In this episode, host Reese Tisdale is joined by Bluefield Research's Senior Analyst, Ethan Edwards, for a deep dive into the recent US$2 billion acquisition of USALCO by private equity firm TJC—the biggest deal in the water sector this year so far. USALCO, a key player in the water and wastewater treatment chemicals market, was acquired from H.I.G. Capital, which retained a minority stake. Reese and Ethan explore the strategic importance of this deal and what it signals for the water sector moving forward. Questions addressed in this conversation: What are the basics of TJC's acquisition of USALCO and its significance in the broader water treatment chemicals market? How has USALCO's acquisitive strategy transformed the company's footprint in the U.S., particularly in the water and wastewater treatment sectors? What role has private equity played in consolidating the water treatment chemicals market, and why is this consolidation happening at such a rapid pace? How are water treatment chemical producers managing high cost pressures, and what are the broader implications for the industry's profitability? Looking ahead, Bluefield's water experts discuss what's on the horizon for the water treatment chemicals market, including the potential for more M&A activity, IPOs like Solenis' planned for 2025, and the impact of persistently high interest rates on deal flow. Ranked at 15, John Ford's The Searchers (1956) has been generally touted as the best American western. German journalist Andreas Kilb called The Searchers, "The essence of American Myth in one film," and Paul (but maybe not Corey) agrees - with the caveat that that's not exactly a good thing. Ford had already made 100 films by this point in his career and worked with star John Wayne in a great number of them. The Searchers marked a maturation of the genre for Ford in which he wanted to tackle the topic of racism through an anti-hero for the ages, Ethan Edwards. Even within the film and in the context of the time of its relief, there's a feeling of deep ambivalence in how to feel about Ethan Edwards. And in 2024, the feeling has only grown more complicated (or perhaps clearer than ever). It all leads to an excellent discussion of America, settler colonialism, and racism as the ideology that allowed/s for the creation of them both.

The eight Japanese trading companies, also known as “sogo shosha”, are Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsui Corporation, Hitachi Corporation, Itochu Corporation, Sumitomo Corporation, Marubeni Corporation, Toyota Tsusho, and Sojitz Corporation. Together these firms reported nearly US$600 billion in assets under management in 2023. These companies are global, with positions in key markets geographically, and are a unique group with a number of investments in water. Bluefield President and Podcast Host Reese Tisdale and Bluefield's Senior Analyst Ethan Edwards discuss three major questions surrounding the role of these companies within water: How are Japanese trading houses strategically positioned in the global water market, and what factors contribute to their investments in water-related assets? What role do Japanese trading houses play in driving technological advancements and innovations in water management? What are the notable collaborations between Japanese trading houses and local or international entities in the water sector? "These are massive firms, almost battleships of organizations. They've been at it for so long that they've accumulated a wide network that spans globally. Together, they wield a significant influence across a wide network of industries." --Ethan Edwards, Senior Analyst, Bluefield Research If you enjoy listening to The Future of Water Podcast, please tell a friend or colleague, and if you haven't already, please click to follow this podcast wherever you listen. We're in our last week for our month's theme of ASSHOLES ON FILM and we had to hit up a flick with our Asshole Theme Mascot, John Wayne. Why not hit up one of the most beloved John Ford/John Wayne westerns ever. Yep, we're talking about the 1956 classic “The Searchers” starring John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles and a young Natalie Wood. The character of Ethan Edwards is quite the racist so you know John Wayne didn't have to “act” too hard. His racism doesn't ebb when a particular Comanche tribe kills his family and abducts his nieces. He doesn't even like the guy who is helping him look for his family throughout the movie because he's 1/8th Cherokee. He's a cunt and he will probably kill his niece when he finds her because she's probably too integrated within the tribe. Also this is Charlie McCorrey's movie and we're all just along for the ride. Lauren not immediately jumping on Charlie's crotch is probably the most baffling thing about this movie. We also have all the hot goss on Nancy “Backlot Special” Reagan. We also name every Little Debbie snack cake. It's very exciting. Happy Asshole month! In Europe, the need for sustainable water management solutions has been magnified by last summer's drought and record-breaking temperatures. The increasing severity of water stress remains a key driver behind the implementation of wastewater reuse. Particularly, in Southern Europe where water stress is more pronounced, the reuse market has witnessed greater development, although with challenges associated with funding and regulations. As a consequence, some Mediterranean countries have become notable leaders in the adoption of reuse projects, mainly focused on facilitating agricultural irrigation, and to a lesser extent irrigation of landscapes and recreational areas. In this episode, The Future of Water host, Reese Tisdale, is joined by Bluefield analysts Chloé Meyer, Zineb Moumen, and Ethan Edwards to discuss the research methodology behind their latest analysis of Europe's municipal wastewater reuse market. Key talking points: How is the EU policy landscape changing? Which countries are driving wastewater reuse in Europe? A look at market attractiveness by country What is the size of the market? Bonus Content: Reese brings in Bluefield Senior Analyst Ethan Edwards to discuss his analysis of the 3M PFAS settlement. While there has been a fair amount of analysis on how utilities will address PFAS and emerging contaminants, the 3M settlement is a path to targeting the production source. As discussed, Bluefield's updated PFAS remediation forecast estimates that drinking water utilities will spend a total of nearly US$13.5 billion between 2023 – 2030, up from a previously forecasted total of US$6 billion because of pending EPA guidlines and the legal settlements. A movie with a lot of layers, complexity, and visual beauty, it's one of my favorites and a movie worth experiencing for yourself.

