During his years as a journalist, he managed to elicit revealing statements from tyrants and the oppressed, but there was one person he never persuaded to open up to him—his mother. He wanted to know just one thing: who his father was. It wasn't until he was in his 50s that she confided to having been raped, aged 15, by a priest – and even then, not all her information was reliable. Alongside his career, the search for his mother's abuser has haunted him, adding further layers of stress to a life already marked by alcoholism and insecurity. Once upon a time television news was dominated by men like Walter Cronkite, Chet HUntley and David Brinkley. Some might call it an old boys club. Today, the sight of a woman in the anchor's chair is commonplace. For this, we can thank Barbara Walters. In 1976 she became the first female host of a network nightly news program – and it did not go well. She was shunned, ridiculed, glared at by her co-anchor and eventually replaced. Instead of giving up, Walters transformed herself, becoming a legendary longform interviewer. She talked to presidents, celebrities and, famously Monica Lewinsky. Walters went on to host ABC's “20/20" for 25 years and “The View” for 17 more. She died two years ago at the age of 93. Journalist Susan Page has long been fascinated by Walters, her drive to succeed, and how she changed our understanding of news. Page wrote about her in the new book, “The Rulebreaker: The Life and Times of Barbara Walters.”

Nixon and Watergate

This episode is one of final thoughts on Richard Nixon. Our thoughts cover a number of areas.   We start with the shameful treatment he received from the national news media and how they have actively worked to keep the public in the dark on the  facts of Watergate. This was a problem both when it occurred and even today as an enormous amount of easily verifiable documentation has come to light that has exposed misconduct across the board by just about every entity involved in the Watergate story. We will look at the current status of the prosecutorial misconduct complaint that was received last year at the United States Justice Department and continue to encourage you to weigh in on the case so it is not swept under the rug. We also examine, as best we could, the one lingering question that we felt we never fully resolved from our 144 episode examination of this historic period of American History. Why did a man as revered as John Doar, Chief Counsel to the House Judiciary Committee,  decide not to investigate on his own the material provided to him by the Watergate Special Prosecutor's Office?  It appears to be an elusive question if you believe as I do that people do not suddenly become dishonest. There is no history of John Doar being anything other than an honorable man. So we asked six experts on Watergate, who either lived through it, or studied it extensively as historians: Bob Bostock, writer of much of the exhibits located at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library, Dwight Chapin, President Richard Nixon's right hand man and appointments Secretary during most of his Presidency, Geoff Shepard, the author of three outstanding books on Watergate and widely recognized as the World's leading expert on it, and three historians Michael Koncewicz , of NYU and author of "They Said No to Nixon"Kevin Kruse, of Princeton University currently working on a biography of John Doar,Tim Naftali,  the former Director of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and a CNN Contributor. All six of them were gracious enough to  either answer me directly or pointed me to material that would be of assistance. Then we move on to open ended mysteries, like the involvement of the intelligence agencies in the overall story of Watergate, and the exculpatory nature of the actual tapes that are now far more readily available to the public in places like Nixontapes.org run by historian Luke Nichter or his two outstanding books on the subject matter.  ( The Nixon Tapes 1971 - 1972 and The Nixon Tapes 1973  http://lukenichter.com ) Finally we will look back on this greatest of World Leaders who so fundamentally changed the world we live in today. As we recount his many achievements including the most important one. An effort, that has probably touched the lives of everyone on Earth in one way or the other.  For it was Richard Nixon, 37th President of the United States, that poured billions of dollars into Cancer Research that has changed the diagnosis of this deadly set of diseases from a death sentence into a chance for life. It is here at the end of this epic five  season podcast documentary, that we make our final case that Richard Nixon belongs among the pantheon of our greatest leaders alongside  George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

The U.S. spent the first ten months of 1949 in a recession. Competition for the advertising dollar was stiffer. There were now over two-thousand-six-hundred AM and FM radio stations in the country, and TV was becoming a serious threat. Over one-hundred Television stations were on the air. Only two Network Radio shows had ratings higher than a 20. Just two years earlier, there were fifteen. Radio's average Top 50 ratings were their lowest since 1937 and network radio revenue dropped for the first time since 1933. Meanwhile, NBC, ABC, CBS, and the Dumont Network reported a combined TV income of $29.4 Million. But advertisers were learning that TV production costs were much greater than radio's. The extra money had to come from somewhere. Radio budgets were the likely source. On December 18th, 1949, NBC broadcast an episode of America United with a panel discussion on estimates and predictions concerning 1950. It was moderated by David Brinkley, at the time NBC's Washington commentator. The post-World War II world had been chaotic. Europe was rebuilding slowly as the US and Russia became the two superpowers. That same day, as the Philadelphia Eagles were beating the Los Angeles Rams in the 1949 NFL Championship Game, Nikita Khrushchev was made The Soviet Communist Party's secretary of the Central Committee, and single-party Communist elections were held in Bulgaria. Two days later, Josef Stalin was awarded the Order of Lenin as part of celebrations for his seventieth birthday.

You cannot live your best life until you allow yourself to be happy. You must give yourself permission and make the choice to be happy. Otherwise, you're just pushing a broom through the room of your life. ~ David Brinkley Do you remember the Tim McGraw song, Live Like You Were Dying? David Brinkley knows exactly how that feels. At age 49, David received a cancer diagnosis, giving him only 18 months to live. As David tells us, “Every perspective that you have in life changes when somebody tells you there's a clock and that clock is running out.” But rather than turn to anger, David recognized the freedom in letting go of the “To-do” list he kept, as we all do, and turned to celebrating every moment he had, which also required him to be thoughtful about the people he surrounded himself with and the choices he made every moment. How often do you tell yourself you'll get to something you've been wanting to do after you check everything off your daily list? And how often do you ever get to the bottom of that list and give yourself a reward? Here at Brilliantly Resilient, we've learned, as David has, that every day holds joy, and a reward, if we choose to be happy. But, as David reminds us, we must give ourselves permission to make that choice. We're delighted to report that David is still enjoying life five years after his initial diagnosis, and the wisdom he shares in this episode of the Brilliantly Resilient podcast is something we should all incorporate into our daily outlook. Tune in to hear more, and put that broom back in the closet! Let's be Brilliantly Resilient together! XO, KS & MFB

To coincide with the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Marcia Franklin talks with historian Douglas Brinkley, Ph.D., about his 2012 biography of iconic CBS newsman Walter Cronkite, who famously announced Kennedy's death to a national TV audience on November 22, 1963. In "Cronkite," Brinkley (no relation to newscaster David Brinkley) drew on his access to Cronkite's private papers at the University of Texas and interviews with more than 150 of Cronkite's friends and family members to write the first major biography of the "the most trusted man in America." Franklin and Brinkley discuss the highlights of Cronkite's career and what distinguished him from other broadcasters, as well as some of the eccentricities of Cronkite's personality that Brinkley discovered while researching the book. Brinkley, a professor of history at Rice University, was in Coeur d'Alene to speak at the Idaho Humanities Council's annual Northern Idaho Distinguished Humanities Lecture. In this our third episode of RICHARD NIXON and WATERGATE, we have our second part of a look at the journalists who covered Watergate in 1973 and 1974.  Most of them were truly awful, but not all. In this episode you will hear from journalists, like Dan Rather and David Brinkley, who show a stunning lack of self awareness,  in one case especially where the person actually says they could not stand Richard Nixon and had no respect for him but "I never attacked him on the air, and I always treated him fairly"....No s#&! He actually says that!!! (Tune in to hear it for yourself) But we do move on to some truly ethical, fair minded, and good people in the media who deserve to be shown for the champions of integrity they actually were  in the history of journalism. Many of the journalists featured worked for one major news network ,  ABC News. We will listen to oral histories of Howard K. Smith, Ted Koppel , Mike Wallace (the one CBS exception)  and Barbara Walters as they describe the President they covered and interviewed throughout their careers. In the end, you will get to hear from President Richard Nixon himself, the victim of arguably the most unfair media coverage in the history of politics, and what he says will shock you!! In his early 1990's  interview with Hugh Sidey,  he actually defends the importance of protecting the media's right to cover political figures however they see fit.

