This week's show kicks off with a quick run-down of the remaining Round 2 application deadlines; on Monday and Tuesday there are a handful of schools with apps due. Graham then highlighted an important admissions tip that Clear Admit recently published, regarding whether the optional essay should be used. He then presented the Columbia Business School 2022 employment report, which led with financial services, followed by consulting; the graduating class have a huge average starting salary of $175,000. Graham then highlighted the two deferred enrolment events that Clear Admit is hosting on February 1 and February 8 with ten leading business schools. Signups are here: https://bit.ly/defer23 For candidate reviews, Graham and Alex tackle two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry: First up, Alex choses a candidate who dropped out of high school, but 13 years later is completing their undergraduate after stints in the private sector and in the army. They still need to complete the GRE or GMAT exam, but we think there is a lot to like, in terms of how they've appeared to successfully manage their unorthodox career to date. This week's second candidate also looks very promising, with one weak spot; a GRE of 318. Alex and Graham think that with the programs they are targeting, they should hear some positive news (assuming well-executed applications). Finally Alex and Graham discuss a candidate who ran the table with their R1 applications and has selected Michigan / Ross, despite having several other MBA options to consider. Some of those other options might appear to be more promising, but the nuances regarding each individual's decision making can lead to a variety of outcomes. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by Dennis Crowley in West Philadelphia. Thanks for listening, and for telling any fellow-MBA applicants about the show. Stay safe everybody!
Happy Independence Day to those Americans who might be celebrating! This episode begins with a discussion of recent activity of LiveWire; a few waitlist decisions are still being released, while new applicants are beginning to report their applications for next season (at least for Columbia's Early Decision round). Harvard Business School is scheduled to announce its 2+2 deferred enrollment decisions this upcoming week, closing out the 2021-22 decision-release season. Graham discussed the Economist ranking, and also highlighted an Adcom Q&A with NYU / Stern. your hosts also discussed GMAT numbers at top programs, highlighting a series published on Clear Admit. Graham also noted the upcoming MBA essay workshops, scheduled for July, signups are here: https://bit.ly/cambaessays Then Alex quizzed Graham with some 'real humans' lighting round questions. As usual, this episode features three ApplyWire entries: First up, we review a Taiwanese candidate residing in Canada. They've got a strong academic record, including a masters degree, and with 6 years of experience, it places them on the older end of the spectrum. Their GMAT score is solid but not outstanding for top programs. Their experience is accounting-focused, and they also are active in their communities, teaching financial literacy. Our second candidate has some quite interesting experience in the financial advising area, with three progressive moves. They have a specific goal in terms of a search fund, and their extra curriculars look positive. Alex and Graham worry about their GRE/GPA combination (320/3.19), this is the area they need to bolster, if possible. Finally Alex selects a candidate who has a low GPA (2.8) and a high GRE (330). Your hosts discuss the impact of these numbers on a candidate, and measures they may take to improve this aspect of the profile. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced in West Philadelphia, USA by Dennis Crowley. Please remember to rate and review this podcast wherever you listen!
Alex and Graham began this 150th episode of Wire Taps (podcast episode 234 overall) by reviewing some of the show's “greatest hits”. A huge thankyou to our listening audience for making this podcast a pleasure to produce, record, and share each week! Beyond the fanfare of a milestone episode, Alex highlighted more waitlist movement, and the anticipation of further activity in this area as Stanford and Chicago / Booth's decision releases are due this upcoming week. Graham highlighted a new admissions tip which focuses on the role of supplemental course work (aka transcript repair); this includes a deep-dive look at HBS CORe and MBA Math. Your hosts also discussed our new initiative regarding reviews, you can add yours here: https://bit.ly/clearadmitreviews Graham then highlighted the ongoing Application Overview workshop series he is hosting. This upcoming week includes Stanford, London Business School and UCLA Anderson. Signups are here: https://tinyurl.com/clearadmitevents For the WireTaps portion of the show, Alex picked out three ApplyWire entries: First up is a candidate who is focused on the environment and water management, both academically and through her career. She is a first generation African immigrant to the UK. She has really good goals that fit well with her profile. Essentially a lot to like, if she can perform well on the GRE. This week's second candidate is another first-generation applicant, originally from Morocco, now based in France. He is debating whether to pursue another masters program now, in France, or wait a few years to target top MBA programs around the world (Alex and Graham push for the latter choice). Finally Alex picks a candidate who is also first-generation (a theme this week!), who is targeting Harvard Business School only. Graham and Alex strongly advise her to also consider a few more programs which can absolutely help her in terms of her goals. This episode was recorded in Cornwall, England and Paris, France. It was produced, engineered, and cared for by Dennis Crowley in glorious West Philadelphia. Thanks for listening and please tell at least three people to tune in!

It's 2022 and Laura and Alex are not only celebrating a year since they followed Susan Miller's advice to create a podcast, but also a wonderful outlook for the year ahead by the woman herself. Episode 45 - Something Old Is Made… Old… Again The guys get in their way back machine this week and put together an episode structured remarkably like their earlier episodes. There’s streaming picks, a movie watched by all, and a game of trivia that a certain someone obviously dominates at… Pete jump on the grenade early and talks about the 90’s classic City Slickers. He does take some heat for watching something so old, but it’s a universally loved film, so the guys are able to let that go. But, as usual, Pete goes one step too far and goes even further back by watching the 80’s G.I. Joe cartoon. The nostalgia train only goes so far… Next up, Kevin makes short work of his time acknowledging and praising season 6 of Schitt’s Creek. Sure, he talked about it last week, but it’s THAT good. Next he discusses the Ben Platt show The Politician on Netflix and gives it an overall solid review. Next up, Opie watches The Banker on Apple TV+ which he gives a pretty stellar review of. He then does on a virtual courtship of Michelle Dockery by watching Defending Jacob on Apple TV+ and then turning around and watching the 2019 Downton Abbey movie. Finally Alex jumps all aboard the Pete Express and watches the classic Brendan Fraser flick, Bedazzled. He then takes a hard turn right back to Alex-Land by talking about The Last Kingdom on Netflix. And just in case that didn’t satiate your need for Alex-ness, he also talks the Lord of the Rings video game, Shadow of War. Finally, before the break, they guys talk about the new Chris Hemsworth film on Netflix, Extraction. Reviews are about what you’d expect if you’ve watched the trailer, but certainly no one hated it. After the break, the guys play a 2003 Entertainment version of Trivial Pursuit which puts Alex into a deeper hole than usual. Will he win? You’ll have to listen to find out!
