Artists have a duty to claim that their most recent project is the best work they have ever done. But what if it's true? I'm so taken with David Gray's new album Dear Life (released January 2025) - and so too is David of course - that it seemed churlish to dwell too much on his earlier career success, no matter just how definitive that was. “I'm always all in with the new stuff. If I wasn't I would just retire. It's always a moment of total commitment. I like the danger of writing and recording. There is gold in them there hills and you have got to go and find it”. Dear Life is led by rhythmic singing and short-story style writing, underpinned by unusual song arrangements. But the songs catch on, almost every one a ‘grower'. It's one of those records that is shot-through with reflection, philosophy, mortality. You could say it's a mid-life record and there is nothing wrong with that, given how well it stands up to his classic breakthrough work White Ladder and his first decade of popular success. “I feel like these songs are strong enough to go shoulder to shoulder with the big songs”. His instincts this time around, are good. When David Gray takes to the stage on his extensive 2025 tour to play songs like Leave Taking, Fighting Talk and (recent single) Plus & Minus, he will not need to precursor them with an apology. The understated quality of the past 10 years' work is a run of form that may have gone unnoticed by the music industry mainstream, but also suggests that Gray has been building to a head of steam. If this was 2004, he would be releasing Dear Life into the world as a surefire classic album. But here we are in 2024 - algorithm powered and neck deep in social clips. Releasing a magnificent record into the content void of today guarantees nothing. Especially when you are running your own small record label as Gray now is. “You've got to go on a cookery show just to get the opportunity to play a song for two minutes.” White Ladder was one of those CDs everybody had. It came at the end of the CD era, one of the last albums that achieved cultural ubiquity. Lest we forget, the record was self-funded (on a budget of £5,000) and self-released. Inventing a sub-genre is one thing, and with White Ladder, David Gray did that - folktronica was the label the music press attached to it. But there was much more to it than that. In a sense, Gray pioneered bedroom pop, 20 years before it became huge on Spotify. Rex Orange County, Yellow Days, Alfie Templeman and a whole generation of others owe something to him. But his huge success with White Ladder will always leave him with something to prove. “The disaprovers are waiting every time you do something new. But I'm a very determined person. But then I love doing what I do. There is no trout farm for me. I just love doing this thing. And it's getting richer and richer. There is always more to put into song”. He is literally making music for Dear Life. It shows. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Maisie Adam continues the shocking story of a brutal attack at Paris Saint-Germain that turned close team-mates into bitter rivals, damaging lives, careers and reputations. The fragile harmony in the dressing room is finally and irrevocably broken with a training ground bust-up that has repercussions for the team in the Champions League. And pushes the embattled Kheira Hamraoui to breaking point. Meanwhile head coach Didier Olle-Nicolle who has continued to select Hamraoui for the team despite external pressures to drop her, finds himself at the centre of serious allegations of sexual misconduct involving a young PSG player. Suspended by the club while a formal investigation takes place a horrified and shocked Olle Nicolle must fight to clear his name. The claims against him are subsequently proved untrue and without any basis whatsoever but its a harrowing time for him, describing himself as “collateral damage” in the latest fall-out from the Diallo-Hamraoui affair. The two players themselves are both about to experience summers of discontent. For Diallo its the end of the road at PSG, a new contract failing to materialise. While for Hamraoui it soon becomes apparent she faces an uncertain, and for her an unhappy future at the club. There appears to be no end to her trials and tribulations. As the 2022/23 season starts Hamraoui is in near exile at the club, training alone away from the first team. For Diallo though she is effectively now unemployed, without a club, at the age where she should be approaching her peak playing days. But that is not the worst of her troubles. Because on the 16th September 2022 there's another knock at her door from the poilce and this time they have statements and wiretaps to back up their suspicions. She's arrested again – and this time charges will be made.Narrator Maisie Adam Interviews: Charlotte Harpur and Tom Williams Voices for interviewees performed by: Janine George, Chyna Johnson, Tom Roberts and Colin Ryan Translation for the Aminata Diallo interview: Laura Bennett Script consultant: Dave Bowler Researchers: Rob Carroll and Janet Hughes Assistant Producer: Jennifer Hanratty-Ball Editor: Kevin Hinde Assistant Commissioner for the BBC: Lizzi Doyle Commissioning Executive: Stevie Middleton Executive Producer: Craig South Writer and Producer: Jonathan SidesA PDI Media production for BBC Sounds and BBC Radio 5Live

Welcome to an audio-led edition of Unmade. Today we talk to Christian O'Connell, host of Melbourne's top FM breakfast show. And further down, a slight recovery on the Unmade Index. If you've been thinking about upgrading to an Unmade membership, this is the perfect time. Your membership includes:* Member-only pricing for our HumAIn and REmade (October 1) conferences;* A complimentary invitation to Unmade's Compass event (November);* Member-only content and our paywalled archives; * Your own copy of Media Unmade.‘Radio needs to change. It has to build a different model' Why Christian O'Connell is ready to be networkedIn today's podcast we talk to Christian O'Connell, who arrived from the UK six years ago and took his show on Gold 104.3 to Melbourne's number one breakfast show. The conversation was based around the launch of O'Connell's mentoring service, Finding Fire, but it was also a well timed opportunity to subtly remind a market distracted by the arrival of the Kyle and Jackie O Show into Melbourne that he's the biggest voice in the FM market.Gold's owner ARN Media has been trying to mastermind a takeover and breakup of rival Southern Cross Austereo. Most likely that would have seen O'Connell move across to a national metro breakfast show on Triple M.If a deal doesn't happen - and there's nothing currently on the table although it's likely to return - O'Connell might instead see his show networked into Sydney on ARN's WSFM, with Jonesy & Amanda - Brendan Jones and Amanda Keller - potentially making way by switching into a national drive slot.In the conversation, O'Connell makes clear that he has been talking to ARN's management, including CEO Ciaran Davis and chief content officer Duncan Campbell, about taking his live show into other markets.