You know I believe that a calibrated morning routine is one of the most important habits for an exceptionally great life. The way you begin your day very much sets up how your day unfolds. Of course… …starting with MVP [Meditation, Visualization, Prayer] is powerful. …doing a sweaty workout while hydrating and listening to a fascinating audiobook is magic. …speaking some mantras and reciting some affirmations is enriching. Yet, without some time reflecting and recording in your journal, I don't believe a morning routine is fully loaded, if you get my drift. If you're serious about becoming a virtuoso, balance periods of being in the world with periods in the wilderness of isolation, contemplation, reflection and renewal. This is what my latest book The Wealth Money Can't Buy is all about. SHOW NOTES: In Podcast Episode 265, “When You Make Yourself an Enemy of God, Your Enemy Meter Is No Longer Rightly Calibrated,“ Kim discusses the mistaken spiritual vision that occurs when one makes himself an enemy of God. As we see with King Solomon, because of his wrong choices, the Lord had raised up men to stand against him. Yet, those were not his real enemies. His real enemy was himself. We all have had times when we were our own worst enemies but continued to fight against perceived enemies until the Lord spiritually shook us to re-calibrate our perspective. Our focal passages for this episode are 1 Kings 11:26-43 with verse 40 as the focal verse: 40 Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, but he fled to King Shishak of Egypt and stayed there until Solomon died. Today I'm joined by Peter Boghossian to discuss the art of facilitating constructive dialogue in a polarized world. Peter explains Street Epistemology as a way to have civil conversations and help people calibrate their beliefs to the evidence and reasons they hold. He shares his experiences teaching in prisons and how it shaped his understanding of applied epistemology. Our conversation delves into the Socratic method, which is the foundation of street epistemology. Peter describes the five stages of the Socratic method and how it can be used to ask questions and test hypotheses. He emphasizes the importance of calibrated questions and the role of evidence in belief formation.Peter also discusses the challenges of having conversations about emotionally laden topics and dealing with ideological entrenchment. We discuss the concept of preference falsification and how it can hinder productive dialogue. The importance of perspective taking and asking open-ended questions is highlighted as a way to facilitate understanding and challenge deeply held beliefs. We also touch on the application of hostage negotiation techniques in difficult conversations, including those between parents and their children with ROGD (rapid onset gender dysphoria). Peter emphasizes the need for a consistent and principled stance, while also recognizing the importance of setting boundaries and removing toxic individuals from one's life. He shares his motivation for engaging in these conversations, which is rooted in the pursuit of truth and a genuine curiosity about why people believe what they do.Peter Boghossian is a Founding Faculty member at the University of Austin and the Executive Director of National Progress Alliance. Peter has a teaching pedigree spanning more than 25 years that focuses on the Socratic method, scientific skepticism, and critical thinking. Peter's dissertation explored increasing the moral reasoning of prison inmates and aiding their resistance to crime. His most recent book is How to Have Impossible Conversations, and his writing can be found in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Scientific American, Time Magazine, National Review, and elsewhere. His work is centered on bringing the tools of professional philosophers to a wide variety of contexts to help people think through what seem to be intractable problems.Find Peter online https://linktr.ee/peterboghossianBooks mentioned in this episode: Feminism Against Progress by Mary Harrington How to Have Impossible Conversations by Peter Boghossian and James Lindsay The Gift of Violence by Matt Thornton, Peter Boghossian, et al Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss All books mentioned on this podcast can be found at sometherapist.com/bookshop or by following the embedded Amazon affiliate links. Curiosity Is Your Key To Effective Cold Calling On this episode of the Sales Gravy podcast, Ulysses Price, filling in for Jeb Blount, interviews Chris Beall, CEO of ConnectAndSell. ConnectAndSell is a software service that helps salespeople initiate conversations with prospects. Beall explains how market dominance and the humble cold call are connected. His prospecting philosophy requires the salesperson to build trust and demonstrate curiosity, master the first few seconds of the conversation to create emotional buy-in, and avoid triggering psychological reactance. By breaking down the conversation and practicing each part in training, sales reps can improve their skills and conduct more successful sales conversations. Chris Beall connected the dots between market dominance and the potential impact of a humble cold call. Calibrated callers are comfortable using a psychological framework, playful curiosity, and confidence to create a clean read from potential customers and insist on a meeting. The seven-second rule is a technique for building trust in a cold call by demonstrating tactical empathy and competence to solve the problem of the caller being an interruption. The risk of B2B sales is a career risk, not a financial risk. B2B salespeople are necessary because buyers risk their careers when making buying decisions. Salespeople must gain the trust of potential customers to become the expert and be on their side. Sales reps must be able to make a clean read of a potential customer, understand their needs and interests, and provide value. Handle objections in a delicate and curious manner, stick to your guns, and position yourself as an expert to establish trust quickly. Gain Your Prospect's Trust In Seven Seconds Cold calling is still one of the most effective ways of reaching potential customers, but it can be a daunting task for many salespeople, especially when you don't know where to start. To start a conversation, we need to gain someone's trust. Without trust, they won't listen to us, and we won't get far. When we make a cold call, the person we're speaking with only wants to end the conversation while keeping their self-image intact. If they didn't care about their self-image, they would just hang up. So we have a small window of opportunity to gain their trust— just seven seconds. In those seven seconds is to help the other party see that we see the world through their eyes. We call it tactical empathy. Secondly, we need to demonstrate to them that we're competent in solving a problem they have right now. Their problem could be me, but I can always offer to go away in exchange for something. You want them to listen to you, so you make that offer. For example, you might open the call with a statement like: "I know I'm an interruption. Can I take 27 seconds to tell you why I called?" By saying this, you're self-indicting right at the beginning. That's what the other party is already thinking about you. You beat them to the punch. As a seller, it's essential to establish trust with your audience, especially in B2B sales. Eventually, they have to trust you more than they trust themselves and view you as the expert. This is why the first seven seconds are crucial in establishing trust with your audience. Do it wisely, and they will trust you forever, but try selling to them, and you'll lose their trust in an instant. Then comes the pitch: "We've made a breakthrough that eliminates the waste and frustration that hinder your best sales reps from being effective on the phone. My call today is to request 15 minutes of your time to share this with you. Do you have your calendar handy?" Sounds easy, right? But it's not. The waste is economic, and the frustration is emotional. That's because frustration triggers the part of our brain that causes us to lash out. Be careful not to trigger anger and instead, use a tone of voice that shows you understand what frustration mean...
