Today's guest is Allison Scott, who works as Senior Acquisitions Editor in the book publishing arm of ASCD, a Washington, DC-based nonprofit education association that provides professional learning products and services for K-12 educators. That is quite a mouthful! What it boils down to is that Allison works on books that help teachers and school administrators in the K-12 system do their job better. For non-US listeners, K-12 means from kindergarten to 12th grade, and includes children aged roughly between 5 and 18 years old. This is the first time I'm interviewing a publishing professional who's not active in the trade publishing world. But not only did I want to interview Allison because we have a special connection that I'll mention at the beginning of the interview, I also wanted to learn more about her specialty field, which was completely unknown territory for me before I interviewed her. Always be learning! Curious to hear more? Listen to my conversation with Allison Scott. NB: Allison wanted to make the correction that her company, ASCD, provided professional learning services in Saudi Arabia. During the interview she had mistakenly said that it was the UAE. Join Sal Daher's Investment Syndicate: Click to Join Frank Ferguson had a knack for building companies. He headed Bose at a time of rapid growth and built Curriculum Associates into a great success. Frank Ferguson’s angel investing was unusual in that he invested in just a few startups but lavished support on those few. The results were great. Frank was active well into his nineties but passed away recently; this relaunch of an interview I recorded with him is a memorial for his life of achievement and passion. It’s loaded with lessons for angels and founders. Rest in peace, Frank Ferguson. My favorite observation from the conversation with Frank Fergusson neatly encapsulates his recipe for success as an investor: “You can get sucked in and fall in love with a lot of things, but then you have to ask, "Are these the guys who can actually make it happen?” What are the odds that these guys can keep together, not fight, get over it, be successful, run things correctly, not fall in love with their own things so much that they lose track of the financial realities of the business? Can they sell?” Click Here to read the transcript of the interview. TOPICS DISCUSSED INCLUDE: Yes, That Bose Corporation! Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning podcast, episode #86 with Peter Cohen, who was appointed the eighth president of University of Phoenix in April, 2017[i], bringing more than 20 years of leadership in the education and learning science sectors. Watch the YouTube interview here. My name is Andrea Samadi, I’m a former educator who created this podcast to bring the most current neuroscience research, along with high performing experts who have risen to the top of their field, with specific strategies or ideas that you can implement immediately, whether you are an educator, or is the corporate space, to take your results to the next level.I am thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with Peter Cohen today. As the 8th President of the University of Phoenix, Peter has been focused on further accelerating the University-wide transformation in service of its vision to be recognized as the most trusted provider of career-relevant higher education for working adults. After 20 years of leadership in the field of education, he brings a deep understanding of the potential for technology to improve the quality of education—an understanding he has developed through a career focused on innovation in service of students and improved learning outcomes.Prior to his work at the University of Phoenix, many of us from the Educational Publishing world, would know Peter when he was the CEO of Pearson Education’s School Group, (where I first met him) or Group President of U.S. Education at McGraw-Hill, overseeing the company's U.S. K-12 and higher education businesses where he helped the organization reimagine learning in the digital world. Peter was on the forefront of change in the education industry, driving the both company’s roll out of multiple technology tools, which is why I reached out to him, at a time when technology has never been so important in our lives.Welcome Peter! Thank you so much for being available with your time to share your knowledge and vision for the state of education, at a time where we really need a positive angle. Just to give our listeners some background, I first met you when you came on board as the CEO of Pearson Education’s School Group, when I was working for Pearson Digital Learning, (for the K-12 School Market) in the Chandler, Arizona offices. This was back in 2008, and I can still remember your introductory speech to our group, like it was yesterday. We were all packed into a tiny room, full of sales reps, and our managers, all with the hopes of making an impact on student learning in the classroom. I remember as you stool at the front, that your passion for education and making a difference with student learning was evident back then.Q1: Can you give us a snapshot of your background, and why you have always been so passionate about education, specifically with the power of technology, making education accessible and engaging for everyone?Q2: Fast forward 12 years, from that day we first met at Pearson, I don’t think any of us in that room would have predicted the surge and importance of online learning, as we see it today. I say this with some disappointment with the group that you spoke to back then, Pearson’s Digital Division, that no longer exists. From your point of view, what is the state of education as you see