What are we observing versus what are we supposed to see, in other words, how (and how much) is dogma directing our interpretations? We explore this concept this month when we delve into Duncan McLeish's PhD work on the transport and deposition of gold at the Brucejack Deposit (Canada). In a world where aqueous complexation has long been considered the only viable means of transporting gold to depositional sites in hydrothermal ore-forming systems, Duncan et al. found that rejecting dogma was of the utmost importance. For example, a major weakness of the Au transport in solution hypothesis is that it cannot readily explain the formation of ultrahigh-grade gold veins when transporting Au at ppb levels. ...so how do “bonanza” veins contain weight-percent levels of gold in some epithermal and orogenic deposits? ...what are colloids and flocculation? ...why is this research both exciting and important? In part one of our month-long look at the Dead films by George A. Romero, David and Duane discuss Romero's 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead and Tom Savini's 1990 remake. Romero's original was innovative and evocative not only as a horror movie, but just as a film, and demonstrates what can be achieved through the medium and the limitations of budget. Savini's remake still stands out as a good film, but our appreciation for it is mixed: while we enjoy some of the changes Savini and Romero (as screenwriter) made, others were less effective. But first, this week: Duane listened to The Projection Booth's epic episode on the Marx Brother's Duck Soup, watched a bunch of Richard Ayoade videos on YouTube (but especially this one), and listened to one of his favorite bands, mewithoutYou. David listened to Duncan McLeish and Andy Blockley's new podcast Opera Omnia, season 1 of which is exploring the films of Michael Mann, starting with his first film, Thief (1981); watched Childish Gambino's (aka Donald Glover) video for his song "Sweatpants," watched KaptainKristian's exploration of Childish Gambino in "Storytelling Through Hip-Hop," and watch episodes 1-5 of Marvel's Luke Cage on Netflix. Next week, David and Duane will be exploring Romero's 1978 Dawn of the Dead along with Zack Snyder's 2004 remake. Most times when you wonder how a movie got made, it’s due to the inherent awfulness of the film. In the case of Hausu, it’s a minor miracle. Hausu is weird, free-wheeling haunted house hijinx, and, in the spirit of the movie itself, we discuss the strangeness of the film’s plot, how a movie like this DID get made, subtle allegories involving rooms filled with blood and young girls, the downside of witch-cat ownership and whether or not Eddie Deezen was in Midnight Madness.