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Correctly Calibrated Trust, published by habryka on June 24, 2023 on LessWrong. Chana from the CEA Community Health team posted this to the EA Forum, where it sadly seems to have not gotten a lot of traction. I actually think it's a quite important post, so I am signal-boosting it here. On the surface level it talks a lot about EA, but I a lot of it also straightforwardly implies to the AI Alignment or Rationality communities, and as such are also of relevance to a lots of readers on LessWrong. Below I shamelessly copied over the whole post content (except the footnotes, since they were hard to copy-paste): This post comes from finding out that Asya Bergal was having thoughts about this and was maybe going to write a post, thoughts I was having along similar lines, and a decision to combine energy and use the strategy fortnight as an excuse to get something out the door. A lot of this is written out of notes I took from a call with her, so she get credit for a lot of the concrete examples and the impetus for writing a post shaped like this. Interested in whether this resonates with people's experience! Short version: [Just read the bold to get a really short version] There's a lot of “social sense of trust” in EA, in my experience. There's a feeling that people, organizations and projects are broadly good and reasonable (often true!) that's based on a combination of general vibes, EA branding and a few other specific signals of approval, as well as an absence of negative signals. I think that it's likely common to overweight those signals of approval and the absence of disapproval. Especially post-FTX, I'd like us to be well calibrated on what the vague intuition we download from the social web is telling us, and place trust wisely. [“Trust” here is a fuzzy and under-defined thing that I'm not going to nail down - I mean here something like a general sense that things are fine and going well] Things like getting funding, being highly upvoted on the forum, being on podcasts, being high status and being EA-branded are fuzzy and often poor proxies for trustworthiness and of relevant people's views on the people, projects and organizations in question[1]. Negative opinions (anywhere from “that person not so great” to “that organization potentially quite sketch, but I don't have any details”) are not necessarily that likely to find their way to any given person for a bunch of reasons, and we don't have great solutions to collecting and acting on character evidence that doesn't come along with specific bad actions. It's easy to overestimate what you would know if there's a bad thing to know. If it's decision relevant or otherwise important to know how much to trust a person or organization, I think it's a mistake to rely heavily on the above indicators, or on the “general feeling” in EA. Instead, get data if you can, and ask relevant people their actual thoughts - you might find them surprisingly out of step with what the vibe would indicate. I'm pretty unsure what we can or should do as a community about this, but I have a few thoughts at the bottom, and having a post about it as something to point to might help. Longer version: I think you'll get plenty out of this if you read the headings and read more under each heading if something piques your curiosity Part 1: What fuzzy proxies are people using and why would they be systematically overweighted? (I don't know how common these mistakes are, or that they apply to you, the specific reader of the post. I expect them to bite harder if you're newer or less connected, but I also expect that it's easy to be somewhat biased in the same directions even if you have a lot of context. It obviously is Bayesian evidence, but I expect this to be extremely noisy. These organisations engage in hits-based philanthropy - as I understand it, they don't expect most of the grants they make to be especially valuable (but the amount and way this is true varies by funder - Linch describes...

In 2009, Tim Chen found himself laid off from his Wall Street job and was trying to figure out his next move. But a simple question from his sister about finding the right credit card turned into the core idea for NerdWallet, the company on a mission to give consumers clarity around all of life's financial decisions. NerdWallet started as a tool to help people shop for credit cards, but has scaled to serve over 19 million users. In 2021, Tim led NerdWallet through an IPO. Tim shares why they raised venture capital only after the company was profitable, why he loves the Jeff Bezos quote that very few decisions are irreversible, and how his parents instilled Tim's entrepreneurial drive.

This week I have the honor of interviewing Branden Leeb and Mike Carnahan of Elite Tuned and Elite Tuning School to explain the process of remotely - and iteratively - tuning fuel injected engines. Their specialty is GM Gen III, IV, and V engines and they recently they have added in both MOPAR and Ford tuning capability as well. Recently I had Elite tune my Chevelle when Zip Simons at Street Metal Concepts told me he used their services often. Man...was he ever right! In my case, they gave better results than I had received from two different shops that ran the car on a dyno. I was amazed at the compete difference in drivability and power delivery after the process was complete and I had to get an interview to find out the secret sauce that made such a difference. The post TMCP #511: Calibrated GM, MOPAR, and Ford Engine Tuning Via E-Mail! Branden Leeb and Mike Carnahan, Elite Tuned and Elite Tuning School first appeared on The Muscle Car Place.
