Some runners show up. Others shut it down when it counts.Riley Chamberlain is doing both. The BYU junior has become one of the most dangerous closers in the NCAA, helping lead the Cougars to back-to-back national titles in the Distance Medley Relay—including their record-breaking 10:37.58 this season, which shattered both NCAA and BYU records. But Riley's not just a relay weapon. She's been lighting it up solo, too—dropping 8:40.89 in the 3000m at the Husky Classic, the second-fastest time in the NCAA this year, and earning Second-Team All-American honors indoors. With PRs of 4:08 in the 1500, 4:26 in the mile, and that scorching 8:40 in the 3K, Riley is quickly becoming one of the most consistent—and clutch—names on the track.A former California Gatorade XC Athlete of the Year, two-time state champ, and NXN qualifier, Riley was a force back in high school. Now, she's elevating her game on the national stage—racing smart, closing hard, and building a legacy at BYU.In today's conversation, Riley walks me through her recent success in the sport, her ambtions for the future, winning NCAA titles, the culture of BYU, and much more.If you're someone who is up-and-coming and looking to take that next step, this one is for you. Very diverse group of guys today, we have the NXN Champ, NXN runner-up, two high school national record holders, and just a show full of studs. I don't think there needs to be much of an introduction to these guys and if you have been following on Instagram, you know all about this project, so I won't waste anymore of your time, but…Please, wherever you are, in your car, at work, on a run, give this podcast a follow and a five-star review on whatever platform you are listening on. Jean, if you are listening, and I know you are, thank you bro. This one was fun.So, without further delay, please enjoy the high school boys nationals panel
We are joined today by one of the best high school cross country coaches in the country, Kelly Christensen.Coach Christensen leads Niwot High School in Colorado. They recently won the High School Nike Cross Nationals boy's race in December. The team put together one of the best finishes in NXN history, totaling just 70 points, and emerged as the first boy's team to capture the title in Colorado high school history. Coach Christensen became a school counselor and coach at Niwot in Colorado in 2016, after transitioning from a career in construction management. Coach Christensen earned a bachelor's in psychology from Western State College. During his time at Niwot, the Cross Country program has achieved five girl's state championship titles and two boy's state titles. The boys have crowned four individual state champions and one individual runner-up finish as well.Prior to coaching at Niwot, Christensen served as the head cross country and track coach at Palmer Ridge High School from 2014 - 2016 (achieving two boys' track and field titles and a cross country title). In today's conversation, Coach Kelly takes me through his coaching philosophies, his backstory into coaching, how he emphasizes the importance of balance, the story of how his boys won their first-ever NXN title, how he coaches disappointment, and so much more. This conversation was a true blessing and I hope you take the time to listen to it. The last time I had them on the podcast was last February and since then, Sophia has won 3 state titles, Victoria won a national title in the steeplechase, they finished 8th and 12th at NXN, and Victoria is committed to run at Wake Forest University next fall. So, there's a lot to unravel. We discuss what it's like with it being Victoria's final year of high school running and how their sibling relationship is going to change, what it was like for Sophia to win a state title individually, and as a team on both the boys' and girls' side, their NXN experience in the mud, the importance of a mental reset, as well as how they are able to maintain joy in running despite the challenges that the sport brings. THE CHARLIE VAUSE SPECIAL Today's podcast explores the story of the greatest upset in high school cross-country history. Today on the podcast, I had an awesome conversation with Chloe and Hannah Huyler. Chloe and Hannah are twin sisters that are seniors at Lakeridge High School in Oregon. Both Hannah and Chloe are committed to run at D1 schools next year, with Hannah running at Vanderbilt and Chloe running at Notre Dame. Chloe recently won the NXR Northwest Girls Championship race and if I am getting the dates right, they will both be racing on December 7th, with Chloe racing at NXN and Hannah racing at Footlocker Nationals. What's crazy about their journeys is that Chloe and Hannah started doing cross country just last year and since then, they have become some of the top runners not only in Oregon, but also in the Pacific Northwest and only time will tell if they can stand on the podium at Nationals. Today, we talk all about their experiences at NXR and how Chloe made up a 10 second deficit in the final k from Sophia Rodriguez in order to take the win in the last 200. We also talk about their relationship in the sport of running and how much it has helped their journeys, why they chose Notre Dame and Vanderbilt, how they envision the future of their respective running careers, and much more. Dave and Alex welcome Jimmy Wischusen to the show and we talk about his running journey so far, handling expectations, adversity, injuries and pressure, plus, why he chose Virginia as the school he's running at next!
