U Guys, a true triple threat, and Seussical's original Gertrude McFuzz, Janine LaManna is here! This week's BroadwayWorld Recap is a short and sweet little roundup of Bway news. Then I am joined by a true Bway legend, Janine LaManna! From standing by for Chita Rivera in Kiss of the Spider Woman, to originating the role of Gertrude McFuzz in Broadway's Seussical, Janine has truly done it all. She made her Broadway debut as Evelyn Nesbit in Ragtime alongside the original company, and eventually went on to work with such legends as Anne Reinking and Harold Prince. She shares about her experience of being the wife of a military officer and traveling the country with her family living in new places, simultaneously being a mother and continuing to work as a performer. We talk about her time playing Nickie in the Broadway revival of Sweet Charity with Christina Applegate, as well as replacing Bway star Sutton Foster as Janet Van De Graaff in the original Broadway production of The Drowsy Chaperone. Her other Bway credits include Swing!, Kiss Me, Kate, and The Look of Love. A true triple threat, Janine's talent is only matched by her grace, humility, and humor. U don't wanna miss this episode! On this Friday Follow-Up, we tweak one of our earliest episodes after Amber's later research uncovered that an aspect of this case has been wrongly reported for decades. It was one of the most salacious stories the country had ever heard: A famous architect had been gunned down in front of an audience of hundreds by a man who said he was defending his wife's honor. It so happened the wife was the world's first supermodel. The love triangle among architect Stanford White, model and showgirl Evelyn Nesbit and millionaire unhinged man Harry Kendell Thaw reached its climax on June 24, 1906. With hundreds of witnesses, the case was never a whodunit. Rather, it was a gripping tale of sex, lies and murder. "Crimes of the Centuries" is a podcast from Grab Bag Collab exploring forgotten crimes from times past that made a mark and helped change history. The Gilded Age in America was a time of great political corruption, wealth inequality and loosening of Victorian Age morals in the late 1800s.    No one person embodied all that the Gilded Age promised more than Evelyn Nesbit, a willowy, copper-haired beauty from Philadelphia. Arguably, she was the world's first ever supermodel. Before she was out of her teens, Evelyn was the most sought-after artist and fashion model in NYC. She was the original “it” girl, the model for the Gibson Girl and her haunting face graced the packaging of almost every commercial product of the age. She rubbed elbows with the rich and famous and even had time to have a tryst with John Barrymore. Her life was turbulent and eventful, but her fame peaked when she became embroiled in a murder. To share the incredible story of the Girl in the Velvet Swing is author of AMERICAN EVE, Paula Uruburu

Elizabeth McGovern was Oscar nominated for her portrayal of Evelyn Nesbit in Ragtime and, by the age of 21, had played leading roles in Once Upon A Time In America followed by The Handmaid's Tale and The Wings of the Dove. She is probably best known though for playing Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey. She is now on stage starring in Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The actress and musician joins Jessica to discuss her varied career so far and what drew her to the role of Martha. A misconduct hearing today will formally dismiss David Carrick from the Metropolitan Police, after he admitted twenty-four counts of rape and multiple sexual assaults. Carrick was finally stopped when one woman reported him in October 2021. Sir Mark Rowley, the Met Commissioner, has apologised to Carrick's victims, and says the force is currently also investigating 1,000 sexual and domestic abuse claims involving about 800 of its officers. Jessica is joined to discuss by Shabnam Chaudhri, who served as an officer in the Met for 30 years. Tomorrow will see the start of a second round of strikes by the Royal College of Nursing. The RCN says that this will be the biggest walkout so far, affecting 55 trusts in England - that's 11 more than last month. They are calling for a pay rise of 5% above inflation, with inflation currently sitting at 14%. The government says the demands are unaffordable and pay rises were decided by independent pay review bodies. NHS staff in England and Wales - including nurses - have already received an average increase of 4.75%. The union says that there will be a further two strikes in February in England and Wales, unless there is movement on pay by the end of this month. Pat Cullen is the General Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal College of Nursing, and joins Jessica. Today marks the 250th anniversary of the UK in the Antarctic following the first voyage of James Cook in 1773. In contrast to Cook's all-male crew in the 18th century, the UK's current polar leadership includes several women. What is it like to be a female leader in this field? Jessica Creighton is joined by Jane Rumble, the Head of Polar Regions Department at the UK Foreign Office, Professor Dame Jane Francis, the Director of the British Antarctic Survey and Captain Milly Ingham, the Captain of HMS Protector, The Royal Navy's ice patrol ship to find out. One of literary history's favourite characters – Alison the Wife of Bath – from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales is re-examined in a new book by Professor Marion Turner from Oxford University. Marion tells Jessica how the lusty life story of the medieval Alison who married five times has inspired other writers from Shakespeare to Zadie Smith.