Welcome to Day 1850 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom A Firm Foundation – Daily Wisdom Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps.  We are on Day 1850 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek.  Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge.  So we are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps.  Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy.  https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16)  How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!    If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life.  So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from David Brinkley, and it is: A successful person is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him. A Firm Foundation To be successful in any life endeavor, you must be willing to handle trials and hardships and turn them into advantages.  But, unfortunately, many people will give up when criticized by others or when they run into headwinds of any kind.  This type of defeatism will stifle forward progress, and that progress will cease altogether before too long.  We cannot allow this to happen in our lives.  We are created to glorify God, and we cannot do that if we are prone to give up when trials come into our path of success.  So when others throw bricks at you and try to thwart your progress, pick the bricks up, but instead of throwing them back, use them to build a strong foundation for success.  In Jesus's parable of servants who wisely invested what they had been entrusted with, he commends those who were faithful with little or much.  He did not commend the one who did nothing.  So it is with us, God has blessed us with talents and abilities that we should use for Him.  Little is much when God is in it. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2025%3A21&version=NLT (Matthew 25:21) “The master was full of praise.  ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant.  You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities.  Let's celebrate together!' As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1849 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are available at Wisdom-Trek.com.  I encourage you to subscribe to Wisdom-Trek on your favorite podcast player so that each day's trek will be downloaded automatically.  If you would also like to receive our weekly newsletter called ‘Wisdom Notes,' please email me at guthrie@wisdom-trek.com. Mainstream Media is Dying, the Explosion of the World Wide Web, Big Tech Censorship Failing, and Other Good News

Mainstream media is dying, it's history, some of my personal news journey, and the World Wide Web....tune in to hear the story.CNN is crashing, big tech platforms are trying to cancel popular voices, the mainstream media is trying to sensor anything that is not leftist, and is freedom of speech being threatened in America? In this podcast I cover a sweeping history of the leftist news in our country, and some of my personal news journey of perceptions in this podcast. When I was a girl in the 60's and 70's, my parents had the TV on regularly every night for the 6 o' clock news with Walter Cronkite. He was the font of all knowledge and we sat dutifully in front of our TV set every night watching this man spout the daily news and what at that time we thought was the facts and truth of the day.No one question what he said, and we ran on the assumption that what he was telling others with based on fact and truth. Communication was slow, compared to today and unless we read it in the newspaper that we could buy each day in the new stands, or was delivered by the paper boy by being flung into our driveways, or watch it on TV each night at 6 PM, we really didn't know what was going on in the world. There was no way to find out what was going on in the mid-morning or midday or afternoon, we had to wait until the 5 o'clock local news and the 6 PM national news to hear from Walter Cronkite,  David Brinkley and others what we were going to know about the nation in the world. ABC, NBC, and CBS were our 3 main TV choices. Then in 2007 the iPhone really exploded on the scene. This was the first year of the iPhone really becoming huge, accessible to every person and now the iPhone was so much more than a phone. In the mid to late 2000s, 2011, 2012, there was a huge explosion of bloggers, news and opinion websites, and alternative news sources that you could read and subscribe to. At that time, many of us began to realize that the mainstream media of the 60s and 70s and 80s was really the leftist machine that pumped into America an ideological anti- Constitutional viewpoint, driving us to the left, driving us away from the Constitution, and driving us toward Socialism and communism. Few of us realized this because we relied on the 6 o'clock news from ABC, NBC, and CBS. We didn't realize we were being misled over a series of decades, and fed a load of socialist and communist ideologies because we had nothing else to compare it to. We also learned that Walter Cronkite was a one-worlder and said the smartest president he ever met was Jimmy Carter. When the World Wide Web was ushered in in the 2000s, many people didn't like it because along with that came a lot of garbage, trivia, and mind numbing, time wasting stuff to look at,  but what also came with the World Wide Web is the ability to find the truth, and for the average American with a microphone to say the truth. In the last couple months it's been in the news that CNN executives have been asked to leave and have disappeared from the landscape of media because of indiscretions in their lives. This is no surprise. For when you spend a lifetime lying to the people, deceiving the people, and coercing the people to try and get them to believe that what they're saying is the truth but is really just a propaganda machine for the socialist left, these sins will eventually find you out. And so the mainstream media is dying, because there are thousands of reputable, truth telling people and news groups, both using the written word on the Internet and the spoken word through videos & podcasts on many platforms. We have the choice now to tune our ears to the truth, and to focus our eyes on what is right. "....in all your getting, get understanding." Proverbs 4:7

Young journalist David Brinkley first came to Washington, D.C. in 1943, just as World War II was transforming the nation's capital. The sleepy Southern town that had been home to a small federal government suddenly burgeoned into a major city filled with office buildings, bureaucracy, lobbyists, and lots of money. After the wa, in 1956, NBC paired Brinkley with Chet Huntley to co-anchor their nightly news. After leaving NBC in the 1970s, Brinkley joined ABC, where he was the founding host of the Sunday morning show “This Week.” He retired in 1997. It was in the late 1980s that Brinkley wrote his first book, on account of the War years called Washington Goes to War. It became a major bestseller. And that's when I met him.

