Microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment, exposing all of us through the water we drink, the food we eat, and even the air that we breathe. There is increasing evidence that microplastic exposure increases the risk of certain cancers, lung problems, and our endocrine function. These effects are even more concerning for growing children. What can we do about microplastics, and how can we protect our children? We are joined by Dr. Elizabeth Moore in this episode to discuss practical steps that parents can take to decrease our children’s microplastic exposure. This episode written by Drs. There are around 350,000 synthetic chemicals in use today and only a small fraction have been robustly tested for their long-term effects on our health. Many of these are used in manufacturing plastics and microplastics – the production of which has doubled since 2008 and is projected to triple by 2060.  Unknowns remain, but research is suggesting pervasive exposures to these manufactured substances is shaping human health. In particular, links are being identified with a range of non-communicable diseases, including some cancer types, metabolic disorders, neurological conditions and reproductive and developmental issues.  So, what do we know about how the chemical environment is influencing our health? Could AI and other emerging technologies shed new light on the effects of synthetic substances? And what does it all mean for regulation and wider policy protecting public health?  To discuss, our Chief Executive Jennifer Dixon is joined by: Tracey Woodruff, Professor at University of California, San Francisco, and Director of the Program on Reproductive Health and the Environment (PRHE).  Thomas Hartung, Professor at Johns Hopkins University, and Director of the Centre for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT).   Show notes Woodruff et al (2025). 1. “Bioaccumulation of Microplastics in Decedent Human Brains” (Nature Medicine, 2024)   This study confirms the presence of microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) in human brain tissue, particularly the frontal cortex. Researchers used pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and electron microscopy to analyze postmortem samples, finding polyethylene (PE) as the dominant plastic type. Brain tissue exhibited significantly higher plastic concentrations than the liver or kidney, with even greater MNP accumulation in individuals diagnosed with dementia. The findings raise concerns about potential neuroinflammation and long-term neurological effects, though causality remains unproven.   2. “Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Atheromas and Cardiovascular Events” (New England Journal of Medicine, 2024)   This study investigates the presence of microplastics in atherosclerotic plaques and their potential role in cardiovascular disease. Analyzing carotid artery plaques from patients undergoing endarterectomy, researchers found polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in 58.4% of plaques. Patients with MNP-containing plaques had a 4.53 times higher risk of heart attack, stroke, or death over a three-year follow-up. The study also linked MNP presence to elevated inflammatory markers (IL-18, IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6), suggesting that microplastics might exacerbate cardiovascular disease progression.

Orca mourns second calf since 2018 in a devastating report that J35 was seen floating her dead calf on January 1st, 2025. In this episode of the How to Protect the Ocean podcast, host Andrew Lewin discusses the tragic story of J35, a Southern Resident Orca, who lost her second calf, J61, shortly after its birth. The episode highlights several critical factors contributing to the high mortality rate of orca calves in this endangered population, which currently numbers only 73 individuals. Reasons for Calf Mortality: Food Scarcity: The primary prey of the Southern Resident Orcas, Chinook salmon, is in decline. The orcas rely exclusively on this species for sustenance, and with only a 20% survival rate for calves, the lack of adequate food supply is a significant concern. The orcas need a sufficient quantity of Chinook salmon to support their growth and health, especially during the early stages of life. Chemical Contamination: Orcas are among the most contaminated marine mammals due to bioaccumulation of toxins such as PCBs and DDT. These chemicals can impair reproductive and immune functions, potentially affecting the health of calves from birth. The presence of these toxins in the environment may contribute to the inability of calves to survive past their first year. Environmental Disturbances: Factors such as vessel noise and pollution disrupt the orcas' habitat, further complicating their survival. Increased shipping traffic and climate change exacerbate these issues, leading to a more challenging environment for the orcas. Reproductive Challenges: The Southern Resident Orcas are a long-lived species that take time to reach sexual maturity. With a low calf survival rate, the population struggles to maintain its numbers, especially as older individuals begin to pass away. The episode emphasizes the urgent need for conservation efforts, including habitat restoration and pollution control, to improve the chances of survival for orca calves and the overall health of the Southern Resident Orca population. Episode Summary: In this enlightening episode of Functional Health Radio, Dr. Kristin Hieshetter delves into the critical subject of detoxification, unraveling its complexities beyond the common misconceptions. She illuminates the interconnectedness of environmental toxins, dietary choices, and the importance of supporting the body's natural excretory pathways. With clarity and fervor, Dr. Hieshetter advocates for a proactive approach to health and wellness, questioning conventional wisdom and urging listeners to reclaim vitality through intentional cleansing. Dr. Hieshetter's narrative weaves through her professional evolution, personal experiences, and the sobering statistics on chronic illness and healthcare expenditures in the United States. Emphasizing the significance of detoxification, Dr. Hieshetter outlines a multifaceted process that nurtures the body's intrinsic capacity to heal. Insightful references to Ayurvedic medicine, environmental hazards, and the detrimental effects of certain dietary components offer a comprehensive framework for understanding and engaging in effective detox protocols. Key Takeaways: •             Detoxification extends beyond purging; it encompasses physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects leading to a rejuvenated sense of self. •             Environmental toxins and accumulated internal pollutants obstruct the body's natural functioning, leading to a myriad of health concerns. •             The correlation between toxic overload and chronic diseases, particularly cancer, highlights the need for diligent attention to detoxification methods. •             A structured and nurturing detoxification process, tailored to individual needs and preceded by proper preparation of the body's excretory systems, can lead to significant health improvements. •             Post-cleansing reintegration of foods with a focus on those low in harmful substances can further support long-term well-being. Notable Quotes: •             “Your skin is your third kidney… your skin is reflecting what's happening on the inside, and it's an ancillary route for toxins.” - Dr. Kristin Hieshetter •             “It's very subtle. Most of the studies are done at the later stages when we are in full toxic blowout and we have cancer or we have leukemia or we have a brain tumor.” - Dr. Kristin Hieshetter •             “Grains make your blood brain barrier leak, not just your gut, your brain. So if you want a healthy brain… you got to dump grains.” - Dr. Kristin Hieshetter •             “Cancer has become our index of chemical toxic exposures.” - Dr. Kristin Hieshetter •             “When you consider that an atom of one toxic metal like mercury can fit where a critical mineral should fit, it will then disengage these metabolic pathways and slowly, over time, chip away at those pathways until we hit a threshold where we don't feel good…” - Dr. Kristin Hieshetter Resources: •             Dr. David Perlmutter's book: “Grain Brain” •             Environmental Working Group (EWG) for water safety reports: EWG's Water Database •             Standard Process Cleansing Program: Standard Process •             Dr. Steven Gundry's list on lectins: Dr. Gundry's Lectin-Free Diet Tune in to the full episode of Functional Health Radio for a deep dive into detoxification with Dr. Kristin Hieshetter and discover transformative steps toward reclaiming your health. Please visit www.aftermeatbook.com to learn more. “The movement away from animal-based foods is already proceeding with tremendous momentum,” says Karthik Sekar, Ph.D. and author of AFTER MEAT (November 16, 2021). According to Dr. Sekar, Burger King and McDonalds have both introduced veggie burgers sourced from well-known, next-generation vegan food companies, Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods, and the publication, The Economist, declared 2019 to be the “Year of the Vegan”.   