This week's episode of The Sunday Shakeout features an interview with Notre Dame commit and runner at Seattle Prep, Jack Henzke. Jack is an extremely talented runner, having placed 3rd at NXR with an impressive time of 15:08. He also ran at NXN, despite the treacherous conditions. It was an absolute honor to have him on the podcast. In this podcast episode, Jack discusses his recent training progress and mentions a minor issue with his right knee that he addressed with physical therapy. Despite the concern, his knee is improving, and he's excited about continuing his training. He shares insights into his training routine, including recent mile pace workouts and plans to increase his weekly mileage to around 55, focusing on longer distance days and Peloton doubles. Jack reflects on his recent race at the Dempsey 3K, where he competed against some of the biggest names in the sport. While the race didn't go as well as he hoped, he emphasizes the early stage of the season and the importance of peaking at the right time. The conversation shifts to Jack's running journey, starting in second grade with a cross-country race. He highlights early successes, winning CYO cross country in fifth grade, and trying various sports throughout his childhood, with running not initially being his main focus. Jack shares his journey through middle school, where he momentarily lost interest in cross country but regained focus in eighth grade. Despite playing multiple sports, running took center stage in high school, particularly during his freshman year. Jack then reflects on his cross country season, highlighting both the highs and lows. He discusses specific races, such as a disappointing performance at a meet where he had expected better results, and the challenges faced at Hole in the Wall. Jack also describes the team's wake-up call when facing tough competition, leading to a shift in mindset. The conversation delves into Jack's journey leading up to the NXR (Nike Cross Regionals) race, where he eventually finishes third individually. Despite the team missing out on qualification, they celebrate their achievements, earning a fifth-place finish at NXR. The discussion touches on the bittersweet feelings of individual success amidst team challenges. We explore the preparation period between NXR and NXN, detailing the training process and adjustments made for the national championship race. They discuss the muddy and challenging conditions at NXN, where Jack didn't perform as well as he had hoped. The podcast concludes with a look into Jack's recruitment process for college, specifically Notre Dame. Jack shares his experiences visiting different universities and explains why he ultimately chose Notre Dame. The conversation closes with excitement for Jack's future collegiate career and prospects for the Notre Dame cross country program. Thank you so much to all of my listeners for the support! The Just Athletics podcast is like "Curb Your Enthusiasm", we go on long hiatuses, but then come back with bangers. Kicking off 2024 we have an incredible guest in Sean Brosnan. Chris, Dave, and Travis banter a little to start the show, so if you just want to listen to Sean, skip to the 17:15 mark in the show. Sean Brosnan has established himself as one of the best coaches in sport. He made his mark at Newberry Park High School, coaching arguably the greatest high school cross country team ever. His teams at Newberry Park quickly elevated after his arrival in 2016 and won four California State Cross Country titles (three for the boys and one for the girls). The boys team won NXN in 2019 and in 2022 (after he had moved to UCLA but his influence was still felt and Aaron Sahlman won the individual title) and the Running Lane Championship in 2021. The boys team was 6th at NXN in 2018. His athletes ran ridiculously fast times on the track during his stint at NP, such as the Sahlman brothers running 1:48, with Colin also running 3:56 in the mile, Nico Young 8:40 in the 3200m, Leo Young 3:39 in the 1500m, Lex Young 13:43 in the 5000m, three school records for Samantha McDonnell in the 800, 1600, and 3200, and the lists go on and on. Sean spent one year at UCLA and quickly had the distance group performing at a very high level. He coached eight All-Americans in the distance events in that one year, highlighted with the women's DMR team placing fourth at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Sean is now a free agent and announces some