In the first months of 1939, before the world changed, Elzbieta Zawacka had an MA degree in Mathematics, and was an enthusiastic instructor in Poland's “Women's Military Training” organization, established to prepare women for service in a future war. When that war came, Elzbieta believed from the start that she was a soldier as much as any man. Under Nazi occupation she established espionage networks, and then served as a courier for the Polish Home Army. Sent to England, she there trained as a member of the Polish Special Operations Group known as the “Silent Unseen”; when she returned to Poland she did so as the only woman to arrive during the war by parachute. Elzbieta fought in the Warsaw uprising, and survived its collapse. Following the Soviet takeover of Poland, she became a teacher. But in 1951 she was arrested and tortured by the Security Service, and spent four years in prison before her sentence was commuted. As a consequence her heroism and achievements were erased from national memory, until the fall of the Communist regime.  With me to discuss the life and achievements of this amazing woman is Clare Mulley, whose books have recovered the stories and experience of women who served during the First and Second World Wars. They have included a biography of the founder of Save the Children; the story of a Polish-born British special agent; and the stories of Nazi Germany's only two female test pilots. Oder, wie Elzbieta Rogowska von der Mikrofermenterei Bärbucha sagt: als Wellness-Getränk. Und genau das stellt sie zusammen mit ihrem Partner Tadeausz Zagrabinski in kulinarischer Perfektion her - kompromißlos nach traditioneller Methode. Für mich ist Bärbucha wie eine Ur-Zelle des Kombuchas in Deutschland – fast 20 Sorten kann man in ihrem Café in Berlin Schöneberg in Champagner-Gläsern genießen – nirgends hat mir Kombucha bisher so gut geschmeckt. “And it's been noted how many people are very lonely and how many people are missing people, and this is what we do on a daily basis, we introduce people together.”   Andrew Ford is the landlord of my local pub, the Hand in Hand, on Wimbledon Common, South West London. It's my sanctuary when London becomes too much for me, as stepping through its doors you enter a cosy country-style pub dating back to 1835. But more importantly, you're greeted with a smile and a decent pint of beer.   On one level I have mixed feelings broadcasting about the pub, as I feel it's one of London's best-kept secrets – after all, there aren't too many “village” pubs in London! However, the Hand in Hand and Andrew are full of stories; and stories should be shared.   So last month, I caught up with Andrew for a pint of ale, and we had a fine chat and a laugh. Bärbucha Kombucha wird in in Berlin Schöneberg hergestellt. Gebraut wird genauso wie er vor zweitausend Jahren gebraut wurde, in Berlins erster Firma, die Kombucha braut und fermentierte Lebensmittel herstellt. Der Kombucha von Elzbieta und Tadeusz ist unpasteurisiert, nicht filtriert, nicht künstlich karbonisiert und aus erlesenen Teesorten. Wir waren vor Ort und haben mit den beiden gesprochen. Auch darüber, was Kombucha und fermentierte Lebensmittel für unsere Gesundheit tun können.

Möt en av den europeiska elektroakustiska musikens stora damer Elzbieta Sikora i Warszawa och Paris. Hon är utbildad ljudtekniker, klassisk tonsättare och elaktroakustisk kompositör. Hon är polska och bor i Paris. Hennes namn är Elzbieta Sikora och hon är en av de stora inom den elektroakustiska musiken. Jag träffade Elzbieta Sikora i forna hemlandet Polen, i Warzsawa i samband med en porträttkonsert som anordnades för denna 61-åriga tonsättare, som 1997 fick Polens Kavallerikors och 2004 den franska orden Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres. Hon har en gedigen musikalisk utbildning. Hon föddes i Lwow i Polen. Efter pianostudier i Gdansk tog hon examen vid musikakademin i Warzsawa. I den ingick även studier i ljudteknik. Senare återvände Elzbieta Sikora till Warzsawa och tog sin andra examen, denna gång i komposition. Elzbieta Sikora studerade också komposition hos Betsy Jolas i Paris. Nu är Sikorá professor i elektoakustisk musik vid Musikkonservatoriet i Angouleme i Frankrike. Från början ville Elzbieta Sikora bli konsertpianist, men hade inte nerver för en solokarriär. Till 150-årsminnet av polske tonsättaren och pianisten Fredrick Chopins död 1849, fick Elzbieta Sikora uppdraget av Chopin-sällskapet i Paris att komponera en pianokonsert: Hommage a Frédéric Chopin.  Det var studentupproret i Europa 1968 som inspirerade Elzbieta Sikora till att bli musikalisk avantgardist. 1968-70 studerade hon elektroakustisk musik hos bl a Pierre Schaeffer vid franska radions elektronmusikstudio GRM i Paris. Elzbieta Sikoras verklista innehåller en mängd kompositioner, både akustiska och elektroakustiska; operor, balettmusik, orkesterverk, bl a en symfoni, kammarmusik, bl a fyra stråkkvartetter och en stråksextett, körmusik, bl a ett oratorium och sånger. Även filmmusik, förstås. Ett tjugotal bandstycken och flera hörspel har det också blivit. De elektroakustiska styckena är färgade av hennes klassiska kunskap: form, harmonik, gestik. På så sätt blir Elzbieta Sikoras musik varken mekanisk eller statisk. Stycket Grain de Sable, Sandkorn, är baserat på de inspelningar som en truckförare gjorde för henne. Först i Paris blev jag medveten om kvinnors villkor, säger Elzbieta. Tonsättare sitter inte i lockliga peruker i guldram på väggen, säger Paula. Du spelar ju bra, som en man, får Pernille höra. I det sjätte och sista programmet möter vi Elzbieta Sikora, ljudtekniker, klassisk tonsättare och elektroakustisk kompositör. Hon är uppvuxen i Warszawa och bor i Paris. -I min kompositionsklass var vi 3 - 4 flickor och 5 pojkar. Men jag är den enda som blev tonsättare. -Det var först när jag kom till Frankrike som jag blev medveten om kvinnors och mäns olika villkor, berättar Elzbieta Sikora, som har erhållit Polens Kavallerikors och den franska orden Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres. De som tror att tonsättare sitter i lockliga peruker i guldram på väggen - de tror fel. Jag får ta emot gliringar och ”goda” råd som manliga tonsättare slipper. Paula af Malmborg Ward har skrivit operor, radiohörspel, orkesterverk. Paula har även skrivit musik till Tittarnas Önskekonsert och Julkalendern och spelat piano i husbandet Stella i SVT:s ”På Spåret”. 1984 var hon med i melodifestivalen med låten Rendez-vous. Vi möter danska jazzkompositören och saxofonisten, arrangören och bandledaren Pernille Bévort, som fått Ben Websterpriset och de danska musikkritikernas JASA-pris. -Kvinnliga jazzinstrumentalister i Danmark har på tio år försvunnit från musikutbildningarna. Elzbieta est née en Pologne en 1936. La petite fille est âgée de cinq ans quand, fuyant la guerre, la famille décide de quitter la Pologne pour se réfugier en Alsace ; après Mulhouse, elle rejoint Londres puis Paris, dans un parcours semé d'épreuves. Elzbieta se forme à diverses disciplines artistiques et c'est en artiste plasticienne qui accorde une grande importance au texte qu'elle aborde le livre pour enfant. Dans ses albums, traduits dans de nombreuses langues, les personnages aident à se préparer à affronter le monde.
