 1 in 40,000 children get this diagnosis, according to a 2019 review. Because childhood-onset schizophrenia is so rare, it is not well understood and difficult to diagnose, and until 1980, autism was then called “childhood schizophrenia.” Symptoms of Paranoid Schizophrenia Positive signs – any change in behaviour or thoughts, such as hallucinations or delusions. 1. Hallucinations: can involve the five sensory perceptions (Sight, Sound, Taste, Smell, or Touch) whose experience is not based on reality. Auditory hallucinations, such as hearing voices, are the most common form of paranoid schizophrenia. These hallucinations can be distressing and may contribute to the formation of delusional belief. 2. Delusions: Individuals with paranoid schizophrenia experience persistent and irrational beliefs that are not based on truth. These delusions often involve themes of persecution, conspiracy, or grandiosity. They may believe people on TV or in newspaper articles are communicating messages to them alone. They may assume that there are hidden messages in the colours of cars passing on the street or find different meanings in everyday events or occurrences. 3. Paranoia: is characterised by a pattern of behaviour in which a person experiences distrust and suspicion towards others, leading them to act accordingly. Delusions and hallucinations are two symptoms that may involve paranoia. They may exhibit emotions of grandiosity, believing they have special powers or are destined for greatness. 4. Disorganised thinking: People with this condition often struggle with organising their thoughts and expressing themselves coherently. Some people need help concentrating and will drift from one idea to another. Their speech may be tangential, illogical, or contain invented words. 5. Social withdrawal: Due to their paranoid thoughts and disorganised thinking, individuals with paranoid schizophrenia may isolate themselves from social interactions, leading to a decline in personal relationships and overall functioning. However, becoming socially withdrawn and unresponsive or changing sleeping patterns can be mistaken for an adolescent “Life Phase”. Negative symptoms experienced by people living with schizophrenia can include: They do not want to look after themselves and their needs, such as not caring about personal hygiene. The negative symptoms of schizophrenia can often lead to relationship problems with friends and family, as they.............. learn more

Growing up in Canada, her father's delusions and paranoia gave Julia Shaw a front-row seat into an alternate reality Believing "they” were out to get him – including everyone from aliens to the Bin Laden family – he would later email her, warning that she too was targeted by those monitoring him. He believed that doctors too were part of the conspiracy - so has never had a diagnosis from a psychiatrist. Witnessing her father experiencing a parallel "reality" inspired Julia to look into the mind and she had a "lightbulb moment" at university studying psychology when she first heard a description of paranoid schizophrenia. We hear from Julia and her mum as they meet up, driving through Canada. The well-known "positive" signs of a psychotic episode like hallucinations, paranoia and deluded thoughts can feel frightening to witness but Julia learns how the some families find it hardest to live with the "negative" symptoms like a Iack of motivation and difficulty in concentrating. Julia talks to families who understand the demands of living with someone who has serious delusions – to hear what helped them to look after themselves as well as their loved one. We hear from Philippa whose son had his first episode of psychosis when he was at university. Although he now has the right medication to control his symptoms he struggles to motivate himself and a troubling side effect is weight gain which puts him at risk of physical health problems. Kate was only 11 when her cool, older brother Sean first showed the signs of schizophrenia. After numerous spells in hospital she remembers how he struggled to look after himself back in the community and became homeless, sometimes going missing Both women found support from Rethink Mental Illness, a charity which helps people severely affected by mental illness to improve their lives. Kirsty was 8 years old when she started going to workshops with her dad at the Our Time charity, which supports any child with a parent affected by mental illness. She says that role play and talking openly with others about mental health helped to prepare her for when her dad had a psychotic episode on her 13th birthday: although it was frightening she recognised the signs and knew that they wouldn't last. Another concern for Julia was the increased risk for family members who might inherit a disorder like paranoid schizophrenia. Dr Rick Adams explains how the risk is higher - at around 10%, it does mean there's a much higher likelihood that she hasn't inherited it. One voice Julia feels is missing is that of the person who hears voices and believes them: she hasn't been able to reach her father. Instead she talks to Ashley who's 25 and is living with a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia. Ashley explains how her voices were always male and it it's not a good idea for loved ones to tell a person having hallucinations that they're not real: they have to find this out for themselves. She says that educating herself about mental illness and her faith have helped her to keep calm, along with support from her family. Like the other families she's spoken to Julia feels guilt about her father and wonders if she could have done more to help him - but hearing about support from charities makes her hopeful. And despite all the difficulties, she also recognises how he has passed onto her a love of learning and to stand up for herself. Presenter: Julia Shaw Producer: Paula McGrath
We met Wendy at the evergreen cemetery in Portland just a beautiful cemetery located in the central part of town on a gorgeous Wednesday morning blue sky nice light breeze green bright very calm and comforting atmosphere. Wendy is a lovely person with three children of her own and getting to that time in her life when she starts to think about grandchildren, with still one more son in college. See you she's the youngest of five and is a true Mainer. She shared her story of growing up with a tough father and abusive father and the impact that had on the family life in a but also a family of strong women with her mother organist for the church and one of those real superhero 1970s kind of moms she's now a yoga instructor and becoming a health coach and is on her own journey to really finding her self. Long before he brutally murdered his wife Katie - crushing her head and disemboweling her on March 18th, 1993 - Ed was really struggling with his mental health. He'd been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia a year earlier. He'd been really sick long before that. He's been battling powerful hallucinations and delusions for over a year. He'd been tormented by visions of things like a giant rabbit. He was convinced the devil was using his wife to keep him from salvation. He thought he could read messages from god by studying his spit. Despite all this, instead of getting proper treatment, he was encouraged to not take his antipsychotic medication. He was told his ills could be prayed away. He was told he was cured by a quack chiropractor who thought he could ease Ed's troubled mind by pulling on his toes and making him drink blackstrap molasses. Seriously. Today's episode is a fascinating, ridiculous, darkly funny at times, so sad in others, cautionary tale to remind us all to take our mental health very seriously. Wally Lamb is the author of not one, but six New York Times best-selling novels that speak to generations of readers who recognize their own struggles within his characters. He was twice selected for Oprah’s Book Club with She’s Come Undone and I Know This Much Is True, a current HBO limited series starring Mark Ruffalo as identical twin brothers, one with paranoid schizophrenia. The human struggle and the power of story to heal inspire Wally, a former high school English teacher. The work he’s done teaching writing to women prisoners in Connecticut and editing two volumes of their essays most embodies the idea of the healing power of storytelling. Wally was born to a working-class family in Norwich, Connecticut. He began writing in 1981, the year he became a father, and credits his ability to write in female voices with having grown up with older sisters in a neighborhood largely populated by girls. Wally and his wife Christine live in northeastern Connecticut and in New York City and are the parents of three sons and three grandchildren. Wally’s characters are imperfect people seeking to become better people, stories that move beyond the boundaries and limitations of his own experience to better understand the lives of others. You can’t help but see yourself in his stories and be moved. In this episode, I talk about not coping too well with the COVID-19 pandemic, and the increase in certain psychotic symptoms.
In this week's episode, I talk about how difficult it can be managing relationships when you have a psychotic mental illness, like schizoaffective disorder. I talk about issues such as mistrust, paranoia, and delusions, but hopefully also emphasise that it's very possible to have good relationships despite this.
In this episode, I talk about how harmful it is to use medical terms like "psychotic" and "delusional", as insults, and just how this contributes to the stigma those of us with psychotic mental illness face. I also talk a little bit about media representation of psychotic mental illness, and will be discussing that in more depth at a later date.
In this episode, I talk about the stigma around "appearing well", and stereotypes relating to mental illness, particularly psychotic conditions.
In this episode, I discuss some of my main symptoms, and how my psychiatrist determined that I had Schizoaffective Disorder.
In this episode, I explain how I came to be diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. I also explain many of my symptoms, and some psychotic episodes I experienced which led me to get further help.