it today with the power of bringing online learning to the forefront in our K-12 schools as well as your vision for higher ed campuses?Q3: I saw an article you shared on social media that highlighted a positive point of view of the power of connection that higher ed plays an important role with[ii]. I thoroughly enjoyed my University years, and then had the opportunity to work with Higher Ed campuses in the southwest here, with Pearson’s Longman division before I was with the Digital Team, and I know you have a birds-eye view of what’s happening in Higher Education across the country. I wonder what you are seeing with the first few weeks back to school on many campuses. Can you share what you think can help students to stay connected so they don’t feel so isolated these days?Q4: Peter, the whole reason I launched this podcast a year ago, was to bring awareness to the fact that “Success in life, and in college and career specifically, relies on student’s cognitive, social, and emotional development.” I wanted to not only focus on the importance of these skills in our K-12 schools, but with the fact that students must continue this learning after high school, into college and then take these skills into their career. What skills do you think are important for students to learn immediately that they can take into the workplace, to guarantee future success?Q5: I didn’t mention that I did work at University of Phoenix prior to Pearson, in the International Division, and my husband got his MBA from U of P so we are a U of P family. I remember that back then, the biggest hurdle students had to overcome with their decision to study online was whether an online degree held the same weight as an in-person degree. I saw how quickly students could transfer credits they had already earned from other institutions and put them towards their degree to save time and money. What initiatives has U of P been focused on, knowing that many students may consider traditional online learning to earn their degree?Q6: Is there anything that is important, that you think we have missed?Thank you so much for your time today, Peter. It’s been wonderful to see you again and connect in person. It really is a testament that none of us know who we are impacting in the room, when we are standing at the front, as a leader, paving the path. Thanks for all you do for your employees and for the future of eduction. If anyone is considering an online degree at U o P[iii], is the best way to go to www.phoenix.edu and search for their degree of interest for traditional campuses across the US and online courses available for students around the world? I did also see you have COVID-19 response initiatives that I’ve posted in the show notes, for students and staff at U of P, in addition to your Twitter, YouTube and Facebook pages. Thanks so much Peter.RESOURCES:Peter Cohen’s Response to COVID-19 YouTube Uploaded March 27,2020 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ItfSFgxGTYUniversity of Phoenix’s COVID-19 Response Initiatives https://www.phoenix.edu/news/covid19.htmlUniversity of Phoenix YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDF_b2O1L_z9YG8_PnCv0ygUniversity of Phoenix Twitterhttps://twitter.com/uopxUniversity of Phoenix Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/universityofphoenixAwarding up to $1 million in scholarships https://www.phoenix.edu/Social and Racial Inequities Webinar: October 1-8th University of Phoenix is co-hosting a webinar series with the National Diversity Council called “Conversations in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” https://news.phoenix.edu/ REGISTER.REFERENCES:[i] University of Phoenix hires new President (April 26, 2017) https://www.insidehighered.com/quicktakes/2017/04/26/university-phoenix-hires-new-president[ii] Believing in our Students by Austin Sarat (Posted Sept. 3, 2020) https://www.insidehighered.com/views/2020/09/03/some-positive-reflections-students-return-campuses-opinion[iii] www.phoenix.edu

In this podcast the Trigger Sisters discuss how they turned a wacky idea into a business during a family trip to Marillee's house. This is an uplifting story and encouragement for others wanting to try a home business Visit the Trigger Sisters' website to see more of their fun, out-of-the-box, products! The Trigger Sisters Discuss: Marillee discusses how a short conversation about the correct way to tackle the times tables turned into Jennie sharing her wacky story method she came up with to teach her boys their facts. They discussed how they developed the program in complete chaos surrounded by eight children and all the noise that comes with them. Marillee talks about how her husband was almost in tears laughing at how silly we sounded coming up with the Times Tales stories. He said, our business might make enough to each buy a coffee mocha. They discuss how the very first copies of Times Tales were pen drawings they copied at the local copy shop with a $60.00 initial investment in the business. Jennie discusses how word of mouth by moms on message boards were their grass roots advertisers and they would not have a business today if it wasn't for those moms. How Jennie was shocked to see the very first sales the first day Times Tales was listed on Ebay Jennie discusses how they were surprised to discover that their program was highly successful for children with learning disabilities. The sisters discuss how over the past 17 years they developed and refined their Times Tales program and learned along the way about operating a thriving educational publishing company. How their company has grown to a niche of providing unconventional, visually-enriched learning products for children.