AFTER MEAT explores the technological reasons for moving away from animal products. “Animals are awful technology,” says Dr. Sekar, who supports his opinion by examining how inefficient it is to use cows, for example, to produce steaks, leather, and milk. According to Dr. Sekar, it takes more than a year to grow food to feed animals, and we “waste” more than ninety percent of what we feed the animal to reach the desired result, due to the fundamental physics of cow biology. These are irretrievably terrible metrics. We can do much better with alternative technology such as microbial fermentation, which will also be easier to innovate for taste, nutrition, and other qualities we care about. And all indications are that the future of food will ultimately be tastier, healthier, cheaper, kinder, and better for the environment. This will happen because we won't use animal products.  100% of the proceeds of AFTER MEAT will be donated to the following charities: The Good Food Institute; Animal Charity Evaluator's Recommended Charity Fund; Effective Altruism's Animal Welfare Fund; and Faunalytics.   How to support the podcast: Share with others. When we look at our understanding of eating disorders it soon becomes apparent that we are facing something that is multifaceted in nature and involves a complex set of causes and behaviours. The research on eating disorders is extensive and from this, several prevailing theories seek to address underlying causes. One of the ways we can begin to understand eating disorders is through the lens of neurobiology. In this episode, we explore this area with a psychiatrist who specialises in the neuroscience and treatment of eating disorders.Dr Jeffrey DeSarbo is a physician and psychiatrist who completed his medical internship and training in psychiatry through the New York University residency program and he is a graduate of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr DeSarbo's special interest in neurosciences has led him to a unique approach to assessing and treating eating disorders as well as other psychiatric conditions.Additional Info:At the 30:55 minute mark of the interview with Dr DeSarbo, I made reference to a paper that was published late last year looking at the bioaccumulation of pharmaceutical drugs by gut bacteria. This is a fascinating paper, published in September 2021 in Nature, and shows that bioaccumulation of pharmaceuticals by gut bacteria may be a common mechanism that alters drug availability and bacterial metabolism. Here is the reference: Klünemann M, Andrejev S, Blasche S, Mateus A, Phapale P, Devendran S, Vappiani J, Simon B, Scott TA, Kafkia E, Konstantinidis D, Zirngibl K, Mastrorilli E, Banzhaf M, Mackmull MT, Hövelmann F, Nesme L, Brochado AR, Maier L, Bock T, Periwal V, Kumar M, Kim Y, Tramontano M, Schultz C, Beck M, Hennig J, Zimmermann M, Sévin DC, Cabreiro F, Savitski MM, Bork P, Typas A, Patil KR. The Whole View, Episode 464:  Forever Chemicals: What are PFAS? Welcome back to episode 464! (0:28) Science has shown, pretty unequivocally, how harmful these chemicals are for decades. It's not recent science. And what we see in modern days is regulatory agencies not being able to keep up with capitalism demands. This topic is difficult to see in something other than a "conspiracy" lens. But that is why it's important to Stacy and Sarah now, more than ever, to make sure they stick to scientific research as much as possible. There are specific areas known to have high levels of PFAS. If you know you're in one of those areas, it's possible to test your blood for your exposure levels. Stacy reminds the audience that she and Sarah are not medical professionals. So, if you have any health concerns around this topic, be sure to see a doctor.   What Are Forever Chemicals? PFAS are a class of man-made chemicals used to make products greaseproof, waterproof, and stain-resistant. (7:30) They are "forever chemicals" because they and their breakdown products are extremely persistent, lasting thousands of years or more. But, unfortunately, we have no way to speed up the breakdown, so they end up bioaccumulating in the environment and our bodies. Of the more than 9,000 known PFAS compounds, the U.S. uses 600 alone! Countless products, including firefighting foam, cookware, cosmetics, carpet treatments, and even dental floss, contain PFAS compounds. PFAS stands for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances- chemicals with at least one aliphatic perfluorocarbon moiety (e.g., -CnF2n-). PFAS includes multiple subclasses of chemicals: PFAA - perfluoroalkyl acids and perfluoroalkylether acidsPFOS - perfluorooctanesulfonic acid  PFOA - perfluorooctanoic acid (C8, used to make PTFE polytetrafluoroethylene, aka Teflon) PFAA precursors Fluoropolymers Perfluoropolyethers other (primarily less reactive) PFAS  The most consistent feature within the class of PFAS is that their perfluorocarbon moieties do not break down or do so very slowly under natural conditions. This is why PFAS have often termed "forever chemicals." Because PFAS are persistent, they accumulate or concentrate in the environment, including water, air, sediment, soil, and plants. Elevated levels of PFAS and their widespread presence in environmental media and drinking water stem from industrial sites that produce or use PFAS, airports, military bases (fire-training and response areas), landfills, wastewater treatment plants, and the spreading of PFAS-contaminated biosolids. Some PFAS are highly mobile in either air or water. This allows them to travel long distances from their sources.  It's important to note that we don't metabolize PFAS molecules. Sarah recommends this great article and this review for more information.    How Do They Harm Health? A better question might be how do they not harm health because their detriment is incredibly pervasive. (10:50) Data from toxicokinetic studies of PFAA indicate that they are generally well-absorbed after ingestion. After absorption, they distribute blood to organs and tissues that receive high blood flow, such as the liver, kidney, lung, heart, skin, testis, brain, bone, and spleen. Because PFAA can occupy sites on multiple receptors, proteins, and cell interfaces in the body, they can produce physiological effects across various tissues. Nine nuclear receptors are activated (controls gene expression), including PPAR-alpha, which controls fatty acid beta-oxidation and is a major regulator of energy homeostasis.  They also bind to a variety of serum proteins, including steroid hormones and albumins, which are transport proteins (e.g., vitamin D-binding protein)  Scientists have found direct links (with mechanisms identified) between PFAS exposure and kidney and testicular cancer, thyroid disease, liver damage, developmental toxicity, ulcerative colitis, high cholesterol, decreased fertility, pregnancy-induced preeclampsia and hypertension, and changes in hormone functioning. Immune dysfunction, such as Asthma, Osteoarthritis, Crohn's & U.C., R.A., Type 1 diabetes, Lupus, and M.S, are also linked to PFAS. PFAA and the Immune System Effects on the immune system are some of the most well-studied health effects of PFAA. (14:51) Multiple lines of evidence support PFAA as immunotoxicants and, more specifically, immunosuppressants at small administered doses in rodents and measured serum concentrations in humans.  