Britain has wrapped up Sunday's security summit to address the war in Ukraine. AP correspondent Donna Warder reports.
Three years ago tomorrow, before dawn broke, Russia began its full scale invasion of its sovereign neighbour, Ukraine. On Tuesday, US and Russian officials held their first high-level, face-to-face talks since the war started but Ukraine was not invited, prompting fears in Kyiv that the country invaded by Russia was being sidelined. At the same time as the meeting in the Saudi Arabian capital, the US administration was letting the EU know that it could no longer rely on the US to help defend it. Has the past week been the bleakest in Europe since the fall of the Iron Curtain? Dr Alexander Titov (lecturer in Modern European History at Queen's University, Belfast), Cal Thomas (commentator and former Fox News pundit) and Catherine Clinton (Denman Professor of American History at the University of Texas) joined Audrey Carville to discuss this dramatic and rapid change in the world order, and ask if there's any period in history that can guide us to help build peace at this time.

Russian and U.S. officials met in person for the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine more than 1,000 days ago. They aimed to chart a path towards peace and raised the possibility of lifting sanctions they’ve aimed at each other. They also agreed to work toward restoring staffing at embassies. But there was one glaring omission: Ukrainian officials were not in the room. Geoff Bennett reports. PBS News is supported by - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/about/funders

President Trump spoke to the leaders of both Russia and Ukraine on Wednesday and announced that talks to end the war would start immediately. Earlier in the day, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth outlined major U.S. shifts on Ukraine, saying Kyiv should not expect to recapture all territory occupied by Russia and that its bid for NATO membership is unrealistic at this time. For review:1. IDF Withdraws from Netzarim Corridor After 5th Hostage Release Cycle. According to the ceasefire deal, Israeli forces had to withdraw after the fifth swap was carried out.2. US President Donald Trump comments on the poor state of appearance of the three Israeli Hostages released on Saturday. President Trump: “They are in really bad shape, they have been treated brutally, horribly. Even the ones that came out earlier, they were in a little bit better shape, but mentally they were treated so badly. Who could take that? “You know, at some point, we're gonna lose our patience.”3. IDF continues strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. Israeli fighter jets carried out several airstrikes in Lebanon on Sunday evening, including against a tunnel between Lebanon and Syria used by Hezbollah to smuggle arms. Additionally, the Israeli Air Force targeted several Hezbollah sites in other areas of Lebanon, which included weapons and rocket launchers that “posed an immediate threat” to Israel.4. President Trump Reveals Conversations With Russian President Putin About Ending War in Ukraine. “I'd better not say,” said Trump when asked how many times the two leaders have spoken.5. European Union Defense Spending in 2024 Expected be 326 Billion Euros.6. US Secretary of Defense Hegseth pledges to prioritize cutting waster in the Department of Defense. Secretary Hegseth said that in addition to rooting out waste, fraud and abuse, the Pentagon needs to slash hierarchies and layers of bureaucracy that aren't serving the military. That could also involve a reduction in the number of four-star generals and flag officers, he said. “We won World War II with seven four-star generals. Today we have 44. Do all of those directly contribute to warfighting success? Maybe they do. I don't know, but it's worth reviewing to make sure they do.”

The revelations of people like Edward Snowden, Julian Assange and John Kiriakou have allowed the world to know about the sly and insidious turn Western governments took following 9/11. From torture programs to mass surveillance to extrajudicial captures and killings, it has become clear how far these governments have poured away their own values and beliefs.

Alex Lawson is the Executive Director of Social Security Works and the convening member of the Strengthen Social Security Coalition. He has spent his career working to try to save Social Security from Republican (and sometimes Democratic) attempts to "reform" (i.e., cut) it. Today, Alex joins to discuss:Why Social Security is a huge social democratic achievement and the fight it took to get it in the first placeWhy the right has always hated Social Security (it shows government can work and successfully help people) and the history of their attempts to undermine itThe lies and propaganda that are used to convince people that Social Security is in a crisis and urgently needs reforms that will cut people's benefitsHow the strong popularity of Social Security means politicians all pretend they support it even when they don't, and why we need to be vigilant against politicians who pretend they care about maintaining it and then try to sneak through measures to cut benefitsWhy we need to go on the offensive, not just defending Social Security as it exists but demanding an expansion of benefitsAlex's testimony to the Senate budget committee from last year can be found here. Useful commentaries on Social Security by Matt Bruenig can be found here and here. Here is his explanation of the point Alex made about how raising the retirement age cuts benefits (the chart is very helpful in making the point clearer). The book Social Security Works For Everyone! is a useful primer on the issues. The philosophical bent of Social Security is an ever-expanding system of economic security delivered to more and more and more people. When FDR signed it into law, he said 'With this law, I lay the cornerstone that future generations can build upon.' And that's what we have to recognize. — Alex Lawson

It's been eighteen months since Russia invaded Ukraine. In that time, Russia has annexed four Ukrainian territories; the mercenary Wagner Group staged a coup against Putin, and then its leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, died in a mysterious plane explosion; Ukraine mounted a successful counter-offensive, and then a less successful one, which is currently ongoing. All the while, the U.S. has engaged in what seems like a proxy war with Russia, imposing extensive sanctions and providing thirty billion dollars in weapons, training, and intelligence to Ukraine. Some foreign-policy experts are questioning this strategy. Keith Gessen, a contributing writer at The New Yorker, has been covering the war in Ukraine since its beginning. This week, he published a piece titled “The Case for Negotiating with Russia,” about the analysts who are pushing for diplomacy over warfare. He joins Tyler Foggatt to discuss the state of the conflict, and why it's the U.S. that could ultimately decide how it ends.

Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in as a justice of the Supreme Court more than four years ago, on Oct. 6, 2018. His oath followed perhaps the ugliest Supreme Court Senate confirmation process in history — and that, given the previous examples of Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas, is saying something. But when it was all over, Kavanaugh settled in to the court, where he has, by all accounts, performed admirably ever since.