Mondale Robinson, who currently serves as our Principal. He is the National Political Director for Democracy for America, Political Contributor for The Village Celebration where he has political and cultural columns and is a regular on their syndicated radio show. Mondale is also a Political Consultant. Born one of 13 in rural North Carolina, W. Mondale grew up with a front-row seat to obstacles that kept and keeps Black people from voting. With this knowledge and his veteran campaign experience, he created a voter engagement program that would increase Black people's participation in the electoral process (BMEP Additory Approach(C)). The program was designed with a special focus on Black men, who are so often labeled as low information and sporadic voters. The program has been a success in the 13 states where it has been implemented (VA, NC, SC, GA, MS, FL, AL, TX, AR, OH, IN, NY, and NJ). Mondale has been a lifelong advocate for the expansion of democracy and the protection of voting rights. He has worked on more than 125 campaigns''across all levels of government''in the United States, and leading roles internationally. Why W. Mondale Robinson Founded the Black Male Voter Project Sat, 19 Sep 2020 19:54 W. Mondale Robinson (center) at a 2019 'Brothas Be Voting' roundtable in Atlanta. W. Mondale Robinson When I was a kid, I used to watch my father do amazing things for people all the time'--he'd fix roofs, lay drywall, pour cement for entire driveways. We were extremely poor, and I could never understand why. I thought: My dad is an anomaly. How can you be so great as a person and still suffer from poverty? As I grew older, I realized my dad was not an anomaly. Most Black men his age were similarly situated but were crippled in some way: My dad, for instance, earned a felony when he was a young boy for defending his mother against white supremacy. Knowing that his struggles were all too common for Black men and watching America snuff out his greatness were my marching orders and the reason I fight for the betterment of my community. I wound up doing campaign work for a long time, and one thing I noticed right away was that most of the people who determine what's said about politics generally, but progressive politics more specifically, are white men. The messaging they convey doesn't speak to my lived experience as a Black man. It's not motivating to me or to the brothas I know'--uncles, cousins, friends, men like my father. It is well-known that voting is a habit that's formed when resources are spent on it, and Black men aren't a priority when it comes to spending money on elections. That was the genesis of the Black Male Voter Project. Our goal isn't just to make voters out of Black men but to foster this idea of voting on issues that are important to us. We don't outright support candidates; we support issues important to Black men. We're seeking to combat the narrative that Black men are apathetic toward politics. Illustration of W. Mondale Robinson, founder of the Black Male Voter Project. Arrington Porter Being a Black man in America is a political statement, and it is impossible to watch politics from my body when the result of so much of the politics of this country has been the subjugation of me and folks who look like me. You can't discount the impact that's had on the mental health of Black men, either, and yet mental health is not considered part of the fight for revolution as it pertains to white supremacy. Imagine what hundreds of years of slavery have done to the psyche and the soul and the makeup of Black bodies in this country. There's a direct correlation between voting and people's health, especially for Black men. We know we're overrepresented in the prison population, which means we are less likely to have voting rights. A Florida prison system did a study a few years back, and they found that people with restored voting rights were less likely to go back to prison. Every time that I'm silent about inequality, I think about my mother, who would pretend to laugh'--to lessen the impact'--when she would tell me stories about being sprayed with a fire hose when she was nine years old for no reason other than being downtown after dark. She couldn't run and hide because she also had groceries for her siblings in her arms, and so she had to pick up the groceries while being sprayed. The white man who did it was still in elected office as the fire chief when I was growing up. Whenever I'm silent, I feel as though I'm selling my mother out. How we define success with our organization, in the end, is more complex than simply getting more Black men to vote. We're building long-term relationships. We hold focus groups called Brothas Be Voting and populate the room with brothas who don't normally participate in politics, people from the street and from underground economies, so we can hear what the barriers are. That way, we can work to remove them and help Black men start believing in the electoral process again. It was early October, 1976, the month before the map was to debut'--live'--on election night. At the urging of anchor John Chancellor, NBC had constructed the behemoth map to illustrate, in vivid blue and red, which states supported Republican incumbent Gerald Ford and which backed Democratic challenger Jimmy Carter. The test run didn't go well. Although the map was buttressed by a sturdy wood frame, the front of each state was plastic. ''There were thousands of bulbs,'' recalled Roy Wetzel, then the newly minted general manager of NBC's election unit. ''The thing started to melt when we turned all the lights on. We then had to bring in gigantic interior air conditioning and fans to put behind the thing to cool it.'' That solved the problem. And when election results flowed in Tuesday night, Nov. 2, Studio 8-H at 30 Rockefeller Center lit up. Light bulbs on each state changed from undecided white to Republican blue and Democratic red. NBC declared Carter the winner at 3:30 a.m. EST, when Mississippi turned red. That's right: In the beginning, blue was red and red was blue and they changed back and forth from election to election and network to network in what appears, in hindsight, to be a flight of whimsy. The notion that there were ''red states'' and ''blue states'''--and that the former were Republican and the latter Democratic'--wasn't cemented on the national psyche until the year 2000. Chalk up another one to Bush v. Gore. Not only did it give us ''hanging chads'' and a crash course in the Electoral College, not only did it lead to a controversial Supreme Court ruling and a heightened level of polarization that has intensified ever since, the Election That Wouldn't End gave us a new political shorthand. Twelve years later, in the final days of a presidential race deemed too close to call, we know this much about election night Nov. 6: The West Coast, the Northeast and much of the upper Midwest will be bathed in blue. With some notable exceptions, the geographic center of the country will be awash in red. So will the South. And ultimately, it is a handful of states'--which will start the evening in shades of neutral and shift, one by one, to red or blue'--that will determine who wins. If enough of those swing states turn blue, President Barack Obama remains in the White House four more years. If enough become red, Gov. Mitt Romney moves in January 20, 2013. For now, they are considered ''purple.'' Here's something else we know: All the maps'--on TV stations and Web sites election night and in newspapers the next morning'--will look alike. We won't have to switch our thinking as we switch channels, wondering which candidate is blue and which is red. Before the epic election of 2000, there was no uniformity in the maps that television stations, newspapers or magazines used to illustrate presidential elections. Pretty much everyone embraced red and blue, but which color represented which party varied, sometimes by organization, sometimes by election cycle. There are theories, some likely, some just plain weird, to explain the shifting palette. ''For years, both parties would do red and blue maps, but they always made the other guys red,'' said Chuck Todd, political director and chief White House correspondent for NBC News. ''During the Cold War, who wanted to be red?'' Indeed, prior to the breakup of the Soviet Union little more than two decades ago, ''red was a term of derision,'' noted Mitchell Stephens, a New York University professor of journalism and author of A History of News. ''There's a movie named Reds, '' he said. ''You'd see red in tabloid headlines, particularly in right wing tabloids like the Daily Mirror in New York and the New York Daily News.'' In 1972, CBS News split the country