Evelyn Nesbit is one of the original "Gibson Girls" from the late 19th century in the United States. She started posing for paintings at an early age and turned it into a full-fledged modeling career to support her family. Her likeness is well-known, even to this day. She grew up on the east coast with her mom and brother. Her dad passed away when she was 10-years-old leaving his family in debt and forcing them into survival mode. Evelyn experienced assult, abuse, entrapment, manipulation - you name it and she was traumatized by it. She often felt "stuck" with the men in her life until her husband killed her previous abuser and went to jail. She was able to turn her life around and do what she wanted to do after that.  Follow us: @homance_chronicles Send us a Hoe of History Request: homancepodcast@gmail.com Contact us: https://linktr.ee/homance

In public, he was a bon vivant who moved with old school wealthy and the nouveau riche. He was also a creep who participated in the sexual assault of several young women as part of a group of entitled men in New York's high society. A Creep, Harry Thaw, killed him on June 25, 1906, because of one such assault on actress Evelyn Nesbit who was 16. The trials of Harry Thaw caught the nation's interest and are a part of NYC lore. Crime Fam, we're sorry to do you dirty this week, but we both have stories without happy endings. But we hope you'll forgive us, because this set of bloopers is my favorite yet!For the first story, Bailey brings us the hideous William Bradford Bishop, who had everyone in his life, as well as the United States Government, convinced he was an overachieving, trustworthy, top-notch guy. They were all wrong, and Bailey will tell you what he did to reveal himself. If you already know anything about the second story, you also know it's also not a happy one. Not for the murder victim, not for the perpetrator, and especially not for the pawn in the middle of their childish rivalry. This is the seventh Architect Mayhem (!!) and it focuses on the 1906 murder of Stanford White, and how Evelyn Nesbit was the most innocent victim in the tug-of-war between White and millionaire Harry Thaw. But really, the bloopers were fun. Stick around. We've been waiting for you, and we're glad you've made it. Get comfy, here we go.

So, why not bring them on to introduce the episode. Mary, from "True Crime in Academia," joins Andrew to deep dive the murder of Stanford White with author Simon Baatz. Simon wrote The Girl on the Velvet Swing: Sex, Murder, and Madness at the Dawn of the Twentieth Century (2018). A few hard hitting questions that Simon helps us answer include: Why did Harry Thaw murder Stanford White? What led Evelyn to the vaudeville stage? Why do so many erroneously think that Evelyn had a love affair with Stanford White? Simon explains why Evelyn's story is so relevant in our current moment and why Stanford White's predatory behavior connects to the #MeToo movement. Simon gives his opinion on how Evelyn, Harry, and Stanford have been represented in pop culture, including Ragtime (the novel and musical), The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing, and the new Gilded Age TV series. And yes, Part 2 of our Gilded Age recap will be coming out on Friday and features a conversation about Stanford White (filmed at a Gilded Age mansion)! There seems to be a running theme with this week's episode- and it's love triangles! Well, one might be more of a rhombus, not sure, let's just say, It's Complicated.  Because how could we have Crimes of Passion without first having the passion? And who drives you more crazy than your significant other?? Evelyn Nesbitt was sometimes called the Marilyn Monroe of her times- a beautiful, photogenic and charming lady that had wealthy men falling at her feet. Kelsey pulls us onto the rollercoaster of life; her rise to fame, the drama of her love life, and her never-ending resilience. There's enough stories in her life to fill SEVERAL books (and it has). Love triangle #2 is more your standard variety- Boy meets girl, meets another girl, doesn't give up first girl. Chaos ensues. Parachutes are involved, it's not good.  To complete the trifecta of terror, Alanna ends it off with a Simpsons-centric crime. You might remember him from such roles as Troy McClure, it's the murder of actor Phil Hartman.  Tags: Crimes of Passion, Evelyn Nesbit, Harry Thaw, Stanford White, Els Van Doren, Els Clottemans, linktr.ee/castlesandcryptids  Website: castlesandcryptidspod.squarespace.com

But it's also a story that we've seen recently, and in real life - wealthy, older men raping and trafficking underage girls, a murder of a ringleader, and millionaires going without punishment for committing various crimes. In a story filled with Jeffrey Epstein parallels, in this episode we talk about the murder of New York architect Stanford White; Harry Thaw, the man who killed him, and Evelyn Nesbit, the girl they fought over - and how this killing uncovered a disgusting part of the underbelly of the New York high. society scene of the 1900s.

Rather, it was a gripping tale of sex, lies, and murder. The story made such headlines nationwide that, for the first time in American history, the jury had to be sequestered. The Gibson Girl was the idealized portrait of modern womanhood at the dawn of the 20th century, but Evelyn Nesbit's story was shockingly real, featuring the manipulations of two powerful older men, an unwelcome role in "the crime of the century," and at long last, a measure of peace in her later years in California. Although the picture makes Ray Milland's Stanford White into a paragon of virtue (rather than a serial abuser), The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing reminds viewers that Evelyn Nesbit survived the men who dragged her name through the mud. I share two brief excerpts from Nesbit's memoir 'Prodigal Days' (1934).

