To properly tell the story of the Miami Heat becoming one of the NBA's most prestigious franchises, you have to start in the Spring of 1995. Pat Riley was on the last year of his contract with the New York Knicks, where he was the Head Coach for four years. Riley had taken the Knicks from sub .500 to Eastern Conference Champions in just a few years, and he wanted a compensation package that properly reflected his value. Riley asked Knicks management for a big contract, a hefty ownership stake, and total control of the team's basketball operations.The Knicks balked at Riley's demands, so he shifted his attention to Miami. The Heat - who joined the NBA as an expansion team in 1989 - failed to win more than 42 games in their first seven years in the league. Mickey Arison took control of the team in 1995 and didn't want to settle for mediocrity. Through a mutual friend, Arison started talking to Riley while he finished out his last year in New York. Riley presented a similar list of demands to Arison. He wanted a $50 million contract, a 10% ownership in the team upon signing, an additional 10% over time, a limo service to and from games, and a $500 per-diem. In addition to all of that, he asked that the Heat buy his homes in LA and New York. Arison agreed, and Riley took the command in 1995-96.During his first season in Miami, Riley traded for 30-year-old Tim Hardaway, a 3x All-Star who some thought was over the hill. On this episode, Hardaway takes us back to his first days in Miami and the Heat's breakout 1996-97 campaign. Joining Hardaway in South Beach in 1997 were Alonzo Mourning, Dan Majerle, Jamal Mashburn and PJ Brown. They won 61 games and had the #1 defense in the league. However, it was not just about the two points for Edmonton last night, the performance as a whole was positive in many ways with players throwing the monkeys away and the special teams showing up. Unfortunately, it was not all positive with Evander Kane leaving the game with a devastating injury. After making contact with Patrick Maroon's skate, Kane rushed to the bench with a forearm injury that could leave him out of the lineup for a while. In episode 96 of GT247's Tigers in 20, host and lead writer Christian Fowler, GT247 digital content producer Kenny Stubblefield and GT247 vet Jonah Jordan discuss the latest in Memphis football and basketball. To begin the episode, the crew discusses the Memphis-SMU postponement, which was the Tigers' third consecutive game to be pushed back. With the game against the Mustangs off, Memphis won't play their next game until Sunday against Tulsa which is 20 days from their last game. Fowler, Stubblefield and Jordan break down the positives and negatives of the 20-day layoff, and they also explain how difficult this will make the rest of the season. The UCF game was rescheduled, but now Memphis, SMU, Temple and the AAC have to figure out how/when to reschedule the games. Memphis' last scheduled game against Houston is in March, so they will have a month and a half to play the remaining 17 games on schedule. The trio breaks down how and why this can be problematic moving forward. Next, Fowler and Stubblefield talk about former Tigers James Wiseman and Precious Achiuwa. Wiseman has been a standout for the Golden State Warriors this season, and Achiuwa made his first start with the Miami Heat on Tuesday night. Achiuwa finished his first career start with a career high in minutes (36), points (17) and rebounds (13), and he showed that he can be a viable weapon for the defending Eastern Conference Champions moving forward. Finally, Fowler and Jordan move on to Memphis football and discuss the transfers of Obinna Eze and T.J. Carter. They give their opinions on what the transfers mean, and they also explain who they believe could step up to fill their respective roles next season. Socceroos goalkeeper Danny Vukovic made a strong start to life in the UEFA Europa League, keeping a clean sheet for KRC Genk in their 2-0 win against Malmo. And with not a lot of other news worth mentioning, let’s take a look ahead to a couple of important games to be played on Saturday. Firstly to the Victorian NPL2 Grand Final between Altona Magic and Dandenong City. Altona were the Western Conference Champions and Dandenong City the Eastern Conference Champions, both finishing well ahead of the 2nd place teams. The game will kickoff at 5pm at ABD Stadium. Next in Football South Coast’s District League Grand Final, where Premiers Coniston will play 3rd placed Warilla Wanderers at 3pm. And finally in the NPL Championship Series, the 2nd Semi Final between Sydney Olympic and Campbelltown will take place from 3pm.