into regions and used a color-coded map, with blue for Republicans and red for Democrats. (YouTube) In 1976, ABC News used this color-scheme for the presidential election. (YouTube) This 1980 map from NBC News shows states for Ronald Reagan in blue, Jimmy Carter in red, and uncalled in yellow. (YouTube) For years, NBC News used blue to indicate Republican states and red to indicate Democratic states. Shown here is a screen grab from the 1984 election (YouTube) A still from CBS News' coverage of the 1988 presidential election. White indicated states where ballots had closed, but had not been declared for one candidate or another. (YouTube) By 2000, NBC News had joined their colleagues in using the current red/blue scheme. At this point in the evening, Vice President Gore had been declared the winner in Florida. This, of course, would not be the case by the following morning. (YouTube)Perhaps the stigma of red in those days explains why some networks changed colors'-- in what appeared to be random fashion'--over the years. Kevin Drum of the Washington Monthly wrote in 2004 that the networks alternated colors based on the party of the White House incumbent, but YouTube reveals that to be a myth. Still, there were reversals and deviations. In 1976, when NBC debuted its mammoth electronic map, ABC News employed a small, rudimentary version that used yellow for Ford, blue for Carter and red for states in which votes had yet to be tallied. In 1980, NBC once again used red for Carter and blue for the Republican challenger, Ronald Reagan, and CBS followed suit. But ABC flipped the colors and promised to use orange for states won by John Anderson, the third-party candidate who received 6.6% of the popular vote. (Anderson carried no states, and orange seems to have gone by the wayside.) Four years later, ABC and CBS used red for Republicans and blue for Democrats, but the combination wouldn't stick for another 16 years. During the four presidential elections Wetzel oversaw for NBC, from 1976 through 1988, the network never switched colors. Republicans were cool blue, Democrats hot red. The reasoning was simple, he said: Great Britain. ''Without giving it a second thought, we said blue for conservatives, because that's what the parliamentary system in London is, red for the more liberal party. And that settled it. We just did it,'' said Wetzel, now retired. Forget all that communist red stuff, he said. ''It didn't occur to us. When I first heard it, I thought, 'Oh, that's really silly.' '' When ABC produced its first large electronic map in 1980, it used red for Republicans and blue for Democrats, while CBS did the reverse, according to Wetzel. NBC stuck with its original color scheme, prompting anchor David Brinkley to say that Reagan's victory looked like ''a suburban swimming pool.'' Newspapers, in those days, were largely black and white. But two days after voters went to the polls in 2000, both the New York Times and USA Today published their first color-coded, county-by-county maps detailing the showdown between Al Gore and George W. Bush. Both papers used red for the Republican Bush, blue for the Democrat Gore. Why? ''I just decided red begins with 'r,' Republican begins with 'r.' It was a more natural association,'' said Archie Tse, senior graphics editor for the Times. ''There wasn't much discussion about it.'' Paul Overberg, a database editor who designed the map for USA Today, said he was following a trend: ''The reason I did it was because everybody was already doing it that way at that point.'' And everybody had to continue doing it for a long time. The 2000 election dragged on until mid-December, until the Supreme Court declared Bush the victor. For weeks, the maps were ubiquitous. Perhaps that's why the 2000 colors stuck. Along with images of Florida elections officials eyeballing tiny ballot chads, the maps were there constantly, reminding us of the vast, nearly even divide between, well, red and blue voters. From an aesthetic standpoint, Overberg said, the current color scheme fits with the political landscape. Republicans typically dominate in larger, less populated states in the Plains and Mountain West, meaning the center of the United States is very red. ''If it had been flipped, the map would have been too dark,'' he said. ''The blue would have been swamping the red. Red is a lighter color.'' But not everyone liked the shift. Republican operative Clark Bensen wrote an analysis in 2004 titled ''RED STATE BLUES: Did I Miss That Memo?'' ''There are two general reasons why blue for Republican and Red for Democrat make the most sense: connotation and practice,'' Bensen wrote. ''First, there has been a generally understood meaning to the two colors inasmuch as they relate to politics. That is, the cooler color blue more closely represented the rational thinker and cold-hearted and the hotter red more closely represented the passionate and hot-blooded. This would translate into blue for Republicans and red for Democrats. Put another way, red was also the color most associated with socialism and the party of the Democrats was clearly the more socialistic of the two major parties. ''The second reason why blue for Republicans makes sense is that traditional political mapmakers have used blue for the modern-day Republicans, and the Federalists before that, throughout the 20th century. Perhaps this was a holdover from the days of the Civil War when the predominantly Republican North was 'Blue'.'' At this point'--three presidential elections after Bush v. Gore'--the color arrangement seems unlikely to reverse any time soon. Not only have ''red states'' and ''blue states'' entered the lexicon, partisans on both sides have taken ownership of them. For instance, RedState is a conservative blog; Blue State Digital, which grew out of Democrat Howard Dean's 2004 presidential campaign, helps candidates and organizations use technology to raise money, advocate their positions and connect with constituents. In 2008, a Republican and a Democrat even joined forces to create Purple Strategies, a bipartisan public affairs firm. Sara Quinn, a visual journalist now at the Poynter Institute in Florida, said she sees no particular advantage to either color. ''Red is usually very warm and it comes forward to the eye. Blue tends to be a recessive color, but a calming color,'' she said. Not that anyone thought of those things when assigning colors in 2000. Not that they think about it at all today. ''After that election the colors became part of the national discourse,'' said Tse. ''You couldn't do it any other way.'' The Rosy or Rose Cross - Occult Symbols Sat, 19 Sep 2020 18:45 The Rose Cross is associated with a number of different schools of thought, including that of the Golden Dawn, Thelema, the OTO, and the Rosicrucians (also known as the Order of the Rose Cross). Each group offers somewhat different interpretations of the symbol. This should not be surprising as magical, occult and esoteric symbols are frequently used to communicate ideas more complex than is possible to express in speech. Christian Elements Users of the Rose Cross today tend to downplay the Christian elements to it, even though the magical systems used by such people are generally Judeo-Christian in origin. The cross, therefore, has other meanings here besides being the instrument of Christ's execution. Despite this, the presence of the letters INRI, which is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase Iesvs Nazarens Rex Ivdaeorym, meaning "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews," cannot escape Christian interpretation. According to the Christian Bible, this phrase was inscribed on the cross where Jesus was executed. In addition, the cross is often viewed by occultists as a symbol of immortality, sacrifice, and death. Through Jesus's sacrifice and death on the cross, humanity has a chance at eternal life with God. The Cross Cross-shaped objects are commonly used in occultism too represent the four physical elements. Here each arm is colored to represent one element: yellow, blue, black and red to represent air, water, earth, and fire. These colors are also repeated on the bottom portion of the cross. The white on the upper portion of the bottom arm represents the spirit, the fifth element. The cross can also represent dualism, two forces going in conflicting directions yet uniting at a central point. The union of rose and cross is also a generative symbol, the union of a male and female. Finally, the cross's proportions are made up of six squares: one for each arm, an extra one for the lower arm, and the center. A cross of six squares can be folded into a cube. The Rose The rose has three tiers of petals. The first tier, of three