Architect Stanford White was shot three times at close range by millionaire Harry Kendall Thaw during a performance of Broadway comedy ‘Mamzelle Champagne' on 25th June, 1906. At first, the stunned audience thought it was part of the show. Thaw claimed White had “ruined” his wife, showgirl Evelyn Nesbit - often called America's first ‘It Girl' - who at just 16 had been lured into White's orbit and ‘seduced' by White - though a reading of Nesbit's diary makes it sound a lot more like rape.  But sadistic playboy Thaw was no knight in shining armour himself. His legal defense introduced the bizarre concept of dementia Americana—a supposed burst of "patriotic insanity" any red-blooded man might feel upon learning his wife had been wronged. Astonishingly, it worked.  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider (yet another) ‘trial of the century'; reveal what happened to Nesbit once the dust had settled; and explain what Thaw used to with his $100 bills… CONTENT WARNING: sexual sadism, abuse, coercive control, description of murder. A toxic mix of jealousy and vengeance over Thaw's wife, Evelyn Nesbit, a young model and actress who had been sexually assaulted by White years earlier. The case ignited a national scandal, revealing a world of exploitation, obsession, and privilege among New York's elite. Candice examines how Thaw's deep-seated insecurities, violent temper, and fixation on revenge collided in a deadly way.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! U Guys, a true triple threat, and Seussical's original Gertrude McFuzz, Janine LaManna is here! This week's BroadwayWorld Recap is a short and sweet little roundup of Bway news. Then I am joined by a true Bway legend, Janine LaManna! From standing by for Chita Rivera in Kiss of the Spider Woman, to originating the role of Gertrude McFuzz in Broadway's Seussical, Janine has truly done it all. She made her Broadway debut as Evelyn Nesbit in Ragtime alongside the original company, and eventually went on to work with such legends as Anne Reinking and Harold Prince. She shares about her experience of being the wife of a military officer and traveling the country with her family living in new places, simultaneously being a mother and continuing to work as a performer. We talk about her time playing Nickie in the Broadway revival of Sweet Charity with Christina Applegate, as well as replacing Bway star Sutton Foster as Janet Van De Graaff in the original Broadway production of The Drowsy Chaperone. Her other Bway credits include Swing!, Kiss Me, Kate, and The Look of Love. A true triple threat, Janine's talent is only matched by her grace, humility, and humor. U don't wanna miss this episode! On this Friday Follow-Up, we tweak one of our earliest episodes after Amber's later research uncovered that an aspect of this case has been wrongly reported for decades. It was one of the most salacious stories the country had ever heard: A famous architect had been gunned down in front of an audience of hundreds by a man who said he was defending his wife's honor. It so happened the wife was the world's first supermodel. The love triangle among architect Stanford White, model and showgirl Evelyn Nesbit and millionaire unhinged man Harry Kendell Thaw reached its climax on June 24, 1906. With hundreds of witnesses, the case was never a whodunit. Rather, it was a gripping tale of sex, lies and murder. "Crimes of the Centuries" is a podcast from Grab Bag Collab exploring forgotten crimes from times past that made a mark and helped change history. The Gilded Age in America was a time of great political corruption, wealth inequality and loosening of Victorian Age morals in the late 1800s.    No one person embodied all that the Gilded Age promised more than Evelyn Nesbit, a willowy, copper-haired beauty from Philadelphia. Arguably, she was the world's first ever supermodel. Before she was out of her teens, Evelyn was the most sought-after artist and fashion model in NYC. She was the original “it” girl, the model for the Gibson Girl and her haunting face graced the packaging of almost every commercial product of the age. She rubbed elbows with the rich and famous and even had time to have a tryst with John Barrymore. Her life was turbulent and eventful, but her fame peaked when she became embroiled in a murder. To share the incredible story of the Girl in the Velvet Swing is author of AMERICAN EVE, Paula Uruburu

Elizabeth McGovern was Oscar nominated for her portrayal of Evelyn Nesbit in Ragtime and, by the age of 21, had played leading roles in Once Upon A Time In America followed by The Handmaid's Tale and The Wings of the Dove. She is probably best known though for playing Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey. She is now on stage starring in Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The actress and musician joins Jessica to discuss her varied career so far and what drew her to the role of Martha. A misconduct hearing today will formally dismiss David Carrick from the Metropolitan Police, after he admitted twenty-four counts of rape and multiple sexual assaults. Carrick was finally stopped when one woman reported him in October 2021. Sir Mark Rowley, the Met Commissioner, has apologised to Carrick's victims, and says the force is currently also investigating 1,000 sexual and domestic abuse claims involving about 800 of its officers. Jessica is joined to discuss by Shabnam Chaudhri, who served as an officer in the Met for 30 years. Tomorrow will see the start of a second round of strikes by the Royal College of Nursing. The RCN says that this will be the biggest walkout so far, affecting 55 trusts in England - that's 11 more than last month. They are calling for a pay rise of 5% above inflation, with inflation currently sitting at 14%. The government says the demands are unaffordable and pay rises were decided by independent pay review bodies. NHS staff in England and Wales - including nurses - have already received an average increase of 4.75%. The union says that there will be a further two strikes in February in England and Wales, unless there is movement on pay by the end of this month. Pat Cullen is the General Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal College of Nursing, and joins Jessica. Today marks the 250th anniversary of the UK in the Antarctic following the first voyage of James Cook in 1773. In contrast to Cook's all-male crew in the 18th century, the UK's current polar leadership includes several women. What is it like to be a female leader in this field? Jessica Creighton is joined by Jane Rumble, the Head of Polar Regions Department at the UK Foreign Office, Professor Dame Jane Francis, the Director of the British Antarctic Survey and Captain Milly Ingham, the Captain of HMS Protector, The Royal Navy's ice patrol ship to find out. One of literary history's favourite characters – Alison the Wife of Bath – from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales is re-examined in a new book by Professor Marion Turner from Oxford University. Marion tells Jessica how the lusty life story of the medieval Alison who married five times has inspired other writers from Shakespeare to Zadie Smith.