In 1901 Evelyn Nesbit, a chorus girl in the musical Florodora, dined alone with the architect Stanford White in his townhouse on 24th Street in New York. Nesbit, just sixteen years old, had recently moved to the city. White was forty-seven and a principal in the prominent architectural firm McKim, Mead & White. As the foremost architect of his day, he was a celebrity, responsible for designing countless landmark buildings in Manhattan. That evening, after drinking champagne, Nesbit lost consciousness and awoke to find herself naked in bed with White. Telltale spots of blood on the bed sheets told her that White had raped her. She told no one about the rape until, several years later, she confided in Harry Thaw, the millionaire playboy who would later become her husband. Thaw, thirsting for revenge, shot and killed White in 1906 before hundreds of theatergoers during a performance in Madison Square Garden, a building that White had designed. The trial was a sensation that gripped the nation. Most Americans agreed with Thaw that he had been justified in killing White, but the district attorney expected to send him to the electric chair. Evelyn Nesbit's testimony was so explicit and shocking that Theodore Roosevelt himself called on the newspapers not to print it verbatim. The murder of White cast a long shadow: Harry Thaw later attempted suicide, and Evelyn Nesbit struggled for many years to escape an addiction to cocaine. The Girl on the Velvet Swing, a tale of glamour, excess, and danger, is an immersive, fascinating look at an America dominated by men of outsize fortunes and by the women who were their victims. Your Host, William Powell, welcomes Stephen Yednock and Heather McMunigal to talk about the musical they are staring in, "Ragtime", from 2nd Star Productions. Dial 347.884.8997 to ask a question!  Based on the novel of the same name by E.L. Doctrow, Ahren’s and Flaherty’s Ragtime is a compelling epic capturing the American experience at the turn of the 20th  century. Tracking three diverse families in pursuit of the American dream in the volatile “melting pot” of turn-of-the- century New York, Ragtime confronts the dialectic  contradictions inherent in American reality: experiences of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair. Over the course of the show, the worlds of a wealthy white couple, a Jewish immigrant father and his motherless daughter, and an African American ragtime musician intertwine. Together, they discover the surprising interconnections of the human heart, the limitations of  justice and the unsettling consequences when dreams are permanently deferred. Featuring many of the historical figures that built and shaped turn-of-the-century America, including J.P. Morgan, Emma Goldman, Harry Houdini, Evelyn Nesbit and Henry Ford, this musical sweeps across the diversity of the American experience to create a stirring epic that captures the beats of the American  experience: the marches, the cakewalks and - of course, the ragtime. (Paranormal Experiences Come From Another Dimension) *** On a November day in 1941, two innocuous ads appeared in “The New Yorker” magazine for a dice game called simply “The Deadly Double.” But what started as innocent advertisements, became an ever-increasing mystery in a time of war. In early June of 2007, Tom Meyers and Greg Young sat around a laptop and a karaoke microphone, looked out over Canal Street in the Lower East Side and began recording the very first Bowery Boys: New York City History Podcast. For ten years the Bowery Boys podcast has brought the history of this extraordinary city to life -- the people, places and events which have helped shape our modern metropolis. In celebration of this anniversary, join them for their very first podcast event in front of a live audience as a part of the 2017 NYC Podfest festival. This show was recorded on April 9, 2017, at the Bell House, in Gowanus, Brooklyn. They talk about how they met, how they came up with the idea for their show and run through a list of their favorite and most notable podcasts. The Bowery Boys are joined by moderator Nat Towsen, host of the Nat Towsen Downtown Variety Hour every month at UCB Theater in the East Village. And stay tuned until the end! An unexpected guest arrives to present the Bowery Boys with a special gift. FEATURING: Stories of Eartha Kitt, Boss Tweed, ABBA, Evelyn Nesbit, P. T. Barnum, Tallulah Bankhead, Donald Trump, Varla Jean Merman, the musical Rent and, of course, Robert Moses and Jane Jacobs. boweryboyshistory.com Support the show.

(Samantha) In December 1900 the beautiful, fifteen year old Evelyn Nesbit arrived in New York. Within a year she became the “glittering girl model of Gotham,” the first iconic American sex-goddess. Her fame would transform into notoriety after June 25, 1906 when her millionaire husband, Harry Thaw, murdered Evelyn’s one time lover, Sanford White, in what was known by contemporaries as “the crime of the century.”

The Trial of the Century was a smoking- hot mess that made a mockery of justice and ultimately destroyed the life of  the luminously beautiful It Girl  Evelyn Nesbit.  Her cracked-out husband, Pittsburgh heir Harry K. Thaw, shot her paramour, world- class architect Stanford White, in the FACE, killing him before hundreds of witnesses.   The resulting arrests, court cases, and aftermath gripped a nation obsessed with the kinky stories of the rich and famous.  And NONE of this is exaggeration.