petals, represents the three basic alchemical elements: salt, mercury, and sulfur. The tier of seven petals represents the seven Classical planets (The Sun and Moon are considered planets here, with the term ''planets'' indicating the seven bodies that appear to circle the earth independently of the star field, which moves as a single unit). The tier of twelve represents the astrological zodiac. Each of the twenty-two petals bears one of the twenty-two letters in the Hebrew alphabet and also represents the twenty-two paths on the Tree of Life. The rose itself has a myriad assortment of additional meanings associated with it: It is at once a symbol of purity and a symbol of passion, heavenly perfection and earthly passion; virginity and fertility; death and life. The rose is the flower of the goddess Venus but also the blood of Adonis and of Christ. It is a symbol of transmutation - that of taking food from the earth and transmuting it into the beautiful fragrant rose. The rose garden is a symbol of Paradise. It is the place of the mystic marriage. In ancient Rome, roses were grown in the funerary gardens to symbolize resurrection. The thorns have represented suffering and sacrifice as well as the sins of the Fall from Paradise. ("A Brief Study of The Rose Cross Symbol," no longer online)Inside the large rose is a smaller cross bearing another rose. This second rose is depicted with five petals. Five is the number of the physical senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell, and it is also the number of man's extremities: two arms, two legs, and the head. Thus, the rose represents humanity and physical existence. The Pentagrams A pentagram is displayed at the end of each arm of the cross. Each of these pentagrams bears symbols of the five elements: a wheel for spirit, a bird's head for air, the zodiac sign for Leo, which is a fire sign, the zodiac symbol for Taurus, which is an earth sign, and the zodiac symbol for Aquarius, which is a water sign. They are arranged so that when tracing the pentagram you can progress from the most physical to the most spiritual: earth, water, air, fire, spirit. The Three Symbols at the End of Each Arm The three symbols repeated at the end of all four arms stand for salt, mercury, and sulfur, which are the three basic alchemical elements from which all other substances derive. The three symbols are repeated on each of the four arms of the cross, numbering a total of twelve. Twelve is the number of the zodiac, comprised of twelve symbols that circle the heavens throughout the year. The Hexagram Hexagrams commonly represent the union of opposites. It is composed of two identical triangles, one pointing up and one pointing down. The point-up triangle can represent ascending toward the spiritual, while the point-down triangle can stand for the divine spirit descending to the physical realm. The Symbols Around and in The Hexagram The symbols in and around the hexagram represent the seven Classical planets. The symbol for the Sun is in the center. The sun is generally the most important planet in Western occultism. Without the Sun, our planet would be lifeless. It is also commonly connected with the light of divine wisdom and the purification properties of fire, and was sometimes considered the visual manifestation of God's will in the universe. On the outside of the hexagrams are the symbols for Saturn, Jupiter, Venus, the Moon, Mercury, and Mars (clockwise from top). Western occult thought generally considers the planets in the farthest orbits from the Earth in an earth-centric model) to be the most spiritual, because they are the furthest from the physicality of the Earth. Thus, the top three planets are Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, while the bottom three are Mercury, Venus and the Moon. Music in this Episode Intro: Mobb Deep - G.O.D. Music in this Episode Intro: Mobb Deep - G.O.D. does womanhood look like biblically at home?  Here is Nancy Leigh DeMoss. Nancy: Scripture talks about a woman as reverencing her husband, honoring him, lifting him up; a woman who loves her husband, loves her children.  Proverbs speaks of the importance of a woman having the quality of discretion.  I think so many of these come back to the fact that God made us, as women, to be responders and to allow the men to be the initiators that God created them to be. Bob: This is FamilyLife Today for Tuesday, June 17th.  Our host is the president of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.  What are the core character qualities that define biblical womanhood?  We'll talk about that today, stay tuned. And welcome to FamilyLife Today, thanks for joining us on the Tuesday edition.  I remember when I was growing up, back then the "CBS Evening News" was hosted by Walter Cronkite – remember – Walter Cronkite, and over on NBC it was Chet Huntley and David Brinkley, and I don't remember who was on ABC and neither does anybody else because nobody was even watching ABC.  And so the executives over at ABC, I think it was Fred Silverman at the time, decided he was going to have two anchors, kind of like Huntley-Brinkley.  One of them was going to be Harry Reasoner, and the other Barbara Walters.  And for the first time, America was going to be asked to get their evening news from a woman.  There was a lot of discussion – was America ready to have a woman as a nightly news anchor?   And, you know, we look at that now from the perspective of more than 30 years, and it's almost laughable.  I heard somebody the other day saying that most of the cable news anchors are women today, and we don't think anything of it.  And yet back then we were asking a lot of questions about what is the essence of manhood, what is the essence of womanhood?  And, frankly, even though we'd look back at having a female news anchor being revolutionary, and we'd laugh about that today, I still think there is a lot of confusion in our culture today about what's at the essence of manhood, and what's at the essence of womanhood? Dennis: And because of the cultural shift, there has been a shift in the Christian community.  Unfortunately, we have lost our biblical moorings, our anchor point in the Scripture, and I fear that we're raising a generation of daughters and, for that matter, sons, who do not know what it means to be a woman or to be a man.   And that's why we're committing these broadcasts just to helping women truly have a good grasp of what it means, biblically speaking, to be a woman.  And with us in the studio to help us here on a second day is Nancy Leigh DeMoss – Nancy, welcome back. Nancy: Thank you. Dennis: Nancy has spoken to women's groups for more than 20 years, and I think it's fair to say, Nancy, that this is a life message for you – defining what it means and painting a portrait of femininity, is that right? Nancy: Well, God certainly has given me a heart to glorify Him, as a woman, and that means that there are issues that have to be wrestled with. Bob: Yes, and you spend time wrestling with this issues on your daily radio program, "Revive Our Hearts," which many of our listeners are familiar with because it's heard on some of the stations that also carry FamilyLife Today.  You have also written a number of books including a bestselling book called "Lies Women Believe."  There is a new book out called "Lies Young Women Believe."  You've written a study guide called "Seeking Him," and our listeners may not know that you're going to be hosting a national conference in Chicago coming up in October.   It's called True Woman '08, and you're going to be speaking there along with Joni Eareckson Tada and Janet Parshall and, Dennis, your wife, Barbara is going to be there, Karen Loritts is going to be speaking as well – Pastor John Piper is going to be speaking to the ladies, and there is already a lot of excitement about this conference.  In fact, it's starting to fill up.  So if our listeners are interested in attending the True Woman '08 conference, they should go to our website, FamilyLife.com, and click where it says "Today's Broadcast" on the right side of the screen, and they'll find a link to the True Woman website, and they can get registered online and plan to attend the conference. Let me ask you about this issue of masculinity and femininity.  Does the Bible give us insight into why God created us differently?  Why He created us male and female? Nancy: Well, actually, God answers that question for us in His Word, thankfully.  And we find, if we go back to the Genesis record, that God made the man first, God created the man in His image, unlike all that had preceded man, unlike the animals or the plants or the seas, the waters.  God looked at the man and said, "It's not good."  