In this episode, Melissa talks with Dave Burgess, the author of Teach Like a Pirate and successful publisher of over 100 books about educational practice. Dave talks about how he went from teacher, to speaker, to author, to publisher and inspires us to share our own "art" as teachers.
Do you spend a lot of time and money recruiting people to your team? Most businesses do. Without people, the right people, there is no business. So, naturally, companies spend money and time – often a lot of money and time – on advertising and outreach to find talented individuals In these cases, businesses sometimes think that they have a recruiting problem (i.e., “If only we did x,y and z, we could find the right person!”), but more often than not, it's actually a mission statement problem. Why? Because a clear, strong, and powerful mission statement will attract the right people to your door over and over again. No need to spend tons of time and money hunting for talent… talent will come to you. And even if you don't have a spot for a talented person on your team right in that moment, they become part of your bench of talent. So when you are ready to make that next hire, you know exactly who you're reaching out to. On this week’s episode, I talk with Caitlin Frauton, our Director of Marketing at Adam Hergenrother Companies. Her path to our company is an example of the power of a clear company mission. It was the mission statement that attracted Caitlin to our organization, and she sheds light on why it was so powerful for her from both from the perspective of an employee and a marketing expert. We go well beyond the words of the mission statement and talk about what it actually means to live and breathe a mission statement. When you do that, you get the right people in the door… every single time. If you need more talent in your world who are passionate about what your organization does, this is an episode you need to hear. Although she liked what she was doing, both jobs didn’t feel like they were in alignment with her long-term goals. She began the journey of manifesting a workplace that put their values in action and also supported consciousness and spirituality. [5:10] The more a team feels like they are serving something beyond themselves, the more likely they are to let the negative gossip and destructive water cooler talk go. [7:06] While Caitlin was in the interview process with us, she liked that there was less focus on small talk and more on the important things such as personal growth and self-education. She saw our team making things happen and talking the talk rather than just walking the walk. [9:12] A few things Caitlyn appreciates most about working on the team include constant communication and weekly check-ins, equality, and respect for other people’s time and goals. Getting together at people’s homes or having out of work BBQ’s are great and an extra bonus, but what really matters is people doing self-work on their off time,

How does one go from cleaning chicken droppings in Iowa to being a videographer in Iran to heading one of America's iconic technology companies? That question only addresses half of Frank Ferguson's adventurous career; he would eventually co-found and build a remarkably successful business in one of the toughest markets, educational publishing. I spent a bit over an hour in conversation with this idealistic yet intensely practical doer; I could have used another two hours! In Episode 7 of the Angel Invest Boston Podcast we explored the ideas and traits that made Frank Ferguson a success on so many fronts. Emma Hopkin fell in love with books as a young child, a love affair which has shown no signs of abating in the intervening years. Currently the Managing Director of Bloomsbury Children's and Educational Publishing at Bloomsbury Publishing, she has channeled this enduring love of literature into a successful career that has seen her occupy a number of management roles at various international publishing houses, specifically overseeing children's literature. She was in Australia recently from the UK to meet with the Bloomsbury team here, and promote the launch of their new digital imprint Spark, and so we took the opportunity to sit down with her to ask her when she first realised how powerful books could be, what led her into the publishing industry in the first place, and where she sees the rapidly changing business of selling books going. www.WritersCentre.com.au