“I want the show to be more widely available,” he tells Unmade's Tim Burrowes. “That's my drive for the next couple of years. I did a national show in the UK for 12 years and I loved it. So here, I want the show to be more available. I do something different and I think that's of value.”And O'Connell is talking about more than a “best bits” package. “The magic of radio for me is live. I always has been. There's nothing better than when you hear a radio show and in the moment something opens up.”The conversation also focuses on how O'Connell has developed as a leader of his team, including lifting them up when The Fox's Fifi, Fev & Nick show briefly overtook them in the ratings. But O'Connell insists that being number one is not what matters to him. “If I was to design a show to be number one, it would be really bland. It would be like The Fox. It would be made of blandishments. I have to make a radio show that is about my values.”He also says that he deliberately resisted listening to the much talked about boundary-pushing first hour of Kyle Sandilands and Jackie Henderson's Kiis show into Melbourne, warning that rival shows are letting themselves be distracted by the arrival“You've got to be really careful that you don't let other shows and their mindsets bleed into your own. I'm hearing other shows that are doing that now. They're changing in the wrong way.”O'Connell also reveals that he still hankers after a return to talking about sport on the radio. In the UK he hosted the long running BBC sport-comedy show Fighting Talk. “One of the things I'd love to do is a version like that. That show was the most fun I've ever had in radio. It was a whole hour of opinions, arguments. Sports is entertainment and it should be treated like that.”Meanwhile, O'Connell sees the networking of big shows like his and the Kyle & Jackie O Show as the direction the radio industry is taking. “It's very clear what Ciaran's direction is, what he wants to do. It's very clear what I want to do. Radio here is ready for the next evolution.“Kyle coming into Melbourne is the start of it. Radio needs to change. It has to build a different model.”Unmade Index improvesThe Unmade Index improved from Tuesday's all time low, bouncing back by 1.28% to 466.5 points yesterday.Nine recovered by 1.52% to a market cap of $2.1bn while IVE Group was up 2.57%.The only stocks to fall were ooh Mediua, down by 0.74%, and Sports Entertainment group, off 7.14%This week's episode was edited by Abe's Audio.Time to leave you to your Thursday. We'll be back with more tomorrowHave a great day.ToodlepipTim BurrowesPublisher - Unmadetim@unmade.media This is a public episode. This attracted attention from other City supporters, with thousands following his fights from Manchester to all corners of the world as he came up against the best of the best including Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquaio. His 2008 fight with Juan Lazcano was held at the Etihad Stadium in front of 55,000 fans and fellow City mad stars Noel and Liam Gallagher carried his belts into the ring for his bout with Paulie Malignaggi. His thick Manchester accent and his humble and personable demeanour means he remains a huge hit amongst City fans - often stopping for autographs and photos on his regular visits to the Etihad Stadium. 23-year-old Campbell is Ricky's son and still in the early days of his boxing career, although he possesses all of the same enthusiasm for City. Jeanette Kwakye is former international athlete turned broadcaster. This British sprinter was five-time British champion, Olympian and world indoor silver medallist, competing in the Olympic final of the 100 meters in Beijing 2008. Since retiring as an athlete and becoming a journalist in 2013, Jeanette's become a regular broadcaster across the BBC, Sky Sports and Channel 5. Jeanette works across many sports, having anchored world championships and athletics, swimming and taekwondo, along with Olympic and Commonwealth Games. In 2020, Jeanette became the first Black woman to present boxing on British TV and regularly presents the BBC Women's Football Hour show, BBC Five Live Breakfast and Fighting Talk. She's also hosting an exciting new show for Sky Sports' this autumn, bringing the British Basketball League, Men's and Women's games, to our screens. In 2017, Jeanette wrote a children's book called Femi the Fox, which teaches the younger generations about West African culture, and in 2021, she was awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for her services to sports and sports broadcasting. Jeanette is incredibly open about her life as an elite track athlete - who as a youngster was sometimes a challenge to coach. We talk everything from the issue of drugs in sport and the revealing sports kit worn by female athletes (which Jeanette loved when competing) through to her own challenges with injuries and how it felt to miss out on London 2012, having started the year as Britain's fastest woman. We track Jeanette's career path to becoming a prominent sports broadcaster in a space where there were few black women, and how it feels to now be on the other side of the microphone being the first person to talk to emotional British athletes as they finish their events at major Championships.Find out more about The Game Changers podcast here: https://www.fearlesswomen.co.uk/thegamechangersHosted by Sue AnstissProduced by Sam Walker, What Goes On MediaA Fearless Women production

Martin's books 'Sit Down and Cheer - A history of sport on TV' and 'When Will I Be Famous - Travels through the dark side of show business' are available to buy now. Language is power. Words matter. Especially when we are trying to be inclusive. The sector is pushing towards being more inclusive but it's hard to know the measure of success. How do we know when we are getting it right and when we are getting it wrong? To help us answer this, we asked Ettie Bailey-King to join us in the van! From LiveAid to the recent Doctors without Borders Anti-racism campaign we cover all manner of communications wins and failures. We ask Ettie what she thinks about words and phrases like ‘Hard to Reach, ‘Rights-holder', and ‘Persons with Disability' and through some fighting talk encourage the sector to level up towards anti-oppressive language. Ettie Bailey-King (she/her) is an inclusive and accessible communication consultant. She helps people to connect through thoughtful language and deliberate design choices that work better for everyone. You can learn more about Ettie's work at ‘Fighting Talk' communications here.