Evelyn Nesbit is one of the original "Gibson Girls" from the late 19th century in the United States. She started posing for paintings at an early age and turned it into a full-fledged modeling career to support her family. Her likeness is well-known, even to this day. She grew up on the east coast with her mom and brother. Her dad passed away when she was 10-years-old leaving his family in debt and forcing them into survival mode. Evelyn experienced assult, abuse, entrapment, manipulation - you name it and she was traumatized by it. She often felt "stuck" with the men in her life until her husband killed her previous abuser and went to jail. She was able to turn her life around and do what she wanted to do after that.  Follow us: @homance_chronicles Send us a Hoe of History Request: homancepodcast@gmail.com Contact us: https://linktr.ee/homance

Crime Fam, we're sorry to do you dirty this week, but we both have stories without happy endings. But we hope you'll forgive us, because this set of bloopers is my favorite yet!For the first story, Bailey brings us the hideous William Bradford Bishop, who had everyone in his life, as well as the United States Government, convinced he was an overachieving, trustworthy, top-notch guy. They were all wrong, and Bailey will tell you what he did to reveal himself. If you already know anything about the second story, you also know it's also not a happy one. Not for the murder victim, not for the perpetrator, and especially not for the pawn in the middle of their childish rivalry. This is the seventh Architect Mayhem (!!) and it focuses on the 1906 murder of Stanford White, and how Evelyn Nesbit was the most innocent victim in the tug-of-war between White and millionaire Harry Thaw. But really, the bloopers were fun. Stick around. We've been waiting for you, and we're glad you've made it. Get comfy, here we go.

So, why not bring them on to introduce the episode. Mary, from "True Crime in Academia," joins Andrew to deep dive the murder of Stanford White with author Simon Baatz. Simon wrote The Girl on the Velvet Swing: Sex, Murder, and Madness at the Dawn of the Twentieth Century (2018). A few hard hitting questions that Simon helps us answer include: Why did Harry Thaw murder Stanford White? What led Evelyn to the vaudeville stage? Why do so many erroneously think that Evelyn had a love affair with Stanford White? Simon explains why Evelyn's story is so relevant in our current moment and why Stanford White's predatory behavior connects to the #MeToo movement. Simon gives his opinion on how Evelyn, Harry, and Stanford have been represented in pop culture, including Ragtime (the novel and musical), The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing, and the new Gilded Age TV series. And yes, Part 2 of our Gilded Age recap will be coming out on Friday and features a conversation about Stanford White (filmed at a Gilded Age mansion)! There seems to be a running theme with this week's episode- and it's love triangles! Well, one might be more of a rhombus, not sure, let's just say, It's Complicated.  Because how could we have Crimes of Passion without first having the passion? And who drives you more crazy than your significant other?? Evelyn Nesbitt was sometimes called the Marilyn Monroe of her times- a beautiful, photogenic and charming lady that had wealthy men falling at her feet. Kelsey pulls us onto the rollercoaster of life; her rise to fame, the drama of her love life, and her never-ending resilience. There's enough stories in her life to fill SEVERAL books (and it has). Love triangle #2 is more your standard variety- Boy meets girl, meets another girl, doesn't give up first girl. Chaos ensues. Parachutes are involved, it's not good.  To complete the trifecta of terror, Alanna ends it off with a Simpsons-centric crime. You might remember him from such roles as Troy McClure, it's the murder of actor Phil Hartman.  Tags: Crimes of Passion, Evelyn Nesbit, Harry Thaw, Stanford White, Els Van Doren, Els Clottemans, linktr.ee/castlesandcryptids  Website: castlesandcryptidspod.squarespace.com

It's a story worthy of a modern-day soap opera: Successful millionaires fight for the love of a young, beautiful, popular actress, creating a love triangle filled with luxury, social status (and the occasional meddling mother-in-law.) But it's also a story that we've seen recently, and in real life - wealthy, older men raping and trafficking underage girls, a murder of a ringleader, and millionaires going without punishment for committing various crimes. In a story filled with Jeffrey Epstein parallels, in this episode we talk about the murder of New York architect Stanford White; Harry Thaw, the man who killed him, and Evelyn Nesbit, the girl they fought over - and how this killing uncovered a disgusting part of the underbelly of the New York high. society scene of the 1900s.