Findings of suppressed vaccine response in humans and T cell-dependent antibody response in experimental animals led the U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP) to classify PFOA and PFOS as presumed immune hazards to humans. In a recent draft toxicological profile, the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) extended this finding to PFHxS and perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDeA), identifying all four compounds as suppressants of antibody response in humans. They are also unregulated greenhouse gasses! Sarah explains that these chemicals are in our environment, all around, which makes them impossible to avoid. Also, there is data showing they can, in fact, be absorbed through the skin, not just when ingested, as many company websites indicate. Additional associations still need further study to identify mechanisms, but dose responses are very damning! Obesity & Diabetes: A Review of Epidemiologic Findings Association with risk of cardiovascular diseases Obesity (dose response) Type 2 diabetes Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease Cardiovascular disease Osteoporosis PFAS magnifies metabolic effects of poor diet PFAS Buildup and Our Bodies Even more worrisome, this study showed 100% of breastmilk tested contained PFAS. An analysis of the available breast milk PFAS data from around the world showed that while the phased-out PFOS and PFOA levels have been declining, the detection frequencies of current-use short-chain PFAS have been increasing (with a doubling time of 4.1 years). This is consistent with the idea that they are forever and build-up. So even with using less, we're still seeing a build-up over time. There is a ton of current legislation pending to limit and/or ban PFAS in cosmetics. For listeners who might not know, Stacy is a huge advocate for clean beauty and safer skincare. She works with Beauty Counter to help get safer products into consumer's hands and uses her background in government to lobby for safer beauty standards. With all the safer skincare legislation Stacy has seen in recent years, she decided to research the history of PFAS to see if even more legislation is necessary. It turns out- it is. Sarah has recently gotten into the "Dark History" YouTube series by Bailey Sarian. Episode 1 is on this very topic, "The DuPont Chemical Poisoning."  The film "Dark Waters" (which Sarah just watched with a free Showtime trial) is a not-quite-as-cool Erin Brokovich approach to going into detail.   History: Discovery to Litigation  Stacy runs through a quick timeline: (25:52) 1930 General Motors and DuPont formed Kinetic Chemicals to produce Freon. 1935 Dupont opened "one of the first in-house toxicology facilities" on the advice of a DuPont in-house doctor named George Gehrmann. The facility was meant to thoroughly test all du Pont products as a public health measure to determine the effects of du Pont's finished products on the "health of the ultimate consumer" and that the products "are safe" before going "on the market".  6 April 1938 a 27yo research chemist worked at the DuPont's Laboratory with gases related to DuPont's Freonrefrigerants. When an experiment he was conducting produced an unexpected new product: polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE), a saturated fluorocarbon polymer—the "first compound in the family of Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) marketed commercially." It took ten years of research before polytetrafluorethylene (introduced under its trade name Teflon) became known for being "extremely heat-tolerant and stick-resistant." 1950s 3M manufactures PFAS, according to the 2016 lawsuit brought against 3M, 3M had "disposed of PFCs, and PFC-containing waste at a facility is owned and operated in Oakdale, Minnesota (the "Oakdale Facilities")" during the 1950s. It contaminated residential drinking water wells with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals. It later became a city park after extensive cleanup. 1951 "The DuPont chemical plant in Washington, West Virginia, began using PFOA in its manufacturing process." 1954 DuPont received an inquiry about C8's "possible toxicity." 1956 A study at Stanford found that "PFAS binds to proteins in human blood." 1960s DuPont knowingly buries hundreds of drums of C8 on the banks of the Ohio River  1963 The Navy began to work with 3M to develop aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF). 1961 A DuPont in-house toxicologist said C8 was toxic and should be "handled with extreme care." 1965 DuPont sent an internal memo describing preliminary studies that showed that even low doses of a related surfactant could increase the size of rats' livers, a classic response to exposure to a poison. 1970s 3M (appears to) discover PFAS accumulate in human blood. 3Ms own experiments on rats and monkeys concluded that PFAS compounds "should be regarded as toxic." 1976 The Toxic Substances Control Act provides EPA with authority to require reporting, record-keeping and testing requirements, and restrictions relating to chemical substances and/or mixtures. Certain substances generally excluded from TSCA include food, drugs, cosmetics, and pesticides. This list did not disclose any PFAS contaminants. 1983 3M announced their $6 million hazardous waste cleanup from their disposal processes.  1998 "Dark Waters" lawyer, Robert Billott, took a case representing Wilbur Tennant, a W.V. farmer, whose had a herd of cattle decimated by strange symptoms. 1998 The EPA was first alerted to the risks of PFAS—human-made "forever chemicals" that "never break down once released and they build up in our bodies." In a 2000 Times article, the EPA said that they first talked to 3M in 1998 after they were first alerted to 3M's 1998 laboratory rat study in which "male and female rats [received] doses of the chemical and then mated. When a pregnant rat continued to get regular doses of about 3.2 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, most of the offspring died within four days."  Summer of 1999 Bilott filed suit. 2000 a study widely detected PFOS in wildlife throughout the world" and that "PFOS is widespread in the environment." They said that "PFOS can bioaccumulate to higher trophic levels of the food chain" and that the "concentrations of PFOS in wildlife are less than those required to cause adverse effects in laboratory animals." 17 May 2000 3M stopped manufacturing "PFOS (perfluorooctanesulphonate)-based flurosurfactants using the electrochemical flouorination process," which is a "class of chemicals known as perfluorochemicals (PFCs). Stacy didn't even get into how the Navy and other public services used them to fight fires and increase environmental fire with Aqueous Film Forming Foams (AFFF). 17 May 2000 3M stops manufacturing Scotchgard because of their "corporate responsibility" to be "environmentally friendly." Their tests proved PFOS, an agent that 3M used in the fabrication of Scotchgard— which lingers in the environment and humans. Barboza said that 3M's "decision to drop Scotchgard" would likely affect DuPont's use of PFOAs in the manufacturing of Teflon. Their testing showed "it does not decompose, it's inert—it's persistent; it's like a rock." August 2000 Bilott discovers PFOA or C8 in DuPont's dumping sites Fall of 2000 Bilott gets access to 110,000 pages of documents dated back to the 1950s of DuPont's "private internal correspondence, medical and health reports and confidential studies conducted by DuPont scientists." March 2001 DuPont settled the lawsuit filed by Billot on behalf of Tennant for an undisclosed sum. Bilott sends a 972-page submission to directors of all relevant regulatory authorities: EPA and US AG demanding "immediate action to regulate PFOA 31 August 2001 Bilott files a class-action suit on behalf of thirteen individuals in the "Leach case." 23 November 2004 The class-action lawsuit settled and "established a court-approved scientific panel to determine what types of ailments likely linked to PFOA exposure." This led to thousands of residents then opting to pursue individual lawsuits after medical monitoring showed harm.  2005-2006 The C8 Health Project undertaken by the C8 Science Panel "surveyed 69,030 individuals" who had "lived, worked, or attended school for ≥ 1 year in one of six contaminated water districts near the plant between 1950 and 3 December 2004." 