Learning how to engage students is one of the biggest challenges for educators today. There is so much noise to cut through just to be heard much less teach tomorrow’s generation. Dave Burgess has made a career out of finding exciting ways to engage even the toughest audience out there and he’s here to let you know that YOU Can Teach Like a Pirate too! Dave shares how he stumbled into teaching after taking a coaching job out of college. It was during his years of coaching that he realized he loved finding ways to inspire the toughest kids in his classroom. He brought together his experience as a magician and an MC and found creative ways to bring life and fun into his classroom. After putting together a presentation to help other teachers in his district better engage their students, Teach Like a PIRATE was born. He has now partnered with several other experts in various areas of teaching to expand on the original PIRATE system.  You don’t have to be a Dave or a Kasey to meaningfully engage your students. Every single teacher has strengths and experiences that can help them to motivate their classrooms in becoming the best students they can be. One of the most often heard comments both Dave and Kasey hear from the teachers they coach is, “but I’m not like you…” Learn why you don’t have to be anybody but your unique self to create the best classroom environment for your students. Dave is a true character and his passion for teaching is evident in everything that he does. You won't want to miss what’s coming up next for Dave Burgess Consulting Inc! Hint - something is coming out this year! There’s also another book coming out in the near future AND Dave shares some insights into what you’ll experience at PIRATECon in 2020. If you want to make a big impact on those around you, to truly make positive change in your school, workplace, and community, check out this game-changing episode with the one and only, Dr. Jody Carrington! In this episode, we talk about trauma, ways to connect with the kids in our lives, and some of the ways we can take care of ourselves along the way. Jody is a passionate believer in the power of the relationship with the people we love, lead, and teach. Her favorite thing on the planet to do is to speak with educators – they have the power to change the trajectory of a life every single day. It is time, she believes, that we need to start focusing less on Kids These Days, and more on those of you who hold them. The core of everything she speaks and writes about comes down to this: We are wired to do hard things. We can do those hard things so much easier when we remember this: We are wired for connection. Jody Carrington is a clinical psychologist, mom, wife, author, minor hockey coach, and game changer. She grew up in rural Alberta and was inspired by a teacher, way back when, to pursue a career in psychology. She received her undergraduate degree (with distinction) from the University of Alberta, and her Masters Degree and PhD from the University of Regina, in Saskatchewan, Canada. After completing her residency in Nova Scotia, Canada, she spent ten years working at the Alberta Children’ Hospital on the Mental Health In- and Day Treatment Units in Calgary. After having an (impressive) three babies in two years, she and her (lucky) husband Aaron moved to rural Alberta, where they currently live. There she runs a small private practice, is growing her business of changing the world, and raising her sweet babes. He came to the school first as a basketball coach and a teaching job soon ensued. He is currently on a one-year leave to promote his book, Teach Like a PIRATE: Increase Student Engagement, Boost Your Creativity, and Transform Your Life as an Educator.  Who has helped you in your journey to become a master teacher?   – Dave worked for three summers at the John Wooden basketball camp. To learn from such an extraordinary coach and man of character has benefitted him. Wooden's idea of success, the piece of mind arising from doing your best, has influences Dave's teaching. He tries to embed LCLs (life-changing lessons) into everything that he does in the classroom.   It is important for other teachers to know that we all have had setbacks in the classroom. Identify an instance in which you struggled as a teacher and explain what you learned from that experience. – Dave created a whole lesson around the War of the Worlds. He had the classroom in complete darkness and wanted students to listen to the radio broadcast. There were behavior problems and the students were disengaged. He was very discouraged. Through reflection he realized that the broadcast is flat-out boring. Good teaching is like a heat-seeking missile.  Any time it is off course is has the intuition to return to its proper direction. Through reflection we can get ourselves back on course.   What role does literacy play in a U.S. History class? – Dave believes there should be an emphasis on primary sources. Also, writing forces students to get clear about their thinking. Both enables students to become more critical as thinkers. What is one thing that you love about the classroom?  – Dave loves the day-to-day interactions and relationships with students. It is something that is missing right now while he is on this year-long book/workshop tour.  Segment II — Digging into the Teacher Bag of Goodies    What book do you recommend to a developing teacher?  -- Teach Like a PIRATE: Increase Student Engagement, Boost Your Creativity, and Transform Your Life as an Educator is about embracing the spirit of a pirate -- to be a maverick and sail into unchartered waters without guarantee of success. They also embrace diversity. Their crews reflect a broad range of abilities and backgrounds. There is also the whole idea of trying to hook students and draw them into content. One of the key lessons of the book is encouraging teachers to find what is unique about themselves and draw on those talents and energies and bring them into the classroom.