big plans for his talents in 2024 on this episode. Thanks so much to Sean for jumping on to do the show on such short notice. We hope you all enjoy this time with a phenomenal coach. Today's episode is one of the most touching stories we've ever told on the podcast. Today, I have the extreme privilege of sharing the full story of Easton Allred. If you're not familiar with Easton, he was one of the best high school runners of his era. He ran PRs of 4:05.67 (Mile) and 8:58 (2-Mile at altitude). As a sophomore in high school, he placed 22nd at NXN and returned his junior year to place fifth behind legends like Nico Young and Cole Hocker. He won back-to-back team UHSAA 6A Cross Country State Championships (2018-19). Easton then went on to compete for BYU while he battled his health struggles. He ran 13:45 in the 5k and 4:04 in the Mile during his short time competing there. As his running career progressed, Easton started to experience severe health issues such as extreme nausea, anxiety, and more. After seeing dozens of doctors, he was found to have an anatomical disorder known as MALS. The syndrome involves compression of vital arteries branching from the aorta. This compression damages the nerves, causing them to send scrambled signals to the brain, which are interpreted as intense nausea and anxiety. Today's episode was moving beyond words, and I get emotional just thinking about all that Easton has gone through and overcome. In this episode, Easton goes through his full story and all that he has gone through and overcome. He walks me through all the ups and downs of his life, and the meaning behind it all. I can't stress this enough: take the time to listen to today's conversation. It will move you. Lastly, please share this episode with a friend who you think will benefit from hearing Easton's story. Doug's teams have finished on the NXN podium 7 times and in 2015 his boys team won it all. He built Great Oak High School into a national powerhouse. Then he took over a new program in 2022 (Herriman) and in his first year there they finished 3rd at NXN. Although there are advantages to coaching in that area of the country, Doug shares principles that can be applied anywhere even if you are not a high school coach. Qualities of a good leader. Getting people to buy-in to your system. Working hard and making sacrifices but also coaching the whole person. And a good chunk of training talk at the end including Doug's thoughts on mileage, developing athletes (not just runners), and staying healthy. ———————————— Apple:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/... Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Two Percolation Puzzles, published by Adam Scherlis on July 4, 2023 on LessWrong. Take a very large chessboard (NxN, where N is huge). Remove some fraction 1-p of the squares at random, leaving a fraction p of them. Can you place a queen on the first row and then, via some sequence of legal moves, get it to the last row? This is probabilistic, of course, but it turns out the probability of success undergoes a sharp phase transition -- near-zero for small values of p, then suddenly rising almost to one in the vicinity of a critical value p_queen. For different pieces, the critical value is different, e.g. p_rook for a rook. (Note that p_queen

Today on the podcast series "The Road To Hayward" is Irene Riggs and Sophia Kennedy, friends and future teammates at Stanford University this fall! Irene Riggs and the word "history" belong in the same sentence. Over the past year, Irene has made history in her home state of West Virginia and on the National Stage. Irene became the first athlete from West Virginia ever to win a national cross country title, and she did so in remarkable fashion, overcoming cold, windy conditions at NXN to produce the No. 2 all-time mark of 16:40.9 at Glendoveer Golf Course in Oregon. She also ran the second-fastest high school girls' 5K cross country race in history with her 16:02.1 effort at the Nike Southeast Regional. Irene also made her first U.S. National Team by winning the 2023 USATF U20 XC title. This track season, Irene ran 9:45.97 in the 3200m at the Spire Scholastic Showcase Meet, became the Nike Indoor National Champion in the Mile, winning in 4:38.23, and won the Arcadia Invitational 3200m in a meet record time of 9:52.66. Irene is also a fantastic selfless individual off the grass and track. She is the Vice President of the student body at her school, a student