2006 The EPA brokered a voluntary agreement with DuPont and eight other major companies to phase out PFOS and PFOA in the United States. 2014 The EPA's Federal Facilities Restoration and Reuse Office (FFRRO) developed and published a fact sheet which provided a "summary of the emerging contaminants perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), including physical and chemical properties, environmental and health impacts, existing federal and state guidelines, detection and treatment methods. 2016 The EPA "published a voluntary health advisory for PFOA and PFOS," which warned that "exposure to the chemicals at levels above 70 parts per trillion, total, could be dangerous." 13 February 2017 The 2001 class-action suit that Bilott had filed against DuPont, on behalf of the Parkersburg area residents, resulted in DuPont agreeing to pay $671 million in cash to settle about 3,550 personal injury claims. These claims involved a leak of perfluorooctanoic acid—PFOA or C-8— used to make Teflon in its Parkersburg, West Virginia-based Washington Works facilities. DuPont denied any wrongdoing. Fall 2017 abnormally high levels of PFAS found in Belmont, Michigan, became one of the first places where PFAS contaminations caught the media's attention.[71] Wolverine Worldwide, a footwear company, was said to be the cause due to their use of Scotchgard to "treat shoe leather" and had dumped their waste in that area decades ago. 2017 PFAS are on Canada's 2019 chart of substances prohibited by the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA) and by Prohibition of Certain Toxic Substances Regulations, 2012. These substances are under these regulations because they are "among the most harmful" and "declared toxic to the environment and/or human health," are "generally persistent and bioaccumulative." The "regulations prohibit the manufacture, use, sale, offer for sale or import of the toxic substances listed below, and products containing them, with a limited number of exemptions." [72] 10 January 2018 According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services's Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), studies in humans with PFAS exposure show certain PFAS may affect growth, learning, and behavior of infants and older children, lower a woman's chance of getting pregnant, interfere with the body's natural hormones, increase cholesterol levels, affect the immune system, and increase the risk of cancer." 30 January 2018 three branches of the EPA exchanged chains of emails with OMB, DoD, HHS, and the Pentagon, to put pressure on the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). It aimed to censor a report that measured the "health effects" of PFAS that are "found in drinking water and household products throughout the United States." An email by an unidentified white house administration forwarded by OMB said that "The public, media, and Congressional reaction to these numbers is going to be huge. The impact to EPA and [the Defense Department] is going to be extremely painful. We (DoD and EPA) cannot seem to get ATSDR to realize the potential public relations nightmare this is going to be."  March 2018 The United States Department of Defense's (DoD) 's report to Congress said the test they conducted showed the amount of PFAS chemicals in water supplies near 126 DoD facilities "exceeded the current safety guidelines." [65] The DoD "used foam containing" PFAS chemicals "in exercises at bases across the country." The DoD, therefore, "risks the biggest liabilities" concerning the use of PFAS chemicals, according to Politico (published May 2018) 21 June 2018 The Department of Health & Human Services Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry(ATSDR) 697-page draft report for public comment, "Toxicological Profile for Perfluoroalkyls," was finally released. June 2019 Described as a "huge step toward cleaning up the prevalence of and prevent further contamination from PFAS chemicals in-ground, surface and drinking water," the Department of Environmental Services of the state of New Hampshire submitted a "final rulemaking proposal" for new, lower maximum contaminant levels. They then filed a lawsuit against Dupont, 3M, and other companies for their roles in the crisis in drinking water contamination in the United States. The lawsuit claims that the polluted water results from the manufacture and use of perfluorinated chemicals, a group of more than 9,000 compounds collectively known as PFAS.[2] September 2019, Andrew R. Wheeler, EPA Administrator, met with industry lobbyists and said that "Congressional efforts to clean up legacy PFAS pollution in the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal 2020" were "just not workable." Wheeler refuses to "designate PFAS chemicals as "hazardous substances" under the Superfund law." 1 October 2019 A lawsuit filed in the Merrimack County Superior Court by 3M and two others against the state aimed to prevent the new permitted levels for PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, and PFHxS from implementation.  4 October 2019 over 100 scientific experts representing many countries "recommended that a group of hazardous chemicals"—"Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), its salts, and PFHxS-related compounds"—be eliminated to better protect human health and the environment from its harmful impacts." 10 March 2020 EPA announced its proposed regulatory determinations for two PFAS in drinking water. In a Federal Register notice, the agency requested public comment on whether it should set maximum contaminant levels for PFOA and PFOS in public water systems.  April 2021: Landmark bipartisan legislation proposed to protect all Americans and our environment from harmful forever chemicals known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The package establishes a national drinking water standard for select PFAS chemicals, designates as hazardous to allow the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to clean up contaminated sites  https://debbiedingell.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=2975 June 2021: No PFAS in Cosmetics Act introduced with bi-partisan support, coinciding with the publication of a study finding over half of cosmetics contain them. One study found toxic 'forever chemicals' widespread in top makeup brands. The act would require the Food And Drug Administration to ban the chemicals' use in such products within 270 days. June 2021 They also reintroduced the Personal Care Product Safety Act, a bill that would take a major step forward to update our laws governing cosmetics. These laws have largely stood unchanged since 1938. [caption id="attachment_45315" align="aligncenter" width="740"]Source: https://www.ewg.org/pfaschemicals/what-are-forever-chemicals.html[/caption] See this link for an even more detailed timeline of PFAS and toxic chemicals.   What Are PFAS In? PFAS functions in many capacities, including surfactants, friction reducers, and water, dirt, and oil repellents. (50:01) As such, they are used in a wide variety of consumer products to confer nonstick (waterproof, greaseproof, and stainproof) and low-friction properties.  Examples of products that contain or coated with PFAS include: Some grease-resistant paper, fast food containers/wrappers, microwave popcorn bags, pizza boxes, and candy wrappers  Nonstick cookware  Stain-resistant coatings used on carpets, upholstery, and other fabrics  Water-resistant clothing  Umbrellas, tents, any fabric that repels water (pet bed covers, some mattresses, shoes, etc.) Cleaning products  Personal care products (shampoo, dental floss) and cosmetics (nail polish, eye makeup)  Paints, varnishes, and sealants Electronics Some industrial glass and plastics PFAS are also used directly or as technical aids (dispersants and emulsifiers) in many industrial applications like metal coatings, lubricants for machinery, membranes, and firefighting foams.  PFAS are used in the synthesis of or as adjuvants in pesticides, in medical procedures and products, and in many other applications. PFAS in Cosmetics The FDA has a voluntary registration program (VCRP) which shows an overall decrease in use (about half from 2019 to 2020).  