It's not good that the man should be alone.   And then it is interesting to me that God sent Adam on a little hunt to find, if he could, a completer for himself.  Adam failed in that attempt.  There was no completer for him, and then I think Adam realized that God was the one who had to provide his completion.  God was the one who had to provide that which would complement him.  And then, as we know, God put the man to sleep … Bob: And I don't know this, but I bet he snored like crazy during that nap. Nancy: Probably, probably. Bob: Just guessing on that. Dennis: You think? Bob: I just am guessing he was in a deep sleep and was sawing some mean logs. Nancy: Isn't snoring the result of the Fall? Bob: Well, that's a good question. Dennis: That's a great question.  I'm more certain of this – that when God came walking up with the answer to the question, "Why am I incomplete?"  He woke up at that point, didn't he? Nancy: He did, and the thing that's helpful for us, as women, to understand is that God made us for the man.  So much of the teaching in our generation has been that the woman was is to be independent of the man; that her identity is not to be tied into that of the man.  But as we go back to the manual of life that we have here in God's Word, the manual that tells us how life can best function, we find that God made woman for the man.  He made her from the man.  They are not independent.  They are together created to reflect the image of God.  God gave her to the man as his helper.  God is saying, "The man needs one to help him in this task of exercising dominion over the earth, and the woman is the one that I have made to be able perfectly to help him fulfill that task. Bob: And in Genesis God immediately gives that a context of marriage, but you're saying that even a single woman has been created to be a helper to man? Nancy: Well, as we go into the New Testament, which helps us to understand more of the Old Testament record we get into 1 Corinthians, chapter 11, for example, that tells us that the woman was made for the man.  So obviously that relates to the context of marriage.  But I believe that God made us as women – me as a single woman – to have a role of being a helper, to be a cheerleader, an encourager, one who helps God's men fulfill their role in life. Bob: You know, you can almost hear a woman kind of flinching as you offer that definition, because she is saying, "That's it?  I'm a cheerleader?  I stand on the sidelines while men play the game, and I cheer them on, and I run the water in during the water break, and I pat them on the back, and then I got back to the sidelines and let them play?  That doesn't sound like God to me." Dennis: Yes, and there would be those add their voices, Nancy, who would say isn't being a helper a demeaning term?  Aren't you unnecessarily subjugating me to this sinful, selfish man and, after all, that was before man sinned. Nancy: The New Testament tells us that men and women, husband and wife, are heirs together of the grace of life, and that a man's greatest fulfillment and a woman's greatest fulfillment in life will come through complementing each other, not competing with each other, but being willing to complete each other.  This is not a secondary role – the woman, as much as the man, was created in the image of God.  The woman, as much as the man, is a recipient of the grace of God and, by the way, that means for both sinners in need of the grace of God.   I look at the New Testament record in Matthew, chapter 1, of the genealogy of our Lord Jesus and included in that record are five women, which would have been unusual for a Jewish audience to include women in the genealogical listing – five women each of whom, from the Jewish standpoint, had a strike or a mark against her either because of an immoral background or a foreign background or even, in the case of Mary, the mother of Jesus, having a child without having a husband.   In that passage, I believe God even shows us this pattern that women, like men, are heirs of the grace of life – participants, full participants together in the Gospel and the redemptive plan of God here on this earth. Dennis: Nancy, you're single, and thus you're not a mom, but if you were a mom, and you had three daughters like mine, all of them teenagers.  How would you be purposeful and intentional about developing and rearing a daughter to develop her femininity in relationship to men?  There's a good chance she may be single.   Nancy: You see, whether single or married, I believe God created all of us, as women, to be bearers of life.  Not only physiologically are we designed – men cannot have babies – women are physiologically designed to be able to have babies, but I think that is a picture of a deeper, inner truth that God made us, as women, to be bearers and nurturers of life.  As a single woman, one of my roles and responsibilities in ministry is to give spiritual life, to nurture spiritual life, in the lives of other young women. And you have, Dennis, speaking of your daughters, in your wife, a woman who is a model to those daughters of what it means to be a supporter, an encourager, a cheerleader, and she's modeling for your daughters the blessing of establishing that as a priority – the building of a home. Bob: Boy, that is so key, Dennis, because what Nancy is saying is that before a mom can ever teacher her daughter what it means to be a woman, a mom has to understand and embrace it for herself, model it for her daughters, or the instruction is not going to make any sense.  And we've seen just the opposite occur.  We've seen women in the culture embracing the cultural definition of femininity and wanting to raise daughters who fulfill a more masculine design for life. Dennis: Yes, and as a result of taking on the water of the culture, their own boats are sinking, because they are confused, as women, as to what is a woman, and she can't pass it on to her daughters or to her sons.  And, by the way, I think it's very important that our sons not only know what biblical masculinity is from mothers and fathers, but that they also know what it means to be a woman, as well, so that when they see a woman, they know what a true woman is.  They don't define a woman around the exterior, which, over in 1 Peter, chapter 3, Peter warns a woman about merely placing an emphasis on the exterior.  Our sons need to be discerning about what a true woman is and what a true woman is to become. Nancy: Of course, the whole purpose of Proverbs 31 is that it was written to a king to tell him what qualities he ought to look for in a woman; what were the womanly qualities, the qualities of a woman who fears the Lord – what would she look like and how should he choose a wife? Dennis: I think a key question for every mom and, for that matter, every woman, whether you're single or married or whether you even have children – but put yourself in this position – if your daughter came to you and asked you, "Mommy, what does it mean to be a woman and not a man?"  And, Nancy, I'm going to put that question to you right now – what if you had a daughter, and she asked you that question?  How would you answer her? Nancy: You know, Dennis, since I was a teenage girl, I have searched the Scriptures, the Word of God, and also as I've talked with literally thousands of women around the world, come to see if there are certain qualities, which, when you put them together, form a portrait of God's kind of woman.  We've talked about some of those already – a woman as a helper, as an encourager, as a cheerleader, a woman distinctively in a role as a servant, a servant of God and of God's men.  We've talked about a woman as a nurturer, a mother, a bearer of life.  Scripture talks about a woman as a teacher, a teacher of her children, a teacher of younger women. And then we read in the New Testament that there are specific qualities that God considers precious and beautiful in a woman.  You talked about how it's not just the outward beauty that a woman is to focus on, but 1 Peter 3 speaks of her having the internal beauty and radiance of a spirit that is gentle, it is meek, it is quiet, a spirit that trusts in God.  Scripture talks about a woman as having a submissive spirit, being willing to come under the covering and the protection of God-ordained authority. Scripture talks about a woman who fears the Lord in Proverbs 31, is a woman who will be praised.  So there's the dimension of her personal walk with God.  There are a number of passages in Scripture that speak of women in the role of concerned praying women, and how a culture that has been taken over with secularism needs women who are weeping, burdened, praying women – how we need that in our day.  