council representative at Morgantown, and has spent hours doing community service. Through these accomplishments, Irene became the 2022-2023 Gatordate National Girls Cross-Country Player of The Year. Sophia Kennedy has slowly cemented herself as one of the greatest runners in Indiana state history. Last fall, Sophia placed seventh at the Nike Cross Nationals, a week after taking second at the Champs Sports Midwest Region Championships. Sophia is a two-time qualifier for the Eastbay National Cross Country Championships, placing seventh in 2021. Sophia, the daughter of U.S. distance great Bob Kennedy, was fifth in the two-mile at the 2021 Brooks PR Invitational and eighth in 2022. Running for Park Tudor School in Indianapolis, Sophia was second in the 3,200 at the 2022 Indiana state track finals and third in the state in cross country this fall. This indoor season, Sophia placed fourth in the Mile at Nike Indoor Nationals, running 4:45.60. She also ran an outdoor mile in 4:49 and a 3200 in 10:07, where she split 5:08 and 4:59. Others may know Sophia's dad, Bob Kennedy, a two-time Olympian who set American Records and won four NCAA titles while at Indiana University. In today's episode, we go through how they met each other, the decision to go to Stanford, exclusive insights and stories from NXN and NIN, how their outdoor season is going, how they're preparing for Nike Outdoor Nationals, and top things off with some listener questions! On the grass, she placed 4th at NXN, and on the track, she placed 2nd at New Balance Outdoor Nationals. In this conversation, Emily takes us through her journey in the sport, from state titles in high school to ambitions of winning an NCAA title in college. She takes us through her setbacks, including dealing with stress fractures, mono, and more. I loved hearing Emily's thoughts on setbacks and how she gets through them. Emily also talks about leadership, community, playing the long game, the importance of her faith, and much more! I loved this conversation with Emily. Emily is an incredibly joyful spirit and a wise demeanor that made this conversation extra insightfuk. I'm confident you'll walk away from this conversation a little more inspired to go after whatever you're striving for in life. Jackson Heidesch is a kid on fire. This past indoor season, he won the Hoka Misfit 2-mile in a historic time of 8:42.6. He then went on to place second at NBNI in the 2-mile and two days later won the mile in stunning fashion diving for the win and a 4:02.25. This past fall on the grass, Jackson won NXR Northeast and placed 5th at NXN. He has also won back-to-back individual and team state titles. Jackson has etched his name into the Iowa high school history books through these historic performances. In this conversation, Jackson takes us through his history in the sport, from a freshman who was just starting to gain interest in the sport to a 4:02 miler with plans of breaking the four-minute-mile barrier. We also discuss what made Duke stand out from other schools, winning his first national meet in dramatic fashion (reference image), his goals for this upcoming year, how he wants to be remembered in Iowa history, how he's handling March Madness Ls, the power of training through Iowa winters, and much more! Jackson is an extremely eloquent speaker who was delightful to have a conversation with! His stories and experiences in the sport were both fun and inspiring to listen to. You asked, and we delivered. Aaron Sahlman comes on the podcast today. Aaron is fresh off of a remarkable season where he won his first-ever cross-country race... the only catch is that that race was the national championship. Not only did he win in stunning fashion, but also broke his former teammate Nico Young's course record. Aaron also helped his team Newbury Park win their second-ever national team championship. On the track, Aaron is a 4xmile (HS) national record holder and holds PRs of 1:48.91 (800m), 4:01.34 (mile), and 8:48.28 (3200m). Aaron has made it known that he will be going after Michael Granville's long-standing 800m high school national record this upcoming season. In this episode, Aaron documents his start in the sport, growing up with Colin Sahlman as a brother, Newbury Park, winning NXN, future goals, and aspirations, and much more! This episode was very insightful and a ton of fun. I'm confident that you'll walk away from this conversation all the more motivated to chase after your goals.