Things discussed: Spring Game standouts: We like what we saw on the DL: Benny and Rooks are coming on, Jenkins impressed, can see how the Mike Morris/(read: Chris Wormley) style of pass rush is going to happen. Sainristil at nickel is more of a Blake Countess than a Dax Hill, but you can certainly make that work. They're going to be more subby than previous teams. Mullings would be the 3rd RB today if they weren't so desperate for a 3rd LB. MBB in the break: What if they all come back? Michigan has enough guys who can take a step forward that they can be favorites to win the Big Ten, but that's not a top-10 team. Portal needs to get them a wing who can defend pullups and shoot. Hockeytalk: Denver is a Red Berenson team: super skilled, super fast, so small that Ethan Edwards's brother is a 60th percentile-sized defender on that team. They're saying it's going to be 9-8 because they think their goalie is going to give up 9 goals. Key is playing sound defensively because Denver loves to stretch the puck up ice. WBB: hitting the in-conference transfer portal for a Naz replacement and a PG?

"That'll be the day" After a long three-year absence, the battle-scarred Confederate veteran of the American Civil War, Ethan Edwards, turns up on the remote and dusty Texan homestead of his brother, Aaron. In high hopes of finding peace, instead, the taciturn former soldier will embark on a treacherous five-year odyssey of retribution, when the ruthless Chief Scar's murderous Comanche raiding party massacre his family, burn the ranch to the ground and abduct his nine-year-old niece, Debbie. Driven by hatred of Indians, Ethan and his young companion, Martin Pawley, ride through the unforgiving desert to track down their lost Debbie; however, is the woman they lost and the prisoner in Scar's teepee still the same woman the searchers seek? “That’ll be the day.” Concerned about your kids these days? Wondering about their safety? Just how far would you go to keep them safe? Who would you rather come after you if you are abducted? Ethan Edwards or Marlin? The perfect time for Episode 18 of Pop Art, the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture and I’ll select a film from the more art/classic side of cinema with a connection to it. This time, my guest, blogger and film reviewer Drew of Drew’s Movie Reviews, has chosen the Pixar/Disney animated classic and ironic fish out of water film Finding Nemo, while I have chosen the John Ford/John Wayne classic western The Searchers, both with adults who are looking for abducted children. And here we answer such questions as: Why were Albert Brooks and Ellen DeGeneres cast in the movie? What makes Pixar movies so special? What makes The Searchers a great movie…or is it one? How does the Batcave come into all this? Why was the shark named Bruce? Should Andy Serkis get an Oscar? How many Hitchcock references can you name? And what is John Wayne’s real name? This week, we are bringing you another installment of Star Wars Film School. Since no film or franchise emerges out of a cultural vacuum, we think it’s worthwhile to take a look at some of the films and filmmakers who inspired and continue to breathe life into our beloved galaxy far, far away. This episode is dedicated to the legendary director John Ford, and specifically his 1956 masterpiece, The Searchers. This film is but one of the director’s many collaborations with John Wayne, and The Searchers is centered around his character, Ethan Edwards, as he sets off on a mission to rescue his niece, who was captured by Native Americans.

No U-Turns at the Drive-In

THE ROAD TO STAR WARS PART IV: A NEW SEARCH As we search for the makeup of one of our favorite films we come to the American Western; a gerne most famously dominated in the classic era of Hollywood by director John Ford and actor John Wayne. In what is considred by many to be among the greatest films ever made we see surprising influences on our Galactic Epic, including the source of Luke Skywalker's character, but we also encounter the film's dark reflection on the troubling aspect of the racism of John Wayne's character, Ethan Edwards. Wayne's disturbing performance is possibly the best of the actors impressive career, and the highlight of the film next to Ford's masterful direction. They are part of Star Wars History, they are part of Cinema History, they are part of American History, they are The Searchers!  Next Week: 2001: A Space Odyssey!

This week, Zach looks at racism, family, and the old west in John Ford's The Searchers. The Searchers is a 1956 American Technicolor VistaVision Western film directed by John Ford, based on the 1954 novel by Alan Le May, and set during the Texas–Indian Wars. The film stars John Wayne as a middle-aged Civil War veteran who spends years looking for his abducted niece (Natalie Wood), accompanied by his adoptive nephew (Jeffrey Hunter). Critic Roger Ebert found Wayne's character, Ethan Edwards, "one of the most compelling characters Ford and Wayne ever created." The film was a commercial success, although it received no major Academy Award nominations. Since its release, it has come to be considered a masterpiece, and one of the greatest and most influential films ever made. It was named the Greatest American Western of all time by the American Film Institute in 2008, and it placed 12th on the American Film Institute's 2007 list of the 100 greatest American movies of all time.[3] Entertainment Weekly named it the best Western of all time.[4] The British Film Institute's Sight & Sound magazine ranked it as the seventh best movie of all time based on a 2012 international survey of film critics [5][6] and the French magazine Cahiers du cinéma ranked The Searchers in 2008 number 10 in their list of the top 100 best films of all time.