But their site states- "because registration and product listing are voluntary, this data cannot draw definitive conclusions about the types and amounts of PFAS present in registered cosmetics or to determine which cosmetics may contain PFAS but have not been registered in the VCRP." [caption id="attachment_45319" align="aligncenter" width="740"]Source: https://www.fda.gov/cosmetics/cosmetic-ingredients/and-polyfluoroalkyl-substances-pfas-cosmetics[/caption] The Environment and Water Supply Because of their widespread use, release, and disposal over the decades, PFASs show up virtually everywhere: soil, surface water, the atmosphere, the deep ocean—and even the human body.  The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Web site says that the agency has found PFASs in the blood of nearly everyone it has tested for them, "indicating widespread exposure to these PFAS in the U.S. population." Scientists estimated that more than 200 million people—most Americans—have tap water contaminated with a mixture of PFOA and PFOS. These are at concentrations of one part per trillion (ppt) or higher.   Problems with PFOA-Free (PFOS-free, PTFE-free) The most well-studied of these substances, PFOA, and PFOS, have been linked to various health problems. (59:45) Bad press and class-action lawsuits have put pressure on companies to discontinue the use of PFOA and PFOS, but not PFAS as a chemical class. The regulatory bodies have not kept up with the chemical industry either! When some major manufacturers phased out long-chain PFAS, most industries turned to structurally similar replacements. These include hundreds of homologues with fewer fluorinated carbons (short-chain PFAS) or other less well-known PFAS (e.g., per- and polyfluoroalkylether-based substances). Producers marked these replacement PFAS as safer alternatives because of their presumed lower toxicity and lower level of bioaccumulation in human blood. However, several lines of evidence suggest that short-chain PFAS are not safer alternatives.  Research demonstrated that short-chain PFAS can be equally environmentally persistent and are even more mobile in the environment and more difficult to remove from drinking water than long-chain PFAS. Bioaccumulation of some short-chain PFAS occurs in humans and animals. For example, fish research suggests they can do more than the long-chain compounds they aim to replace.  Short-chain PFAS also can be more effectively taken up by plants. However, a growing body of evidence suggests they are associated with similar adverse toxicological effects as long-chain PFAS. The ongoing accumulation of persistent chemicals known or potentially hazardous increases human and environmental health risks over an indefinite period. Look for PFAS-free specifically. It's not enough to be PFOA, PFOS, and PTFE-free.   What Can We Do About It? The problem with these chemicals is that there unavoidable. However, we can take steps to protect ourselves. (1:05:01) Make sure the makeup brands you're using test for safety! PFAS and toxic chemicals are the kind of thing someone wouldn't know about unless they checked and tested the product for them. If you shop Beautycounter, use code cleanforall20 for 20% off your purchase. Of course, you can always email Stacy for advice at stacy@realeverything.com! Avoid plastics and coated papers for food storage whenever possible. Also, avoid nonstick cookware or look for ceramic coatings that are PFAS-free, like Le Creuset or Greenpan or silicone liners. Filter your water. Stacy and Sarah love AquaTru, which they talked about in Episode 406. Also, be sure to think about other exposure areas, such as clothing, carpeting, etc. Call Your Representatives! April 13, 2021, House representatives introduced the PFAS Action Act of 2021, a comprehensive 40-page piece of legislation that would require the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to take several significant PFAS regulatory actions. Keep Food Containers Safe from PFAS Act (H.R. 2727) is soon to be reintroduced by Michigan Rep. Debbie Dingell. Call your representatives to support the proposed environmental justice plan that specifically calls out forever chemicals, tackles PFAS pollution by designating PFAS as a hazardous substance, setting enforceable limits for PFAS in the Safe Drinking Water Act, prioritizing substitutes through procurement, and accelerating toxicity studies and research on PFAS." The new administration could carry out all of these goals unilaterally through executive action without Congress's cooperation. Dan Kildee (MI) and Brian Fitzpatrick are heading the bipartisan PFAS Task Force. They have a LONG list of people in the task force with goals.  No PFAS in Cosmetics Act Personal Care Product Safety Act Natural Cosmetics Act (not updated since introduced in 2019) Also, Stacy encourages you to text Better Beauty to 52886, which will cover these bases.  Support advocacy groups like Environmental Working Group, Toxic-Free Future | Science, Advocacy, Results, Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, Earthjustice: Environmental Law: Because the Earth Needs a Good Lawyer | Earthjustice other local groups. EPA says reverse osmosis (but not filters, like Brita, unfortunately) removes PFAS.  Lastly, don't get suckered into PFAS detoxes! Currently, there is no established treatment for PFAS exposure. However, blood levels will decrease over time after a reduction in exposure to PFAS.

CHEMICAL WEAPONS moved from the battlefield to the farm field after World War II. 1080 is a WMD-Weapon of Mass Destruction! SODIUM FLUOROACETATE: Sodium monofluoroacetate (or fluoroacetate), has the chemical formula FCH2COO-Na+, and is a highly toxic compound primarily used as a pesticide known commercially as Compound 1080. 1080 FLUOROACETATE IS EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS—1080 is classed by the World Health Organisation and the EPA as an extremely hazardous pesticide - CLASS 1A ECOTOXIN POISON. 1080 is a proven endocrine disrupter and impacts upon the body’s major organs. Just one teaspoon could kill 100 people. The only sane and effective method of balancing ecosystems is to use the components of the living system to manage itself!  Because of its isolated location New Zealand is the ideal environment for a countrywide program of RESTORATIVE ECOLOGY to show the world that ecosystem management can ONLY be done by using nature's methods. The Permaculture Principle "The Problem IS the Solution!" points to the fact that issue with the overpopulation of "invasive species" is purely caused by the absence of apex predators. The New Zealand owls and raptors are too "small." The only viable method of establishing a self-sustaining, self-balancing ecosystem is to introduce one or more apex predators capable of keeping the pest species in check. The ultimate aim of Restorative Ecology is to set up ecosystems harmonize themselves without any human intervention. Thus by introducing one or more owls from Australia to manage the indigenous Australian possums this would keep the population under control, while still providing non-poisoned meat and fur for the trappers...thus serving an elite couture industry. A countrywide program to get school children to make owl houses for the Powerful Owl and/or the Barn Owl would get the next generation interested in ethical ecology and the health of their nation. In every way...environmentally, physical and mental health, fiscally, morally, ethically, scientifically and socially the 1080 campaign is destroying New Zealand via the criminal use of a grotesque weapon of war! SHORT LIST OF TALKING POINTS WHAT IS IT:—Sodium MonoFluoroAcetate is a CLASS 1A POISON first synthesized 1896 by Belgian Frederic Swartz—Hitler was told it was too dangerous to use as a chemical weapon—1940-48 Monsanto buys patent and manufacturers it—The Wigley family business Tull Chemical took over patent and plant from Monsanto in 1955—New Zealand buys 90% of their production—America under Nixon banned 1080 in 1972 due to it killing the bald eagles. New Zealand started using 1080 for pest control by 1957. WORST POSSIBLE POISON: 1080 is called a CLASS 1A POISON  because it is a chemical weapon that causes extreme suffering and death as it interferes with the energy production in the cells and halts aerobic respiration. 