Scripture talks about a woman as reverencing her husband, honoring him, lifting him up; a woman who loves her husband, loves her children.  In addition, there are numerous passages in Scripture that speak of a woman being modest, chaste, pure in her speech, in her behavior, in her clothing.  Proverbs speaks of the importance of a woman having the quality of discretion.   I think so many of these come back to the fact that God made us, as women, to be responders and to allow the men to be the initiators that God created them to be. Bob: I want to ask you about that, but there are some women who just heard that portrait, that description, and they said to themselves, "Yuck, I don't like that.  That's not who I feel like, I'm not sure that's who I want to be." Dennis: And they are also saying, "I question whether that's the way God made me.  He didn't make me to be a responder." Nancy: Not too long ago, I had the privilege of talking with two different women on the same day who are both dear friends.  The one woman is a young mother who came and expressed to me that she was experiencing some depression, some frustration in her life, there were some issues that were unresolved between herself and her husband.  She was wrestling with the feeling that she did not feel motivated or successful in her role as a mother, so she was wanting to take on a career outside of her family, and she and her husband were wrestling through some of these issues. And she said to me – "What if my husband" – now, she has a godly husband – she said, "What if my husband wants me to be barefoot, pregnant, and in the kitchen for the rest of my life?"  It wasn't long after that conversation that I had another conversation with another woman who is a dear friend.  She's the wife of a pastor, and I saw, in this woman and older woman who has devoted her life to being a helper, a completer, a responder to her husband.  Her children are now grown, she has taught her children to love their husbands, to love their own children, and I saw in this older woman, a woman who is deeply at peace, who is radiant, who is fulfilled, a woman whose husband is nuts about her, because Proverbs 31 says that a woman who fears the Lord will be praised.  What woman could ask for more than that Proverbs 31 woman has, and that is children who call her blessed, a husband who praises her publicly – this is deep in our hearts, as women, what we desire and what we were made for. Dennis: And, you know, Nancy, as you were going through your list and talking about all this, I thought "How refreshing.  What a clear, refreshing voice in a culture that, again, is trying to define what it means to be a woman without reference to what the Scriptures say."  Every one of these in your list are all biblically based, and what a great portrait to hang in our living rooms for our daughters to attain to and to seek to become. I thought of, as you were talking about being modest, chaste, and pure, how boys are never challenged to be modest, chaste – now they are called to be moral.  They are called to be in control of their own sexual passions, but this is a different set of words than you would use for a boy who is being called to become a man. And a young lady who is growing up, having had this portrait lived out in front of her by her mom and then having had that portrait painted from the Scriptures by both of her parents – think of the contentment, the possibilities of her life and what she can mean to a young man, to a family, to another generation of children.  This is where Christianity becomes uniquely powerful. Bob: And, ultimately, to the woman who sees this portrait and goes, "I don't know that I like it; I'm not sure God made me this way."  The issue is not what she feels like.  The issue is whether she will come under the authority of the Word of God and be the kind of woman that God's Word says He has made women to be. Nancy: I think, equally, a man could look at the portrait of biblical manhood in the Scripture and think, "I don't think God made me for leadership.  I don't think God made me for initiative."  But joy and fulfillment in life come from saying, "Yes, Lord." Dennis: And, you know, there are women listening to this broadcast right now who are not married to godly men, they're not married to a pastor, and yet you can take this portrait that you've painted here, this is still true regardless of whether they are married to a man who is a godly man.  This is still biblical femininity.  This is what God says is the picture of what it means to be a woman, regardless of your circumstances.  There is hope there, isn't there? Nancy: There is, and I don't think that the average woman has ever begun to fathom the extent of the influence that her life, when she surrenders to the Lordship of Christ and His design, the influence that her life will have on her husband and on other men around her.  We, as women, have profound influence on the attitudes, the values, the lifestyles of the men around us whether or not we choose to embrace God's pattern for our lives. Dennis: And, Nancy, hanging in the gallery of my own heart is the picture of my mom who, although she didn't have – well, the resources that we've had today and the great teachers like you are, to be able to instruct her about what it meant to be a woman, she did get in the Scriptures, and she was a helper, a cheerleader, a nurturer, a bearer of life.  She was modest and chaste and was a woman who feared the Lord and had a meek and quiet spirit, teachable, and was profoundly influential – just exactly what you are talking about. Bob: But, you know, if we had called your mom back before she went home to be with the Lord, and we had said to her, "Do you think you're an influential woman?"  She would have laughed at that idea, and I think there are a lot of women who hear us talk about these ideas, and they look at their own lives, and they say, "I'm not influencing – okay, maybe I'm having some influence on my children, but I don't feel like a woman of influence.  I don't feel like I'm making a big difference in anybody's life."  And that's an issue, Nancy, that you've addressed in the book that you wrote called "Lies Women Believe," which has gone on to be a bestselling book.   And you've also addressed it in the new book that you and Dana Gresh have written together called "Lies Young Women Believe," because, as you've noted many times, Dennis, there are a lot of young women who are growing up, not with an eye toward home, but with an eye toward the marketplace as the center of influence for our culture.  We've got copies of the books that Nancy has written in our FamilyLife Resource Center, including the booklet called  "A Biblical Portrait of Womanhood" that addresses many of the themes we're talking about this week.  You can go to our website, which is FamilyLife.com and if you click the right side of the screen where it says "Today's Broadcast," you can get more information about the resources that Nancy has written and if you have not read "Lies Women Believe," let me encourage you to get a copy of that book and read through it.  Again, the website is FamilyLife.com, and you need to click on the right side of the screen on the home page where it says "Today's Broadcast."   And there is also information available there about the upcoming conference in Chicago, the True Woman '08 conference.  It's October 8th through the 11th, and it's a national conference.  Women from all over the country are going to be coming in to hear a great variety of speakers including Joni Eareckson Tada, Pastor John Piper, Nancy is going to be speaking, your wife, Barbara, is going to be speaking, Dennis, and Keith and Kristyn Getty are going to be there to help lead the worship.  It's going to be a wonderful two-and-a-half-day event, and if our listeners are interested, they can find out more on our website at FamilyLife.com, and they can register by clicking through to the True Woman website. Or if it's easier for you to get more information or request these resources by calling us, the toll-free number is 1-800-FLTODAY, that's 1-800-358-6329, 1-800-F-as-in-family, L-as-in-life, and then the word TODAY.  While women are wrestling with this subject of what it means to be a woman according to the Scriptures, men have been wrestling for some time with the same thing from our perspective – what does it mean to be a man, to be God's man?  And our friend, Pastor Stu Weber, who is a former Army Ranger and a Green Beret has a wonderful message on this subject that we are making available to listeners this month. When you support the ministry of FamilyLife Today with a donation of any amount, it's a message called "Applied Masculinity," and you can request a copy when you make a donation either online or by calling 1-800-FLTODAY.  