Darlene A Quincy, "My journey with LegalShield started about 16 years ago as a member. My late husband, David Quincy, was introduced to this company by a fellow friend, Jay Newsome. We thought we were doing him a favor by signing up for the membership. Mr. Quincy was a LegalShield Associate for 14 years, until Monday, March 24, 2014, following his briefing, a tragedy changed our lives forever. David was stabbed from behind by my nephew, (my sister’s son). David passed away from his injuries, and my nephew who is still in the legal system was later diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia. David’s only mission was to help a young man, who had been lost and was hurting because of the loss of his own mother and father due to cancer. See, hurt people hurt other people, and our goal was to have him come live with us to help get him back on a better path. In the face of adversity, I had a choice to make. Would I continue what David often spoke about leaving a legacy for his family or would I allow someone else to live out the dreams he placed on his vision board. This personal story is now my testimony because I needed legal advice immediately. One day I decided to attend Mr. Alistair Edwards’ group. The following Monday, I showed up to the Monday night briefing and declared I would be carrying forward the Quincy legacy. I had no idea how I could do this with an already full load, working full time, having children to take care of, participating in activities and so much more. I’m busy, so are others too, but they find a way. This business allowed me to grow in so many ways by doing a few repeatable things. I jumped by faith into this business… [ Source ]

Tonight's special guest is Mary Ann Goughler, from Sharpsville, PA, an abuse survivor and advocate as she struggles with Paranoid Schizophrenia, PTSD and depression. She says, "I have overcome a great deal and share my personal story of growth so I can give hope to all people who suffer from any type of Mental Health issues. They/we can lead full and productive lives. I am living proof." A wife, mother, artist, writer, and poet, Mary Ann has struggled with the stigma and challenges of Schizophrenia. She's created a moving video that expresses her experience which we've posted on the NAASCA web site. "Schizophrenia~Learning To Thrive" is a video biography of living and thriving with Schizophrenia, and Mary reminds us, "This is National Suicide Month (September). I want to offer hope / support for all. Thank you in advance." Lynn Tolson, another NAASCA family member, said it well: "Wow, MaryAnn, what a well-done video. I see you incorporated your fantastic art into it. You really gave your all; what a gift you are sharing with survivors and others who may struggle with mental health. Thank you for showing us how you cope, create, and thrive. Very inspiring." We couldn't agree more! Mary reports she also has "a terrific dog that helps me get thru the day, and I'd like to offer support/hope to all those who suffer from mental health concerns, while trying to lift the stigma attached to it. I love life, try to live it to the fullest and have lots of stories to tell." She encourages others to follow her BLOG, "In a Nutshell" - marushka-g.blogspot.com - and concludes, "In the years to come, this work may help prevent and better treat the illness."