3% is metabolized to fluorocitrate which messes with the enzyme that run the Krebs cycle. Death is slow, gruesome and inhumane. It was used by Saddam Hussein against his political enemies. 1080 use in any country is not only terrorism against its human and non-human inhabitants. CHEMICAL WARFARE: The NZ Government is engaged in a full on war against introduced "pests" which they say compete with and kill the native birds and other fauna. Their campaigns "Zero Invasive Predators" or "Predator Free 2050" speak to their intentions to keep at this chemical warfare—the end result of which will be the loss of the majority of native species and the brain damaging and disease of the human population. Even trace amounts damage mitochondrial DNA...In Whanganui where there is a 1080 factory "Orillion" and landfill for 1080 waste there are reports of retarded children, miscarriages, stillbirths and congenital malformations to the children of pregnant Maori women following aerial drops. BAITS: The 1080 poison is mixed with cereal and green die and made into baits, which are aerial dropped from helicopters over the native bush, streams and water catchment. The baits kill everything either directly or by secondary poisoning as carnivores eat the insects, birds and herbivores that die. A farmer who lost 570 ewes following an accidental 1080 drop on his farm said that 6 months later sheep were still dying. Around 4,000 tonnes of 1080 poison baits per year are dropped on New Zealand, enough to kill 60 million people, & the quantity increases yearly. 100 tonnes of those spoiled and expired baits are buried in landfills around the country. CLEAN GREEN: The Clean Green image of New Zealand is plainly under attack, as no other country is so fiercely killing both introduced and native species alike. Hikers report that after a drop the forests resound with the screams of dying animals and then they are silent...not even bird song. There is also the danger that sublethal traces of 1080 or its metabolites will end up in produce that NZ exports. ALL ANIMALS SENTIENT BEINGS: In 2015 New Zealand also publicly declared that they recognized that all animals are sentient beings, and then they indiscriminately continue to kill them in the most extreme torturous way possible. Revealing a deep seated hypocrisy and performative contradiction. CHEMICAL WEAPONS moved from the battlefield to the farm field after World War II. Chemical ecology and chemical agriculture are oxymorons. Systemic, nonselective, ecosystem-wide violent and inhumane poisoning of an ecosystem can never claim to be rational, sane or backed by “good science.” “Everything is out of kilter in the ecosystems where it is used!” It creates “imbalance” in the numbers of living creatures in an ecosystem and is highly destructive to the life-giving quality of the soil and water. YOU CAN'T BALANCE AN ECOSYSTEM WITH CHEMICALS WITHOUT KILLING EVERYTHING IN IT...including the forest and the microbiome itself. The restorative ecological way of reducing invasive species numbers is not to kill them but use them as a resource to feed the Apex predators. Thus supporting the ecosystem to balance itself. NEED FOR LARGER RAPTORS: New Zealand is going to have to introduce at least one more apex predator species. The assisted migration of the Powerful Owl, Rufus Owl or Barn Owl from Australia and the distribution of specifically designed OWL HOUSES is the ideal solution to the 1080 debacle. This is a permanent self-sustaining solution which comes at very little cost to the taxpayer, with NO POISONING of the land and water. LARGER APEX PREDATOR: As PEST species are used as food for both native species and STRATEGIC AMBASSADOR SPECIES brought in from neighboring countries to balance out the food chain. These ambassadors are generally a slightly larger apex predator introduced when the native apex predators are either too small or too few to control population numbers of the “pest” species. NATIVE POISONS FOR BAIT STATIONS: There must be a worldwide ban on open-ecosystem dropping of poisons, that is just common sense, however that is not to say poisons couldn’t be used in special pest-specific bait stations using natural biological poisons which are not ecosystemic.  Scientists have found a natural poison that tests show can kill rats in 5 to 10 minutes. The New Zealand native plant TUTU (Coriaria arborea) is poisonous to stock, but doesn’t lead to secondary poisoning, this could be used in cereal baits for rats and possums. GRAND SOLAR MINIMUM climate extremes and crop loss means that the Native Bush will become a vital resource to keep people alive and healthy as society is disrupted by the chaos of epic scale floods, mudslides, fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts, volcanic activity and famine. MAKE LOVE NOT WAR: Need to change thinking from combat to waste not want not and compassionate conservation. The four guiding principles of compassionate conservation used in the 21th Century are: 1. First Do No harm, 2. Individuals Matter, 3. Value All Wildlife, and 4. Peaceful Coexistence via Trophic Level Management ensuring that all levels of the trophic cascade are well balanced so the so called problem of “invasive species” are NOT a problem but a solution!!!! CALL FOR INTERNATIONAL HELP?  BAN 1080 HOMESTAY NETWORK: To encourage an international environmental legal movement, the New Zealand anti-1080 movement could set up a free homestay network system for visiting international environmental protection organizations, environmental scientists, ecology expert witnesses, lawyers, activists, restorative ecologists, doctors, researchers and PhD students interested in doing a thesis on 1080 use in New Zealand. The BAN 1080 Homestay Network especially encourages experts in natural ecosystem balancing and restoration, biodiversity, terraforming, forest revival and permaculture designers who work on a countrywide and global scale. This Homestay Network will further the efforts to establish New Zealand as a showcase for the most advanced ecological principles, environmental right practices and Natural Justice. The project would lead to the promotion of eco-education, ecotourism, eco-education and research, besides improving local livelihood and promoting ecoarchology and cultural values. The most important and popular career will soon be as a permecologist OR permaterraformer ie: restorative planetary management. Herbert Marcuse said in his book One Dimensional Man,  “The facile historical parallel with the barbarians threatening the empire of civilization prejudges the issue, the second period of barbarism may well be the continued empire of civilization itself. ****************** 1080 SOLUTIONS ~ ADVANCED RESTORATIVE ECOLOGICAL MANAGEMENT  Sodium MonoFluoroAcetate was first synthesized in 1896 as a chemical weapon. It is a Class 1a Poison that causes extreme suffering and death as it interferes with the energy production or aerobic respiration of cells, ie: the Krebs cycle. Death by 1080 is slow, gruesome and inhumane. The chemical weapon aerial drops of the super poison 1080 throughout the New Zealand forests result in human death, mutation, cancer, miscarriages and stillbirths, plus the violent death of farm animals and pets. You simply cannot have a thriving environment if you are indiscriminately killing off the entire food chain down to the microbiome of the soil, and including the very native species you are trying to save. Thus the New Zealand government will ultimately come to the conclusion that open ecosystem poisoning is not only an ineffective pest control method, but is pernicious, calamitous and maleficent. It is only a matter of time before the New Zealand conservation methods are going to have to emerge from the dark ages and a new age of regenerative, restorative, and balancing methods of ecosystem management are adopted. We have come too far in heart and mind to descend to such a degree of barbarity and cruelty. Conventional industrial and governmental environmental methods have relied on dilution and dissipation for dealing with noxious byproducts of their activities. The progressive sciences however have proven that both dilution and biological degradation are faulty and inadequate to the task, when considering the profound subtlety, omni-dispersive