Because FamilyLife Today is listener-supported, those donations are essential for us to continue on this station and on other stations across the country.   If you are making your donation online, you will come to a keycode box on the donation form, and you will need to type the word "Stu" in there, s-t-u, so that we can send you a copy of this CD, or you can call 1-800-FLTODAY, make a donation over the phone and just mention that you'd like a copy of the Stu Weber CD.  We're happy to send it out to you as our way of saying thank you for your financial support of the ministry of FamilyLife Today. Well, tomorrow Nancy Leigh DeMoss is going to be back with us.  We're going to continue to look at what it means to be a woman according to the Scriptures.  I hope you can be with us as well. I want to thank our engineer today, Keith Lynch, and our entire broadcast production team.  On behalf of our host, Dennis Rainey, I'm Bob Lepine.  We'll see you next time for another edition of FamilyLife Today.  FamilyLife Today is a production of FamilyLife of Little Rock, Arkansas – help for today; hope for tomorrow. Adlai Ewing Stevenson II (1900-1965) was an American lawyer, politician, and diplomat. Stevenson graduated from Northwestern University School of Law in 1926, practiced law at Cutting, Moore & Sidley in Chicago, and then got into politics during the Roosevelt administration. He was elected Governor of Illinois, serving from 1949 to 1953, and received the Democratic Party's nomination for president in the 1952 and 1956 elections, but was roundly defeated by Dwight Eisenhower. In 1960, Stevenson lost the Democratic nomination to Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts. After the election, President Kennedy appointed Stevenson the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, a position in which he served until his death from heart failure in 1965.Shortly after Stevenson's death RCA Victor published this LP, titled "The Stevenson Wit: Selections from Famous Speeches, Press Conferences and Off-the-Cuff Remarks." Wisdom-Trek / Creating a Legacy Welcome to Day 910 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom A Firm Foundation – Wisdom Unplugged Thank you for joining us for our five days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is http://wisdom-trek.com (Day 910) of our trek, and it is time for a 3-minute mini-trek called Wisdom Unplugged. Thank you for joining me on this trek called life. This short nugget of wisdom includes an inspirational quote with a little bit of additional content for today's trek. Consider this your vitamin supplement of wisdom for today. So let's jump right in with today's nugget. Today's quote is from David Brinkley, and it is, “A successful person is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at him or her.” A Firm Foundation Success is never easy. If it were not hard enough to succeed based on obstacles that you will face, some obstructions come from other people. Some of these may be family and friends. You will run into people that try to trip you up or discourage you from your trek to success. You will even have some people that will figuratively throw bricks at you. The truly successful person is one who through consistent persistence continues to press forward, regardless of the situations or people that obstruct their way. We need to take our failures and lessons learned to construct a firm foundation that will be able to withstand the buffeting winds of life. Success is personal, and should rarely be equated with monetary success. Success at its very core will be made up of peace of mind and contentment. Success is a place of quiet rest after going through the raging storms that will battle against us at the most inopportune time. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+21:5&version=NLT (Proverbs 21:5) reminds us that, “Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.” We need to realize that success is not made up of only working hard, but enjoying the results of that labor as we are reminded in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+127:2&version=NLT (Psalm 127:2,) “It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones.” True success is built on a firm foundation and also includes a place of quiet rest. That's a wrap for today's Wisdom Unplugged quote. If you would like free access to my database of over 10,000 inspirational quotes, the link is available on the main page of https://wisdom-trek.com/ (Wisdom-Trek.com). As you enjoy these nuggets of wisdom, encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of our Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy. If you would like to listen to any of our past 909 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are available at http://wisdom-trek.com (Wisdom-Trek.com). As we take this trek together, let us always: Live Abundantly (Fully) Love Unconditionally Listen Intentionally Learn Continuously Lend to others Generously Lead with Integrity Leave a Living Legacy Each Day I am Guthrie Chamberlain reminding you to Keep Moving Forward, Enjoy Your Journey, and Create a Great Day Everyday! See you tomorrow for https://wisdom-trek.com/day-911/ (Wisdom Wednesday!)

NYU professor Mitchell Stephens' recent article in “Politico” is headlined “Goodbye Nonpartisan Journalism. And Good Riddance.” Stephens says that “journalism in the United States was born partisan and remained, for much of its history, loud, boisterous and combative. He says that this changed in the 1930s and 40s beginning with influential radio newsman Lowell Thomas who “intuited that the best way to hold [his] large audience was to avoid excessively offending any major political group. He tried to play it, as he put it, ‘down the middle' ... “And Thomas' main successors in the role of national newsmen—David Brinkley, Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw—aimed for somewhere around “the middle” too.

The TVTM loves you, baby. Yes, as a matter of fact, it does. We show that love by giving you a better product, a glossier, more brilliantly sheen-filled and lucid piece of aural entertainment. We increase our game because someone told us that they took our last podcast for a long car drive and made the drive even longer. Hurt, tearful, weepy-hearted but determined, we put our best effort into this one. Well, "best effort." Question Boy (Chronicle political writer Joe Garofoli) channeled Walter Cronkite (and Putin and wonderfully, Existential French Woman) while Adjustin (Justin Beck, producer to the stars) even looked up not one but two area codes (though he also shook off the idea that I should podcast from Los Angeles next week and the week after while I'm down covering the Death March With Cocktails). This 'cast starts with a song (PPage strikes again) and ends with a slam at a boring state (one of 50 you'll just have to guess), then an apology and then some laughs. We find two "lost" e-mails. There's a lot of Walton, who doesn't apologize, there are calls from everywhere, an MP3 about David Brinkley and we begin the arrangements to have a drink with Andrea from Connecticut, (calling from the car again) continuing our promise to buy drinks for any listener outside the Bay Area who stops in San Francisco. We're going to answer all of Andrea's TV questions with care and precision so that she's completely stunned but happy. She'll return to the East Coast and spread the truth I really do know things. Jealous yet? Book your flight! All told, a small slice of awesomeness. "If you're going to listen to just one long and uninformative and pointless podcast this summer, listen to this one." It will indeed be our last podcast for a bit. I'm heading to Los Angeles on Sunday, not back until Aug. 10, where we've tentatively scheduled another one. By then, you'll miss us so much you'll be sending us letters of apology for ever slagging us, either in public or in your private thoughts. We forgive you in advance.

Thanks to QB for dreaming up both a Maxwell Smart voice and also Vladimir Putin and Porno Putin. ("I am going to go to Black Sea resort and pick up whores!") "That's going to need some shower time." Our 99th episode is ripe with stupidity. And we do mean ripe. The onus has fallen on me to do something special for our 100th episode (translation: not bloody likely). We're hoping to do something at the 21st Amendment in San Francisco. Jason has promised a special theme song. But we'd like to caution -- as if you need to be told -- that this may not unfold in a timely manner. Give us a little room to move and scheme and we'll get something done. If all else fails, we'll shelve the 'cast and invite everybody for a mid-day beer.