and ubiquity of nature and natural systems. Bioaccumulation of noxious substances up an ecosystem food web ensures that dilution and dissipation doesn’t work. Both government and industry can no longer continue on with their dirty business as usual when we now know about the hado effect of the imprinted water from Emoto, morphogenetic fields from Rupert Sheldrake, the fructification and spiral flow of water via the work of Schauberger, water and the life of the cell Gerald Pollack, quantum consciousness of Stuart Hameroff and that Healing is Voltage of Dr. Jerry Tennant, and the electromagnetic nature of existence, plus Bruce Lipton and epigenetics. All such advances in science point to the fact that we must change our methods of industry and governance and heal our relationship to the planet. Indeed we must change ourselves! Biodegradation of 1080 is a joke as it kills the very micro-organisms that are said to biodegrade it. Even if it does degrade it still spreads the element fluoride over the entire country...and if they keep it up, it will continue forever until everything is dead, because poisonous control of ecological systems doesn’t work to control “pest species” in an open ecosystem. Rather ecosystems must be made proportionally symmetrical by synergistically balancing the tropic layers within the ecosystem. If they are unbalanced then human intervention requires that new species of apex predators (or other ecosystem partners) be introduced and established to balance out the predator-to-prey numbers. This is the only morally intelligent answer to the burgeoning numbers of so-called “invasive species,” (possums, rats, stoats, deer and wild pigs). We just have to “balance” the food web, not exterminate it, thus it is obvious that omnicidal poisoning is contrary to effective conservation and ecology. Advanced naturalistic, restorative ecology makes up for the problems of past human intervention and allows ecosystems to balance themselves, which results in maintaining both balance and the self-sustaining mechanism of balance. Besides ecosystem trophic layer management, the only other pest control method necessary would be changing our ideological perspective from “pest management” to “resource management.” The Department of Conservation should be concerned with ecosystem resource utilization and these outlawed “non-indigenous pests'' are in fact highly nutritious FOOD for the native food chain. Plus they represent a back up survival food resource for humans during the upcoming Grand Solar Minimum Global Freeze. The hollow fiber of Possum fur provides extra warmth and lite weight to fabrics. Thus one of the most advanced and economically viable fabrics during the global chill of the Grand Solar Minimum will be high-tech clothing made from merino and possum hair. A NZ Grand Solar Minimum cold weather survival clothing industry for the global market would provide million$ and new right-livelihood jobs, while displacing those few criminal profiteering politicians, corporations and pilots who are presently terrorizing the nation and condemning their own souls to everlasting hell. The alleged problem of “invasive species” is no longer a problem but a solution via Trophic Level Management ensuring that all levels of the trophic cascade are permanently self-balancing. In which these non-native nuisance species are used as food for both native species and strategic ambassador species brought in from neighboring countries to balance out the food chain. These ambassadors are generally a slightly larger apex predator introduced when the native apex predators are either too small or too few to control the “pest” species population numbers. New Zealand is in need of larger raptors and is going to have to introduce at least one more apex predator species to fill the top of the bush food chain. The assisted migration of the Powerful Owl, Rufus Owl or Barn Owl from Australia and the distribution of specifically designed OWL HOUSES is the ideal solution to the 1080 debacle. This is a permanent self-sustaining solution which comes at very little cost to the tax payer, with NO POISONING of the land and water. Given the right components an ecosystem will take care of itself.Instead of teaching the kids to become psychopathic killers of helpless animals the schoolkids could be put to work building the raptor nesting boxes and tracking their installation in a national grid throughout the country. These bird houses must be made of natural materials, built to last and erected at the ideal height in the canopy for each particular species of owl. Considering the Grand Solar Minimum climate upheaval and the catastrophic natural disasters which will be decimating wildlife populations for the next 30-70 years, compassionate ecology in association with the introduction of strategic ambassador species is the ideal method of self-sustaining ecosystem management - in a world thrown into chaos by epic scale floods, mudslides, fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts and volcanic activity. Thousands of species will be on the move anyway due to shifting weather systems and loss of appropriate habitat, thus it is up to us “enlightened human stewards” to assist their migrations in ways that serve them and the existing trophic cascades. The restorative ecological way of reducing invasive species numbers is not to kill them but use them as a resource to feed the Apex predators. Thus supporting the ecosystem to balance itself. The New Zealand government has much more urgent responsibilities than the ruinously poisoning of the country, making it uninhabitable for beast, bird and human alike. Establishing ecological homeostasis of organisms in harmonious connection with their surroundings requires working with nature instead of against it. This Win:Win Ecology is an infinitely more intelligent, economical, safe and humane way of going about conservation in that it supports the health of the entire ecosystem and environment (including humans) and enhances the strength and stability of the global gene pool of valuable species. The four guiding principles of compassionate conservation used in the 21th Century are: 1. First Do No harm, 2. Individuals Matter, 3. Value All Wildlife, and 4. Peaceful Coexistence. “Every time you try and improve on Nature by going against it you damage yourself, for Nature is your very being.” Anthony Demello Intervention with a Class 1A super ecotoxin can obviously only bring insidious, dubious and ruinous results. The more poison they drop and longer this goes on, the greater will be the disastrous effects for the entire nation of New Zealand. Rather than a futile all-out war against nature, it is obvious that ecosystems can only be rectified and self-regulated using the methods of Nature herself. A restorative ecological management program must be undertaken in New Zealand, not just so that our “exports will be clean” but so that we can save the heart and soul of the nation.  Now is the time to evolve beyond corpo consciousness to more advanced and intelligent, Nature compliant methods of conservation, ecology and agriculture, for the repercussions of industrial barbarism are undermining the very foundations of civilization and our capacity to be human. Towards that end, together we can imagine, experiment and manifest this advanced, innovative naturalistic emergent ecology that uses uncommon sense to rectify and redeem our human relationship to the earth, to the betterment of all and with harm to none. Thereby this restorative ecological renaissance speaks to the deepest of our inherent values and sensibilities, reconciling the fact that human beings are a small but crucial part of a vastly and intricately connected system of living and non-living things. There is a contagious psycho-spiritual disease of the human soul, a parasite of the mind, that is currently manifesting itself in the form of unprecedented conflicts and crises on a global scale. This collective psychosis or mental virus -- which Native Americans have called wetiko -- covertly operates through the unconscious blind spots in the human psyche, rendering us oblivious to our own madness and compelling us to act against our own best interests. Wetiko distorts our perceptions by stealth and subterfuge, acting through us while simultaneously remaining hidden. Unconstrained by conventional laws of time and space, this 'bug' in the system deceives us by working with the projective tendencies of our mind to appear external to and other than ourselves. Thus, the conflicts and crises which threaten the collapse of political, social and economic systems, and perhaps even of the biosphere itself, are nothing less than a revelation of our own internal darkness, the side of our nature that we all too often deny.

Biotoxin Accumulation (bioaccumulation of toxins) is the basic concept of foreign and endogenous substances building up in the body. This buildup can during any time in a person's life (from in utero womb development throughout your lifetime). These "toxins" cause dysregulation of normal cell function and may contribute to many chronic illnesses and specifically neurological disorders. As they can affect the central nervous system, this post is focusing mainly on how the body reacts to biotoxin accumulation. Recent studies (e.g. by the CDC and Canada) have shown that most American adults and children of both genders have bioaccumulated numerous toxic pollutants in their body. https://mybiohack.com/blog/bioaccumulation-biotoxin-accumulation-detox. Key Takeaways: I had become a “mold canary.”  Finding and managing mold is a very insidious process. You realize a year into feeling bad that you are dealing with mycotoxins, mold fragments and it is triggering histamine response issues. It doesn’t happen overnight. (5:00) Learning to understand MOLD and the remediation process for myself has made me a better practitioner because I know how to help people who can’t afford to spend $10,000-$20,000+ on remediating their houses. Which is more common than not. Living with mold sensitivities often comes with warning signs. For example: If your nose starts to tingle when walking into a certain space. You can learn to work with these sensitivities and move on from it. There is hope.   Patients often feel shame and confusion when presented with the reality that MOLD could be triggering symptoms. (14:00)   I have fought so hard to find physicians that would ask questions, investigate, or think outside the box. I would welcome a physician who was problem-solving on my behalf.-Sarah MOLD comes in a lot of different flavors: Fungal, fungal infections, CIRS and mycotoxins. Bioaccumulation can cause you to be sick for years after exposure (20:00) The body should be able to handle mycotoxins. But if your cup of mycotoxins gets to full, you will begin having symptoms. If your detox pathways are already blocked, just a little bit of exposure to mycotoxins can push you over the edge. (21:20) Neurological and hormonal issues are triggered by mycotoxins.   Many people don’t notice symptoms until they start to impact the nervous system. (migraine and light sensitivities) 23:00   CIRS-Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (Dr.Shoemaker put a name to this in the 1990s). A starting agent (exposure, severe stress, auto accidents) puts the process of inflammation into gear (GI distress, chronic pain, respiratory issues, skin issues). Where to start? Ready to start your journey of recovery? Call for an onramp session with Dr. Tessier (30:00)   IEP’s-Indoor Environmental Professionals (some are MOLD illness literate)    Go to ISEAI.org to find an Indoor Environmental Professional. (33:00)   Testing your home-It is complicated. Be ready to have a dialogue with the contractor. Use a “tester” that is different than the contractor who will be “doing” the remediation.    Go to ACAC.org- for additional certified contractors What to look for? Your contractor should come in with TOOLS!  Particle counter, Thermography imaging camera (temperature differences can indicate MOLD), Slide impact vacuum, Hyper Barometer. Ask-Do you door in wall air testing? (40:00) About 25% of patients get better simply from getting out of the moldy environment. (50:00) Favorite forms of  DETOXing-Taking charcoal, sauna, binders, well call (generic available), glutathione. NAC-Everyone should be on this biofilm buster. Good for general lung health. Tolerated better than glutathione.    “I’m in love with NAC”-Dr.Tessier (900mg capsule) “MOLD and Lyme go hand and hand because they BOTH suppress and alter the immune system.”-Dr.Tessier (58:00)   MTHFR (Yes, and….) OVERVIEW: In this episode of Fitness & Finance, Aimee Carlson, entrepreneur and host of podcast, The Toxin Terminator, shares how she began her journey of eliminating toxins from her life, some useful first steps you can take today and more.   EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: What was Aimee’s upbringing like?  Aimee is a registered mechanic and worked in the petroleum and mechanic businesses, which she believes was the main source of her toxic exposures.    Aimee is not anti-medicine, but has found most doctors are only treating the symptoms you’re presenting with and not looking at you holistically or connecting the dots between seemingly unrelated symptoms.  When and how did Aimee realize her environment was harming her?  There are over 80,000 chemicals available for use in products sold in drugstores and the US has only banned the use of 9 of those chemicals; manufacturing standards in the UK and other countries are much more strict.  Pharmaceutical companies are the ones funding the approval of drugs.  It’s not realistic to eliminate all toxins from your life, so Aimee says to focus on your home because you can’t remove a toxin from the entire environment.  A first step would be to address your water sources; if you can’t afford to get a whole-home filtration system, Aimee suggests a shower head filter as a starting point.  Aimee suggests using lemon—this can be used to rinse your fruits and vegetables because it helps remove dirt, and it supports your liver and kidney function—but if you have frequent UTIs, lemon can make that issue worse.  Aimee also loves apple cider vinegar.  The number one thing is to remove anything with added fragrance from your home—unscented isn’t good enough, it should say fragrance-free.  Aimee also recommends getting rid of products that include parabens, phthalates, and sodium laurel sulfate.  Bioaccumulation can lead to toxic overload, which presents as very broad symptoms like fatigue, sleeping poorly, skin sensitivity and rashes, headaches, gut issues, etc.  Some solutions are pretty immediate, and some solutions take more time, because your body didn’t end up in a chronic disease state overnight.  Aimee is introducing a new segment on her show called First Steps, where a listener will come on air and share what they’re struggling with, Aimee will give them 1-2 changes to commit to making for the next 30 days, and then they’ll come back on air to share how those changes have affected their lives.   3 KEY POINTS: The American healthcare system is reactionary, not proactive, and often treats symptoms and not the whole person.  You have to do your research to determine products safe for your home, where you can control most of the toxins you expose yourself to.  You can decide how far you want to go with it, but even taking a few small steps towards reducing the chemicals and toxins in your home can go a long way.  TWEETABLE QUOTES: “If it was being produced in this country, if I could buy it in a story, we live in the United States for crying out loud, we’re not a third world country, so it had to be safe. Why would I question it? Then I started finding out just because it’s sold in a store, doesn’t mean it’s safe for us.” –Aimee Carlson “The body is made to remove toxins. We remove them through our breath, we remove them through sweat, our blood removes it, our kidneys, our livers… but when we inundate it through bioaccumulation, we get into this state called toxic overload.” –Aimee Carlson  RESOURCES MENTIONED:  Schedule a time to talk with Erik. This is a first in a series on artificial sweeteners and ‘natural’ sweeteners commonly used. We’ll cover why some are considered toxic, what problems with some of the others are, and which are considered safe and possibly useful. The list we’ll cover list in the order of usability. BestDon’t use any sweetener at all. While on keto your desire for sweet food will diminish and the fewer you have the faster you will reach that point.
